Take notes. Adolf Hitler was elected, too. I have been screaming for years that it is us and we are it. Take a good look into the mirror, America. Unless you can get away with putting Republican children in cages, you're toast. There will be more whining and weeping. Too little, too late. Your government is done. NATO is done. Ukraine is done. Now, it's going after birth control. The it who never wears a condom is telling us to go drink bleach. This is exactly who Americans are. Backward. Mean. Frightened. Bitter. Unskilled. Uneducated. Poor. Sick. Filled with hate and revenge. Our institutions failed us again and again. Where are the people who also took an oath to protect and defend the constitution. What have they done. They voted for it. In my heart, I know that it's not human. It's an it. Americans love pornography. They can't get enough of it. It is a pornography. In fact, life itself is a pornography. It is not a homo sapiens sapiens. It has reduced us to being accessories to a pornography that has no basic understanding of how the world works. It's not just America. It's humanity. Again. We are him. We thrive on abomination, contempt, revulsion, malice, scorn, bile, and venom. We are not good people. We are the animals we pretend we are not. We are deluded. We merit what it has to throw at us. Putin will be allowed to employ thermonuclear holocaust. I do not want to hear the Putin speech in the White House. The Nazis have won. There is only one option. Run.

can anyone explain to me at what point rose tyler was "unbelievably stupid". was it when she was inventing transdimensional travel
#what about her makes you think she's stupid. answer quickly#the whole POINT of the rtd companions - yes all of them - is that any ordinary person can shine when given the chance to#and when someone believes in them.#even besides that there is no point before during or after rose's time on the show when she is shown to be stupid.#she doesn't have like. the doctor's vast universal knowledge sure#but the point is that she's smarter than him in other ways! they balance each other out which is why they're such a good team#like the london eye scene in the very first episode for example.#that is aaaaall about how the doctor misses very simple things and needs someone with him who doesn't#all the best companions have a moment like this. thinking about when bill realizes the mother-son thing in knock knock#anyway. i'm ranting sorry. this post just really pissed me off#imagine missing the point so completely#and being so classist that you can't comprehend that dropping out of school is not a symbol of lack of intelligence#rose tyler#doctor who#delia.txt

A protection that becomes more creepy
Azul in my heart. You can see the original art here and read the monster list here @lustlovehart
[Alt under the cut]
My first concept, since my style could not simulate the texture of slime in its purest state
It is quite thick so water can not enter or wet. Only small puddles where you can accumulate
It is a monster and that, magic, but I can imagine that it can only reach a height by the pressure, it can come out expelled sometimes
#When I read that I had some kind of armor so it did not expand everywhere#I imagine it’s some kind of spell that must carry with you to stay a little more solid#It would also be interesting that to have shape must have a skeleton. As any construction with cement. Found this and clean it#it lacks some parts but otherwise is a good structure#It’s fun to think that your vision distorts by the drastic change in size so you should wear lenses#I wonder what function their hearts will have if there is no blood for two of them#He would be perfect to experiment scientifically#I thought two hearts set in the head until you see the original art#it would be funny that you try to kill him in the chest but only become a little silly#twisted wonderland#twst#fanart#digitalart#drawing#monster boy#creature design#azul ashengrotto#twst azul#honneydraws ⊹⃬۫🍜̸᩠໋࣪꣹۫

thinking about how that solavellan ending actually Works for lavellans who want that hopeful ending but arent as forgiving abt the whole situation as veilguard presented it. and i do think in ashara's case, yes, she goes with him out of love, but more so out of duty. post trespasser she drops the name lavellan in favor of her family name, dhavise, since her place in the clan had already been cast into question and her allegiances with the chantry/solas are cause for doubt as to whether she's even welcome back anymore. but i think by the end of veilguard she's reaffirmed her identity as Lavellan no matter what, and truly does see herself as the Keeper of not just her own clan but of her whole modern people, and with that rekindled purpose she chooses to watch over them all by way of watching over fen'harel. protecting them by protecting him from himself. which ironically is the reason the dalish HAVE keepers in the first place
#oc: ashara#datv spoilers#datv#tay plays datv#sorry but we're doing solavellan tag essays again i fear#i am so :))))) abt lavellan's capacity to be for solas EXACTLY what varric was for rook in that prison#a guide. a reminder. an anchor. a hope.#started from the bottom (''fen'harel ma ghilana'') now we're here ("ar ghilana fen'harel'') !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#anyway the way i imagine the prison situation is that its exactly like any other place in the fade. changeable depending on emotion#and interpretation and point of view.#i think regret is so powerful as a prison lock bc anyone who believes themselves to be a god lacks the self awareness to even FEEL regret#so it WORKED for the evanuris. but it didnt work for rook because they arent a god and facing regret IS possible for them! and then like#the solas ending where he says “i am a GOD” Guarantees he cant escape bc hes PAST that point. the neutral ending leaves it open to anything#but the redemption ending is the one where he most clearly reaffirms that he is NOT a god and so the capacity for him to impact the walls#by facing its nature and by extension his OWN nature is... hopeful :) so i think its probably gonna look like it did in the game for a whil#but it will heal as he does :) im picturing a little house where everything seems a little bit brighter day by day#and when regret creeps back in and the fade reflects that then lavellan is there to fix it. and fix it again. and again and again if needed#until it finally DOES look like the way that end mural presented it. dare i say the black city goldened ...........

