Native Tribe To Get Back Land 160 Years After Largest Mass Hanging In US History

Golden prairies and winding rivers of a Minnesota state park also hold the secret burial sites of Dakota people who died as the United States failed to fulfill treaties with Native Americans more than a century ago. Now their descendants are getting the land back.
The state is taking the rare step of transferring the park with a fraught history back to a Dakota tribe, trying to make amends for events that led to a war and the largest mass hanging in US history.
“It’s a place of holocaust. Our people starved to death there,” said Kevin Jensvold, chairman of the Upper Sioux Community, a small tribe with about 550 members just outside the park.
The Upper Sioux Agency state park in south-western Minnesota spans a little more than 2 sq miles (about 5 sq km) and includes the ruins of a federal complex where officers withheld supplies from Dakota people, leading to starvation and deaths.
Decades of tension exploded into the US-Dakota war of 1862 between settler-colonists and a faction of Dakota people, according to the Minnesota Historical Society. After the US won the war, the government hanged more people than in any other execution in the nation. A memorial honors the 38 Dakota men killed in Mankato, 110 miles (177km) from the park.
Jensvold said he has spent 18 years asking the state to return the park to his tribe. He began when a tribal elder told him it was unjust Dakota people at the time needed to pay a state fee for each visit to the graves of their ancestors there.

Lawmakers finally authorized the transfer this year when Democrats took control of the house, senate and governor’s office for the first time in nearly a decade, said State Senator Mary Kunesh, a Democrat and descendant of the Standing Rock Nation.
Tribes speaking out about injustices have helped more people understand how lands were taken and treaties were often not upheld, Kunesh said, adding that people seem more interested now in “doing the right thing and getting lands back to tribes”.
But the transfer also would mean fewer tourists and less money for the nearby town of Granite Falls, said Mayor Dave Smiglewski. He and other opponents say recreational land and historic sites should be publicly owned, not given to a few people, though lawmakers set aside funding for the state to buy land to replace losses in the transfer.
The park is dotted with hiking trails, campsites, picnic tables, fishing access, snowmobiling and horseback riding routes and tall grasses with wildflowers that dance in hot summer winds.
“People that want to make things right with history’s injustices are compelled often to support action like this without thinking about other ramifications,” Smiglewski said. “A number, if not a majority, of state parks have similar sacred meaning to Indigenous tribes. So where would it stop?”
In recent years, some tribes in the US, Canada and Australia have gotten their rights to ancestral lands restored with the growth of the Land Back movement, which seeks to return lands to Indigenous people.

A National Park has never been transferred from the US government to a tribal nation, but a handful are Co-managed with Tribes, including Grand Portage National Nonument in northern Minnesota, Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona and Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska, Jenny Anzelmo-Sarles of the National Park Service said.
This will be the first time Minnesota transfers a state park to a Native American community, said Ann Pierce, director of Minnesota State Parks and trails at the natural resources department.
Minnesota’s transfer, expected to take years to finish, is tucked into several large bills covering several issues. The bills allocate more than $6m to facilitate the transfer by 2033. The money can be used to buy land with recreational opportunities and pay for appraisals, road and bridge demolition and other engineering.
Chris Swedzinski and Gary Dahms, the Republican lawmakers representing the portion of the state encompassing the park, declined through their aides to comment about their stances on the transfer.

