some newsies film & broadway musical theories that i've read (disclaimer, these are not my original theories):
jack's biological dad can be linked to alfred borden's character in "the prestige." this connection is evident in their physical resemblance & shared predisposition for legal troubles. borden's history includes visits to new york & numerous romantic liaisons.
jack's evolution into a vigilante reminiscent of the iconic batman takes shape in a unique narrative. his backstory is shrouded in tragedy, with the absence of his parents casting a long shadow over his life. perhaps their untimely demise occurred in a dark alley, thrusting jack into a life of orphanhood. alternatively, his journey might follow a path where he embarks on a quest to acquire the skills necessary for combating crime in the gritty underworld of 1920s gotham (which is also an old nickname for new york city). these acquired abilities encompass the realms of stealth, martial arts, & even the art of synchronized dance—a mysterious & unconventional arsenal he aims to employ in his quest for justice.
the outcome of "independence day" can be likened to a whimsical twist of fate. in a humorous interpretation, it could be suggested that an extraterrestrial species watched "newsies" & concluded that the incumbent president would respond to their threat with dance, anticipating an easy conquest. however, their expectations were wildly off the mark. instead of encountering a docile figure, they were met with a resolute leader in bill pullman. this unforeseen turn of events resulted in a level of resistance far beyond what the alien race had anticipated.
the delancey brothers' backstory indicates a history of childhood abuse & neglect. oscar's disclosure in the musical reveals that their father failed to provide proper care for them. additionally, their living arrangement with wiesel, who is referred to as their uncle in the film, adds a layer of complexity to their upbringing. oscar & morris exhibit signs of excessive aggression & violence, extending beyond the demands of their occupation. morris, in particular, displays a proclivity for resorting to intimidation whenever possible. these behaviors are often characteristic of individuals who have survived childhood abuse without addressing the underlying trauma. these experiences may also elucidate the pervasive anger exhibited by these characters, despite their youthful age, as violence can frequently be a learned response in such cases.
david & les have not been explicitly identified as jewish in the final version of the movie or the musical. however, an original script for the film suggests this aspect of their background. there are subtle clues in the narrative that allude to their potential jewish heritage. for instance, the name david jacobs implies a connection to jewish culture, & david's articulate & scholarly manner of speaking aligns with the jewish tradition's emphasis on education. the reason david & les do not openly discuss their heritage in the story could be attributed to various factors. one possibility is that their parents have a long history in america, spanning several decades or more. alternatively, they may be recent immigrants who have faced significant discrimination, prompting them to encourage their sons to assimilate fully into american society.
crutchy's previous stay at the refuge is a matter of record. he confided in jack that if anyone suspected he couldn't fend for himself, he'd be detained there indefinitely. it's possible that crutchy had a prior stint at the refuge, & if that were the case, jack might have played a role in securing his release. despite crutchy not fitting the typical profile of a criminal, his disability might have driven him to resort to theft as a means of survival. in the year 1899, opportunities for individuals with disabilities to secure employment were scarce or virtually non-existent. moreover, it's plausible that crutchy ended up at the refuge simply because of his disability, as the prevailing belief may have been that he had limited prospects for adoption, academic success, or societal contribution according to the standards set by able-bodied individuals.
jack's father shared tales of santa fe with him. mr. kelly (sullivan) harbored aspirations of relocating his family to that enchanting place, where they could pursue a ranching life, well before the bustling streets of new york had worn him down. jack became captivated by this vision, & he might have even harbored intentions of upholding his father's dream as the head of the household, had the family endured.

How Michael Met Neil
original direct link [MP3]
(Neil, if you see this, please feel free to grab the transcript and store on your site; I had no easy way of contacting you.)
DAVID TENNANT: Tell me about @neil-gaiman then, because he's in that category [previously: “such a profound effect on my life”] as well.
MICHAEL SHEEN: So this is what has brought us together.
DAVID: Yes.
MICHAEL: To the new love story for the 21st century.
DAVID: Exactly.
MICHAEL: So when I went to drama school, there was a guy called Gary Turner in my year. And within the first few weeks, we were doing something, having a drink or whatever. And he said to me, “Do you read comic books?”
And I said, “No.” I mean, this is … what … '88? '88, '89. So it was … now I know that it was a period of time that was a big change, transformation going through comic books. Rather than it being thought of as just superheroes and Batman and Superman, there was this whole new era of a generation of writers like Grant Morrison.
