So, whilst I wait for some inspiration to hit me, I will keep working on my Pokemon AU :D
This time I am going to delve into the Lan clan.
Under cut!!!
THE LAN CLAN
The Lan Clan specializes in Ice/Dragon Pokèmon.
The current Gym Leader is Lan Xichen, whilst Lan Qiren is a Pokèmon Professor who holds lessons for young trainers at the Gusu Lan Pokèmon Academy.
Lan Wangji, Xichen's brother, is a prodigy among trainers. He will fall in love with Wei Wuxian
They have a very strict and long series of rules if you want to compete with them, but despite having a range of Pokèmon that could actually put anyone in trouble, they are a pretty peaceful clan.
After the Wen clan attacks them, they manage to salvage most of the Pokèmon thanks to the help of Meng Yao, one of Jin Guangshan's bastard children.
I should mention that this is a "everyone lives except those who deserve to die and those I need dead/disappeared for plot convenience" AU.
The Lan clan will be reestablished after the Wen clan is defeated.
Each of the Lans have their own team, as they were encouraged to create one of their own as long as they stuck to mainly Ice/Dragon types
Lan Qiren has an Altaria as companion.
As for LWJ and LXC, they have the below.
Lan Xichen:
Articuno
Ninetails (Alolan form)
Dragonite
Delibird
Latias
Glaceon
Lan Wangji
Dratini (evolving then in Dragonair)
Azumarill (rabbits, k?)
Latios
Froslass (Ice/Ghost type cos Ghost types are Wei Ying's types)
Frosmoth
Lapras
The Lan Juniors are still encouraged to have Ice/Dragon types, but it is quite difficult because a lot of them are legendary Pokèmon and you need to have extra skills, so they get to have more varied teams.
Lan Sizhui in particular, on behalf of him being technically a Wen, is allowed one (1) Fire Pokèmon.
So we have below teams.
Lan Sizhui
Vulpix (the Fire type)
Dewgong (evolved from Seel)
Spheal
Amaura
Vanillite
Sylveon (he was expecting a Vaporeon or a Glaceon, but he loved the Eevee so much that it turned into Sylveon and he was hyper happy anyway)
Lan Jingyi
Glalie
Goomy (he wanted to find a Dratini like Hanguang-jun, but he caught this one instead)
Swinub (a case of Too Many Berries)
Wingull
Snom
Cloyster

Aside from the two films I saw as a kid and the few I read re-tellings of (Sinnoh trilogy and Lucario), I’ve gone into these movies blind, for the most part. Consequently, I don’t know yet just what the connection/gimmick is between Black: Victini and Reshiram and White: Victini and Zekrom. I’m watching Black tomorrow, so hold off on any spoilers, please.
Many of these movies fall into the trap of turning the human CotDs into the de facto protagonists. No matter how much screen time is given over to the main cast, those humans end up being the ones personally involved in the central conflict. Ash and friends end up along for the ride, with Ash serving as a deus ex machina in an often unsatisfying fashion from a dramatic standpoint.
I’ve brought that up before, and such is the case here, at first glance. But there are two key differences. The first is that the CotDs on-hand here end up being the antagonists. The second is that Ash’s involvement feels much more compelling here, because his bond with Victini is so well-handled.
In a way, Ash and Victini’s relationship here is a lot like what he had with Latias in Pokemon Heroes. But here, Victini has a reason to be so affectionate towards Ash; its witnessing his heroism. And the way their bond is incorporated into the plot as a whole is much more effective. Victini itself is absolutely adorable. It’s one of the sweetest Pokemon I’ve seen, its shy playfulness is irresistible, and the decision to saddle it with a rather bleak backstory (it finds the king’s body!) was a bit of a shock. Telling that story via a book is another thing that lends a Heroes vibe to this film, and it’s done very well.
White also has gorgeous art direction. The combination of an American West-style aesthetic in the beginning with a Western/Northern European kingdom is odd, but it works. And Reshiram has one of the most intriguing designs of any Pokemon from its generation. I confess that seeing that Pokemon in action was the one thing about this movie I was most keen on. It wasn’t until seeing this film that I realized there was a huge, mechanical-looking rocket in its tail, which really doesn’t work with the rest of the design.
But while there’s a lot to recommend in this film, it’s got it’s fair share of problems too. The dub is very hit-and-miss. Victini’s trills are sweet and the main cast holds down the fort, but Zekrom’s voice is unintentionally comical. Damon’s voice is dull as bricks, and when coupled with a bland personality, the end result is that one of the central characters is utterly dull. The rest of his family isn’t all that remarkable either. I’ve enjoyed CotDs like Alberto, and others have mattered to their plots, but to date, only Revelation Lugia has succeeded at having interesting, likable CotDs who matter to the story without taking over the through-line of the conflict IMO.
There’s a bigger problem with Damon’s conflict, and it’s his needless cruelty. You can’t say he tortures and plans to sacrifice Victini because he’s a bad guy; he’s not malicious. But there’s no given reason for him to assume that Victini wouldn’t help him if he asked. Once the little guy gets over its shyness, it can’t wait to lend a hand to everyone else. To give Damon’s actions believability, his choice to take Victini so forcefully needed justification.
The pacing of this film, like so many of the others, is also rather sluggish at times. The fights in the castle tower are some of the worst offending scenes, oddly enough, thanks to awkward cutaways slowing the action.
And I really thought that the TRio were going to step up and serve as the main villains for once. They had some good scenes and build-up in the front half of the story. But nope - they’re as expendable here as in nearly every other pokefilm.
Some additional thoughts:
- The credits are awkwardly placed here. By the time they pop up, so much time has been spent in the actual story that they become an unwelcome interruption.
- "I’m fulfilling my mother's dream - how could that be wrong?" When you use psychic on your mother doing it, that's how!
- I’ve been on the fence whether or not Iris’s dub voice really suits her. On balance, I’d have to say it doesn’t. She sounds too young.
- The name introductions are a weird piece of formula. I’m not sure how you could avoid it, but it gets old. Especially when it happens more than once in the movie.
- I’m starting to get a list going of how many names are pronounced differently than I thought they’d be when I first saw them spelled out. Unova is OON-oh-vah rather than ooh-NO-vah, Cilan is CY-lan rather than KEY-lan, Milotic is MIL-oh-tic rather than mil-AUH-tic (I know Milotic doesn’t appear in this movie; that one’s just been bugging me for a while.)

One of my favorite scenes from Crown of the Deep Green.
Lan rushes to greet Eus, after he won a territory war and He immediately turns what is a very normal sibling greeting into a scene of lovers reuniting, in front of their entire household staff.
Bonus -- I think he just likes picking her up.

The Viridescent Crown Chapter 4
"What?" Lan replied, peering up at the knight.
Sir Ross stared down at Lan, curtley elaborating,"The Knight Commander."
"Where is he going?"
“To the doorway."
"Did you not hear the discussion?"
Lan lifted her cup and gently blew on the tea. Though it wasn’t lady-like, it was better than burning one's tongue on a hot drink.
Ross questioned her again as she cautiously sipped on her tea.
"Didn't you send him to the doorway to get rid of him?"
Within Latia’s territory, some of the most dangerous beasts roamed the surrounding lands of the Ice Wall’s doorway.
"Now why would I do that?"
Only then did Lan take her mind off the tea to concentrate on Sir Ross.
"To usurp Master Eustaph’s power within the duchy."
Upon hearing his answer Lan burst into a fit of laughter, she had not expected to hear such a gloomy response from Sir Ross.
Ross however could not figure out the reason for her sudden onset of insanity.
"Is that your plan?" he asked incredulously.
"Isn't it strange to ask such a straightforward question? You basically told me, 'You're trying to kill my brother!'"
Laughing cheerfully, Lan rested her chin in her hand. Her impermeable eyes glistened with mirth.
"That isn’t the case. I'm just counting on this plan to work."
"I believe you."
"You believe in me? You shouldn’t!"
Sir Ross raised his eyebrows, "And why shouldn’t I?"
"For what reason should you trust me?"
"It’s true that you were not formally educated as a Patriarch. Though, I was under the impression that you were taking lessons from a private tutor, but…"
Even so, for a nineteen year old girl to inherit a leadership position in the midst of a disastrous situation and handle it so skillfully upon her first attempt was unbelievable.
"It's as if you were prepared for this, like you've been waiting for this to happen."
"Not at all actually."
Lan cooed as she watched the ripples race across the amber liquid. In fact, this was the very situation that she had wanted to avoid.