The tragedy that is the Barnes family, who had to watch their only son and his best friend both leave marching towards a war that would eventually claim them, who died without ever knowing they would be alive and reunited in the far future, who died believing they would meet Bucky again yet never did...
And also the tragedy of Bucky and Steve never getting to see their family again, who have to live with the knowledge that they're still alive while Winifred or George or Becca aren't, whose last memory of them is a painful goodbye and broken promises...
Not to mention how Sarah Rogers never was more than a footnote in Captain America's story, when she probably worked so hard just to keep Steve alive and happy, who is only remembered by two (broken, lonely, sad) people, who never got to see the good her son would do...
#man.#it's about the family never back together it's about the lack of knowledge it's about the misplaced guilt etc etc etc#like imagine being any of them. it's just way too much#them standing around two empty graves not even knowing where their corpses were#like jesus fucking christ#stucky#adjacent ig#steve rogers#bucky barnes#barnes family#? how to even tag#anyways sorry I've been in a depressing stucky kick lately

As someone who had their feminist and leftist awakening here on tumblr in the early 10s, I have to say that the way online leftism has evolved is really directly correlated- in my opinion - to the rampant antisemitism, lack of critical thinking and reading skills, and straight up support for terrorists that I see across platforms.
I do not regret the way that this site helped me think about certain topics and pov’s for the first time, but the way the internet exists now is very different than even then, and it’s been a change for the worse.
I now, with a more fully formed brain, can even see how some of the things being parroted to me on here at the time were one dimensional takes with no room for nuance or questioning without being labeled a bigot of some kind.
I never thought I’d be thankful for growing up in a very republican town (and family), but now I see that having deeply known a pov so different from mine helps me be even more informed of my own ideas and WHY I believe them. And I also see all humans as nuanced beings with different priorities. Doesn’t mean I like them, but understanding them is so important.
The complete dehumanization of those you refuse to try to understand or listen to and the subsequent infantilization of those you are insistent on supporting…it’s giving no critical thinking skills and a complete lack of moral clarity.
Being from NY, I can’t help but have looked at the “protests” on oct 7 here on the streets, with banners in favor of the very terrorist organizations (or adjacent) who killed my friend’s parents on 9/11, and feel an even deeper kind of sadness and disgust.
If you support people who support terrorists, you support terrorists. If you support people who are ok marching alongside swastikas and hezbollah flags, you have been morally corrupted. If you genuinely feel the greatest evil on this planet is a democratic nation made of mostly Jews the size of NJ that is resisting against Islamic imperialism, you are an antisemite. If you think the Palestinians deserve leadership like Hamas…you must hate them.
Imagine supporting people who are making lists of Jewish practitioners to avoid. Imagine thinking you have the moral high ground when your “side” are the ones mourning a terrorist’s elimination but praising someone committing suicide.
Idk what it will take for some people to wake up, but I fear it will be something so horrific, and it won’t be until it affects them.
#for the record I hate war and do not love or support all decisions made#but it just could not be more clear about the mindset the left HERE in the US has#just a total lack of even wanting to understand#it’s performative activism to the next level#aka moral narcissism#jumblr#imagine if advocating for Palestinians involved being against the terrorist orgs that have been forcing them to live in squalor for decades#and killing them and violating their basic human rights#and denying them of any kind of freedom under their laws!#imagine…

hey oz i saw ur friendly reminder from the monster streamer post.. i'm real sorry that happened to you. hope you're doing okay. you're my favorite blog btw so pls know that there are folks like me who love and appreciate you !!
Thank you for the kind words anon, and don’t worry, I wouldn’t say I’m too devastated.
I initially just wanted to laugh it off, because I’m an easygoing person and I don’t like causing drama. But then I thought, “you know what? It’s ok to be upset about it”.