DAVID: The kids who'd grown up reading comic books were now making comic books
MICHAEL: Yeah, yeah, and starting to address different kinds of subjects through the comic book medium. So it wasn't about just superheroes, it was all kinds of stuff going on – really fascinating stuff. And I was totally unaware of this.
And so this guy Gary said to me, "Do you read them?" And I said, "No." And he went, "Right, okay, here's The Watchman [sic] by Alan Moore. Here's Swamp Thing. Here's Hellblazer. And here's Sandman.”
And Sandman was Neil Gaiman's big series that put his name on the map. And I read all those, and, just – I was blown away by all of them, but particularly the Sandman stories, because he was drawing on mythology, which was something I was really interested in, and fairy tales, folklore, and philosophy, and Shakespeare, and all kinds of stuff were being mixed up in this story. And I absolutely loved it.
So I became a big fan of Neil's, and started reading everything by him. And then fairly shortly after that, within six months to a year, Good Omens the book came out, which Neil wrote with Terry Pratchett. And so I got the book – because I was obviously a big fan of Neil's by this point – read it, loved it, then started reading Terry Pratchett’s stuff as well, because I didn't know his stuff before then – and then spent years and years and years just being a huge fan of both of them.
And then eventually when – I'd done films like the Underworld films and doing Twilight films. And I think it was one of the Twilight films, there was a lot of very snooty interviews that happened where people who considered themselves well above talking about things like Twilight were having to interview me … and, weirdly, coming at it from the attitude of 'clearly this is below you as well' … weirdly thinking I'm gonna go, 'Yeah, fucking Twilight.”
And I just used to go, "You know what? Some of the greatest writing of the last 50-100 years has happened in science fiction or fantasy." Philip K Dick is one of my favorite writers of all time. In fact, the production of Hamlet I did was mainly influenced by Philip K Dick. Ursula K. Le Guin and Asimov, and all these amazing people. And I talked about Neil as well. And so I went off on a bit of a rant in this interview.
Anyway, the interview came out about six months later, maybe. Knock on the door, open the door, delivery of a big box. That’s interesting. Open the box, there's a card at the top of the box. I open the card.
It says, From one fan to another, Neil Gaiman. And inside the box are first editions of Neil's stuff, and all kinds of interesting things by Neil. And he just sent this stuff.
DAVID: You'd never met him?
MICHAEL: Never met him. He'd read the interview, or someone had let him know about this interview where I'd sung his praises and stood up for him and the people who work within that sort of genre as being like …
And he just got in touch. We met up for the first time when he came to – I was in Los Angeles at the time, and he came to LA. And he said, "I'll take you for a meal."
I said, “All right.”
He said, "Do you want to go somewhere posh, or somewhere interesting?”
I said, "Let's go somewhere interesting."
He said, "Right, I'm going to take you to this restaurant called The Hump." And it's at Santa Monica Airport. And it's a sushi restaurant.
I was like, “Right, okay.” So I had a Mini at the time. And we get in my Mini and we drive off to Santa Monica Airport. And this restaurant was right on the tarmac, like, you could sit in the restaurant (there's nobody else there when we got there, we got there quite early) and you're watching the planes landing on Santa Monica Airport. It's extraordinary.
And the chef comes out and Neil says, "Just bring us whatever you want. Chef's choice."
So, I'd never really eaten sushi before. So we sit there; we had this incredible meal where they keep bringing these dishes out and they say, “This is [blah, blah, blah]. Just use a little bit of soy sauce or whatever.” You know, “This is eel. This is [blah].”
And then there was this one dish where they brought out and they didn't say what it was. It was like “mystery dish”, we had it ... delicious. Anyway, a few more people started coming into the restaurant as time went on.
And we're sort of getting near the end, and I said, "Neil, I can't eat anymore. I'm gonna have to stop now. This is great, but I can't eat–"
"Right, okay. We'll ask for the bill in a minute."
And then the door opens and some very official people come in. And it was the Feds. And the Feds came in, and we knew they were because they had jackets on that said they were part of the Federal Bureau of Whatever. And about six of them come in. Two of them go … one goes behind the counter, two go into the kitchen, one goes to the back. They've all got like guns on and stuff.
And me and Neil are like, "What on Earth is going on?"
And then eventually one guy goes, "Ladies and gentlemen, if you haven't ordered already, please leave. If you're still eating your meal, please finish up, pay your bill, leave."*
[* - delivered in a perfect American ‘serious law agent’ accent/impression]
And we were like, "Oh my God, are we poisoned? Is there some terrible thing that's happened?"
