April 4, 2024: Coyotes by the Eliot House, Glyn Maxwell
Coyotes by the Eliot House Glyn Maxwell
Tom I’ve a question and all I have is a question. There are lots of coyotes near this old house you lived in. I didn’t expect them here in the green Northeast. Figured them things of rocks and the high sierras. There goes another one bounding for the bushes. First time, I thought: that’s a dog acting really strangely. But it didn’t turn back for approval or get distracted by an insignificant thing, as a dog will tend to. No it was gone by now, it had made me nervous. They’re the size of a family dog but they’re on their own. Folks round here reassure me there’s no danger unless you attack their cubs so I’ll shelve my plan to attack their cubs, chrissakes. Tom, Tom, apologies, I have loved my time in your house.
Last night at dinner we heard a siren wailing off in the town and all of them started howling, all the coyotes for miles around in the bushes aghast, alerting their young, alarming their old, rising and heightening, matching its pitch and power, one near the blue spinning light in its thrall, uniquely bound by this unpredicted visitation. Then after the siren faded they packed it in. What do they think that is, that demands of them and gets of them their love or their terror or both? What do we poets do when we know it’s nothing? Not for them or against them or about them. Tom, I had to be here to ask that question. I expect I’ll have to be gone before you answer.

In search of a movie that's been rotating in my head for a good while now, tossing this one out to the peeps in the audience.
I believe it's medical and/or psychological horror, made at least before 2018, after 2000s or early 2010s. The movie opens with the main man having the same old dream of falling, and in the next scene he's having a party with his wife and friends before his big incoming surgery. They're taking a group picture posing as The Last Supper, the wife stating she's Judas in this one. The man goes through the surgery, but for some reason I can't remember he gets his other leg amputated and is stuck in the hospital as the patient. And then there's some sexy nurse 👉👌 him while idk dropping some hints or plot I don't remember I lost interest at that point.
Edit: Sublime (2007)

Hello yes it is that time of year again, I am listening to the 1970 OG recording of JCS on vinyl and have decided to finally make a list my rankings for every role and aspect of this show. For the record I am a pagan whose only real knowledge of the Jesus story is from this show so forgive my unhinged takes.
Characters:
Jesus:
Ian Gillan (OG album/broadway)
Ted Neeley (1973)
Ola Sålo (Swedish 2014)
Jack Hopewell (North American Tour 2022)
Morgan James (all female cast 2022)
Judas:
Carl Anderson (1973)
Brandon Victor Dixon (2018)
Murray Head (OG album)
Shoshana Bean (all female cast 2022)
Peter Johannson (Swedish 2014)
Honourable mention to Colm Wilkinson (it is a CRIME that there isn't a full recording of the Irish cast)
Mary Magdalene:
Yvonne Elliman (OG album/broadway/1973)
That's it, no one else even comes close
(Maybe an honourable mention for Gunilla Backman)
Pontius Pilate:
Barry Dennen (OG album/1973)
Filippo Strocchi (Vienna 2018)
Orfeh (all female cast 2022)
Caiaphas:
Bob Bingham (OG broadway/1973)
Norm Lewis (NBC 2018) I will ALWAYS stan Norm
Victor Brox (OG album)
Simon Zealotes:
TIE - Larry Marshall (1971)
TIE - Eric Grönwall (NBC 2018)
John Gustafson (OG album)
Tony Vincent (2000)
Herod:
Alice Cooper (NBC 2018)
Mike D'Abo (OG album)
Chris Moyles (Arena Tour 2012)
Overall - staging/set design/costumes:
1973 Movie
NBC 2018
North American Tour 2022
Arena Tour 2012
Honourable mention to the OG broadway production -- I haven't seen enough footage to accurately rank it but I LOVE Jesus's cape in Superstar.
Best overall rendition of Superstar (incl. staging, costumes, etc)
1973 Movie
NBC 2018
Arena Tour 2012
Swedish 2014
Best facial expressions:
Carl Anderson during Simon Zealotes
Carl Anderson right before he engages in respectability politics to slut shame Mary
Tim Minchin when the priests take his joint lmao
Best Superstar costume:
Carl Anderson's white maxi fringe jumpsuit (come ON)
Peter Johannson's shirtless #lewk (I have a whole thing about how Judas should not look like a demon but the sparkly red pants and the Legolas hair are too fantastic)
Brandon Victor Dixon in the full silver fit
Best WTF moments:
That bit in the 1973 film where they all form The Last Supper for a quick second and no one comments on it
When the 1973 crowd says "won't you die for me?" in Hosanna and it just FREEZES on Jesus's face
The Swedish cast pushing Jesus into Jerusalem in a shopping cart
The fighter pilots swooping at Judas after Blood Money in 1973. What WAS that. How did they get that.
That is all lol. Every time we watch even a clip of a new production my mother and I spend 2-3 hours discussing how it fits into our rankings, so this could change.
#jesus christ superstar#y'all are gonna hear me#JCS#jcs 1973#jcs 2012 arena tour#jcs 2000#jcs 2018#swedish jcs

