I felt like drawing these two, in appreciation of Eleanor Audley's lasting impact, but also because they're such impressive and effective villains in their own right.

UNNECESSARY AND UNHINGED RANT ABOUT CINDERELLA'S CHARACTER FROM CINDERELLA (2015) INCOMING
Lemme talk about Cinderella from Cinderella (2015) for a bit actually yeah because these changes to my girl completely baffle me
She has friends now
Goes outside on her own
Says the only reason why she's staying is because it's her parent's house- bruh.
All of this takes away (+ more reasons down the cut) from the true cruelty of OG!Cinderella's backstory and how it all connects so well to inform you of her character and the actions she takes
OG!Cinderella has been indoctrinated into accepting her life as a maid to her step family since she was a small child. She is never seen going outside of the house besides the night at the ball. The only friends she had were random animals around her she couldn't even fully converse with. She had no other human perspective on her situation or how to get out of it. It makes sense why she's just taking her stepmother's tyranny while holding everything in because this isolation and neglect is all she knows. This is the entire limited scope of her world. A sad reality to many cases of abuse in real life.
And they just. Erased all of this for some. Reason???
The night at the ball was a big deal because she literally NEVER gets to go out. This is the only time she interacts with the outside world aside from the ending. The impact of that was HUGE in the original movie. The new one just cheapened that imo by implying she goes out in town and talks to others regularly. This event was an impossible, fantastical dream come true to someone who is never treated as anything but a servant to everyone she knows.
Basically OG!Cinderella has it way worse which is what makes the ball such a huge deal in the first place.
Third point I don't think I need to explain how Cinderella staying in her abusive home bc the house is "hers to love now that her parents are dead" is not a good character change and doesn't make sense. I would understand if her dad was alive and insisting on staying, but he is GONE. It is a building you grew up in sure, but that's all it is. Not something you sacrifice your wellbeing for. So that's a shit reason they didn't need to make up to say why this character is stuck in her abusive household. The isolation and years of gaslighting were enough. (Also showing how much of a frightening presence and manipulative villain Lady Tremaine is.)
And she sure left it quick after getting hitched lol
The Fairy Godmother having the audacity to test Cinderella with that "oh I'm a poor old woman and I want some milk please" nonsense
Not very godmotherly of her in this version. 馃ゴ The Fairy Godmother appeared in the original to offer pure comfort to Cinderella in a time of desperate need, when this resilient and kind spirit finally reached her breaking point. The dress, slippers, pumpkin carriage, and magic were all given freely as a present to make her feel better at least for one night.
Meanwhile this goofy ass Godmother has the audacity to be like "hey is she gonna be nice or not even though she's crying in tattered, recently destroyed clothing- I need to see that or else she doesn't get the magic juice". Like why did this become a way to test her morality all of a sudden? Why did you need something from her to give up the magic goods?? It's not even a good test she just walked a couple steps and poured some milk in a bowl,,,
Idk man they made their relationship transactional for no reason which taints the original purpose of this scene imo. The original Fairy Godmother already KNEW Cinderella was kind without having to make sure by disguising herself as a rancid old lady. 馃槶 Weird and unnecessary addition.
Kinda nitpicky here but this film did not at all match the terror of the torn dress scene which really shows you how horrifying and humiliating it was to Cinderella
Comparison
AND THE BIGGEST OFFENDER: THE WAY SHE "ESCAPED".
I NEED TO TAKE A BREATH
BECAUSE LIKE. WHAT WAS THAT.
Original Cinderella, seeing a real chance of escape from her abuse, uses everything in her possession to do so. She's yelling for the mice to get the key, to get Bruno to chase away the cat, running down to meet the prince's attendants to make sure they get the proof of her identity from her- and that moment she oh-so-casually pulled out the second slipper??? SEEING HER STEPMOTHER'S SLACKED JAW??? GAGGED US ALL.
ICONIC
But 2015. Bitch. What is going on. She gets locked up and easily accepts her doom. She just twirls and sings in her prison like a dunce because cINDerELLa wAs aLReADy cONTenT wIth her sMaLL mOMEnts oF hAPPIneSs anD dREamS wItH thE pRinCE.
Just. Gives up.