She had tried to save her family, yet they died nonetheless.
Lan had come up with a theory: no matter how much she attempted to intervene with the plot, the main story would continue to unfold in a similar manner. It would be difficult to sway the tree of fate.
"I'm just doing my best to help in whatever ways I can. Even now, I feel like my stomach is tying itself in knots."
Lan quickly added, "That doesn’t mean you should include my woes in your report to Eustaph; I don’t want to worry him"
"That is if he's worried about you."
Lan giggled at Sir Ross's snide remark.
"You’re probably right."
"Aren’t you upset?"
When asked by Ross, Lan wrapped her fingertips around the teacup. The wide and shallow characteristics of the porcelain cup had allowed the tea to grow cold.
"Why would I be upset?" Lan countered, sipping at the last of her drink.
"Well…."
For once, Ross didn’t know what to say.
"I want to be a real family with Eus. I don't think it's fair to say that it's impossible to get along as siblings, but I would like us to be closer."
Lan gaze darted back to Sir Ross.
"Though I don’t mean to force the relationship on him. I'm just trying to make amends. Eustaph is in his right, he had been bullied by my mother." she rambled on.
"Though I’m not saying my actions didn’t bother him in the past. But now I want things to go a little differently."
Clink
Lan quickly placed the teacup back on its saucer and poured herself a second cup. Its sweet scent swirled up with the water vapors.
"So in conclusion, I'm not angry. It's all up to Eustaph."
Sir Ross found himself frozen, staring at Lan as if she had sprouted a second head.
Unaware of her escort's befuddlement, Lan went about hoisting another pile of documents from the heaps of paperwork and set them at her desk.
She had known of the dire situation of the duchy’s finances, But, what was the cause of this unprecedented backlog?
Ms. Elizabeth, as the current administrator, would have to be aware of this. To be handling this workload single handedly without complaint, it must have been difficult for her.
'I can't believe she didn't show it. She has the makings of a great administrator.'
It appeared that most of the issues raised against the duchy were due to lack of funding. The bell tower has been requesting repair for several years already…
"Isn't it better to work from the ground up? The road covered by the landslide three years ago still hasn’t been restored, right?' Lan mumbled to herself.
Her first goal was to sort through all these documents.
'Let's cheer up.'
Lan took a deep breath and began to quickly read through the papers. Her ability to speed read was one of her few redeeming qualities, but considering the mountains of documents left, she would have to take it up a notch.
'The formatting of these documents is terrible.'
They all lacked structure and didn’t follow a set rubric. At this point, it was more like a letter to the lord than a document.
'We will need to fix that.'
If we set a few specifications in place going forward, separating the document components and emphasizing data. That would reduce the time needed to read and compare the submitted forms.
Flap.
With the speed that Sir Ross found himself handing papers over to Lan, he wondered if she was truly comprehending what she was reading. By the time she began to slow down, there was a loud knock on the door.
Lan and Sir Ross looked up in surprise.
Sir Ross quickly brought his hand to his sword as the door swung open.
"Lan!"
It was her uncle, Baron Lindbergh.
"Uncle."
Lan rose from her seat.
"May I ask, what are you doing here?"
"I hadn’t seen you all day. I was worried that something may have happened to you!"
Baron Lindbergh huffed his way inside. Sir Ross stood in front of the baron blocking his path.
"Without permission, you cannot meet with the duchess."
"I'm her uncle! Besides, I'm more worried about a guy like you being here!"
"Uncle, he is one of our loyal knights."
Sir Ross’s eyes widened at Lan’s quick defense of him. Lindbergh snorted.
"What loyalty?"
"He may take a seat Sir Ross"
Ross stepped aside without a word, and Lindbergh plopped down into an armchair; ignoring the fact that he hadn’t asked to enter or waited for her to take a seat first. His manners were unbefitting of nobility to the point of being sinful.
Lan sat back down and inquired, without saying too much. "What's the matter?"
"I'm going to assign you another escort."
"Another escort?"
"Yes! Unlike this brute here, he’s a man with loyalty. I highly recommend him; he’s the real deal." Lindbergh shot back.
"No thank you, Sir Ross is more than enough. I don't see a need for another escort."
Lindbergh frowned and growled back. "Lan."
"Yes."
"Are you aware that your mother owed me money?"
Baron Lindbergh brashly pulled a thick envelope out from under his arm.
"She needed to buy a necklace. As it was a sudden loan, it was very difficult for me to accommodate her,"
He held out the package for Lan, to which she opened the envelope with a blank face.
It was a loan statement. Claiming that her mother had taken out a loan of 10,000 verats from Baron Lindbergh with an interest of 10% per month.
With the loan gaining 1,000 verats in interest every month, it was a ridiculously large loan. With 3,000 verats, she could replace all of the duchy's knights' equipment with state of the art equipment and have money left over.
'Should I say it's a good thing I’ve only ever borrowed a few verats?'
Indeed, it would be difficult for Lindbergh to pay more than 10,000 verats. Given the baron's gross income being set at about 15,000 verats a year. For now, the verat was rarely used as a currency unless it was spent between nobility, the average citizen still participated in bartering.
'A 10,000-Verat necklace.'
Lan tried to recall her mother's colorful jeweled accessories for one that would fit.
'It’s almost like the Marie Antoinette ‘Affair of the Diamond Necklace’ case.'
Her reputation had been tarnished by the scandal regardless of the fact that she was found innocent and hadn’t purchased the necklace.
"According to this loan statement, the default for this payment is later this year."
"Yes, but your mother was in that accident…", the baron drawled on with an exaggerated pout.
"This was a lot of money for me too. That's why I'm informing you in case you were unaware."
He covered his mouth after letting out a dry cough, barely masking his grin.
"But as you're my niece. I'm thinking I can exempt you from this burdensome debt."
"Exempt me?"
Lan looked at him curiously. Baron Lindbergh fiddled with his mustache organizing his thoughts.
"I want to be a real family with you."
"We're already blood relatives."
Not wanting to say family, Lan chose a different word. But the baron, who didn't notice the distance, said with a smile.
"I want you to marry my son."
‘Oh, my God.’
Swallowing a breath, Lan nearly choked. "Son? Are you referring to my cousin Robbie?"
‘I knew him, we had met several times. He was known for flaunting his "masculinity", lusting after women, and gambling for sport!’
In other words, by Lan's standard, he was the human being equivalent to garbage.
'I guess gamblings not working out for him...'
"Yes, as you know, the age difference between the two of you is only about four or five years. It's the perfect time to settle down."
‘Dear lord, he’s serious.’
Lan couldn’t let her disgust show, not yet.
It wasn’t the time to be making enemies. She had only just risen to the position of duchess and patriarch. Perhaps once the duchy’s finances and affairs were in order, she could take the risk of distancing herself from the baron.
Although she had secured her position with the authority of the Azure ring, there were bound to be groups who were dissatisfied with her becoming the temporary patriarch to the duchy.
Baron Lindbergh had a vast network of connections across the continent, he was not someone you should cross.
'Well, that didn’t just apply to the baron.'
What's fortunate is that she could identify and hire trustworthy individuals thanks to her background knowledge as the original author.
'It’s a relief she remembered so much.'
Lan smiled shyly and squeaked back, "Uncle, thank you so much for your advice. However,
marriage....it’s so sudden. Besides, it’s"
Lan scratched her cheek.
"It's kind of like getting married because of...d-debt" she stuttered out in a high feminine voice. Baron Lindbergh upon hearing this took it as a clueless response.
"But it's 10,000 verats. Are you aware of how much money that is? Besides, the duchy has other debts that you should focus on. This isn’t something you can handle on your own."
Lindbergh leaned forward.
"You'll need the guidance of a wiser man."
"Like yourself, uncle?”
"That's right."
Lindbergh nodded his head, wondering if he had finally reached her.
Lan looked at the pile of documents upon her desk.
‘I still have a lot of work to do.’
She turned her gaze back to him and replied with a dazzling smile.
"That's just what I wanted to hear."
—
"Are you asleep?"
When asked by Sir Ross, Lan replied with a vague, "Yes…”
Realizing that she was not listening to him, he approached the desk and put his hand over the documents she was reviewing.
Only then did Lan look at him, "Sir Ross?"
"It's quite late, shouldn’t you turn in?"
"Just a little bit more."
"Why don't you finish this up in the morning?"
"Fine."
Lan rubbed her weary eyes as they were blinded by the candle light. Shutting them tightly she avoided facing the candelabra.
Ross watched Lan pull herself together.