things i adored of the catalan version of jesus christ superstar
so i just saw the catalan version of after discovering there is one (it's here, check it out!) and i think it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. shoutout to @this-is-a-name-dont-worry for making me discover it <3
catalan is my favourite language and i am lucky enough to speak it every day, and this production didn't disappoint at all!
so as a tradition in this blog, let's review my favorite parts!
first of all, i adored the setting and the cast. the costumes were also fabulous. so the whole aesthetic of the show was impeccable, giving me the same vibes as the 2018 nbc version. 10/10 for scene.
now, specific things. many of these things have to do with lyrics because i think the translation was EVERYTHING.
heaven on their minds is always a banger, no matter the production. one thing i loved about this particular version was the lyric obri els ulls i escolta el que t'he de dir / que no veus que no vull veure't morir?, which literally translates to open your eyes and listen to what i have to say / can't you see that i don't want to see you die? (more or less).
that translation changed my life forever.
the percussion break right before what's the buzz? gave me +20 years of life.
then, judas's expression during mary's bit was so funny.
and also, some note changes during strange thing mystifying that i LOVED.
i also think it was clever how judas was arguing with the apostles in the background during the first chorus of everything's alright.
moreover, the way mary soothes judas in the second chorus
AND HOW THEY CHANGE THE LYRICS SO THEY CAN MAKE IT PLURAL (like mary talks to both jesus and judas).
ANNAS IS A GIRL !!!!! and an amazing performer, gotta say.
also, the little dancing of the priests during this jesus must die.
i adored how in hosanna, jesus and judas enter together and then mary joins them (and judas gives her a little kiss!!).
also judas telling the crowd to be chill while caiaphas sings.
and how he gets mad when jesus talks about heaven.
SIMON IS A GIRL !!!! and also SPECTACULAR.
the way pilate and jesus look at each other just before pilate's dream.
the priests being in the temple during the scene.
mary confessing to jesus during i don't know how to love him and jesus ALMOST KISSING HER???? WOAH.
a priest offered judas some food while he was having a mental breakdown in damned for all time and i thought it was the funniest thing ever.
okay so during the last supper happened a lot of things
first, JUDAS SMOKING. i'm always a fan of that (please, don't smoke).
also, during their first confrontation, judas says deixa'm que t'expliqui (let me explain) to jesus, and I WANTED TO CRY
the way the apostles tidy up the table after jesus and judas's first fight.
at the end, judas looks for comfort in the apostles AND THEY REJECT HIM???? the audacity.
gethsemane was in general absolutely stunning, but some things i liked about it is the way it was translated. the song in catalan seems like jesus is asking god to show himself so that he can see that everything is real. HEART B R E A K I N G.
ANOTHER HEARTBREAK. the lyrics just before the song starts say ningú es vol quedar despert amb mi? / no em deixeu sol avui, which translates to none of you wants to stay awake with me? / don't leave me alone today. I MEAN.
some other lyrics that destroyed me were the pre-chorus. in catalan, jesus sings: vas donar-me llum / però ara sols veig fum / esperant que tú vinguessis / vaig donar-te el que tenia / una vida / no pots esperar més d'un home sol, which translates to you gave me light / but now i only see smoke / waiting for you to come / i gave you what i had / a life / you cannot expect more from only a man. I MEAN X2.
peter's voice was one of my favorites.
and also, herod serving cunt in that animal print trousers. chef's kiss.
judas's death affected me more than any other production
in superstar, judas singing de debò el teu sacrifici et converteix en salvador? which translates to does your sacrifice really makes you a savior? in the cuntiest way possible. yes, king.
and to finish, the timer above the cross going down before jesus's death.
if you reached this point, hi! i hope you enjoyed it, 'cause i know i did. check out this production, it is truly amazing. see you in the next post! x