It is my observation, especially following October 7th, that Leftists do NOT actually support indigenous land back movements.
At all. Period.
Leftists just love to USE indigenous people that they can define as "oppressed victims" within their extremely narrow definition of that term. That is, Leftists love to FETISHIZE non-white indigenous people who have not yet achieved sufficient success in their land-back goals.
But once these indigenous non-white people who have been classed as "oppressed victims" start to succeed in their land back movements, as Jews have done, Leftists stop fetishizing them and start attacking them.
This pattern is also true with white indigenous people, such as Scottish, Irish, and Welsh people of Celtic origin.
Like, remember when Humza Yousaf went on a mask-off rant about how there are too many "White" people in positions of power in Scotland? This is a great example of how Leftists will abandon indigenous people once they feel they have achieved a sufficient level of success.
The people of Celtic origin who are indigenous to Scotland, and who have been persecuted ever since Emperor Fucking Claudius of Rome launched his invasion of Britain in 43 CE -- yes, those indigenous Celtic people of Scotland are considered White.
80 years later in 122 CE, Emperor Hadrian began construction on Hadrian's Wall to keep the indigenous tribes of Scotland north of the Roman province of Britannia.
About 250 years later in the late 300s CE, the Western Roman Empire started to contract (ultimately falling to Germanic "Barbarian" tribes in 476 CE), and this led to the fall of Roman Britain in the early 400s CE. As Roman forces left Britain, this led to a power vacuum, which allowed for the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain in the mid-400s CE. This set up a conflict between Scotland and what would become England (aka Angle-Land, or Land of the Angles) that lasts to this day.
Sorry to break it to Humza Yousaf, but indigeneity doesn't presuppose a specific skin color. But Yousaf is too corrupted by Noble Savage bigotry to acknowledge this.
This case is worth noting because the reason Yousaf was able to get away with complaining that there are too many Celtic people in Scotland is precisely because Scottish people have achieved enough of their goals fighting against England for Leftists to abandon them. And Leftists are not only abandoning them -- Leftists like Yousaf are outright attacking them.
Again, Leftists ONLY give a shit about indigenous rights and land back movements if they can class these indigenous people as "oppressed victims". Indigenous people are "supposed" to exist solely as inspiration porn for depraved Leftists to idealize.
Once these "oppressed victims" start to reclaim their indigenous land, and (most importantly) start to advance in society, Leftists turn on them.
Leftists are trapped in a kind of Drama Triangle. They jerk off to fantasies of "Rescuing" these "Victims" from evil "Persecutors", and once they can't live out this self-insert savior fantasy, they have no more use for these indigenous people they once claimed to support.
We must remember -- Antisemitism and Philosemitism are just two sides of the same bloody sword.
That is why Dara Horn's title, People Love Dead Jews, is so accurate. The only time that Leftists have ever "loved" Jews is after we were genocided by the Nazis, because Leftists could then define a clear "Victim" and "Persecutor" dynamic between Jews and Nazis, and Leftists could imagine themselves as "Rescuers" in that dynamic.
Leftists love Jews ONLY when Jews are dying or dead, and ONLY when we are slaughtered by a group of people that Leftists can definitively class as a "Persecutor."
For instance, according to this Leftist paradigm, White Supremacists should NOT be "allowed" to murder Jews, because White Supremacists are classed as "Persecutors".
Although even that dynamic is changing, judging by how many Leftists celebrated when Robert Bowers, a white supremacist Christian, (mis)quoted the Gospels (he stated, "Jews are the children of Satan, John 8:44"), and then went on a murderous rampage while screaming "all Jews must die." He slaughtered eleven Jews at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on October 27, 2018, and wounded many more.
