For the first time since starting to illustrate stuff for others and hoping to become more someday: I feel like I might actually be more than just an illustrator creating what others imagine or want.
I'm sharing the colored draft of a piece I am working on for just me. No one else, no commission, no book, no purpose other than to say something important to me in an artistic way.
I guess drawing all those story and video game characters as a young person paid off in some way. I want to change how the words/things are represented, but this was a start and I wanted to share now as I might not have the gumption later when I overthink it.
I'm curious what you guys think when you look at her.

The Global Dimensions of Brown v. Board of Education
Brown v. Board of Education, perhaps the most famous and influential U.S. Supreme Court decision in the 20th century, centered on the constitutionality of segregation—a seemingly wholly domestic controversy, given it was implemented at the state and local levels. Nevertheless, both the international community and foreign policy considerations undoubtedly influenced the decision in ways that are…

Hungary granted political asylum to former PiS minister
Hungary granted political asylum to Marcin Romanowski, Poland’s MP from the Law and Justice (PiS) party and former deputy justice minister, according to bne IntelliNews.
Romanowski faces numerous criminal charges in Poland, including participation in an organised crime group and embezzlement of public funds. Granting him asylum has further exacerbated diplomatic relations between Warsaw and Budapest.
Ties between the two countries also deteriorated sharply after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, as Hungary defended Russia against sanctions and opposed aid to Ukraine.
Hungary justified its decision by expressing concerns over the fairness of the trial in Poland, said Bartosz Lewandowski, who represented Romanowski. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski called the move an “unfriendly act,” adding that Poland would respond to granting asylum to the fugitive minister.
Poland also planned to seek help from the European Commission to bring a case against Hungary before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), Deputy Interior Minister Wiesław Szczepański declared.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — More than half a million people in Gaza — a quarter of the population — are starving, according to a report Thursday by the U.N. and other agencies that highlights the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s bombardment and siege on the territory in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. The extent of the population’s hunger eclipsed even the near-famines in Afghanistan and Yemen of recent years, according to figures in the report. The report warned that the risk of famine is “increasing each day,” blaming the hunger on insufficient aid entering Gaza. “It doesn’t get any worse,’’ said Arif Husain, chief economist for the U.N.’s World Food Program. “I have never seen something at the scale that is happening in Gaza. And at this speed.” ... At the start of the war, Israel stopped all deliveries of food, water, medicine and fuel into the territory. After U.S. pressure, it allowed a trickle of aid in through Egypt. But U.N. agencies say only 10% of Gaza’s food needs has been entering for weeks. (Dec. 21, 2023 | Source)

From the pursuit of justice to a destructive obsession -
Is the pursuit of justice justified if it undermines order (of an unfair and corrupt system)?

‘I didn't write to you last night, it was too late because of Michael Kohlhaas (do you know him? If not, don't read him! I'll read it to you!), which I read in one sitting, except for a small part that I had already read the day before yesterday. Probably for the tenth time. This is a story that I read with real fear of God, one astonishment over the other, were it not for the weaker, sometimes crudely written ending, it would be something perfect, that perfection that I like to claim does not exist. (I mean, even every supreme work of literature has a tail of humanity, which, if you want and have an eye for it, easily starts to twitch and disturbs the sublimity and godlikeness of the whole.)’ [Franz Kafka to Felice Bauer]

10 states had abortion rights on the ballot, and amendments passed in 7 of them; Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, and New York.
Amendments did not pass in Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota.
Missouri is a particularly notable win because of the state's near total abortion ban, one of the most restrictive in the country.

🇵🇸 Amidst the rubble of his destroyed home, Ashraf Nafedth burns a book he once treasured—a guide to international law. He now sees it as a lie, failing to protect people like him. The unfair treatment of countries like Palestine by powerful nations like the US shatters his trust in these laws. His burning of the book symbolizes his loss of faith in international law's ability to keep him safe and reflects the struggles of many in similar situations.