Jesus Dines with a Pharisee
1 And it was that when he entered the house of one of the leaders of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath day, and they were observing him, 2 Behold, one man who was swollen with fluid was there before him. 3 And Yeshua answered and said to the Scribes and to the Pharisees, “Surely it is legal to heal on the Sabbath.” 4 But they were silent, and he held him and healed him and he dismissed him. 5 And he said to them, “Who of you, whose son or ox should fall in a pit on the Sabbath day, would not at once pull and lift him out?” 6 And they could not give him an answer to this.
7 And he told a parable to those who were invited there when he saw those who chose the places of the best seats. 8 “When you are invited by a man to a banquet house, do not go seat yourself at the best seat, lest it may be that he will appoint a man there who is more honorable than you.” 9 “And he who invited you and him should come and say to you, 'Give the place to this man', and you will be ashamed when you stand and you take the last place.” 10 “But whenever you are invited, seat yourself last, that whenever he who invited you should come, he may say to you, 'My friend, come up and be seated', and there shall be glory to you before all of those who sit with you.” 11 “Because everyone who will exalt himself shall be humbled and everyone who will humble himself shall be exalted.”
12 Then he said also to the one who had invited him, “Whenever you make a banquet or supper, do not call your friends, neither your brothers, nor your relatives, nor your rich neighbors, lest also they should invite you and this would be a reward to you.” 13 “But whenever you make a reception, invite the poor, the disabled, the maimed and the blind.” 14 “And you will be blessed, for they have nothing to repay you, for your reward will be in the resurrection of the righteous.” — Luke 14:1-14 | Peshitta Holy Bible Translated (PESH) The Peshitta Holy Bible Translated by Glenn David Bauscher Copyright © 2018 Lulu Publishing; 3rd edition Copyright © 2019. Eliza's movies! (almost all as of 2023)
While many people first learned of Eliza from BTVS, she was actually in 6 full length movies before appearing on Buffy!
- To celebrate that I finished watching everything Eliza this year, I made this for (almost) all of her movies. I know there's things to improve, but it was fun to make in photopea. Once I get better maybe I'll do one that adds in her TV / series appearances. Or maybe I'll finally learn how to make gifs.
Credits: all images are from ElizaDushku.org, except Dear Albania which is from IMDB. very light mods to a few by me.
Nerd notes: - this does not include Mapplethorpe (2018) because she doesn't appear in it, although she produced it - screencaps for Bye Bye Love, Journey, Off Season, and The Saint - all other images (except for Dear Albania) are production stills - these are mostly in chronological order, with some minor adjustments - this leaves out 4 movies, 2 of which I haven't seen, all of which are supposedly shorts - haven't seen Fishing with George (1994) or The Last Supper (2006), I cannot find either - this also leaves out One Shot (2011) and The Gable 5 (2014) which you can find easily
#eliza dushku#eliza dushku movies and shows#if i was better i would include a link to ED Daily for each movie#but i couldn't figure out how to get that HTML code to work#eliza scary movies#<- bc some of these are scary

I see you reblogged the affair rumour in Endgame, and let me tell you something Omid only brought the affair rumour to make people believe it’s true and that the Harkles were used to cover it up (aka the Squad version). I read that part and goodness he contradicts at least 3 times.
First he says it was started by the Sun, in reality it was started by Daily Mail (Richard Eden)
Second he says that no book or other massive publication have ever discussed it, when in fact Tina Brown already brought it and conclude the same, we have no details, I’ve been told is false, just gossip started out of nothing.
Then he said that The Sun only published the rift between the ladies but didn’t publish all the details they had of why the rift started (hinting that was because an affair but because of legal reasons they couldn’t print more of it). But then he said that journalists only had more details until June 2019 (the suppers). So they had the details or not?
And last, he linked Giles Coren with Camilla’s son, when maybe they know each other, but failed to say that H&M also had a dinner with him at SoHo weeks before.
He is only out there repeating the Sugars timeline about the affair, and how H&M where used to cover up (when we all know the negative stories about them started since October 2018)
At this point we know what is going on, but if this idiot is wrong in all those details, imagine how many lies are there. Won’t be surprised if he also invented that was Charles the r*acist
Omid Scobie is full of more shit than my orchard and I have 23 chickens and 9 ducks who call it home.