It was someone who followed me, and a fellow writer (!) on top of everything. They rewrote my post less than a week after I posted it myself. Replicated it in great detail, yet somehow, only the author escaped their memory. Which is plausible. Except within the same day, someone left them a link to my post. They acknowledged it, then continued to leave their post unaltered as “unknown originator”. In my mind, the polite thing to do would’ve been to at least mention “hey, in the meantime I found the source from which I copy-pasted and thought of continuing without permission”. Alas. Perhaps my Internet etiquette is outdated.
This was an exceptional case, and it does not reflect the people on this blog. I’ve removed the friendly warning, because it kind of ruins the humor I intended for the story. I just wanted to vent a little, I suppose, especially because it was not purely my work, but an idea given by one of my anons. So I felt like our open dialogue and idea exchange was somehow tampered with.
My apologies for the unexpected gossip.
#personal#I also find it to be such an insidious method of stealing content even if it's unintentional#because if you know you've seen an idea here already why would you rewrite it yourself instead of finding it and reblogging it?#if you liked it so much you'd share it with others#and I'm not lacking recognition by any means but I imagine this kind of conduct is probably used on smaller blogs too which is even worse

Saiouma Puella Magi AU, but Kokichi takes Madoka's role and Shuichi takes Homura's.
For one, Kokichi's too naturally distrustful to just hear "I can grant you any wish :)" and not think ok where's the hook. So he just does what no one ever has & essentially interrogates Kyubey, so he knows it all even before he gets to make a contract. So, some of his classmstes are MGs & he won't become one himself BUT he still ends up tagging along to just protect them in his Kokichi ways. (Though I'm entertaining Kokichi lying about being a magical girl, because, well, it's Kokichi).
(I also got a small idea of Gonta being a magical girls and Kokichi originally tagging along him into labyrinths, Gonta also makes him a magic gun from the toy one he had, and at some point witches out & Kokichi manages to kill him with that gun. So he always has that spare Grief Seed on himself, bc it's still his best friend & he can't handle the idea of just giving it away or using it himself (he does anyway in the end).)
Shuichi prolly ends up being a new kid & it isn't like MadoHomu, the ppl who reach him first are Kaede & Kaito, classic. Kokichi's there, too, but he's his usual sus self. He's actually discouraging ppl from making a contract when they find out magic and miracles are real, which absolutely includes Shuichi. He's very vocal abt it, but he won't explain stutf, bc 1) he's a liar, so who'd believe him? and 2) he doesn't want them to witch out upon finding out the truth or, idk, murder everybody Mami-style.
Anyway, fast forward, bad things happen bingo & by the end of the run most charas are dead, there's Walpurgis nachting, and he makes his wish to bring back the ppl who died notably not as magical girls. Contract signed, he fights & fails, rip. I also thought it was similar to how he thought he could end the killing game by himself - he though he could finish Walpurgisnacht by himself, too. And he failed in both times. Whatevs.
Shuichi doesn't actually make his time travel wish for Ouma specifically, he wants to save all his friends. Timelines are messy esp at first bc he either tells then or it backfires or just makes himself look very sus bc he's trying not to tell them. He also realizes why Kokichi hadn't told anybody aby witches at some point, bc, yeah, it messes them a lot, assuming they believe it.
Still, Kokichi ends up one of the few people who are nearly always giving him a chance, not necessarily out of belief, but out of pragmatism - bro can stop time & knows the truth, that's just too useful. So they often work together & Shuichi grows closer to him but still we ain't there yet. But the thing is, Shuichi's time travel still makes Kokichi more & more powerful with each timeline, bc Shuichi usually goes back after Kokichi dies, so the universe figured out this guy's life's important. Anyway, another notable thing is the iconic Homura kills Madoka scene, but it's Saiouma with guest stars of Kaito & Maki. It's Walpy, it's not defeated yet, but the training trio are spent & just kinda accept their fate of turning into witches together. And then, boom, Kokichi appears & steals their Soul Gems for a sec & he's like did u know you can cleanse your Soul Gem with a darkened one? But it's a lie & he quickly tells them so, he just had a spare Grief Seed after cleansing his Soul Gem & he needs them to do some stuff. Shuichi can travel back in time & fix things, and Maki & Kaito are needed to fight Walpy here. He actually questions what happens to the timelines Shuichi leaves behin, and ofc he doesn't know. There's a chance they remain, so Kokichi needs Maki & Kaito to fight Walpy here.