And immediately following the White Supremacist terrorist attack, many Leftists CELEBRATED that atrocity. I have the screenshots.
Now, according to the Leftist paradigm, Islamists like Hamas ARE "allowed" to rape, torture, and murder as many Jews as they want, because Leftists consider Islamists to be "Victims" in their Drama Triangle. Leftists also consider Islamists to be more "Victimy" than Jews, and so in that dynamic where Leftists maintain their place as "Rescuers", Jews become "Persecutors" and Islamists are "Victims."
This is why Leftists around the world celebrated the October 7th pogrom, where Hamas terrorists raped, tortured, murdered, and enslaved 1400 Jews.
Leftists applied this depraved "Drama Triangle" paradigm to Hamas' massacre. Leftists stood in the middle in their self-appointed position as "Rescuers", and declared that the people they class as "Victims" should be allowed to brutally slaughter the people that they class as "Persecutors."
It is a SICK and MONSTROUS "game" in which Leftists maintain control, and pit Jews and Muslims against each other in a battle for who is more "oppressed".
This is also why Leftists refuse to study the 1400 year history of Arab Colonialism. They don't want to learn history because it will challenge their false "oppressor/oppressed" paradigm for how they believe the world works. They refuse to learn about the Rashidun, Umayyad, and Abbasid Caliphates. They refuse to learn about the Ottoman Empire. They refuse to think about what languages the indigenous peoples in MENA countries spoke before they were forced to speak Arabic and convert to Islam at swordpoint. The Lebanese people, for instance, are NOT Arabs. They are descendants of the Ancient Phoenician people who remained in the region, and didn't escape to found Carthage (in modern day Tunisia) due to trade disputes with Egypt. Lebanese people speak Arabic due to Arab Colonialism; it is not their indigenous language.
What I've learned, especially since October 7th, is that Leftists HATE Jews when we win. Leftists "love" Dead Jews, but Leftists hate Thriving Jews. Leftists hate Successful Jews. The only time they "love" us is when we lose to such a massive degree that we lose EVERYTHING like we did in the Shoah. And even then, their "love" is not actually love -- it is PITY.
Leftists' only currency is being the "Rescuer" in a Drama Triangle, and they can't "Rescue" someone who doesn't fit their narrow, toxic, destructive definition of "Victim."
So, here is what this means for all other land back movements. And y'all better take note:
LEFTISTS WILL ABANDON EVERY OTHER INDIGENOUS GROUP WHO BEGINS TO SUCCEED IN THEIR LAND BACK GOALS.
If the Māori people in Aotearoa, or the Indigenous Australians, or First Nations tribes in the Americas, or any other indigenous group start to achieve success in their land back movements, the Left will similarly turn on them and try to destroy them.
Why? Well, again, because indigenous people are only useful to Leftists as inspiration porn.
I really hope that other indigenous people are paying attention to what Leftists are doing to the Jewish people. Because as we know from thousands of years of history, what starts with the Jews never ends with the Jews. We're always the first to be slaughtered, but we're never the last.
Am I the only one who thinks that if Israel wasn't a Jewish state, the left would praise it as a very beautiful thing? There's the obvious reason that it's a decolonization project, which leftist typically love, but it's deeper than that.
Israel has one big culture, the Jewish culture, but it's also influenced by many different cultures because of thousands of years of diaspora. It's a beautiful collection of many cultures coming together binded by another. People are finally returning to their homeland, but influenced by different cultures across the world. It's multicultural while being one, together. That's what the left likes. But no. Instead, they say, "stolen culture".