When Baron Lindbergh had visited to speak with her, he had truly wanted to cut him down.
When did they establish a secretive relationship? He didn’t recall this information.
'However.'
She had reiterated the discussion topics to him once the baron had left. Though he didn’t believe it, of course. She had to be attempting to build trust in order to double-cross him.
'I have a plan for our meetings going forward.'
—
"Next time, when my uncle and I talk alone, you may enter this room and listen in."
Lan had led him to an adjacent room connected to the duke’s office and pointed to a stove pipe attached to the shared wall.
"You will be able to hear clearly if you open the flue.”
"Couldn’t you just secretly write or share notes with him?"
At Ross's words, Lan blinked and stretched her shoulders.
"Well, sure that's a possibility but I don't intend to do that."
"Why are you going so far?"
"Hmm, has this been counterproductive? I wanted to build trust between us."
"Trust?"
"Yes, your trust is worth the effort to me." Lan continued on thoughtfully.
Shrugging her shoulders. "I wonder… when Eustaph comes back after graduating from the academy, will it be easier then?"
This was Eustaph’s last semester at the academy. He was set to graduate after winter, and return to the mansion in the spring.
“Couldn’t we build trust by working alongside each other?”
Sir Ross didn't reply to Lan's words.
His master’s thoughts belonged to him alone. Joining the military and becoming a knight didn’t allow one to understand and speak for their liege.
—
Lan pulled herself from the chair and took one last glance at the documents.
"I’ll take your advice and retire for the night."
Sir Ross lowered his eyes and remained silent.
Back in her room, Lan was readied for bed by a maid who assisted in changing her clothes.
Naturally, she would have been moved to the late duchess’s quarters, but she had refused to be moved to that room and told staff she was only in the position temporarily anyway.
As she laid down in the familiar bed, sleep quickly overtook her.

The Viridescent Crown Chapter 2
Lan checked her appearance once more in the mirror.
Her black mourning attire made her face appear paler than it was. Lan slid the lace veiled down with her gloved hand as a sheer web-like veil covered her half of her face.
'With this they won’t be able to see my expressions.'
Standing at the door of the conference room, Lan organized her thoughts one last time. The meeting would begin soon, and the agenda would focus on deciding the next head of the family.
'I can do this.'
She needed to be confident if she was to oust her uncle from taking control of the duchy and become the patriarch herself. She had to do this.
She needed to procedure the Azure ‘Blue Flame’ ring.
'Of course she wasn’t a hundred percent sure this plan would work.’
In this world, the spirits possessed sacred names. Spirits, like humans, had their own names which were kept secret. This is because knowing a spirit's name allowed one to control them and their powers.
But she was the original author so it was natural that she knew the name of Blue Flame. All she had to do was wear the ring and call the spirits name herself.
‘But it shouldn’t burn me as I will become the current owner of the flame.’
Becoming the owner of the flame also symbolized becoming the patriarch of the Latia family. It was the only way to ensure that no one could raise objections.
'Well, they may find fault in my pedigree but that was a problem for later, I'll just need to keep control long enough to be recognized as the head.'
Perhaps everyone will be surprised and the duchy will be turned upside down however if there was a chance she had to take it.
Lan thought and took a deep breath and lightly placed her hand on the door knob opening the heavy door without a sound.
"I’m sorry for running late"
Lan greeted the conference room lightly, the vassals raised from their seats.
There were three families that served the duke as household courtiers.
The Wild family, the Lance family, and lastly the Illuminati family.
All three family heads were present for this meeting. The duties of the families had changed over the course of the era resulting in their services supporting the duchy rather than acting as consultants to the duke. This meeting remained only in formality.
'In other words, the second and third families were well placed in the knights of the duchy or as pillars of the administrative divisions.'
Among the family heads who served the duchy stood Baron Lindbergh, her uncle.
Originally, he should have been an administrator for the duke, but he was avoiding the oath of loyalty under the pretext of being family.
"We’ve gathered together quite early."
Eustaph calmly stated as he pulled out a chair at the table. Lan nodded cordially to him under the black veil and took a seat.
Then Eustaph sat down, and everyone who had gathered for the meeting took their seats.
Cough
Baron Lindbergh gave a haughty cough to draw the room's attention.
"Why don't we move on to our main order of business? There's only one reason why we're here today."
Some frowned inwardly at his attempts to lead the meeting by being the first to speak, even though Eustaph or Lan had yet to formally address the table.
But Eustaph remained silent and nodded.
"That would be good."
Baron Lindbergh bowed his head with a somber face.
"I am so very heartbroken by the passing of my dear brother, sister in law, and youngest nephew but the duchy continues and we have two heirs remaining."
He coughed again and continued,
“Eustaph is still an underage, so I would like to appoint Lan as the next ducal head."
Baron Lance frowned, "Lady Lan may have inherited the duke's last name, but she is not of the duke's bloodline. How could she inherit the duchy?"
"Oh! It was the duke's will to enter Lan into the family registry!"
Baron Lindbergh raised the authority of the former state.
Baron Lance tried to say something more, but Lan gently raised her hand.
The table became quiet.
She rose from her seat and spoke in a steady voice.
"I’m well aware there may be some who are concerned about my becoming the ducal head and it is true that Eustaph is still underage and unable to inherit the duke's estate."
Lan looked down at Eustaph. His face was difficult to read through the veil.
"So it is for that reason, I'd like to hold a temporary position as the head of the Latia family for two years, that is until Eustaph reaches adulthood."
A temporary patriarch.
There was a slight murmur over the new term.
"As soon as Eustaph becomes an adult, I'll hand over the position of patriarch and duke to him. And if anyone has complaints about my lineage being a problem..."
Lan took a shallow breath and turned to Eustaph.
"May I borrow your ring for a moment?"
A cold silence filled the room.
Eustaph looked up at Lan for a moment and slowly took his necklace off and handed it to her.
Baron Lindbergh looked at the symbol of the duke with hungry eyes.
The Azure 'Blue Flame' ring.
If you can't wear the ring, you can't be a true patriarch of the family. Lan gently removed the ring from the necklace.
The blue jewel seemed to sparkle.
Without hesitation, she tucked the blue ring onto her finger. At that moment, a blue flame engulfed her.
"How can this be?!"
"Oh, my god!"
Some flinched as chills ran down their spines, and some jumped from their seats.
Eustaph, without realizing it, got up and grabbed Lan by her wrist.
‘Istarif, simmer down!' Lan shouted loudly in her heart. The flames that seemed to have swallowed her slithered back into the ring.
Silence filled the hall.
Lan raised her hand so that everyone could see it, feeling her hand shaking in the process.
Upon her finger sat the twinkling Blue Flame. Everyone gazed upon it with a lingering fear.
Eustaph's dark blue eyes shook rapidly.
Everyone seemed to have stopped breathing.
—
"Nonsense!"
It was Baron Lindbergh whose scream echoed through the chamber.
"What doesn't make sense, uncle?" Lan answered calmly.
"That ring, that ring, it can't be worn unless it's of someone of blood relation! You can't use it unless you're the patriarch."
"That's right. You can't use it unless you're the patriarch. So, I think Blue Flame has recognized me as the temporary patriarch of the Latia Duchy. It seems I have been successful in receiving the position of the next duchess"
"Such…." Lindbergh's voice trembled.
With Lan as the patriarch, she was in a position to not be swayed. She could now control as much as she wanted.
Those who may have tried to acquire the duke's power through her hand in marriage had lost the upper hand. As long as she became the owner of the ring, Lan gained the authority not to be controlled by wills of others.
'No, not yet.'
Lindbergh bit his lips.
If the patriarch was a young lady of poor qualifications, there were bound to be issues to state against her and eventually her position could be relinquished, but now there was no room to argue.
Moreover, the duke's debts were piled high. He couldn’t have some little girl learning that he was the one who had introduced the duchy to a loan shark. He had to have her under his control.
Lindbergh chewed his lip and dryly remarked, "That's right. You've been recognized by the Blue Flame spirit."
‘Isn’t she supposed to be on his side anyway?!’
Baron Lindbergh regained his composure. "Is there anyone who disagrees?"
No one raised a complaint.
‘No, I refuse to believe what I saw. Something isn’t right.’
"Then I'll have the finishing statement for this meeting being that Lady Lan shall now be the temporary duchess and patriarch of the Latia family."
Baron Lindbergh’s voice reverberated through the room, everyone collectively breathed out as if they had been released from magic.
Lan’s shoulders lost their previous strength. She pulled the ring from her finger and handed it back to Eustaph.