Kaimaki leave, and Shuichi finally looks at Kokichi & realizes sth is Wrong. Kokichi struggles to hide how he's trembling & grimacing, and it's Kokichi, so obviously it must be extremely bad. Shuichi dreadfully realizes something worse, and he weakly asks Kokichi why aren't his wounds healing. And Kokichi just falls, laughing weakly, and Shuichi catches him & searches for his Soul Gem and, God, he knew it. It's nearly completely black. Kokichi laughs & admits he lied abt having two Grief Seeds, he only had one he never wanted to use. But they'll have the second one soon, so no need to worry. He asks Shuichi to maybe destroy his witch form as it's hatching, so he'll have the Grief Seed without any fighting… and he admits that he hates fighting, he hates this magical world and all its violence. He says that Kaito was right in calling him a coward, even here he just can't handle the idea of fighting any longer, he's so sorry. And Shuichi tells him he ISN'T a coward. He was scared, but he always followed everybody, trying to help, and when push came to shove he would always make a contract for the benefit of others rather than himself. He's a lot of things, but a coward isn't one. Kokichi actually tears up hearing that, and Shuichi promises he won't let him fight ever again, and especially he won't let him turn into a witch and hurt anybody, because he knows it's the last thing he's ever wanted. Even now he only accepts turning into a witch to help them fight to keep others safe. So Shuichi won't let him. Kokichi probably apologizes and thanks him and then he dies.
Keeping Kokichi from fighting starts off as a side quest that gains importance with time, bc it's something Shuichi won't compromise on (ah, trauma), which leads him to occassionally neglect others a bit, which makes them more likely to get hurt & ironically Kokichi more likely to make a contract, especially since he gets more powerful & Kyubey is more interested in him with each timeline. And that also makes him witch out super quick. Shuichi's paying more attention to him & over time grows resentful of others for how they're treating him. To Shuichi it's no question that Kokichi cares & is just doing his best to help, but nobody realizes that.
But the biggest obstacle in keeping Kokichi from fighting is actually Kokichi himself, bc he's too smart and nosy, lmao. Even if he knows nothing, he will find out quickly. Doesn't help that Kyubey wants him to make a contract.
Also, obviously Kaito is Sayaka-coded and Maki could be Kyouko-coded, so that's a thing, BUT it's usually Maki that witches out. Kaito is usually pretty close, but Kokichi intervenes & he survives, but Maki later cracks on her own (and since in the new timeline Kokichi isn't there, Kaito's the one to die, so he's still the secretary). So it's Kaito who gets the dramatic sacrifice. I imagine he genuinely hoped you could bring somebody back if you tried Very Hard & Kokichi called him a moron bc obviously it's not possible. If it was there'd be far less witches that there are. But it's Kaito, he doesn't listen to reason. So, Kokichi follows him to the labyrinth. At first Kaito's mad cuz what if Kokichi being there ruins the plan? Maki hates his guts! But eventually he gets hit pretty hard, and Kokichi is near immediately by his side, trying to help him get up, which kinda makes Kaito short circuit a little bc wait Kokichi's trying to help? But witch!Maki attacks them & Kokichi pushes Kaito away & gets caught himself (and choked until unconsciousness, naturally). Anyway, Kaito gets him away, Shuichi catches Kokichi & Kaito makes up his mind about going down with Maki & asks Shuichi to tell Kokichi that he's sorry. He doesn't get him, but he got hurt trying to protect him, so he'll believe in that if nothing else. F.
As for The WishTM, in the last timeline Shuichi lashes out at Kokichi for his willingness to just become part of the system. In no timeline has his wish actually helped, it did NOTHINHG, which OUCH but it also makes Kokichi think out of the box more & he becomes the Law of Cycles. And Shuichi realizes what is happening & freaks out bc Kokichi's doing it bc of what he told him & like Homura they end up having a momentTM in space & Shuichi remembers. He feels a lot of guilt even tho he also questions whether anything was real, but if it was, he pushed somebody he far too realized he loved into erasing himself from existence.
#hope it's not too long but i'll make it a read more if somebody thinks it is#i spammed discord i spammed bsky it's only fair i post it on tumblr too#kokichi ouma#shuichi saihara#saiouma#danganronpa#like obviously normally you'd go for something like Kokichi as Homura and Shuichi as Madoka and I'm just not that sure of it myself#like the vibes match at the first glance but the more I think about it the less it actually works for the characters in question#one of Kokichi's most defining chracteristics is that he cares a lot about everybody and frankly more than probably any other V3 character#but in a very... general sense if you get me. characters like Kaito and even Shuichi pick some people they like to care for and everybody#else is like whatever - sucked but now it's done like after Korekiyo's execution he says nothing abt him while both Makoto & Hajime offer#Celeste and Mikan some more thoughts and compassion; anyway obviously Kokichi doesn't care about say Kaede more than Shuichi but he still#gives all their lives the same amount of respect just for the sake of it; that's what makes chapter 4 so horrifying from his perspective#and also why in chapter 5 he isn't willing to do the same anymore and instead chooses to die himself so Maki of all people can survive and#so Kaito can go in a blaze of glory. and these two are arguably the two characters who treated him the worst (not that anybody treated him#well save for maybe Gonta and Kiibou). so i can't imagine Kokichi in Homura's role - reaching the point where he cares about only one perso#surviving while everybody else can die in a ditch bc the one time he picked his life over anybody else's he had a wholeass breakdown & then#killed himself several days later even though logically it would've made more sense to either kill Kaito who's dying anyway or throw Maki#under the bus since she was the one to fuck things up in the first place and proved herself to be a danger to the group.#Shuichi meanwhile he absolutely could given his lack of regard for some of the dead (Rantaro Ryouma idk abt Angie but I remember little#Korekiyo Miu and finally Kokichi himself) so he could snap at some point#anyway time to shut up it's getting long in these tags

I'll tell you what people's problem with The Crow 2024 is — I'm a longtime fan by the way, I own the comics, I watched all the movies, so on.