people need to realize that what’s going on with palestine and israel isn’t about anyone being jewish.
there are jewish palestinians, muslim palestinians, christian palestinians being trapped in what is essentially an open air prison for children and the elderly with no food, water, or electricity just because they’re palestinian.
this is about colonization, and unfortunately so many people are falling for the blatant propaganda being turned out by an apartheid government (israel).
the only solution to stop all this violence is to give palestine their land back. that is the solution.
#free palestine#and before anyone says it: there is a difference between everyday israeli citizens and the israeli government#of course i sympathize with the people caught in the middle#but i will never stand with the israeli government#i am a supporter of the land back movement. that also extends to countries likes palestine#it is not antisemitic to stand with palestine

I'm curious,
If an Fairy changes court, like Upper(Fairy) to Circuit(Pixie), what happens to the Lower court(Anti-fairy) counterpart?
Do they just cease to exist? Will they come back if the change is reversed? Will they have any idea of what happened?
In addition to that, does the Leisure court(specialty fairies) have a Lower court counterpart, or is it just the Upper court that has that?
And if it's only the upper court that has that, why only them?
Besides Timmy, Pixies and Leisure fairies actually can't change courts! They're stuck the way they're born because they technically lack a living counterpart!
Leisure Fairies are bound to their specialty, while Pixies are bound to their work. But Uppers and Lowers are bound to each other, which is why they can swap places. If a fairy's counterpart dies or disappears, so does the original and vis-versa.
The only exception to this rule is if the "Binding" of the fairies are changed before the counterpart dies.
Additional fun fact! There's technically 4 Fairy "realms". They're stacked on top of each other, and it's progressively harder to get to each one the higher they are (Only Leisure Fairies can access ""Olympus"", for example). They have official names but nobody bothers to use them.
Bitties Series: [Start] > [Previous] > [Next]
#fairly oddparents#fop#fop a new wish#asks#valleymyristica#itty bitties fop au#yiipieeee worldbuilding!!!!#its hard for fairies to reach the Pixies' land because they. dont really have much foundational clouds for you to float on.#pixies are flighty creatures who spur up clouds where ever they go! so if you're not good at flying or constant movement you'll fall down#its nearly almost always raining in anti-fairy world. very gloomy. full of thunder and storms and the likes.#you could easily slip from fairy world INTO anti fairy world and then face the annoying hassles of trying to get back out#nobody's quite sure how to get to the supposed olympus#it takes a lot of strength and power to fly up that high that only leisure fairies have#jorgen used to be able to go up there but since he lost his wings hes been bound to fairy world unless he teleports#also also bindings!!!!#fairies all have a binding to something its just that they take different forms!#fairies and anti fairies are the weirdest ones because they're like. bound together.#which gives a misconception that for every fairy there's an equal and opposite fairy#absolutely none of this information is relevant to the storyline for itty bitties#i just think its neat :D

While I'm aware that spite is not the ideal political or social motivator, I am increasingly aware that I am a pragmatist above almost all else and am a big fan of the "butts in seats" approach to politics and therefore believe that, if for no reason other than spite, all USAmerican Millennials and Gen Zers should be vocal proponents of the land back movement.
You've made it financially impossible to own a home? I don't think this land belongs to any of us. Suck on that, landlord.
Yes obviously there are philosophical and moral reasons to support the land back movement and I'm sure someone will tell me it's "not that simple!" which is not the point.
#land back#land back movement#us politics#pragmatic politics#maybe i need to resurrect the ol politics blogg because i feel like some of my political thoughts are#not going to fly with some of ya. mostly because they are pragmatic in the extreme#i think every politician should have 2 wolves inside them one is a starry eyed idealist and the other a work hardened pragmatist#also land back in response to the citizenship bullshit#you dont think this group should be considered citizens? i dont think ANY of us should be considered citizens. suck on that.

Another confounding factor is also that in many cases original inhabitants almost never just get wiped out or pushed off the land. Often the “new” inhabitants are also descendants of the original inhabitants as well, in some form or another. Look at Palestinians, in fact. The government of Israel loves to put out propaganda that the “Arabs” came to Palestine in the 7th century, but they didn’t replace the original population. Certainly, they changed the indigenous people’s culture and ruled over them, but according to genetic studies, only 20% of the modern Palestinian gene pool is Arabic. There’s also plenty of genetic and linguistic evidence that indigenous Palestinians and Hebrews were branches of the same people who both inhabited that general region. Further, Arabs are also Semitic, just like Hebrews, and that shared linguistic history suggests that they have a closer common ancestry than non-Semitic cultures; thus even here we may say they likely shared the general region with each other. Not that any of this should matter, for the reasons above, but I think it’s also very important to recognize that it’s not even close to as clear cut a case as, say European colonization of whole continents that their ancestors had never even set foot on before replacing their indigenous people. In cases where cultures were already contiguous with each other, there’s rarely one that can claim they were there “first” and were thus “robbed” of their land by the other culture.

