Marie and Edgar = Chaos.

Short story stuffs

The kids somehow listening to Mordecai’s crazy demands. Edgar and Marie hugs both of Mordecai's legs. Mordecai: “Why are you hugging my-” Marie and Edgar: “To make it even and symmetrical for you!” Mordecai: “…” His tail moves pleased. "Don't you dare to betray me now.” Talks under his own breath to his own tail. The kids stares at their father and then at each other. Halina: “You're just happy they're paying attention to your symmetrical demands.” sips her tea. Mordecai: Looks at her with that typical grumpy stare.

Marie being a bit of a grump in the morning. Marie: Stares at her plate that is filled with her breakfast. “............. where's the pankies mama?” Halina: “Your father did the breakfast this time honey.” Marie: “but... where is my pankies?...” she pouts with her ears going down.  Edgar: He silently watches but nods. Halina: Glances at Mordecai. Marie: ”I want mah dada shapes!” Mordecai: “Dada is twaddle.” Marie: Starts crying. Halina: Glares at Mordecai. Marie and Edgar find a stained shirt of their father’s, it’s covered in red stains. Marie: “Papa must like tomatoes a lot..” Edgar: “Or paint.” Halina: “hmmhm. Yeah. It could be either or.. maybe both.” Tries to take the shirt away from their paws. “Let mama do her work now, please.”

The kids first shots. The nurse: “It will only pinch a lil~ aaaaand done! Good job~” Hears a thud and looks behind herself, seeing Mordecai on the floor. “u-uh- sir?” Halina: “He doesn't like needles.” Helps him up. Edgar: Scared to death now. Looking at his father with wide eyes. Marie: Gets a lollipop, being all happy.

Things this child takes home. Marie: “Papa! Look!” Puts something up that she got so she could show him. Mordecai: “Yes?...” looks down from his book to look at her tiny paws. Marie: Shows him a spider she caught. Minutes later… Halina: “Honey, remember, don't show your father bugs like that, you know how it makes him feel.” Pets her head. Marie: “okii mama…” Halina: Looks up to the ceiling, “You can come down now..” Mordecai: Still stuck in the ceiling.

When Marie needed glasses. Halina: Noticing Marie squinting a lot. “Marie, what's wrong?” Goes down to her daughter to see what’s happening. Marie: “Blurryyyyyy” Halina: Looks over at Mordecai. “I think she needs glasses, could you help with that kochany?” Mordecai: “Hmmm... Perhaps.” He gets closer, sitting next to his daughter on the floor, helping to test out if it is long-sightedness or short-sightedness. Before giving her his pince-nez to see if that helps to determine it better. Marie: Stops squinting. “burrrrr!” Halina: “Better now kochanie?” Both she and Mordecai sitting on opposite sides of Marie, seeing her looking around. Marie: “HMHM!!” Nods happily. Mordecai: “That settles it then.” Pets Marie's head lightly. “She has to get her own pair of glasses in the near future.” Some days later. Marie has to go with Mordecai to get her own glasses, and Mordecai really has to remember to be a dad and hold her hand while they walk, and not make her cry or grab whatever she finds interesting off the pavement. Him ending up perhaps getting a bit closer to his daughter, or rewarding her for being good the entire day.

They have to learn. Halina: Goes down to Marie. "Now remember honey.. don't run over to your dad with his back turned. Understood?" Having a finger up so Marie is paying attention to her. Marie: "Ok!~" Halina: "Good." Minutes later when Mordecai comes back home from work. Marie: "PAPAAA!!~" Dashing face first into Mordecai's legs and hugging them tightly. Mordecai: "GAH!!!" Halina: “why do I even bother…” Facepalms. Edgar: Covers his face.

A bookish and reserved man, Gideon doesn't dislike talking to people, but he certainly struggles with it. He's anxious, easily flustered and prone to nervous sweats. But he's a very kind man with an affinity for math and botanicals.

Gideon has a few... Struggles in everyday life, ones his mother tries to assist with, but generally pushes too hard on. He has a high reliance on routine and order. He suffers from texture and taste sensitivities (he hates crunchy things, sour things and spicy things) and prefers baggy clothes due to intense tactile sensitivities, also avoiding uncomfortably tight or clingy fabrics altogether.

Despite Gideon's difficulties, he has a strong advocate in his sister, Esther. A no-nonsense and feisty personality, Esther will mercilessly tease her brother - it is her right, as his little sister, she says - but should anyone else mess with Gideon, heads will roll in short order. Even mother is not safe from her wrath when it comes to protecting Gideon's gentle nature.

With Gideon's differences compared to his canon counterpart, his family life is also quite different. His mother finds Gideon to be too soft; she and Isaac often argue regarding nature versus nurture in regard to his eccentricities, as well as Esther's near indomitable spirit. These arguments never resolve and soon after Mordecai turns eleven, they part ways, with Esther and Gideon ending up with their father in St Louis.