We'd finished, so we pay our bill. And then all the kitchen staff are brought out. And the head chef is there. The guy who's been bringing us this food. And he's in tears. And he says to Neil, "I'm so sorry." He apologizes to Neil. And we leave. We have no idea what happened.
DAVID: But you're assuming it's the mystery dish.
MICHAEL: Well, we're assuming that we can't be going to – we can't be – it can't be poisonous. You know what I mean? It can't be that there's terrible, terrible things.
So the next day was the Oscars, which is why Neil was in town. Because Coraline had been nominated for an Oscar. Best documentary that year was won by The Cove, which was by a team of people who had come across dolphins being killed, I think.
Turns out, what was happening at this restaurant was that they were having illegal endangered species flown in to the airport, and then being brought around the back of the restaurant into the kitchen.
We had eaten whale – endangered species whale. That was the mystery dish that they didn't say what it was.
And the team behind The Cove were behind this sting, and they took them down that night whilst we were there.
DAVID: That’s extraordinary.
MICHAEL: And we didn't find this out for months. So for months, me and Neil were like, "Have you worked anything out yet? Have you heard anything?"
"No, I haven't heard anything."
And then we heard that it was something to do with The Cove, and then we eventually found out that that restaurant, they were all arrested. The restaurant was shut down. And it was because of that. And we'd eaten whale that night.
DAVID: And that was your first meeting with Neil Gaiman.
MICHAEL: That was my first meeting. And also in the drive home that night from that restaurant, he said, and we were in my Mini, he said, "Have you found the secret compartment?"
I said, "What are you talking about?" It's such a Neil Gaiman thing to say.
DAVID: Isn't it?
MICHAEL: The secret compartment? Yeah. Each Mini has got a secret compartment. I said, "I had no idea." It's secret. And he pressed a little button and a thing opened up. And it was a secret compartment in my own car that Neil Gaiman showed me.
DAVID: Was there anything inside it?
MICHAEL: Yeah, there was a little man. And he jumped out and went, "Hello!" No, there was nothing in there. There was afterwards because I started putting...
DAVID: Sure. That's a very Neil Gaiman story. All of that is such a Neil Gaiman story.
MICHAEL: That's how it began. Yeah.
DAVID: And then he came to offer you the part in Good Omens.
MICHAEL: Yeah. Well, we became friends and we would whenever he was in town, we would meet up and yeah, and then eventually he started, he said, "You know, I'm working on an adaptation of Good Omens." And I can remember at one point Terry Gilliam was going to maybe make a film of it. And I remember being there with Neil and Terry when they were talking about it. And...
DAVID: Were you involved at that point?
MICHAEL: No, no, I wasn't involved. I just happened to have met up with Neil that day.
DAVID: Right.
MICHAEL: And then Terry Gilliam came along and they were chatting, that was the day they were talking about that or whatever.
And then eventually he sent me one of the scripts for an early draft of like the first episode of Good Omens. And he said – and we started talking about me being involved in it, doing it – he said, “Would you be interested?” I was like, "Yeah, of course." I went, "Oh my God." And he said, "Well, I'll send you the scripts when they come," and I would read them, and we'd talk about them a little bit. And so I was involved.
But it was always at that point with the idea, because he'd always said about playing Crowley in it. And so, as time went on, as I was reading the scripts, I was thinking, "I don't think I can play Crowley. I don't think I'm going to be able to do it." And I started to get a bit nervous because I thought, “I don't want to tell Neil that I don't think I can do this.” But I just felt like I don't think I can play Crowley.
DAVID: Of course you can [play Crowley?].
MICHAEL: Well, I just on a sort of, on a gut level, sometimes you have it on a gut level.
DAVID: Sure, sure.
MICHAEL: I can do this.
DAVID: Yeah.
MICHAEL: Or I can't do this. And I just thought, “You know what, this is not the part for me. The other part is better for me, I think. I think I can do that, I don't think I could do that.”
But I was scared to tell Neil because I thought, "Well, he wants me to play Crowley" – and then it turned out he had been feeling the same way as well. And he hadn't wanted to mention it to me, but he was like, "I think Michael should really play Aziraphale."
