For the first time since starting to illustrate stuff for others and hoping to become more someday: I feel like I might actually be more than just an illustrator creating what others imagine or want.

I'm sharing the colored draft of a piece I am working on for just me. No one else, no commission, no book, no purpose other than to say something important to me in an artistic way.

I guess drawing all those story and video game characters as a young person paid off in some way. I want to change how the words/things are represented, but this was a start and I wanted to share now as I might not have the gumption later when I overthink it.

I'm curious what you guys think when you look at her.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — More than half a million people in Gaza — a quarter of the population — are starving, according to a report Thursday by the U.N. and other agencies that highlights the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s bombardment and siege on the territory in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. The extent of the population’s hunger eclipsed even the near-famines in Afghanistan and Yemen of recent years, according to figures in the report. The report warned that the risk of famine is “increasing each day,” blaming the hunger on insufficient aid entering Gaza. “It doesn’t get any worse,’’ said Arif Husain, chief economist for the U.N.’s World Food Program. “I have never seen something at the scale that is happening in Gaza. And at this speed.” ... At the start of the war, Israel stopped all deliveries of food, water, medicine and fuel into the territory. After U.S. pressure, it allowed a trickle of aid in through Egypt. 10 states had abortion rights on the ballot, and amendments passed in 7 of them; Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, and New York.

Amendments did not pass in Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota.

Missouri is a particularly notable win because of the state's near total abortion ban, one of the most restrictive in the country.

Stay vigilant. While Trump is popping off about Canada, Greenland, and Mexico, Republican Andy Biggs has introduced House Resolution 7.

This line, "Whereas health care for women should also address the needs of men, families, and communities as they relate to women’s health care," implies that men could potentially dictate women's healthcare; for example, a woman might not be able to use birth control without her husband's permission.

I know that a few states still require written spousal consent for sterilization, and I am concerned that this bill could introduce the same concept for smaller healthcare decisions.

The primary focus of healthcare should be the patient, not the people surrounding them.

(Note: See updated post) The new DRAFT U.N. Resolution, set to be voted on today, calls for:

• ... “urgent and extended humanitarian pauses” in the fighting throughout Gaza and the opening of corridors inside the enclave “for a sufficient number of days to enable full, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian access.” • U.N. Secretary General António Guterres to appoint a senior coordinator “with responsibility for facilitating, coordinating, monitoring, and verifying in Gaza, as appropriate, the humanitarian nature” of all assistance, and demands that “the parties to the conflict cooperate with the coordinator to fulfill their mandate without delay or obstruction.” • ... “immediate and unconditional” release of the hostages. Although the resolution's language was toned down, this is a sign of progress. While such measures are long overdue and should have been honored from the start, we must do everything possible to meet the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza and relieve unfathomable suffering.