This one gives a general summary of the importance of women in the fight for the idependence of Mozambique
And for a more present context
#I would need to check for a more detailed breakdown of the post independence because most of what I read was through Catarina Isabel Caldera#Martins and a lot of the literature is in portugese only#I THINK I've read Desiree Lewis coment a bit on it but I read Desiree along with a collection of authors under Oyèronké's name#and I have embarassingly traded information of what I read on what#but as often with revolutionary movement everywhere#a lot of talk about how the liberation of women and of the land are deeply connected BEFORE taking power. not a lot of action after#but I gotta disclaimer women are hardly the only category that felt betrayed after the first mandate#and pulling back to the field I have actual solid knowledge of that is literature if you haven't read Pauline Chiziane she's a delight#this post probably looks so random context is I mentioned conversations I had with mozamvican women who fought for independence about this#tendency of colonised men to only oppose patriarchy when the pater familias is the colonizer but be quite happy to occupy the same position#himself in betrayal of colonised women of their own lands in a post about this as a larger phenomena#but it's true everywhere every year our left here claims abortion is too divisive and it's 'not the time yet' to demand it#thank you Worker's Party for all this nothing#.txt

Tribes welcome return of ancestral lands
Tuesday, February 14, 2023 By Kevin Abourezk, Indianz.Com Kimberly Morales Johnson can’t help but imagine the land that today is Los Angeles as her ancestors would have seen it centuries ago. The Tongva people used the canyons of the San Gabriel Mountains as trading routes with the indigenous people of the Mojave desert. Last year, the Tongva reclaimed land in Los Angeles for the first time in almost 200 years after being forced to give up their lands and having their federal status terminated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1950.
Sharon Alexander, a non-Native woman, donated a one-acre property in Altadena, California, to the Tongva after learning about the #LandBack movement during the 2016 Democratic National Convention and discovering that the Tongva were the original inhabitants of Los Angeles.
Johnson, vice president of the Tongva Taraxat Paxaavxa Conservancy, a nonprofit set up by the community to receive the land, said the tribe has big plans for the property. “It needs a lot of work, but we’re all dedicated to it,” she said.
In 2022, thousands of acres of private and public land in America were returned to the care of Native peoples. Many of these lands were returned to their original inhabitants, including the one-acre property in Los Angeles.
A website called the Decolonial Atlas created a “Land Back” map charting the locations of land returns that occurred last year. Other land returns that occurred last year include 40 acres around the Wounded Knee National Historic Landmark, the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre. The Oglala Sioux Tribe and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe bought the land for $500,000.
“It’s a small step towards healing and really making sure that we as a tribe are protecting our critical areas and assets,” Oglala Sioux Tribe President Kevin Killer told The Associated Press.
Although not a land return, the Biden administration last year signed an agreement giving five tribes – the Hopi, Navajo, Ute Mountain Ute, Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, and Pueblo of Zuni – greater oversight of the 1.3-million acre Bears Ears National Monument in Utah.
Last year, the Rappahannock Tribe celebrated the return of more than 400 acres along the Rappahannock River that is home to a historic tribal village named Pissacoack and a four-mile stretch of white-colored cliffs.
“Your ancestors cherished these lands for many generations and despite centuries of land disputes and shifting policies, your connections to these cliffs and to this river remain unbroken,” Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland said at an event celebrating the land return. One of the largest land returns last year involved the purchase of more than 28,000 acres by the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa Tribe in Minnesota.
The Conservation Fund, an environmental nonprofit, sold the land to the tribe after purchasing the land from a lumber manufacturer in 2020. Emilee Nelson, Minnesota associate state director of The Conservation Fund, said her organization bought the land from the PotlatchDeltic Corporation after the company decided to divest of much of its Minnesota land holdings. The Conservation Fund bought 72,000 acres from the company, including 28,000 acres that were within the Bois Forte Reservation. The Boise Fort Band lost the land following passage of the Dawes Act of 1887, which led to the allotment of the land to private landowners. “Where this land was located made a lot of sense for the tribe to own it,” Nelson said.
However, he said, tribes don’t always want to purchase land or even accept a land donation, especially if they don’t think they’ll be able to put it into federal trust status. He offered advice to those considering donating their land to a tribe. “If you want to make a donation, sell the land and make a donation,” he said.
As for the one-acre land donation to the Tongva, Kimberly Morales Johnson said the tribe plans to use the land to create a community center where it will be able to host cultural workshops and where Tongva people will be able to gather plants sacred to their people, including the acorns from the oak trees on the property.
“This is about self-determination and sovereignty,” she said. The tribe is also allowing a tribal artist to live on the land and take care of it, she said. The Tongva have also begun working to return Native plants to the property and remove invasive species.
“This whole LandBack movement is rooted in healing, and instead of looking at land as a commodity, we’re looking at it as a way to have a relationship with the land and with each other and bringing back our traditions, our language, our food, our culture,” she said.