And neither of us would bring it up. And then eventually we did. And it was one of those things where you go, "Oh, thank God you said that. I feel exactly the same way." And then I think within a fairly short space of time, he said, “I think we've got … David Tennant … for Crowley.” And we both got very excited about that.
And then all these extraordinary people started to join in. And then, and then off we went.
DAVID: That's the other thing about Neil, he collects people, doesn't he? So he'll just go, “Oh, yeah, I've phoned up Frances McDormand, she's up for it.” Yeah. You're, what?
MICHAEL: “I emailed Jon Hamm.”
DAVID: Yeah.
MICHAEL: And yeah, and you realize how beloved he is and how beloved his work is. And I think we would both recognise that Good Omens is one of the most beloved of all of Neil's stuff.
DAVID: Yes.
MICHAEL: And had never been turned into anything.
DAVID: Yeah.
MICHAEL: And so the kind of responsibility of that, I mean, for me, for someone who has been a fan of him and a fan of the book for so long, I can empathize with all the fans out there who are like, “Oh, they better not fuck this up.”
DAVID: Yes.
MICHAEL: “And this had better be good.” And I have that part of me. But then, of course, the other part of me is like, “But I'm the one who might be fucking it up.”
DAVID: Yeah.
MICHAEL: So I feel that responsibility as well.
DAVID: But we have Neil on site.
MICHAEL: Yes. Well, Neil being the showrunner …
DAVID: Yeah. I think it takes the curse off.
MICHAEL: … I think it made a massive difference, didn't it? Yeah. You feel like you're in safe hands.
DAVID: Well, we think. Not that the world has seen it yet.
MICHAEL (grimly): No, I know.
DAVID: But it was a -- it's been a -- it's been a joy to work with you on it. I can't wait for the world to see it.
MICHAEL: Oh my God. Oh, well, I mean, it's the only, I've done a few things where there are two people, it's a bit of a double act, like Frost-Nixon and The Queen, I suppose, in some ways. But, and I've done it, Amadeus or whatever.
This is the only thing I've done where I really don't think of it as “my character” or “my performance as that character”. I think of it totally as us.
DAVID: Yeah.
MICHAEL: The two of us.
DAVID: Yes.
MICHAEL: Like they, what I do is defined by what you do.
DAVID: Yeah.
MICHAEL: And that was such a joy to have that experience. And it made it so much easier in a way as well, I found, because you don't feel like you're on your own in it. Like it's totally us together doing this and the two characters totally complement each other. And the experience of doing it was just a real joy.
DAVID: Yeah. Well, I hope the world is as excited to see it as we are to talk about it, frankly.
MICHAEL: You know, there's, having talked about T.S. Eliot earlier, there's another bit from The Wasteland where there's a line which goes, These fragments I have shored against my ruin.
And this is how I think about life now. There is so much in life, no matter what your circumstances, no matter what, where you've got, what you've done, how much money you got, all that. Life's hard. I mean, you can, it can take you down at any point.
You have to find this stuff. You have to like find things that will, these fragments that you hold to yourself, they become like a liferaft, and especially as time goes on, I think, as I've got older, I've realized it is a thin line between surviving this life and going under.
And the things that keep you afloat are these fragments, these things that are meaningful to you and what's meaningful to you will be not-meaningful to someone else, you know. But whatever it is that matters to you, it doesn't matter what it was you were into when you were a teenager, a kid, it doesn't matter what it is. Go and find them, and find some way to hold them close to you.
Make it, go and get it. Because those are the things that keep you afloat. They really are. Like doing that with him or whatever it is, these are the fragments that have shored against my ruin. Absolutely.
DAVID: That's lovely. Michael, thank you so much.
MICHAEL: Thank you.
DAVID: For talking today and for being here.
MICHAEL: Oh, it's a pleasure. Thank you.

ABOUT ME
Hi! Call me Kazz.
Cis. Het. She/her. Mid 30's.
I am a dual Canadian/Australian citizen currently living in South Australia. I grew up in the 90’s, so 90’s nostalgia is my jam. My husband and I have been together since 2011. He is in most of my same RP games. I work retail in a grocery store and have a (useless) bachelor of arts in English and History, a Graduate Diploma in Education and a degree in Library Studies. Orcas are my favourite animal, although I’m also partial to cats, dogs, red-tailed hawks, Australian magpies and guinea pigs.
I’m currently the owner of three guinea pigs named Sable, Neil and Buzz. Check out their side blog HERE.
My hobbies are writing fanfic, playing RPGs, video games and cross stitching.