The Crow 1994 managed to get the soul of the source material (comics). The Crow is a story about overcoming grief and acceptance of death — the author wrote Eric's story during his darkest periods of grief after his girlfriend was killed. So the story of Eric and Shelley have meaning, they are meaningful characters to a lot of people. Brandon's movie, while with some differences from the original story, still carried the same themes beautifully and the tragedy that happened during the filming made people (me included) turn protective over the memory of The Crow and it’s meaning.
There were three other movies after The Crow 1994 but they never dared to touch on Eric's character, instead they created new ones like Ashe Corven, Jimmy Cuervo and Alex Corvis. And those movies suck, don’t get me wrong, but people don’t have a problem with them because they didn't touch on Brandon's Lee legacy and di their best to stay on theme — grief and acceptance. They are their own thing, and that's that.
So did the comics. Eric story is the first main one, but no one took him and tried to continue it, he's pretty much untouchable, he has his beginning and his end. Instead, they created new Crows for their stories: Joshua, Iris Shaw, Mark Leung...There's a long list of existing Crows with their own stories.
The problem with 2024 The Crow is mostly that they called it a remake and took Eric's names to a character that doesn’t even resembles the original Eric — and I'm not saying in physical appearance, I'm saying his essence because the original Eric is a killer of bad guys, but he's also pretty charismatic; he loved life, he was gentle with the little girl Sarah he was friends with, he was kind, he was thoughtful, he even jokes around! Which, to many people, Bill's Eric does not resembles even a little bit of Eric's other than his name and neither does his story matches the themes and soul behind The Crow franchise.
The main gripe The Crow community has with the 2024 version is them taking Eric's and Shelley story, then changing it so much and losing it's soul when the easiest thing to avoid all this controversy and review bombing would've been just be like "Hey, we're making a new Crow movie, but we have created our own original protagonists for it!" just like people have been doing for years, because that's what 2024 Shelley and Eric feel like to people — original characters who just happen to share the names of the OG's.
Anyway, I watched the 2024 version and while Bill did a phenomenal job as always with what he was given and he looks so damn good, the story just...Didn't get me at all. There's not one bit of The Crow essence in there for me.
Hello, thank you for sharing your thoughts! 💞 I finally watched The Crow 1994 and City of Angels today (still need to watch Salvation & Wicked Prayer) so fortunately I now have a bit more context.
The problem with 2024 The Crow is mostly that they called it a remake
So to begin my breakdown: The 2024 isn't a remake of the 1994 movie. This seems to be a widespread misconception. But in all of the clips and trailers Lionsgate has released, they clarify that it's a "modern re-imagining of the original graphic novel". The movie never claims to be a remake of the 1994 film.
Now a fair debate could be how closely tied (or not) the '24 movie is to the graphic novel, which the two are remarkably different, but based on the reviews and comments I've seen, fans seem more inclined to keep comparing it to the 1994 adaptation despite Lionsgate never claiming they were trying to remake that specific film.
So basically, comparisons between '94 Eric and '24 Eric don't really hold up as valid criticisms in my opinion, because the director had no intention of adapting the '24 film from the '94 movie in the first place.
the original Eric is a killer of bad guys, but he's also pretty charismatic; he loved life, he was gentle with the little girl Sarah he was friends with, he was kind, he was thoughtful, he even jokes around! Which, to many people, Bill's Eric does not resembles even a little bit
'24 Eric is still a killer of killers. He only kills those that attack him first or had something to do with his and Shelly's deaths. He never kills needlessly.
In regards to him loving life, 2024 Eric does in droves! He actively hates having to kill so many people and takes no enjoyment out of it. The opera scene, while fantastic, wasn't a fun moment for him. Since her death, you can tangibly feel that all he wants to do is get back to his simple life with Shelly. He loves her and he loves the life they had.