"You don't have to call me duchess. You don't have to offer me the Blue Flame greeting because I'm only the head temporarily."
Lan assured him before looking back to the room. Everyone was staring back at her with suspicious faces and questioning eyes.
Not all three families will pledge their loyalty.
'The Wilde family head is definitely on Eustaph's side.'
Baron Lance is upstanding in his work to the duke and his trust won’t be given lightly.
'What's left is…'
Lan turned to Count Illuminati.
The count, whose reddish-brown hair looks like that of a lion's mane, was in his early 40s. ‘A mysterious man’, that's how she described him in her novel.
Count Illuminati, the duke's right hand man, was also the closest relative to succession save for Baron Lindbergh. However, he wasn’t a person who would openly covet power like her uncle.
'I wish you could be the strength for Eustaph.'
Lan smiled at him, but the count did not react.
'I'm the original author yet I don't know what they’re thinking.' At the thought, Lan’s smile fell.
"Then let's end the meeting. I'll make time for those of you who want to stay and talk."
Lan closed the meeting with those remarks, yet no one moved from their places. Everyone had something to discuss with her.
She sighed in defeat and said slowly.
"Then let's meet one by one in the back room."
Eustaph stood up from his seat and said, "Come with me."
Lan nodded.
The small room at the back of the conference room was designed for intimate conversation, and was simply decorated with soft colors.
Lan sighed and positioned herself on a creamy sofa before offering him a seat.
"You may sit down."
Eustaph sat down and crossed his legs. Lan’s gaze traveled over him, from his legs to his piercing eyes.
'Male Leads are certainly something'
He was far more handsome than she had imagined, yet he matched her vision of him.
‘I don't know how he can do that.’
"How did you do that?"
"Huh?"
"I mean with the Azure ring."
"Well, I told you. It simply recognized me as the temporary patriarch."
At Lan's words, Eustaph's blue eyes narrowed.
"If that was possible, no one would have died attempting to wear the ring."
"Perhaps it’s because I'm a member of the Latia family too, I was registered, and... I had a hunch."
At Lan's words, Eustaph's movements paused for a moment.
"You could say it was a gamble."
"A gamble where you could have burned to death."
"There seemed to be no other way than that."
By supporting her uncle's plan to have her inherit control, she had prevented him from taking advantage of Eustaph. Even if it was unlike her, it was the only way for her to survive the battle waging within the inner family political sphere.
Eustaph still seemed suspicious, but soon returned to his expressionless face.
"So, what are you going to do now?"
"We'll have to organize a payment plan for the existing debts. The most urgent matter is our current financial situation."
"What is your plan for me?"
"You may go back to the academy and finish graduating."
"If I refuse."
"What do you think I'm gonna do while you’re absent?"
Lan gently smiled and said, "You may leave Sir Ross with me."
"To you?"
"I'm just saying it's alright to monitor me and nothing shall be in vain."
Eustaph studied Lan for a moment. Was this a trick to keep Sir Ross away from him? A reliable knight escort wasn’t easy to come by.
'Of course, the Imperial Academy was protected by magic.'
That's why the duchess wasn’t able to reach him.
"All right." Eustaph agreed. She may have Sir Ross stationed here, and he would have someone else assigned to him.
"But one thing."
"Yes?"
"Why are you doing this?"
Lans smile shook at Eustaph's words.
‘Because I'm sorry for being the cause of your suffering? I can't say that.’
"Because we're family."
This response wasn’t inherently a lie, either. Until Eustaph meets the female lead, with whom he falls in love with and has his happily ever after. She was going to do everything she could to support them.
'And I'm going to have to search for the second male lead.'
Why did she have to put the male lead and second male lead in harm's way? Why was her writing as a middle school sophomore so dark? Lan’s mind was full of regrets.
'But first, let's bring back the light.'
It's not until the later stages of the story that the female lead discovers the Ice Wall mine, but Lan needed to utilize this plot point to acquire the coveted mana stones.
Mana Stones.
There was a great wizard in this world. Well, as you can see from the story of Iveria, the great magician who raised the Ice Wall, forged the doorway, and built the Latia mansion. Wizards were once quite common, so all the continent's lords had one or two wizards in their possession.
However, there were no wizards in the Duchy of Latia’s territory. The reason was simple. This was because the great magician Iveria, banned wizards from entering within the 10 kilometer barrier of the Ice Wall. The ancient rulings of the magician created a silent unbreakable pact that was handed down for generations within the duchy. Eventually the Duke of Latia would be referred to as "wizardless duke” in passing.
However, even the aristocrats without wizards wanted to see the benefits of magic, and thus created a market for magical items. Mana Stones contained enough mana to empower tools and items that worked without the use of an external magic force.
Over time the interest in magical items waned. The purity of the mana stone wasn’t high enough and the tools required a large quantity of stones, so considering the maintenance cost, it was better to hire a wizard.
As a result, the mana stone industry fell into one major category, as the power source for light fixtures. Light fixtures required little power from the mana stone, and the stones sustained their shelf life long enough to be affordable compared to candles. Only the existence of the magic tax has managed to sustain the kingdom's interest in the building of other mana stone items.
'Incidentally the mana stones of the Ice Wall were of the highest purity and plentiful within its caverns'
In short, what was once deemed an impossible market to enter has entered the realm of possibility. It was like bringing coal, or oil, to the harmony fuel market.
'Besides, I am the original author, and can take this a step further.'
The Ice Wall mana stone, which forms in a hexagonal shape just like crystal, is as transparent as ice due to its high purity. The first Ice Crystal found by the female lead was colorless and transparent. However, the mines were rich not only in transparent Ice Crystals but in red and blue mana stones.
These mana stone deposits were the reason why the great magician Iveria kept the wizards away from the ice wall. The mana from these mana stones has a completely different characteristics from the open market mana stones, and these stones deteriorate the internal mana of wizards.
In other words, the moment a wizard comes in contact with an Ice Wall mana stone, they lose the ability to use magic, and if they attempt to combine their mana with the stones, it will become impossible to control. That's why the great magician warned them not to approach the Ice Wall.
'These stones can’t be handled by humans.'
In the magical realm of this world exists the races of dwarves and elves, they were magical species that lived in the western side of the continent.
'In other words, we can create trade relations with people of different races.'
Lan’s smile perked back up at the prospect.
Minerals that could only be handled by the dwarfs or the elves could be traded at considerable prices.
'It was a good business strategy, the north couldn’t start a fast-food business anyway.'
They would secure the fuel industry, and establish a magical tool industry. It certainly wouldn’t be too difficult with their resources.
'But the first step was mining....'
Thinking of it, Lan sighed.
'Where was the mine located again?'
At that time, Eustaph muttered, "Lady Lan."
Bringing her back from her thoughts she chirped, "Hmm? Yes."
"I’ll be leaving now."
"You will return to the academy, right?"
"Well Lady Lan is the patriarch of Latia now."
"It's only temporary."
"May the Blue Flame bless you."
"Don't!"
Frowning, Lan raised her hand in protest.
"That greeting is too much. The Blue flame is yours. Just a normal greeting will suffice."
Lan added, Slowly. "And we are family."
At those words, Eustaph’s gaze fixed on her, "I've never thought of you as my family."
Throb.
It was difficult to hear.
Lans smile faltered, "Ah, is that so?"
Eustaph watched her response with a stoic expression and left the room.
Lan collapsed in her seat.
'Not family.'
At this rate, she could be exiled by Eustaph as soon as he inherits the position as patriarch. Even if that were to happen.
'Do what you feel is right Eus.'
Still, I should create a private savings… Lan thought as she pulled the rope to summon the next person to come in.

The Viridescent Crown Chapter 1
Lan held back her desire to immediately run to Eustaph’s side. Instead, she slowly approached the open grave where the soil fell.
"My Lady…"
Lan shook her head when the man who was filling the burial plot showed reluctance.
"It's alright, you may continue."
After sharing a glance, the men resumed their work. The earth began to quickly cover the smooth casket. Lan stared at it and lost in thought.
Four years.
It had been four years since she fell into this world.
Before she found herself in this world, she was a graduate student in her mid-twenties. She was driving home one weekend when she suddenly crashed. As the shock set in, everything went black.
When she finally awoke she found herself in the wrong world. It took a week to figure out that she had become a character of her own writing.
It was her novel ‘Eternal Love’, which she had written when she was fifteen.
She remembered the contents because of the folder she found on her old computer while organizing at home.
At first, she wondered, "What is this?" but as soon as she opened the file, she knew what it was right away.