Link to my Fanfic on Ao3
Link to fuckyeahlabynight Tumblr's largest collection of everything to do with LA by Night and NY by Night.
Link to my Cross Stitching Side Blog
My CURRENT Fandoms include (but are not limited to):
Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss
LA By Night, NY by Night and Vampire the Masquerade in general
Critical Role
Dropout.tv
Doctor Who
Good Omens
I also love SMOSH, Dropout.tv, Last Podcast on the Left (and other true crime/spooky/disaster podcasts,) Disney, Shakespeare, Norse, Greek and Egyptian mythology, most films, musicals and theatre in general. My favourite musicals include Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Little Shop of Horrors, Six, Beetlejuice, Hadestown, and Les Misérables. I also love the Starkid musicals.
Past fandoms include Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dresden Files, Star Wars, the X-Men, Spider-Man, Marvel and the MCU, Batman and the DCU, Hellsing, Hannibal, Dracula Daily, Animorphs, Discworld, Game of Thrones, Supernatural, Smallville, Harry Potter, Team Four Star, Achievement Hunter, Death Note, Wolf’s Rain, True Blood, How to Train Your Dragon, Steam Powered Giraffe, Lord of the Rings, Rifftrax, The Sandman, American Gods, and Transformers.
My favourite video games include Dead by Daylight, The Sims 4, Wingspan, Power Wash Simulator, Hunter: Call of the Wild, Stardew Valley, Jackbox Games, Unpacking, House Flipper and Steamworld Heist.
I prefer watching streamers play horror games rather than playing them myself. (I make an exception for DbD, as I’ve become a killer main and that’s a lot less scary than playing survivor.)
I’m also into reading runes/tarot cards and doing some magicy stuff from time to time.
Current RPG games I’m Gming or are playing in:
Vampire the Masquerade 5th edition
Scion
A homebrew game called "Becalmed" using the nWoD system.
RPG Systems I have played in the past include:
Most New World of Darkness systems. (“Vanilla” WoD, Vampire: the Requiem, Werewolf: the Forsaken, Changeling: the Lost, Hunter: the Vigil and Mage: the Awakening, while also running games with Geists and Prometheans.)
Call of Cthulhu
Dread
Exalted (2nd and 3rd ed.)
Dungeons and Dragons (3.5 and 5th edition)
Spirit of the Centaury
Pathfinder
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Monster of the Week
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG
Apoc World
Shadowrun
Only War
Star Wars: Edge of the Empire
Marvel Multiverse RPG
Please note that though I used to love a lot of things that have *problematic* creators, that does NOT mean I support or condone the actions of those creators. I may still reblog things from those fandoms from time to time.

Another High School Les Mis
Live reaction:
This seems pretty well filmed
Holy soprano, Batman! That was one hell of a prisoner solo
This Valjean is already doing the most. I have a good feeling about this guy. For some reason, he’s allowed to wander all over the stage during this scene and he’s very confrontational with Javert. These two things together kinda diminish the oppressive vibe the scene usually has.
I drink from the orchestra pit. How clean the taste.
The lighting design is fun so far
This Valjean is phenomenal. He hasn’t even done a big solo number yet. It’s just his acting that’s so amazing to me.
OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD THIS GUYYYYYY!!! He just knows exactly when to turn up the intensity and when to be more subtle. Get this kid a Tony NOW!
There seems to be an audio issue for a minute there
It seems like some ensemble members have mics and some don’t. Pretty standard for school productions.
This staging is very weird. Aside from the audio troubles, I can’t find Fantine. I can’t tell who’s singing because of how evenly distributed the crowd onstage is. She needs to stands apart (ideally downstage)
I love how kids who play the foreman often like to sound all gravely. It doesn’t actually make them sound more tough, but it’s a nice touch and I like it.
Oh this is a no swearing version. “I might have known the witch could bite.” Okay.
This Fantine is really good so far. I feel kinda bad for the actress because the track for her song is going weirdly fast. Give my girl some time!
This production would definitely be better if they made whoever was singing actually noticeable to the audience. I don’t know who I’m meant to look at in these ensemble scenes.
This Fantine seems to be struggling with her high notes. No judgment though. It’s a difficult singing role. I also like this girl’s acting, so I wanna be nice :)
Her short hair doesn’t look terrible. Nice.
The man who recruits Fantine is a woman in this production. Not sure if this was a choice or if they were running low on male actors.