As for him being charismatic, I can see your point there. In the graphic novels (from summaries I've read), GN Eric does have a morbid sense of humor and at times played around with his kills before finishing the job. His relationship with Sherri was brief but sweet and he gets a cute cat!! He continues to form relationships even after Shelly's death because of his charisma and kindness.
From a writing perspective, I believe all of these moments are intended to humanize Eric given the GN begins with him as The Crow pretty much immediately. We are introduced to him already in the throes of his grief and seeking vengeance.
In contrast, the '24 film paces the transition MUCH slower with the first act being about how Shelly and Eric meet, and the growth of their romance. I believe Director Rupert Sanders used those scenes to humanize the characters instead, which he accomplishes as both Eric and Shelly feel like they're just normal people dealt a shitty hand who only want to live their lives together. You can see the love they shared and how pure it was.
Basically, the core of the characters remain the same, just told in different ways throughout the story. In the graphic novel, James O'Barr humanizes Eric & adds levity in the midst of the carnage, while Rupert Sanders adds it before the carnage. Despite the timeline differences, both succeed in showing that Eric isn't a mindless murdering machine, and is just a regular guy who's been driven to the point of madness.
(It still would've been a nice touch for '24 Eric to adopt a cat for Shelly in the movie though.)
Bill's Eric does not resembles even a little bit of Eric's other than his name and neither does his story matches the themes and soul behind The Crow franchise.
From my understanding, the main themes behind the franchise are grief, the difficulty to move past it, and divine justice.
All three Erics suffer from visions of Shelly, who's memory plays on a feedback loop as they go about their spree. Something both the '94 and '24 films don't do, however, is touch on GN Eric's self harm tendencies. Which isn't a criticism! I'm merely discussing the different ways they show Eric's state of mourning.
The inability to move on is also still prevalent in the '24 movie. It's an active choice Eric makes when Kronos gives him the option to get his life back, and instead Eric submerges deeper and signs away his soul. He steps into it with his eyes wide open knowing he's damning himself forever.
Meanwhile in the graphic novel, Eric is already submerged. He is already a walking corpse, the embodiment of a heart so broken the only way to put himself back together is to weaponize the shards of his loss. I believe this is who '24 Eric develops into after the second act when he signs away his soul.
In the first act, he is human. In the second act, he is transitioning, and in the third act, he has truly become The Crow. Too deep in grief to escape it. The main difference between the '24 version and the GN version is that we see '24 Eric's journey to reach that final stage. It's the difference between character-focused narratives vs parable-like storytelling. Neither is inherently better than the other, just different.
And when it comes to divine justice, hmmm.....
In the GN, Eric and Shelly are killed and brutalized due to a completely random act of evil. The gang that killed them and assaulted Shelly had zero connections to the couple and were just some cruel, awful randos off the street. Based on what I've read, Eric nearly kills all of them without difficulty. Most of his hardship comes from his own bouts of depression and misery.
(By the way, by having the villains all be mediocre average goons, and majority of Eric's troubles be psychological, the GN focuses more on the danger of all-consuming grief, highly likely because of the trauma James O'Barr was experiencing when he wrote it. Meanwhile both the '94 and '24 films have Eric struggle a lot more during his fight scenes, elevating the danger of his physical opponents. But this is a tangent, back to what I was talking about!)
By all of them being average goons, the story gets across that: yes normal everyday people can and are capable of atrocious acts of evil, and yes they deserve to face the brunt of their crimes and divine punishment.
However in both the '94 and '24 movies, Eric and Shelly's deaths are not random and are planned crimes to silence Shelly. And both come up with a "big bad" for Eric to face off against. In the '94 movie, it was Top Dollar, a criminal kingpin, and in the '24 movie it's Vincent Roeg, a rich executive who's also a crimelord.
BUT what the '24 film does differently is that Roeg is also a supernatural being himself, who's made a pact with the devil to trade innocent souls for immortality.
This is probably the only area in which I agree with OG fans on that a central theme was changed. Because by making the main antagonist "unnatural", it's no longer about everyday, normal people committing horrible evils. It's about a supernatural entity on par with The Crow.
I think Rupert Sanders wanted to focus more on the supernatural aspect of The Crow universe. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing and definitely made for a fun movie, but I do agree with OG fans that the "grounded" nature of casual human cruelty was lost in that regard.