Fortunately, she was able to swallow her laughter and read through the text. Thus allowing her to remember the plot as if it had been a play she had once watched.
'But even if I created this world…'
She was the stepmother's daughter who caused great trauma to the male lead.
'How come I was reborn like this?! Besides, this is the backstory, right?'
The one dimensional female lead she wrote for this story met the male lead when he was twenty years old. However Eustaph, was currently seventeen years old.
There were still three years left before the original story begins.
She was reincarnated seven years before the original plot began. At first, it was difficult to figure out what was to come next.
But she soon figured out that Lan should've died.
Lan Romea De Latia.
The daughter her mother ushered in when she remarried the Duke of Latia. Lan didn’t share an ancestry with the Latia family, nor even a drop of blood. In fact, she, the original author, didn't even give her name.
In fact, she didn't even know she had a name until she came here.
Nonetheless, the duke, who was infatuated with his new young wife, was willing to accept Lan, thus allowing her to become part of the Duke's family.
When her mother gave birth to a son, Tass, the harassment of the duke's ex-wife's son, Eustaph, began. Even Lan played a part in Eustaphs mistreatment which remained permissible, well, that was until her death.
‘Originally, I was supposed to be crushed to death by Eustaph, who accidently fell from a tree.'
Which would cause her mother to fall into madness and begin abusing Eustaph. The tutor who was assigned to Eustaph was also cruel to him which led to his eventual aversion to women.
'But here I am.'
As she came into this body, Lan was brought back to life. When she had acquired her bearings. She earnestly asked her mother, who trembled with anger, to send Eustaph away to the Imperial Academy.
Her mother praised her for thinking of such a clever scheme and was wholly in favor of keeping him away.
'When in fact, I just wanted to keep Eustaph away from that tutor.'
Eustaph seemed to think for a while after hearing the news and there was plenty of backlash from his attendants, but eventually he left for the Imperial Academy.
'I'm sure you also wanted to escape from your tutor's clutches, Eustaph.'
Lan nodded inwardly.
‘I thought I had remedied the situation and behaved fairly, I really did…'
Eventually, both of their parents and Tass died in a carriage accident.
‘I knew this would happen, but I couldn't stop it.’
They were on their way to see Eustaph in the capital city, where the Imperial Academy's festival was being held, and Lan asked her parents.
“Let's go to see Eustaph together!”
She subsequently took ill, and suffered from a high fever which led her to losing consciousness. Her parents and younger brother, who couldn’t overlook the long preparations, left without her and ended up meeting their fate at the bottom of a landslide.
There were no survivors.
'This wasn’t how it was supposed to go…'
From what she could recall from her novel, the male lead’s family perished as a result of a shipwreck.
‘So, I thought all I had to do was avoid the boat. But it wasn't…’
Lan wrapped her hands around her face.
It was only four years, yet she had been here for four years. They weren’t her real family, but they treated her well despite her ‘lost’ memory.
"Lady Lan."
Lan raised her head at the sound of a low voice.
There stood Eustaph, her younger brother, who was two years younger than her. He had already come to stand beside her.
"You're not feeling well, let's head inside."
His cold face was lightly creased with worry.
Lan looked at him for a moment and nodded. As she turned around and her gaze fixed on the faraway mansion nestled within the landscape.
In most areas of the Duchy, it was easy to see the duke's mansions at the foot of the mountain range. The huge mansion, which stood tall against the backdrop of the near endless sea of mountain peaks. They had a majesty which couldn’t be crafted by human hands but by a great magicians.
The huge mountains which towered behind the mansion were known as the Ice Wall, this wall being what gave the Duke of Latia the name "Latia of Ice Wall". Upon the mountains stood the beautiful white doors which were sealed by Iveria, the great wise man.
The Latia family acted as the guardians of this gate. They were a family that was older than the Empire itself. As the continents were engulfed in war over the ages, and the king and his descendants changed with the times, the family continued to exist here.
'And, of course, it's because this land is barren.'
Lan let out a small sigh.
The Duchy of Latia was barren. Though the land was wide, more than half of the year was spent in an arctic winter. As a result their subjects couldn't farm properly, and there was little land where crops could grow. This caused the Duke's finances to remain tight.
'Now we're on the verge of collapse.'
It was a direct result of her mother's luxurious lifestyle.
—
‘Please allow me the greeting’
There is a greeting passed from generation to generation to the Duchess of the Latia family.
‘May the viridescence protect you’
This greeting originating from the Viridescent Crown. The Viridescent Crown was a tiara worn by the Duchess of Latia.
In the Duchy, where winter lasts half a year, the color green is regarded as a noble color. Furthermore, the greeting was paired with the tiara, which also acted as a blessing that everything would bloom once more.
It was no surprise that the tiara of such renown had been fashioned out of platinum and adorned with the finest emeralds that gleamed in various shades of deep green.
The greenery itself was a blessing that shone in the emeralds, the duchess’s grace and goodwill was also spread to the people through her greeting.
‘May the viridescence protect you’
This greeting and tiara were of much importance, yet my mother detested the crown.
Instead, she commissioned a new crown. A crown made of rubies and sapphires, it was created along with a corresponding necklace. She continued to purchase extravagant rings, dresses, earrings, bracelets, belts and so forth until her closets overflowed with riches.
And as I said, 'Duke's finances were always tight.'
The previous duke had to prepare for the long winters, but his wife had spent his money for a life of grandeur. It was natural to have debts.
'Besides, his successor, Eustaph, was still a minor.'
Lan glanced at her brother walking beside her. His black hair contrasted dramatically with his dark blue eyes. His distinct appearance left a lasting impression.
'He’s certainly a male lead.'
However, since he was the male lead, he had to suffer a great deal of hardship.
'For now, only the harassment of a cruel stepmother and tutor.'
The next event in his life was about to take place.
Baron Lindbergh.
After his parents' death, his uncle would temporarily inherit control of the duchy as Eustaph was still underage, but he reigned the duchy as if he were the duke and absorbed the duke's property into his own.
The baron eventually would gain the title of earl and force Eustaph to marry his daughter to solidify his control of the duchy. In due course, Earl Lindbergh decided to assassinate him but failed in his attempt as Eustaph managed to survive with the help of his loyal knights.
'But he dies…' Lan thought to herself as she looked at the knight who followed one pace away, his own gaze chasing her every movement.
'You, you're totally glaring.'
If looks could kill, he would have already shot Lan dead.
Ross Wild.
He is a person who will die as he lived.
'I have to stop that from happening.' Lan thought before breaking the silence.
"Eustaph." she called him in a quiet voice.
"Yes, Lady Lan."
Lan felt perturbed whenever he called her 'Lady Lan' so politely.
'I don't hate being called Lady Lan, but…' There was that subtle feeling.
"I'm on your side."
Eustaph didn't stop or respond to what she said.
"I want you to know that."
Whether he registered what she said did or not, Lan continued to talk.
There wasn’t much time left until the carriages arrived.
"I suspect our uncle is planning to make me the next ducal candidate."
For the first time, Eustaph's steps slowed down. Lan grinned and glanced back at him.
"I'm going to become the next patriarch."
"And?"
Lan's smile deepened after his subsequent question.
"I won't let him lay a finger on the duchy. And when you come of age, I will return everything to you." Lan stated matter of factly.
The two arrived at the carriage, and prepared to part. They would ride in separate carriages back to the mansion. To not share a coach solidified the fact that a distance remained between them
She bowed slightly, whispered her farewells to her younger step-brother.
"May the blue flame bless you."
It was a greeting said solely to the head of the Latia family.
Eustaph didn't bat an eyelash before he replied in a low voice.
"May the flame be blessed."
—
Eustaph massaged his temple lightly.
"What did that fox have to say?"
When his knight prodded him for answers, Eustaph replied in a hushed tone.
"She said she’s on my side."
"So, what would be the meaning of that…?" Ross harshelly clicked his tongue.
"That's what she said? She herself?"
"Correct."
"She’s worse than a fox."
"Is that so?"
"That's right."
Ross frowned and tried to say something more, but Eustaph was lost in thought.
Lan Romea De Latia.
Of course, he hadn’t forgotten her bullying from when they were young but when he had fallen from that tree. Something has changed and since that incident she had regularly sent him letters and pocket money. She was also the only family member to visit him at the academy.
'I thought she was trying to appease me as the next Duke of Latia.'