Some little kid in the audience just went “yay!”
This Bamatabois is looking a little plain. I’d appreciate some pizzazz that marks him as bourgeois.
I’ve seen some awkward staging of the scratch bit. This wasn’t too bad.
Javert in red? Slay I guess.
He’s a little monotone. Let’s hope he gets more energy later.
This Valjean is really willing to get right up in Javert’s face. Don’t mess with Monsieur le Maire.
Poor Fauchelevent is so distraught. Save him!
The lighting needs to chill out a little you can barely see that he lifted the cart. It’s just a bit too dark.
This track is too fast! Javert just had to combine a ton of lines and barely got any of the tone through. I missed “forgive me sir I would not dare.”
This Javert is kinda funny. He keeps looking at the ground instead of at Valjean. Are you shy, dude?
I wish the lighting was better at the end of Who Am I. Another stellar performance from Valjean.
Fantine’s death was a little bit awkward. Both actors did a very good job, but the staging was weird.
Who let this Javert actor pronounce the n in Monsieur? Who let that happen?
LOW NOTE TIME
CONFRONTATION SWORD FIGHT????? I have no clue who would come up with that, but I suppose I’m entertained.
WHAT HAPPENED? WHAT WAS THAT? Javert down! I have no clue what just happened. It was too dark to see.
And then no final fight? Nothing? You can’t even see Javert for the last bit. He’s just some voice in the shadows.
So far, this is a good Madame T
That was… an interesting line change in Master of the House. Are they not allowed to say Jesus or something?
Nevermind. He just said Jesus. Why change the other lines then?
Not the shushing instead of swearing. This is just funny.
Well, they let her say bastard.
This Thenardier couple is pretty funny
This Gavroche could use some energy. Come on kid! Long live us!
I’ve got a good feeling about this Eponine
COSETTE
Toy soldier Javert seems to have grown a spine. Goddamn.
I repeat. GODDAMN.
Go toy soldier go!
Oops line mixup. But he recovered!
This Eponine is such a good singer. I’m in love with her voice.
Short king Grantaire
Do You Hear the People Sing was so fun
COSETTE
Weird staging thing. Valjean’s verse of In My Life gets messed with because Cosette has to climb down from this little balcony to talk to him
Wow you can see how he’s trying to let her down gently, but it’s clear that he just does not want to talk about this. Truly getting that sad old man vibe.
This Marius and Cosette actually have good chemistry. They’re really selling this.
HARMONIES
This Valjean can literally just walk onstage and I start crying. Oh my gooooood
Why did the lights get turned off on them?
ONE DAY MORE
Toy soldier does not know his lines very well…
Act 1 ends and I am Screaming! I love this so much!
Toy soldier hitting those high notes. Also, his barricade disguise makes him look like a beatnik.
Eponine in the audience is quite a choice. I think I like it.
I’m just noticing the tape markers on the ground. They’re glow in the dark. Like little stars on the floor. I’m getting too sentimental about this production.
EPONIIIIIINE!!!! Maybe Marius doesn’t love you, but I do! I love you!
Not having the “shoot me now or shoot me later” verse is so funny. Toy soldier is just sitting there.
They are really trying their best to fake this battle scene.
Where is he? The sound quality just got weird. Did they turn his mic off? Toy soldier, did they put you in a closet or something?
Where are both of them? What’s happening?
Guys are you in the back rooms? What is this location?
TOY SOLDIER! This is brilliant. Thank god he actually turned up the intensity here.
Marius singing about Cosette but like. Her dad is right next to you dude. Awkward.
This fucking high schooler singing “but I am old and will be gone” and I believe him!
Gavroche’s death is staged kinda strangely. Like I see the vision but I don’t know if it worked.
They seem to have combined some scenes after the final battle. This is weird but I wanna see where they take it.
Can’t really see much of Valjean carrying Marius around. They turned the lights off for a set change I think.
Goodbye, toy soldier.
I don’t think I’ve mentioned yet how good this Marius is. Great voice.
Did I not notice the old age makeup on Valjean before or is that new?
DONT YOU PUSH COSETTE
I have no more thoughts. Just sad.
FINALE YESSSSSSS
Final impressions:
AAAAA THIS WAS SO AMAZING
This high school drama club should know that I am now their #1 fan
Valjean was definitely my favorite. That was a phenomenal performance that I honestly prefer to some more professional actors I’ve seen.