Mexican is indigenous/native American, whatever you want to call us. We were here before the colonizers/settlers, whatever you want to call yourself.
This was our land before it was stolen from us. We are not the foreigners here.
You can't honestly sleep well at night after your people built a third world society on our mass Graves and still wave a flag that was cruelly and unnecessarily soaked in the blood of our people. That's just sick.
Our people deserve better.
And I truly believe that we will have our land back in time. Probably not in my lifetime, and no, we won't take it back as violently as it was stolen from us, because we aren't like you, but we will have it back.
I wasn't raised around much of the Mexican culture, but I realize that that's not okay and I'm doing all that I can now to learn for my people.
My people who are still being murdered and sterilized by America. We will remain. We are common men. You cannot snuff us out.

Excerpt from this story from Grist:
After decades of advocacy, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe will see 18 acres of land returned to them by the state of Minnesota. The move comes after lawmakers passed legislation last month to formally return state trust lands inside the boundaries of the Mille Lacs Band’s reservation.
Minnesota’s returning of Indigenous land is part of a much broader global landback movement that has been gaining momentum in part due to studies that show Indigenous guardianship leads to more effective ecological outcomes. As conserving biodiversity grows more critical amid rising global temperatures, Indigenous self-determination and traditions of relating to land and waters are increasingly recognized as vital climate solutions.
“This is a great opportunity for us as the Mille Lacs Band to preserve that land in a way that is respectful of nature,” said Kelly Applegate, commissioner of natural resources at the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. He said the land transfer is expected to be complete over the next month. “Whatever we do, it’ll be in a lens of environmental protection.”
The Mille Lacs’ lands in question are known as state trust lands. These trust lands, established at statehood, are grants of land from the federal government primarily created to support education and are found across the western United States. On the Mille Lacs reservation, those 18 acres represent only a fraction of the 2.5 million acres of state trust lands across Minnesota, including nearly 344,000 acres inside the borders of eight reservations. Trust lands in Minnesota typically generate revenue for education through mining, timber, and land sales, and for the 2023-24 school year, trust lands generated almost $49 million for public and charter schools. The trust lands on Mille Lacs, however, have only generated about $45 annually.
Minnesota is one of 15 states that owns land within federal Indian reservations that generate revenue for non-Indigenous institutions.

"Check out this Pakistani academic, born and raised in Canada, whose parents didn't see anything wrong with moving to a country that was founded as a colony, usurping the rights of the indigenous population...*
They could say, 'Hey, we didn't choose to be born into a colonial country.' Sure! None of us picked the countries we were born in, but we do choose the countries we live in. She could have easily moved to any country she saw fit, thanks to the power of the passports of these Colonial countries...
But I'm sure they'll have some convenient excuse for continuing to live in these wonderful Western countries, such as, 'We'll leave once we decolonize these Colonial countries.'"
A really good look at Western leftists who decry the "white settler colonialism," while continuing to benefit from its legacy, and (by extension) hypocritically condemn Jews and demand Israelis do what they won't do in their own countries.
#leftist hypocrisy#harris sultan#israel is a land back decolonizing movement#but EVEN IF IT WASN'T (which it is) the mind-blowing hypocrisy of demanding ISRAELIS go back to whatever country their parents came from#when these same Western brats choose to stay in their own colonialist countries#is a hypocrisy that I've been reeling about since oct 8th 2023#Youtube