Just as her mother had possessed his father with her beauty, that's how she would inevitably attempt to charm him. She possessed features that amazed one's senses; glittering soft, milky hair, dark green eyes like a tree in summer. She reminded him of ripe fruits and sunlight, which were rare this far north.
Gazing out the window he fiddled with the ring that hung around his neck.
It was the Azure ring, the symbol of duke. This ring, which was sealed with the Spirit of the Blue Flame, had the power set anyone who was not the patriarch ablaze. The person wearing the ring had the ability to borrow the power of the spirit and is the reason for the greeting to the patriarch.
‘May the Blue Flame bless you.’
‘That was the reason…’
"But Ross, I'm still underage. I'm not old enough to succeed to the position of duke."
"It's an emergency, isn't it?"
"Yes, but what if my uncle insists on regency?"
Ross scrunched his face in displeasure over those words.
"That raccoon?"
"I could see him salivating at the mouth. That's probably why he approached Lady Lan earlier."
That's what Lan herself said. Swallowing back his words, Eustaph recalled her again.
'What should I do?'
"There are too few options."
Eustaph admitted, smiling bitterly and releasing his hand that was clasping the ring.
"I think it's best to separate Lady Lan from my uncle."
Ross nodded in approval.
"I think that would be the best."

The Viridescent Crown Chapter 5
The Imperial Academy
As the name implies, the Imperial Academy is a prestigious institution founded by the Empire. Following the example set by the royal family, whose heirs were traditionally educated at the academy, the aristocracy sent their own children to attend school there.
This allowed students from noble families to gain notoriety from having an alma mater of great renown and create strong connections with their peers.
Originally, only the Duchy of Latia withheld from sending their children to the institute.
However, Eustaph, became the first of the Latia family to be enrolled at the academy, this attracted the attention of his fellow students.
There were three dukes of the empire.
Ice Wall’s Latia Duchy, White Silver’s Miro Duchy, and Rose’s Usla Duchy.
Among the duchies in the Empire, the Latia family was thought to be the most infamous and isolated. This led to the creation of myths and stories regarding the duchy and its past.
But when the duchy was situated on the land where the great magician fell asleep, encircled by the mighty Ice Wall, and in a place where monsters roamed, were fantastical tales truly necessary?
The Latia Duchy were the guardians of the doorway and had been guarding the territory for longer than the empire’s recorded history.
For the nobles who valued tradition and pedigree, the Latia family was considered special.
The founders of the empire sought to acquire the blood of Latia, in their efforts the first empress of the Empire was a princess of Latia descent.
With their greatness came a unique greeting bestowed upon the family heads.
However, Eustaph was not interested in such formalities. He was annoyed to be on the receiving end of the greeting, "May the blue flame bless you."
It was a greeting reserved for the Duke of Latia, a greeting that forced his hand into speaking coldly with a contemptuous face in order to receive the bare minimum of respect.
With the privileges of the three duchies, Eustaph was provided a private room for his studies in his final year at the academy. Taking a moment to relax, Eustaph sifted through his letters and opened an envelope.
It was a letter from Lan.
Since he began attending the academy, she had sent at least one letter a week.
They were standard letters. She used to give light hearted updates on the happenings of the mansion but since becoming the temporary patriarch her letters read more as reports. This letter addressed the issues regarding her uncle, the state of the Duchal debts, the current financial situation.
‘I'm so tired of this complaining of hers.’
Eustaph continued to read the letter without noticing the smile growing on his face.
Before long he had reached the final sentence: 'Quickly graduate and help me.'
'Really.'
Is she really trying to acknowledge and establish him as the Patriarch?
Eustaph spread the pages across his desk with his fingertips, as if this would help him find the truth in her words.
His stepmother was a great beauty. He had never seen such vivid green eyes and golden hair.
And the new sister, who stood sheepishly behind her skirt, had soft, milky hair unlike anything he'd seen in the North, and her summery green eyes flickered up to his.
Though he held some hopeful expectations, the disappointment he felt was even greater, and his disappointment soon developed into despair.
'That day.'
The day he climbed the tree and fell on top of Lan.
That day was the turning point.
As Lan laid unconscious her breathing stopped. She died and returned to life as a completely different person.
“Eustaph, I want to be your real family.” She whispered with a friendly smile.
Eustaph closed his eyes, and reached out to the next letter.
The second was Ross's letter. Ross had been meticulously reporting Lan's movements in his reports on the duchy.
'Caves?'
What's in there?
This was not mentioned in Lan's letter.
‘Besides, how does she know about that cave? What could be inside there that could help them pay off their tremendous debt?'
Questions kept rising like lumps in his throat. Eustaph reached for his inkwell and without hesitation, he sealed his questions in writing.
The receiver of this letter would be none other than Lan.
—
Accountant Rudd's execution was handled quickly. His crimes were documented, and his hearing was transcribed and posted throughout the estate. Some employees and vassals were pleased that the Patriarch's first punishment was the death penalty and that it was the first step toward cutting out corruption that had festered within the estate, while others turned pale with fear.
There were complaints filed against the Patriarch's decision of the use of the death penalty stating it was excessive and cruel.
Lan ignored it all.
Unfortunately, the confiscated sums that were siphoned from the estate to accountant Rudd’s treasury were unsubstational.
"What the hell did you use all the money for?'
Lan groaned as she scanned accountant Rudd’s family financial reports. She knew it was spent on gambling, but she didn't know it was to this extent.
Most of the duchy's accountants were disciplined and fired. With this turn over the administrative affairs financial reports finally balanced out, but the administrators were too nervous to meet with the new head.
Everyone knew that Patriarch was the most overworked right now. Her study was the last to extinguish the lights, and the first to be lit.
So, Sir Blaine, who returned, was surprised to see the brightly lit office of the Patriarch and the darkened eye bags of the new head.
"Are you feeling alright?" the words left his mouth without his realizing.
Lan grinned and nodded.
"I'm not dead yet, so I’m fine. I heard your scouting mission paid off Sir Blaine."
"Yes, we found the cave. And I found what you mentioned..."
He carefully placed a basket onto her desk. Lan excitingly opened the lid. There was a mana stone as large as the head knights forearm nestled within the basket.
"Our jewel smith stated it's not a jewel. They were unsure what type of crystal it was." Sir Blaine added as he watched her face brighten.
"That is true, this isn’t a jewel. This is a Mana Stone."
"A Mana Stone?! This bulky thing?"
Lan smirked up at the surprised knight.
"This transparency, this hardness. This is what a high-purity mana stone looks like."
Blaine blinked his eyes. He had seen magic items and magic stones a few times in his life. However, the mana stones appeared to be dull stone-like objects.
Lan traced the Mana Stone’s crystal-like points lightly with her fingertips.
"It isn’t difficult to make magic items themselves, and the price for such items aren’t too high. Except those Mana Stones hold little mana, so their practical use is limited."
There was a separate magic tax that was applied to magical items, not magicians. It was inexpensive comparatively, and the use of a wizard for the creation of magical items was quite costly.
Even if you weren’t a wizard, you could create magical items with a magic circle. The price for magical labor was fairly low this way.
"But when these mana stones enter the market, they'll be completely different compared to what's currently available."
There is no limit to what can be done with a Magic Circle.
Sir Blaine nodded at Lady Lan's murmur. "You would be correct."
"I wasn’t expecting you to complete your mission so fast. Thank you Sir Blaine."
"It was no problem, my lady." Sir Blaine answered politely, lowering his eyes.
"Alright, now then..." Lan beamed as she polished the stone with her hand.
"Let's find a client."
Lan's mind was spinning. She may have been the author of this world but there were quite a few world building aspects that were not disclosed in the main story.
She had to go straight for the top.
The continent's most powerful institutions within the open market.
'If I were to create a deal with one of them, the Golden Rose would be the best option.’
Lan took a deep breath and looked up. "Sir Blaine, may I ask you one more question?"
"You need not ask. You may order me however you see fit."
His polite response eased Lan’s worries. She picked up a quill and drew a picture on some loose paper.
"Have you ever seen a tree with leaves like this before?"
Sir Blaine examined her illustration and nodded in agreement with Sir Ross.
"I know it well. It's a common tree of the north."
"As I thought."
Lan turned her attention to the window for a moment. Fern frost still framed the glass panes.
"No… it's still not the season, let's save this conversation for a later time." she muttered lost in thought.
Lan folded the paper and continued, "Good job Sir Blaine. Go rest, you have earned it."
Sir Blaine saluted and left the study. Lan sat down. Sir Ross looked at the Mana Stone on the table and asked. "How did you know?"
"Hmm?"
"That mana stones would be inside the cave."