Not the mice begging her to get up and save herself come on now
The mice have to do their best on their own to push open her window so the prince and his crew hear her on time.
And yeah, all she had to do was open a window.
WHAT. WHY. HOW. WAS THIS??? MORE EMPOWERING???
1950: use your brain to fight to the very end
2015: quit while you're still ahead, or don't try you just gotta dance and sing all pretty then someone will come along and save you
I'm sorry, but for a production that was so critical of the notion of "Cinderella just waited around for a prince to save her"...is that not literally what they changed the ending to?
You wanna talk about lack of agency in princess stories well here you go 馃槶
You know what's sad about all this in the end is this is still the best recent live action Disney remake imo LOL
Anyways hello if you've made it all the way down here I rest my case
#disney#cinderella#cinderella 2015#sidrabbles#rant#i like 1950s lady tremain more but i dont dislike this more sympathetic and character driven take on her either#feels different but not bad#prince is 10000x better no complaints from me#but the bar wasn't that high in the first place so congrats i guess??? We all know the designs in Disney's Cinderella are iconic, but what if some iconic concept designs made it into the final film?
These are my first attempts at making screencap edits, taking inspiration from the 1940s-50s Golden Book of Walt Disney's Cinderella, with artwork by Disney's first credited female animator, Retta Scott Worcester. Her artwork is often mistaken for that of Mary Blair (one of Disney's most celebrated artists, who also worked on Cinderella and a handful of other movies), which makes sense, as their art styles are pretty similar. I have vague memories of having the book when I was little, and I've always been charmed and mesmerized by the artwork and the fact that the characters and their costumes looked so notably different from those in the Cinderella we got. Cinderella's ball gown and yellow party dress are especially so lovely, and I paid homage to them by including them in my Cinderella KiSS doll/dress up game, and Lady Tremaine's dress, accompanied by a mile-long pearl necklace and the key to Cinderella's room hanging from a rope wound around her midsection, is pretty sick. I also have always been fascinated by ideas of what could have been, for anything, really. So, I sat down and decided to play around with Krita, and these are the results! I actually started these roughly a year ago, when I was just getting started in digital art, and they had been sitting dormant in my files while I paid more attention to other projects, and I just now got around to finishing them.
I originally wanted to do the stepsisters too, but I was 1.) unsure of which outfits they were shown wearing in the book to draw for them, and 2.) a little apprehensive and unsure about the amount of detail to include in them, as there seemed too many to include in a traditionally animated film of the time.

Who is the worst parent?
NOTE: Both of the gifs I chose specifically because they are from each character's respective movie scenes of being terrible parents to their respective child (for Frollo, looking at disapproval and anger at Quasimodo and not helping during his torment; for Lady Tremaine it was after tricking her two other daughters into destroying Cinderella's dress).

@star-ocean-peahen I hope you're ready because I have MORE because I watched Cinderella for the first time in 20 years because of this post!
Cinderella was so friggin sassy! She wasn't a necessarily a doormat who was oblivious to how she was being treated; she would say things like, "alright, alright," and called Lucifer, "your majesty" and even when she tried to say, "even Lucifer has redeeming qualities," you can tell that she's only doing it to make things less tense between Lucifer, Bruno, and herself.
When Gus is found under Anastasia's tea cup, she tries to defend herself to Lady Tremaine (more on her later) explaining that this wasn't a practical joke like they all thought and it was a simple accident, and trying to explain that she had washed the drapes the day before when Lady Tremaine tells her to wash them again. This is all before the ball.
Now for the ball, the king-whom I must add has a much better character in the sequels, especially Twist in Time, wants grandkids. The Prince has been away and this is all impromptu because the king is literally having a crisis because he wants to hear the pitter patter of little feet in the castle again. In itself this is wholesome but once Prince starts dancing with Cinderella at the ball, he tells the grand duke that if this doesn't work out, his head is literally on the chopping block! He literally does the thumb to his neck thing. Again, more on this later.