By implementing this change, the weight of Eric's vengeance is also changed. Because now it's no longer just personal. As the character of Kronos says in the movie, they need Eric to kill Roeg because he and all the deaths he's caused are unnatural and they essentially need Eric to tip the scales back into balance. While Eric's primary motive is still about doing right by Shelly, there's now an element of saving the world from an unnaturally superpowered tyrant, rather than the everyday cruelties of man.
So in this aspect, I do agree that a core theme was changed between the graphic novel and the 2024 movie. This still doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad story, just that Rupert Sanders had different intentions.
Because this still connects to the previous theme, the inability to move on and cope with death. Except now it's portrayed in the antagonist as well. His power is completely about his refusal to accept his own mortality. However, this does, like I said, detract from the normality of evil theme. So it's basically a gain and a loss 😅
(Plus, as I was writing this, I thought about how Eric's motivation is changed as well. In the '24 movie, Eric's goal is still to do right by Shelly, but it's to save her. Because if he succeeds, Shelly will be resurrected. This adds a noble spin to his killing spree, whereas the GN and the '94 film are solely about overwhelming rage at the loss of a loved one. There is no resurrecting Shelly. It's about enacting divine justice against their killers before traveling to the afterlife together. They're already dead and there's nothing GN Eric can do to change that, unlike 2024 Eric.
On the flip side, while this "nobler" take may feel like a negative change, I think it's countered by the fact that Eric succeeds in saving her, but is still dissatisfied because he's unable to actually be with her. GN and '94 Eric were able to find peace and reunite with their loves. '24 Eric only gets about 5 minutes before she's resurrected and he's stuck in purgatory forever.
At the end of the '24 film, both Eric and Shelly are dissatisfied as they can no longer be together. It's a bittersweet ending that feels more bitter than sweet. So while there is a "nobler" cause behind Eric's actions, the tone of the story is still very grim.
This is also why I believe the way the 2024 movie ended was with the intentions of a sequel where Eric does achieve his own peace. But that's a different conversation!)
...the easiest thing to avoid all this controversy and review bombing would've been just be like "Hey, we're making a new Crow movie, but we have created our own original protagonists for it!" just like people have been doing for years, because that's what 2024 Shelley and Eric feel like to people — original characters who just happen to share the names of the OG's.
Sure! I don't disagree. Well, I don't really think anything deserves to be review bombed unless it's content that's actively harmful. But I don't disagree with the original protagonists angle. Changing the names couldn't have hurt.
That said though, and I say this as gently as I can, Eric's character existed before '94 Eric and does not need to end with the '94 movie. I think it'd be one thing if the 1994 movie created the story of The Crow and that was the first iteration of Eric's character. But... it's not.
Multiple re-imaginings and adaptations of books / comics have been around since forever. The show Smallville and Man of Steel both adapt Superman in wildly different ways. Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew has had five different adaptations, and yet no one shits on 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) or Deliver Us From Eva (2003) for being modern re-imaginings. Awhile ago, me and my friend were discussing our favorite adaptations of the Little Women novel. Her favorite is the 1994 film while my favorite is the 2022 modern Kdrama!
I bring up all of these examples to say that there is REALLY nothing wrong with doing modern re-imaginings of older works, and tweaking characters and plotlines to reflect the changed style of the story and time period.
What's most important is that the heart of the story is kept. At the end of the day, The Crow is about an innocent man who enacts divine justice against he and his lover's murderers, while struggling to cope with her loss. Based on the graphic novel and what I've seen of the 1994 movie and the City of Angels sequel, the world of The Crow says that life can be fair and that no matter how high, or low, or cruel, or spineless, someone is, that karma is a bitch and it IS possible for them to reap what they sow.
I truly think the 2024 adaptation captured that feeling, even if it may look different than what people might be used to or expected.
Instead of being upset about how unexpected it is, try going in with an open mind and seeing the story Rupert, Bill, and FKA Twigs wanted to tell. I've read and seen a few interviews by now, and these three were genuinely passionate about the characters & story, and you can feel that in the movie.
And even if you still have no interest, the other parts of the franchise you do enjoy aren't going anywhere. The 2024 adaptation doesn't effect them in any capacity. The stories you love still exist and the new addition can't harm or take them away from you.
#asks#anon#the crow 2024#the crow#like i definitely do think it was good of the sequels#to not touch the Eric Draven story given ya know what happened#but its been 2 decades now#i think it's been a respectful length of time#and i dont think another movie about Eric Draven would tarnish the 1994 version in ANY way#nor do i think it tarnishes the graphic novel#re-imaginings and adaptations /cant/ take away from previous installments or the original source#because those versions will ALWAYS be there to enjoy regardless#its not that the '2024 movie lacks soul'#its that youre too busy looking for a copy & paste of the same exact story told in the same exact way it has been before#that youre actively refusing to see it#anyway WOW did not expect this to be an essay holy sh#anyway i really liked this movie and plan to see it a second time#im sorry you didnt enjoy it but if the movie lacks anything then 'passion and soul' definitely isnt one of them

Bless Mokumokuren for outright stating that the genre tags for Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu have never changed, i.e. the official site never dropped the "BL" tag from the series as it got more popular to reach a wider audience. It's been a persistent rumor in the fandom, and one I'm afraid will start circulating again once the anime starts airing.