"I wasn't sure either."
Sir Ross looked back at Lady Lan with wonder.
Lan wanted her story to fit in nicely and be believable.
"I thought there might be a reason why wizards couldn’t come here."
"You came to that conclusion on that alone? Besides, it doesn't matter if it's a wizard or a magic box." Ross questioned further, dumbfounded by her response.
Lan nodded and added "Do you remember when I went to the door? When I disappeared."
This was before she took possession of Lan; she had gotten lost when she went to see the door when she was young. Her late mother began abusing Eustaph around this time as a form of punishment for ‘losing her daughter on purpose.’
"I recall." Sir Ross's face hardened at the memory.
That day, his young master was beaten, and Eustaf's back was covered in bloody lashes. Even now, there is still a scar across his back.
"That's when I found a cavern of crystals. I later thought that if I combined my childhood memories with the information I had gathered on the region's magical history, I could draw a plausible conclusion as to why wizards were barred from entering the North."
Lan smiled awkwardly and shrugged her shoulders. "To put it simply, I was just lucky."
Sir Ross didn't answer.
‘I was just lucky’. She might say that, but it's not easy to come to that conclusion by consolidating that fragmented data into one possible outcome. Even if it was a ridiculous conclusion like this, Lady Lan was able to derive an answer with barely any information.
'Transparent Mana Stone.'
Even those who didn't know much about the market for mana stones could tell that the value would be enormous. With this, the duchy could resolve its debts.
"Why didn't you inform the duchy sooner?"
"It would be too embarrassing to be wrong."
"...."
Judging the look in Sir Ross's eyes, Lan smiled again and continued, "Now that I know for sure, I'm going to write to Eustaph and the Golden Rose."
"The Golden Rose?"
"Yes, one of the continent's top three institutes. Don't you think it’ll be easier to enter the mana stone market with their assistance?"
Having a high value product was like winning a lottery.
Furthermore, subsequently trading red and blue mana stones that resided deeper within the cave system required an established group that was well connected to the western end of the continent. Due to the lack of mana in the common mana stone, it would now be possible to do numerous previously unthinkable projects with our duchy's high-purity mana stones. The prospects for the future were limitless.
'Besides, the Ice Wall is the only place where these high-purity mana stones naturally occur.'
In other words, this situation would be as profitable as oil money. A grin spread across her face.
With this, Eustaph's hardship will be over. And it is also the end that the Female Lead who came from moving to the dimension rolled because of a poor Duchy.
Female Lead.
Lan suddenly remembered the word again. The heroine's name is Ishina. Sina.
She was a lovely heroine.
'I've been working hard yet...' thinking about it made her feel sorry.
'This time, I'll make you a good friend Sina.'
And Eustaph and Sina will live happily ever after.
'Of course, there are some problems that money can’t solve, but having money doesn't cause problems.'
That alone seems to solve half of the problem standing in their way. When the mana stone business becomes more secure she could focus her efforts on finding the second male lead…'
He must have been enslaved by now. But the timing isn’t right yet. She had to find him before the next year passed. If he's trafficked to the illegal fighting arena next year, he will descend to another level of hell incomparable to his current situation.’
‘Thankfully the male lead is safe for now.’
Lan bit her lips.
Two years.
‘If I can just hold out for the next two years, Eustaph will take his position as the Patriarch and head of the Latia Duchy.’
'And Eustaph will be graduating in half a year anyway.'
Her position as the temporary Patriarch was just that of a scarecrow, keeping pests away till his return.
'If that happens soon...' Lan mulled over the details and reviewed the letter once again. There appeared to be no grammatical errors.
'Oh, right.'
Lan quickly added a post script to her letter to Eustaph.
‘Recruit some talented people!’
—
At the end of the letter, Eustaph tilted his head.
'Talented.'
The Imperial Academy was certainly a place for forming connections. Most of the academy's students were aristocrats, but the emperor also allowed commoners to enter the academy a hundred years ago in order to balance power with the aristocratic society.
If a person passed the entry exam, the huge admission fee would be waived for those without a title. And the majority of graduates found employment at the lower levels of the Imperial Palace’s offices.
Eustaph patted the desk lightly pushing himself back in his chair.
'I have met a few characters with potential.'
But the problem was he was tired of socializing at the Academy.
‘I'm saying we can do this in earnest.'
He had carefully observed his peers' achievements at the Academy over the years but never pursued the notion of recruiting them.
This was because his late father, the head of the duchy, was still alive, and doing such a thing in itself would provide leverage for his late stepmother’s faction.
"Look, my dear, you're alive and well, and your son is already preparing to become the duke. It’s obvious that he's planning something. You can trust Lan; she should become the Patriarch.”
'Well if it’s an order from the Patriarch, it should be alright.' Eustaph thought so and carefully folded the letter.
When he had read through the details of the duke's debt, he felt the numbers suffocate him. No matter how much he thought about it, he couldn't have paid back the debt with the profits from the Duchy alone.
'But.'
Mana Stones…
Eustaph caressed the azure ring. It had a cool surface, it never seemed to retain heat from his touch. Eustaph liked that aspect of it.
“You really made the right choice.” He whispered to the azure ring, placing it to his lips.

The Viridescent Crown Chapter 3
The week-long funeral came to a close, and it was the day that Eustaph began his journey back to the Imperial Academy in the capital.
Lan knew very well that once he left the duchy, he would begin monitoring her every move through his intelligence network.
'Sir Ross.'
Lan took a deep breath as she watched him whisper something in earnest to Eustaph.
Once Ross stepped away from Eustaph, she was finally able to approach him.
"Have a safe trip."
"Yes, I wish you all the best."
Lan peered at the blue ring on his neck and smiled up at Eustaph again.
"With your grades, it wouldn’t be surprising if you were named valedictorian."
It was a remark weighted with expectations, but he answered without hesitation.
"If that is what you wish."
"Is that so, you would do it just because I asked?" Lan questioned him.
Eustaph let out a laugh and stepped into the carriage.
Lan stepped back, and the coachmen politely closed the carriage door. The carriage driver lightly lifted his hat to Lan before parting and whistled for the horses to move.
The horse began to trot up the road, and the carriage quickly disappeared from sight. It was not until he was completely over the horizon that Lan let out a sigh.
She turned around to address the knight. "Sir Ross."
"Yes."
Hazel-colored eyes looked straight at Lan as if they had something to say.
"While Eustaph is away at the academy, I would like you to be my escort."
Ross looked down at Lan without responding, he had already been informed of this arrangement when he spoke to Eustaph earlier.
"Very well."
Lan let out one last sigh.
"Well then, let's get to work."
—
'I'm dying.'
When Lan had asked the butler to bring all the accounting forms for the duchy, Lan was eager to work.
'But this was beyond expectation.'
The situation was far worse than she had previously thought. The duchy’s debts had been bought out by a private lender.
‘Just who is responsible for this?’
The Duchy of Latia was spacious and had plenty of undeveloped land. But there's no way the duke would have mortgaged out the only granary in the duchy’s possession.
‘If we don't have access to grain for the winter, we'll all starve. I'm starving…'
Of course, the repayment period was still about half a year away, but interest was due at the beginning of every month.
Moreover, the finances were all negative. Minus. Zip. Zero.
Having the books in the negative meant that there were currently no available funds to respond to, and that a lump sum of money would be necessary for the initial down payments for starting a large scale mining project, even if it was a visionary concept that would bring in profits, it was difficult to secure the funds to finance it.
'Should we sell off some of the mining rights?'
First of all we need to find the mine.
Baron Lindbergh was still residing in the mansion and as soon as Eustaph left for the academy, he wanted to arrange a meeting with her.
'Originally she had rejected his offer as she had work to do, but now…'
Lan drummed a quill against her forehead.
The duchy was a large operation, it was only logical that many workers would be employed to assist in operating it. There were four main branches of employment within the duchy.
The duke's mansion which was managed by the butler, the head maid, and a plethora of servants.
The duke’s administration cabinet focused on the governing aspects of the territory. The estate affairs officer oversaw the province.
The armed forces, which included the duchy's soldiers and knights, were led by the knight commander.
Leaving the accounting in the hands of the trash accounting officer. The one responsible for pocketing the duchy’s funds.
'Why did I write the accountant to be like this? What was I thinking!?'
Well, figuring that out was the easy part.
What's most important was finding a solution to stop the duchy’s inevitable collapse. Fortunately, everyone besides the accountant were deeply loyal to the duchy.
'Especially the knight commander.'