So let's rewind a little bit to the invitation:
It isn't specifically said that it's to find a bride but it's heavily implied, since "by royal decree all eligible maidens are required to attend." Of course Anastasia and Drizella but two-and-two together (surprisingly in my opinion), and sure Cinderella did too but she more-so just wanted to go dancing. She'd been cooped up in the house that is falling apart, as stated in the beginning narration, and just wants to get pretty and have fun. Of course Lady Tremaine does anything in her power to keep her from going, but here's something that a lot of people miss and it has bothered me for years:
Cinderella didn't ask the mice and birds for help; they did it on their own accord because Cinderella had helped them all. She was going to fix her mother's dress up herself but Lady Tremaine and her daughters piled on chores for her so she didn't have time, resulting in her anticipating not going only to be surprised when she finds the dress completed for her.
Of course we all know the infamous scene where her stepsisters ruin the dress because it has garments that they were going to throw out anyway, but they're meant to be spoiled brats who just want Cinderella to suffer. I mean hey, it's better than the original and the Vietnamese version.
This is the part that Cinderella loses hope! They have broken her! She has given up on her dreams until Fairy Godmother bibity-bobity-boos her to the ball, and as stated in the original post she explains that all dreams must come to an end and nothing lasts forever. OP explained this in their original post so scroll up for that explanation.
Which now we come to my original statement:
Cinderella didn't know she was dancing with the prince. She just assumed some random gentleman came up to her and asked her to dance. When she loses track of time, she runs and the grand duke orders her to be chased after, and she loses her shoe. She goes to get it, but she doesn't have time. It's all a literal accident. The Prince doesn't know her name, the grand duke only has a shoe, and the kind being as thick headed as he is literally threatens the grand duke to find her and try the shoe on every maiden, by royal decree.
We have all, including Disney themselves, been misremembering Walt's original telling of Cinderella. Cinderella wasn't waiting for someone to save her; she did try-to some degree-save herself. She was sassy, kind, gentle, and tried to be understanding to everyone. In the beginning of the movie, she says, "they can't stop me from dreaming."
Now, my theory as to why she's always so nice to Lady Tremaine and her daughters besides the obvious if she doesn't she'd be homeless is because her father loved them. Her father wanted Cinderella to have a mother figure, which is why her remarried to Lady Tremaine. She only showed her true colors after husband's passing, and even then according to the narration it wasn't like a flip of a switch. This was gradual. Additionally, Lady Tremaine should be in the tower because she went against royal decree, but that's just my onion and it has many layers.
Of course though, Cinderella eventually gets her happily ever after, and based on the sequels she's been happy ever since and she and Anastasia have a pretty good relationship. However this wasn't Walt's vision and if you take those away Anastasia is still just as bratty as her sister.
After watching Cinderella (the original animated movie, which was my favorite as a child), it strikes me how it solves many common problems people have with this fairy tale. Like:
Why did they try to identify the mystery girl using her shoe size? Because the bullheaded king's only clue to her identity was the shoe the Grand Duke picked up off the steps.
Why didn't the prince recognize her by her face? Because his father wouldn't involve him in the process at all, and wasn't the one going around trying to find her.
Why did the prince want to marry a lady he only met that night? Because his father was going to force him to marry someone, and he genuinely liked this woman.
Why did Cinderella want to marry a man she only met that night? Because marriage was her best and most secure way to freedom. Fucked up, but you can't say it's unrealistic for the setting of a fairy tale. She also genuinely liked him.
If they're using the slipper to find her, wouldn't it be more sensible to search for the person with the other slipper? Yes. The King is purposefully nonsensical and the Duke is purposefully terrified enough of him to carry out his orders to the letter. Furthermore, they end up doing that in the end anyway, because the Duke's glass slipper is shattered, and Cinderella brings out the one she has to prove her identity.
Why didn't the stepmother and stepsisters recognize Cinderella at the ball? Because they were dancing too far away, and then left the party to dance in private, which was possible because the King wanted very badly for his son to hit it off with someone and tried to arrange the best conditions for that to happen.
Why didn't Cinderella save herself? Because in real life, abuse victims should not have to shoulder that responsibility, and usually can't. In real life, you need and deserve an external support system. Asking for help, in this kind of situation, is very important. She is saved by others because she is loved. Because she is not alone. Because she has friends who love her, and want her to be happy and safe and free. Because in real life, people who want to help someone who is suffering are like the mice. We can't pull out miracle solutions, but we can provide companionship and if we're in the right place at the right time, we can help the person find a better life.