Isaac ends up as bookkeeper for the Little Daisy, getting his children jobs in the cafe when they're old enough. Once the Lackadaisy Speakeasy opens however, Esther is soon drawn into the underground world of bootlegging, torture, murder and everything in between. (Mostly torture - she had a lot of repressed anger about the divorce.)

Gideon is far more content to continue working the books or the cafe with his father until Isaac's health declines too far and he is forced to retire. It's then Gideon learns the true nature of the Little Daisy Cafe - as well as the existence of Lackadaisy in the caves below - and he...

Well, he freaks out a little.

Good thing Esther is there to slap some sense into him.

I’ve wanted to make Isaac and Zipporah fan art for so long! Tracy said in a Patreon stream that Mordecai’s parents met in school so I wanted to draw them young, maybe about to get engaged. I just think about Zippy having to watch Isaac deteriorate and pass away! Ugh, feelin’ the shrimp emotions kind of night for me.

Isaac and the setting are based on the pictures in mini comic ‘Critique’. I tried really hard to research German culture but I think I may have a bit of a clash, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t quite sure what part of Germany Mordecai’s parents hailed from. If you like detailed Lackadaisy lore like me, I highly recommend checking Tracy’s patreon out if you haven’t already. The livestreams are wonderful and you learn so much about the lore!

Baccano! vs. Lackadaisy

As stories set near the end of the roaring 20s full of gangsters, bootlegging, silliness, and spectacular violence, the two invite comparison.. specifically, comparison of Halloween costumes!

Lackadaisy’s are of course more more historically grounded:

while Baccano! has a certain gusto that Isaac and Miria bring to everything (which definitely comes through better in the animation):

Also bonus points for the killer opening soundtrack! I didn’t really see enough of Baccano! to compare the two but this specific parallel really amuses me. I will guess that if you like one of these you’ll probably like the other.

Tantz Aerine (Without Moonlight)

I really like Chekhov from The Second Crimean War. He's such a powerhouse of fight and wit and yet 99% of the time he's a calm, mild mannered pacifist that prefers to talk things out. Love him. ahh I really enjoy The Second Crimean War (weird phrase lol)! I think Bekir is my fav secondary character, he's cute and I feel like I spend a lot of time worrying about whether or not he's going to end up ok!!

also gotta give a shoutout to Kat from Gunnerkrigg Court, she's one of my favorite "best friend characters" of all time and I LOVE the complicated morality that her skill at robotics get her into. Also she's a great example of well-written queer characters in YA, which I always want more of. Electric Zebra from Super Galaxy Knights Deluxe R http://sgkdr.thecomicseries.com/comics/ because he believes in the power of love and music. Also because he's a general who somehow also dislikes the government so that makes him a fun character for me. Honestly hard for me to pick cause most of my favorite comics are ensemble casts so it's hard to categorize them as side characters.

chalcara [Nyx+Nyssa]

Zeetha and Bang from Girl Genius. I'm fond of murderous ladies it appears. Zeetha's one of the most interesting mentor character's I've ever seen, plus her arc didn't end in death. And Bang's Bang.

shadowhood (SunnyxRain)

-Mordecai Heller from Lackadaisy. He's a very straightlaced assassin...but there's something about seeing him freak out and make so many hilarious out of character expressions that gets me. Also that he's so important to the plot that when i find myself explaining Lackadaisy to people...I always mention him.

-Heath and Olive from Gourmet Hound. Heath is serious and it's very admirable to see him try so hard to overcome his mom's fame in the baking industry. As someone who wants to be a pastry chef one day I can relate a bit to his journey on becoming one. But what got me was how he has legitimate concerns and fears about being betrayed by a friend. The way his issue was portrayed instory...made him feel much more real and human for me. Being tired of waiting for a friend who left him, being betrayed....it struck a chord with me

Olive was also very relateable, because she portrays a side of culinary individuals that I don't think many people see as much. The fear of something wrong going in the kitchen, the pressure and stress involved is not something to discount. I've seen many of my classmates (myself included!) in chef school break down and have to calm down in the walk in freezer due to the stress involved. Leehama chose a good character to show this issue, because Olive is essentially someone who has to hold in her issues and pretend everything is fine. Of course.....that will backfire horribly, and I loved seeing the ramifications of that in a kitchen setting, particularly with someone whose motivations are relateable and likeable.

Like my favorite f/o type seems to be these big, scary men who are actually quite softy inside! That description already fits with Ushio, Isaac and Masaoka! Not to mention I’ve been reading Lackadaisy all day and I really like Viktor  who - you guessed it - is big and scary but allows Ivy touch him no problemo.

Another type fits Michelangelo,Nero,Javier and Ratchet like a glove: the good hearted jokesters that can kick ass just god