Today I learnt that the only jcs productions with matching last supper tempos are 2012 arena and 2018 nbc. I was going to mash as many versions as possible together but now I guess it's a brandon victor dixon x tim minchin duet (headphones are highly recommended)

April 4, 2023: I Know Someone, Mary Oliver
I Know Someone Mary Oliver
I know someone who kisses the way a flower opens, but more rapidly. Flowers are sweet. They have short, beatific lives. They offer much pleasure. There is nothing in the world that can be said against them. Sad, isn’t it, that all they can kiss is the air. Yes, yes! We are the lucky ones.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Lost in the hubbub surrounding California's new $20-per-hour minimum wage for fast food workers is how that raise could impact public schools, forcing districts to compete with the likes of McDonald's and Wendy's for cafeteria workers amid a state budget crunch.
The minimum wage law that took effect Monday guarantees at least $20-per-hour for workers at fast food restaurant chains with at least 60 locations nationwide. That doesn't include school food service workers, historically some of the lowest-paid workers in public education.
Yet demand for school meals is higher than ever in California, the first state to guarantee free meals for all students regardless of their family's income. And demand is projected to fuel an increase of more than 70 million extra meals in California schools this year compared to 2018, according to the state Department of Education.
But these jobs typically have lots of turnover and are harder to fill. The minimum wage boost for fast food workers could make that even more difficult.
“They are all very worried about it. Most are saying they anticipate it will be harder and harder to hire employees,” said Carrie Bogdanovich, president of the California School Nutrition Association.
Statewide, some districts have already taken steps to compete in the new reality. Last year, the Sacramento Unified School District — anticipating the law's passage — agreed to a 10% increase for its food service workers and other low-paying jobs, followed by another 6% increase July 1 of this year to bump their wages up to $20 per hour.
Cancy McArn, the district's chief human resources officer, said it was the largest single raise in the district in nearly three decades.
“We are looking not only at competing with districts and comparing with districts, we're also looking at fast food places,” McArn said.
In Southern California, San Luis Coastal Unified doubled its food service staff to 40 people after seeing a 52% increase in the number of students eating school meals. The district prepares 8,500 meals daily for 7,600 students across 15 school sites — breakfast, lunch and even supper options for youth in after-school sports and activities.
The district has since limited the number of its entry-level positions, which are the hardest to fill, while seeking to hire more for complex roles like “culinary lead” and “central kitchen supervisor” that require more skills and hours — making them more attractive to job seekers.
“That’s allowed us to be more competitive,” said Erin Primer, director of food and nutrition services for the San Luis Coastal Unified School District.
Tia Orr, executive director of the Services Employees International Union California — which represents both school food service workers and fast food employees — said school districts and other service industries must consider raising wages because of this new law.
“This is a good thing, and it is long overdue,” she said.
But some districts are limited in what they can do. In the Lynwood Unified School District in Los Angeles County, the starting salary for food service workers is $17.70 per hour and maxes out at $21.51 per hour, according to Gretchen Janson, the district's assistant superintendent of business services. She said these workers only work three hours per day, meaning they aren't eligible for health benefits.
Janson says the district is waiting to see how employees react, adding: “We just don't have the increase in revenue to be able to provide additional funding for staff.”
Nuria Alvarenga has worked food service in the Lynwood School District for 20 years. She makes $21 per hour now, but said she could likely earn more in fast food.
While she said several co-workers were considering finding other jobs, she hasn't decided yet what she will do. She normally works at an elementary school, but has been filling in recently at a high school where she enjoys seeing former students recognize her as they stand in line for lunch.
“I'm so glad they still remember me,” she said.
School food service workers have gotten more support in recent years under a state push to expand school meals and make them more nutritious. That included $720 million in recent years for upgrades to school kitchens to better prepare fresh meals, plus $45 million to create an apprenticeship program to professionalize the industry.
It would be difficult for lawmakers to mandate a raise for school food workers given the complexities of the state's school funding formula. That's why some advocacy groups, including the Chef Ann Foundation, proposed a state-funded incentive program that would have given school food workers who completed an apprenticeship program a $25,000 bonus payable over five years.
That idea didn't make it into Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's budget proposal released in January. The state is facing a multibillion dollar budget deficit, limiting new spending.
But pay raises aren't the only incentives school districts can offer. There's also health insurance, paid vacation, no night or weekend shifts and a pension that could guarantee a monthly income after retirement. Plus, school food workers have predictable hours, letting them work other jobs if they wish — or in summer when school is out.
“Restaurants are laying off employees. They're cutting hours,” said Eric Span, director of nutrition services for the Sweetwater Union High School District in San Diego County. “I think we should position ourselves to really talk about some stability.”
Michael Reich, a labor economics professor at the University of California-Berkeley, said those factors could favor school districts when competing for workers.
“Working in a school cafeteria gives you more stability, job security and maybe less stress than in a profit making institution,” he said. “So there's a lot of advantages from a community standpoint. But that's not to say they don't also want to get more money.”