Why didn't the fairy godmother save Cinderella from her abusive household, or try to help her sooner? Because she's magic, and magic can't solve your problems. Quote: "Like all dreams, well, I'm afraid it can't last forever." This (and Cinderella's dream of going to the ball) is a metaphor for pleasurable things in bad circumstances. An ice cream won't get rid of your depression, but it will provide you with momentary happiness to bolster you, as well as the reminder that happiness in general is still possible for you. Cinderella doesn't want to go to the ball so she can get away from her stepmother and stepsisters, or so she can meet someone to marry and leave with. She wants to go to the ball to remind herself that she can still have things she wants. That her desires matter. This is important because the movie does a very good job of illustrating Lady Tremaine's subtle abuse tactics, all of which invisibly press the message that Cinderella doesn't matter. While going to the ball and fulfilling her dreams may not be a victory in the material sense, it is still a victory against Lady Tremaine's efforts.
Why is Cinderella's choice to be kind and obedient framed as a good thing, when you are not obligated to be kind to your abuser? This one walks a very fine line, but I think the movie still makes it make sense. Lady Tremaine never acknowledges her cruelty. She always frames her punishments of Cinderella as Cinderella's fault. Cinderella is interrupting, Cinderella is shirking her duties, Cinderella is playing vicious practical jokes. Cinderella is still a member of the family, of course she can go to the ball, provided she meet these impossible conditions. Lady Tremaine's tactics are designed to make Cinderella feel like she must always be in the wrong and her stepmother must always be in the right. If Cinderella calls her stepmother out on her cruelty, or attempts to fight back, Lady Tremaine can frame that as Cinderella being ungrateful, cruel, broken, evil, etc. If Cinderella responds to her stepmother's cruelty defiantly (in the way she's justified to), she's not taking control out of Lady Tremaine's hands. Disobedience can be spun back into her stepmother's control. She wants Cinderella to be angry and sad and show how much she's hurting. So since Cinderella is adapting to her situation, she chooses to be kind. Not only because she naturally wants to be and it's part of her personality, but because it is a form of defiance in its own way, and it allows her to keep a reminder of her agency and value. Her choice to be kind is her chance to keep her own narrative alive: she is not obeying because her stepmother wants her to and she has to do what her stepmother does, but because she wants to. It's a small distinction, but one that makes all the difference in terms of keeping her hope and identity. (Fuck, I wrote a whole paragraph about how this doesn't mean you can't be angry at people who hurt you or that you need to be kind to deserve help, and then deleted it by accident. Uh. Try again.) Expressing anger and pain is an important part of regaining autonomy and healing. Although it is commendable to be kind while you are suffering, it is NOT required for you to get help or be worthy of help. If Cinderella's recovery was explored beyond "happily ever after" she would need to let herself be angry and sad to heal. Cinderella is not only kind because it comes naturally to her, but because it's her defense against the abuse she's suffering. Everyone's story and experiences are different, and one does not invalidate the other.
Bonus round for answers that aren't part of the movie:
Why didn't Cinderella run away? Where would she go? Genuinely, in hundreds-of-years-ago France, where would she go if she snuck out of the window with a change of clothes? With her step-family, she's miserable and abused, but she's fed, clothed, and in no danger of dying or being taken advantage of by anyone other than her stepmother and stepsisters. Even if she escapes and manages to find financial security, her stepmother might be able to find her and get her back.
Why didn't Cinderella burn the house down with them inside it/slit their throats in the night/poison their food/etc.? Because that's a revenge fantasy, and this story is a fantasy about being saved. There's nothing wrong with making Cinderella into a revenge fantasy. That's perfectly fine, as long as you acknowledge that the other type of fantasy is also a valid interpretation. (I mean, the original fairy tale features the stepsisters getting their feet mutilated and all three of them getting their eyes pecked out, so go for it.)
Why isn't Cinderella more proactive in general? Because she's a child who has been abused for the back half of her life, who has had to be focused on survival because. you know. she's an abused kid.
How did she dance in glass slippers? Gotta agree with you there man, that's weird.
