the single stair stuff is interesting. read at your own psychic peril. there's some conversation in "my community" about this pertaining to whether deregulation is necessarily austerity. what's going on is that americans think, this is the land of mainly chicken plant and warehouse fires, single family rental fires, sending moms to prison for house fires, intentional vacancy fires, anti abortion arson, and, once, nursing home fires, really big hotel fires. this is not the land of apartment fires! and what i notice about these two topics together is that we rarely remark that we borrowed "austerity" from the uk in the first place

KEEP ME POSTED A DEATH STRANDING Fanart
It has been a while since I last walked across the UCA and I'm missing it a lot (probably 'cos weird start of the year just got weirder). The tranquil silence, the gorgeous landscapes. I definitely have to return some day soon (maybe after ALAN WAKE II).
And here be some closeups.

Happy Belated Valentine's Day! 💕
I got to transform paint this background for the Solar Opposites holiday special! It was such a joy to make all the colors fit for such a love struck occasion! I definitely took color inspiration from the target valentines day section, it had to look aesthetic!
Solar Opposites Valentine's Day special is on Hulu!

actually, on my desk at work i have this old photocopy i made of these photos i found in an early 70s experimental planning report. it's a series of photos approaching the capitol building (which sits at the end of an avenue) from the east. these are the three or four blocks where i situate the history of the city (and so on upward). in the photos you pass by the site of a 1934 hotel fire where 34 people died, including seven state legislators, among other things--but this event is low on the list, as far as these blocks go, for me. a river cuts north-south across the avenue, and the hotel sat on its west bank, on the north side of the road. across the river from it there was a (lost) mayan revival art deco building that was built for the city's first permanent state liquor control store after repeal of prohibition. this building appears in a john margolies photograph many decades later as a furniture store. on the river there, there had been lumber yards--needing to be floated, et cetera--since the beginning of the city, on and off, and therefore also furniture stores and so on, on and off. by the time margolies got there the block was something of a furniture district, but also something of a vice district. there was (and remains) a single strip club across from that building. i knew a good deal about this strip club, because when i was an undergrad in women's council, i found all these boxes of news clippings in our room, about how women's council marched on this strip club in 1993. i was asked by an architecture historian to situate that margolies photograph and identify the building. margolies only had a handful of lansing photographs and most of the others are of buildings that are still standing. at the time he asked, we didn't have a location for this building. i don't think it was really widely known except by people who may remember it. when i started to work on this, i had already been mulling around something a block up the avenue, on the south side. this wasn't the thing itself, but i remember that there was at least one jazz club on this block that shows up in a green book. and that john sinclair said at one point--this part i swear but i can't source anymore--it was the first place he ever got arrested for weed. i always tell people that. everyone! there's a biggby coffee there or something like that now. all the old buildings gone. at this end of these blocks is where a lot of my contemporary organizing against development takes place. but back then, i began to tell this story about two protracted struggles that play out between the kerns hotel site and the end of downtown--two or three blocks. one struggle on the north side of the avenue, one on the south. i had thought of them as one story of liberalism and one story of neoliberalism, but they are just the story of the articulation between them. on the south, there was a "sin strip" (that's what they called it). it wasn't really called that until the later seventies, after harry mohney moved to the city officially (instead of just unofficially). he had been in the courts all over america over smut, and he was still running one of america's first real porn empires out of rural shiawassee county. in every city in michigan there was a porn shop owner getting prosecuted for show. tons of them came out of mohney's warehouses. with a michigan supreme court case in 1977 obscenity passes out of speech and into the political realm of local control (and, incidentally, the era of the preemption law). this is what that looks like by 1992:
on the north side of the avenue, on the east bank of the river, across from where the old kerns hotel was, by the 1980s, the city had a block grant to buy out the the once-furniture row to build what is now the convention center. the last parcel holding out was that mayan revival building, which happened to be owned by a lawyer who wanted to make a case out of it. so that goes on and on. in 1982 there was even a fire. so an economic development company convention center is obviously this entire figure, but it a also goes great in lansing, because we had this parallel story just north of here of the absolute stupidest civic center building in all of american urban renewal. the lawyer from the convention center fight, his son is on the board of my work. the parking lot my motorist coworkers park in has been a parking lot since the early sixties, when the city tore down a bunch of rowhouses. they were the first buildings the city took by eminent domain. almost nobody knows this, because once people learned about the highways, they stopped looking at anything else. nothing ever got built there, so it's a parking lot. this isn't the same story as my block, although i love the afters of urban renewal. i think it is quite interesting to think of this avenue as just at the border of what was eminent domainable, so then this other story could happen.
when i went to flip through my folder of on this block i saw this:
which i have because it's this block, but. it's not actually that hotel fires are exceptional or interesting, it's the opposite. it's that they are precisely the pattern of all american development (which is exactly why they end up, and essentially end, in las vegas in the eighties.) however, seven state legislators is pretty good

Okay, out of yoga and just because I was percolating on it as I was incorrectly using meditation at the end of the class, haha, but I do think the show is also saying something very specific when it has Louis unable to create art instantly turn around and seek to own, then profit off it without any respect for the artist who made it.
#i mean obviously i've been thinking this for a while given i wrote it into fic#but i think that idea of art as a product instead of art as something to be experienced is direct commentary on the cultural landscape#as it exists right now#but also of this sense of how people who can't do it both use and undervalue the people who can#it's going to be really interesting to see next season what they do with the fact that lestat will be making music#i actually could see them bringing louis back to photography but what that means is anyone's guess#also unrelated but i think i might've figured out a fic for one of the kinktober prompts which is delightful and might actually be fun#instead of angsty haha