Lan turned to Sir Ross. The knight commander was his eldest brother.
"Sir Ross."
"Yes."
"Could you summon the affairs officer and the knight commander for me?"
At Lan's command, Ross left without complaint to call for the two men before returning to the office.
"What are you planning to do?'
"The duchy’s accounts are in terrible shape."
"Well you see the duchess was extravagant."
"I agree."
Lan nodded at Sir Ross’s pointed remark that her mother was the one at fault. Though her extravagance had been an issue.
"The problem is that selling such jewelry wouldn’t turn a profit. It's expensive-"
He stopped himself, allowing Lan a chance to speak..
"How much do you know of the financial situation?"
"I know it's tight."
"It's not tight enough."
Lan knocked on a bundle of papers upon the desk.
"It appears that our accountant has been deceiving us. Well, we weren't the ones looking into the accounting books."
If their accountants could borrow money, write up a proposal for funds, or if they could accept private loans this situation would be different. She personally didn’t see the issue in private loan practices but this wasn’t the aristocratic way of thinking.
"I'm worried as…we have a crisis on our hands."
Ross's expression hardened slightly at her words.
"Why would an accountant dare deceive the duchy?"
“A fair point." Lan replied with a bitter smile.
That was a confining way of thinking, but she couldn’t say that. Who couldn’t understand the temptation of money, even at the expense of their boss? But this was the north, and they were incredibly honor-conscious and this remark would be seen as a slight.
People who are as attractive as rare beasts would disappear without a good protective shield. (( I have no idea where this came from or what she meant by it…))
Lan smiled, Eustaph was an excellent shield in this case.
Sir Ross frowned at her relaxed expression, then there was a knock on the door.
Knock knock.
Pushing the chair back slightly, Lan spoke clearly. "You may enter."
The administrator opened the door and entered the office, she was a neatly dressed woman perhaps in her mid forties. Beside her was the knight commander, a man of his early thirties adorned in armor.
"I greet the duchess."
Ms.Elizabeth, the administrator, greeted first, followed by Sir Blaine, the knight commander.
Lan was relieved that the pair had refrained from addressing her with the formal greeting for the patriarch of Latia.
"You may both have a seat."
Ms.Elizabeth and Sir Blaine shared a glance. They had met at the door, but neither of them knew why they had been summoned by the new duchess.
'Of course, it's not like I don't have a clue.'
Elizabeth looked at the young duchess in front of her. Lady Lan had worn the Azure ring. She had witnessed the Blue Flames' acceptance of her, having not even singed her within its fires.
‘I don't know what's going on, but Lady Lan has proven herself to be the rightful holder of the ring.’
Lady Lan had said several times that she was only the temporary patriarch of Latia, but what if this was a ploy to lower their guards before securing her power? She had summoned them as soon as she ascended to the throne, examined the accounting books, and called the administrator and the knight commander to her office.
'These were not the actions of an ordinary lady of nineteen years.'
Elizabeth thought so and gently averted her gaze when her eyes met Lans.
"I’m sure you’re both wondering why I summoned you here, to put it bluntly..."
Lan flicked her finger against the pile of documents.
"The duke's debts where they stand now are enormous."
"Oh my, how much is it?" Ms.Elizabeth enquired.
Lan smiled bitterly and said. "If I told you that I would have to sell my estate and my title, could you guess how much it is?"
A gasp was heard from the three people gathered in the office, but Ms.Elizabeth quickly protested.
"That can't be! I checked the accounting books. Of course our funds were stretched thin, but there were-"
"It was fraudulent accounting."
"Fraudulent accounting?"
Blaine asked, as it was a term he was unfamiliar with.
Lan waved her hand as she spoke, "In short, it was theft. For example…"
Lan thought for a moment and gave the simplest example.
"You don't purchase something, but you write down that you did."
Lan opened a document and handed it to Sir Blaine.
"Last year, 3,000 verats were paid for new equipment for the duchies' military."
Blaine's grasp crumpled the documents. The document stated in clear print that a payment of 3,000 verats was made. Without realizing it, he shouted.
"No way!"
It was money that he had never received, not one cent. On the contrary, he had made a long list of requests for replacements for the knights' tattered equipment, but he never received funds.
"I thought so. Besides, if you look at the purchases lower on the list, you'll notice a large portion of the budget was spent on horses, but we don’t have much of a cavalry, do we?"
Elizabeth's face turned pale.
"There must be something similar going on in the administration cabinet."
"Luckily Ms.Elizabeth had kept a separate record of the administration cabinet's funding requests. Thanks to you, it was easy to compare the data. However..."
Lans expression dulled.
“In my review of the financial statements, I discovered that Mr.Bunuch accounting books were consistently accompanied by embezzlement, malpractice and fraud."
‘We haven’t invested in any stock, yet it says we bought it. I lack the background in business to fully grasp the concepts, though I don’t have a choice in the matter. The situation won’t resolve itself.’
"But duchess, why do you believe we are innocent of this crime?"
In response to Ms. Elizabeth’s words, Lan looked up from her documents and pointed to her eyes.
"My eyes weren’t closed the entire time I lived here."
Elizabeth shut her mouth. It was strange to admit that Lady Lan had observed the situation and made a calculated choice of her own volition, but it was far more bizarre that she had believed in their innocence so firmly.
‘Though, I don’t dislike that she chose to trust me.’
"Besides, I'm going to fire the accountant, " Lan announced, tracing her thumb across her throat.
"However, this doesn’t mean that the debt will be forgiven with his termination. We have six months to repay our current debts, but we have to decide whether to pay in monthly installments or lump sum payments."
Sir Blaine’s jaw tightened.
"Then what are you planning to do?"
When asked by him, Lan looked up for a moment and mulled over the question, "For now, we need to arrest the accountant, investigate and confiscate his property, but before we make our move I need you to do something for me."
"Please tell us."
"I'd like you to search the northern mountains."
"The Ice wall?"
Sir Blaine’s face seemed to say, in this situation? Lan’s smile widened, "Correct, first I–"
Lan quickly scoured her memories for the location of the mine. After the female lead arrived at the territory, she discovered it while wandering through the mountain range, so it shouldn’t be that far from the Ice Walls doorway.
"I want you to search around the door for a cave."
"Near the door?” Sir Blaine's forehead furrowed.
"Yes, I wish I could come with you." Lan replied, stretching her shoulders.
'The Door'
It was the source of the story and the beginning of the Latia family.
Iveria, the great magician, created three entities before sealing away the darkness. The Ice Wall Door, at the center of the mountain range. The Sky Castle that was built for the Latia family at the base of the mountains, and lastly the Doorkeeper. So, the doorway was a symbol of fear and awe in the north.
Of course, the Blue Knights, the Knights of the Duke of Latia, were positioned closest to the gate, but I wouldn’t dare request that they investigate near the door itself.
"But!"
"Please do a thorough investigation. I have a secret plan for that cave that could potentially save the Latia duchy."
"Is that so…" Sir Blaine answered without much concern.
"All right, I'll assemble a team."
"I'll leave it up to you; all I ask is that those who are assigned remain silent about whatever they uncover within the cave."
At Lan's words, Sir Blaine shot a quizzical look at her and before bowing his head.
"I'll keep that in mind."
"Thank you."
As the discussion finished up, Lan dismissed Sir Blaine to return to his duties, to which he politely excused himself and left the office. She then turned her attention to Ms.Elizabeth.
"As of now, I don’t need you to gather evidence. The documents themselves are already full of evidence. However, you have kept a record of the administration cabinet's finances for years, so there shouldn’t be a problem in comparing the reports. Though, I'm sure it will be difficult to sift through."
"Do you want me to review the accounting books?"
Lan smiled at Ms.Elizabeth's quick deduction.
Elizabeth looked over the documents on the desk once more, "Please have everything sent to my room."
"That can be arranged."
Elizabeth excused herself and Lan summoned a servant to move the accounting books to Miss. Elizabeth's office, Lan’s work was far from done.
'I’m tired.'
Sneaking a peak at Sir Ross, Lan could see he didn’t wish to remain by her side.
Lifting a single finger and she spoke softly, "May I have a cup of tea?"
Sir Ross left for the hall to call over a maid to ready refreshments.
Lan pressed her forehead against the palms of her hands and waited for the tea to be brewed.
'I'm so tired…'
The numbers from the financial reports seemed to buzz through her mind imposing themselves wherever she looked. The maid quietly poured the tea into a tea cup.
Sir Ross waited for the maid to leave the study before asking, "Did you send him on purpose?"