Javert took a bit to get good, but by the end, he had really grown on me. I have no idea when I started calling him toy soldier, but it’s a fun nickname so whatever.
Some other standout performances were Eponine and Cosette. What amazing voices those girls have. They really made their characters come alive.
There was the problem of the lighting being too dim. I wished I could see more of what was happening, but it was in shadow.
I got so attached to this cast and this production. If people are interested, I might post the link to it because these kids did a fantastic job.

[ENG] Luca Marinelli: "I'm a candidate for the David, I love uncomfortable challenges. And in Spoleto I will make my debut as a director, in theater"
Shy, solitary and light-hearted, the Roman actor has become one of the reference points of auteur cinema: "There are also Ficarra and Picone in the running for the most important prize in cinema. Those who raise fences against comedians have understood nothing".
With his big rapacious eagle nose rising above an astonished and emaciated expression, Luca Marinelli loves characters to climb, all energy and restlessness, as happens in Le Otto Montagne, a journey towards the absolute. It's the film for which he's nominated for the David di Donatello (with the other protagonist, Alessandro Borghi). Shortly afterwards, on July 8th at the Spoleto Film Festival, the 38-year-old Roman actor, who has become a point of reference for the auteur cinema, will make his debut as a director, in theater, with "A Report to an Academy", based on Kafka's story.
Marinelli is an atypical Roman who moved years ago to Berlin for love, a city that "stimulates the creative dimension". Shy, reluctant to talk about himself, cautious and ironic, solitary and light-hearted, he calibrates his words with the rhythm of a fifteenth-century monk amanuensis. He was not admitted to the Experimental Center of cinematography where he told the commission that the film of his life is Batman. He took his revenge in the field in projects that few believed in, in the part of the criminal in Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot and the junkie in Non essere cattivo. In Venice he won the Coppa Volpi for Martin Eden. He would love to talk only about Kafka.
What strikes you about this text, which is almost an existential labyrinth?
"I saw it in Paris many years ago and I was struck by it. I think of the truth, despair and lucidity in speaking metaphorically about the condition of existence in society. The monkey was taken from its context and forcibly taken elsewhere and from this "new life" it speaks to us. In the text, the monkey is a narrator who speaks of a way out at a scientific conference, of the need to find a solution to the problem of imprisonment but without getting lost behind the concept of freedom, too often used in an elusive way, creating many problems to human beings".
Kafka walks on the border between animality and humanity.
“He learns human behavior just to get out of the cage. It's a matter of survival, rather than freedom. I thought several times about acting it myself, but I saw Fabian Jung perform with his vibrant soul at his graduation essay at the Ernst Busch school and I asked him if I could be his director".
What will be seen on stage?
"A well-dressed being who tells the academic audience about his journey, from his previous life as a monkey to today, with his appearance and his behavior quite human, such as to be able to have some success".
A metaphor for the human condition?
"It's a metaphor for many things, including existence, how we behave, what we believe in. And much more. If the monkey is Kafka, in feeling different that has accompanied him throughout his life? I don't allow myself to interpret it. I like his style and what he communicates, his gaze on society".
The protagonist in Spoleto is a German actor.
"Well, the aspect that I find interesting is that Fabian Jung recites in Italian not knowing a single word of our language. He studied this monologue from scratch. It's a similar situation to that of the monkey. The fact of approaching the text as a sound or a rhythm was fundamental. We did a rehearsal in Berlin for some friends and family."
After the theatrical direction will you make one at the cinema?
"In the meantime, let's see how this show will be received. I don't hide being very worried, but it's a feeling I like. Not being comfortable is a quality I appreciate. Directing a film would be another beautiful and uncomfortable experience".
Let's change subject. What does the David nomination represent?
"It will be a pure emotion, a beautiful evening full of colleagues I love and with whom I have shared a part of this job. Alessandro Borghi, for me, is a brother".
Does the presence of Ficarra and Picone mean that prejudices and fences are falling on comedians?
"Those who have prejudices and raise barriers against comedians have understood nothing of the art of acting".
Apart from Batman, another idol of yours was Indiana Jones.
"Because as a boy I wanted to be an archaeologist. Today my archetype is writers who want to enrich themselves by traveling. But I am in love with my job and I feel lucky to be able to live what I dreamed of as a student at the Academy. I see this work as a great opportunity for exchange between human beings".
You have already been to the Venice Film Festival five times: what would you change about festivals?
"I would remove the barriers to shake hands with the public."