If you mainly follow English language sources, please remember that whatever tags different anime and manga sites, databases, aggregators etc., either add or leave out don't always reflect the author's intent and the official sources, and should NOT be used to argue for what genre or demographic a certain work belongs to. It can just be random people claiming whatever they want based on their own interpretations and I've seen plenty of errors and real time changes to them based on new chapter developments, that might help catch the attention of some people, but don't suddenly change the genre of the work itself.
Not having BL as a genre tag also doesn't mean that a work can't include any boys loving. The queer themes have always been present in HGSN, and if you're up to date with the manga, they've been outright stated. Having queer characters or a queer story line doesn't automatically mean that a work is BL or yuri, and not including those tags doesn't mean that it's just "baiting". This gets brought up so much I think Mokumokuren's gotten tired of it, because the other day they clearly spelled it out for everyone, assuring that the story is queer, although it's not tagged as BL or focused on romance.
Here's what they shared on their Bluesky account:
The genre tag and advertising direction on the official website have never changed since the beginning of serialization. From the beginning, it has been consistently promoted as a "coming-of-age horror" within the official reach. (It's also true that the official reach is very limited…) Whatever the genre tag is, and even if this story isn't a romance, as the author, I guarantee that it is a queer story. There seems to be a persistent false rumor going around that "the author suddenly removed the BL tag from the official website by the 3rd volume," but the truth is that there was never an official BL tag from the beginning. (This is not to deny any queerness.)
And further back:
My opinion that the genre of The Summer Hikaru Died is something that the readers are free to think about on their own remains unchanged, but I view it as a story that sympathizes with those who have been left out of stories about love and sex, so I describe it as "coming-of-age horror." I think the key is the fear of not being “normal” and not having a place to belong, which is common for all kinds of people regardless of their attributes. I think it's fine for queer stories that aren't romances to exist. That's why I've been careful not to position it as a love story from the start.
Let's stop obsessing over tags and allow queer stories to exist and thrive, even when they lack a clear romantic plot or subplot and are more subdued.
#my nonsense#hikaru ga shinda natsu#the summer hikaru died#i've been following mokumokuren for years and they've been getting more and more direct about this#i have to imagine they've gotten tired of international fans pestering them about this to really spell it out#usually using some english too#they also pointed out how genre definitions can differ in different countries so expectations differ too#it must be so frustrating to be writing a queer story about not fitting in and constantly have ppl saying you're not doing it right ;____;#also i don't know how much of a problem this is anymore (apparently still to some degree?) or how necessary this post is anymore#but i want it to exist for new fans esp those who find it thought the anime since i know the baiting discourse will start up again#and old ones who lack media literacy or maybe don't follow and translate mokumokuren's tweets and bluesky stuff#speaking of should i get a bluesky account???#(also the translations are janky bc i used translators and can't spend any extra energy on them pls forgive me)

"i don’t care if you want to act happy-go-lucky, but if you, the man who is above me, ever shows weakness, next time, the one leaving the crew will be me!" — "if the first words coming from usopp are a sincere apology, then we’re all good. otherwise, there’s no place here for him to come back to.
i am ill, i am diseased; zoro shouldering the role of being the voice of reason, pulling rank as the first mate and reminding the rest of the crew that luffy, as easy going as he may be, is still their captain, is one to be respected, because a crew without respect and a leader who doesn't demand it is destined to fail. and you know it's serious when sanji agrees with zoro. they can't just welcome usopp back with open arms because he challenged the captain, lost, and left and “we’re not little kids playing pirates.”
#OR NEXT TIME IT'S GOING TO BE ME WHO LEAVES#HOLLERING#hollering holler hollering#i have soooooo many thoughts#imagining how much this stings for luffy and how much it does for zoro#especially because you know how important loyalty is to zoro#and like!! he misses his friend too!! but usopp LEFT. he MADE that choice (challenging luffy) and must deal with the consequences#and for any of them to welcome him back like nothing is a spit in the face and complete lack of respect#because they AREN'T playing pirates -- this is real with real consequences#there are those who have killed for less#godddd i have a lot of thoughts hang on i had to write them down#you're getting them in all of their stream of consciousness glory#kate watches op#enies lobby
