thinking about lacie (as i often do) and how one of the only moments we get to see her outside of another character’s flashback is when oswald is traveling back in time to kill her. and she sees her brother, and knows that her death is going to result in him doing this. and she looks at oswald, as she looks at you, the reader, and she says ‘i’m sorry.’ lacie is sorry for being pushed to the decision she has to make, one that will cause countless deaths and the suffering of many, one that *begins the story of pandora hearts.* lacie is not cruel. lacie does not WANT people to suffer. and yet, lacie goes through with it, because it is the KINDEST action she can take here. it is the ONLY way that the story has a chance of a happy ending, and she is TELLING YOU THIS!!! in one of the only moments she is living breathing at the same time as the other characters!! as they themselves are breaking outside the narrative!!

Glen, Children of Misfortune, Juries and the Baskervilles

[When I say Glen, I am referring all Glens- past and present: Levi, Oswald, Gil and Leo. Hella lot of lore is here that I wanna write about ;-; so I might divide this into different posts let's see. Also fair warning: I might criticize Oswald's actions-past and present- a bit, since I love looking at characters from an unbiased pov. Also, maybe some characters' past actions in order to point to their character development so that too.]

4] Oswald and Lacie

Truth be told, Oswald has always been “passive”. He doesn’t know what he really wants. He had already been training to become the next Glen (ref: Part 1) and it was drilled into his mind that he was to cast Lacie into the Abyss right from the beginning. He doesn’t question this rule.

Not even when Lacie hints that the purpose of the existence of a Child of Ill-Omen might not be what it is said to be (Retrace 101):

And his answer to this theory of hers is:

You are not crazy. If that’s the answer you came to, it is doubtlessly the truth for you.

That’s… that’s not the right response to it!!!

“The truth for you,” he says, basically responding: “Oh if what you say makes you happy, then so be it. But the truth is different.” (No! It is not!)

Why won’t he grasp at straws to save her if he loved her and cared about her? Why won’t he even try to research the possible truth of her words? Why won’t he at least make an attempt to stop the needless execution of his dear sister? Lacie has grown up beside him; what great ‘threat’ did she cause to the condition of the Abyss in all those years she was alive? But he doesn’t dare question any of it; he simply, quietly, “passively” goes ahead with what was asked of him.

[Whereas, in Retrace 91/92, it’s proven Lacie had been right all along. Nothing like Child of “Ill-Omen” exists and all of those lies had been set down as “rules” for the Juries’ selfish purposes.]

Again, I’d also, well not exactly excuse him, but, as Oz and Break say, there is always the chance that he couldn’t have known the truth about the Child of Ill-Omen. Not until after Lacie had died and perhaps, during his short stint as Glen, he must have come to realize that the Jury had more to do with this affair than met the eye, the reason why he brought along Vincent to the final Gate in the last Arc.

Okay, but this aside, his response to her every word is always so... resigned?

See, Retrace 72:

Why does Lacie have to be the one to do this? She is the sinner here, your prisoner due to be executed in five days; why would you ask something like this of her? If Oswald truly wanted Lacie to survive, he should have been the one to tell Jack everything and ask him to take her away with him if he can't protect her anymore. But he keeps quiet.

(He does regret this, in Retrace 101.)

I chose being the head of Baskervilles over being Lacie's older brother. And yet I did not drive Jack away, even after I realized how twisted he had become.

He is ruthless in some places, soft in some. Like if he was ruthless to Lacie, he'd have been the same to Jack as well. The reason he was not, because that was the only way he could be soft on himself and lessen his own guilt.

Continuing from there, (Retrace 73), Lacie is the one to apologize for being "too harsh on him" and then goes on to tell how she has never regretted being born with red eyes or living in this world. "I love this world," she says.

Okay, this is a panel of so many contradictions, you know. Oswald says Lacie is strong, but she disagrees and says she is "ten times more cynical than other people."

Both of them are wrong.

Lacie was neither strong nor cynical. She was scared. Yes, scared. Terrified. Lacie was terrified of dying, of being cast into the Abyss, so terrified that she woke herself up from nightmares of their first day at the Baskerville estate, of learning her fate from the Jury and Glen...

....just mere days before her execution: (Retrace 67/68)

I am going off a tangent to do a quick character analysis of Lacie (I will do a longer one later, but just this one aspect of her characterization) that both Oswald and Jack had the wrong impression of Lacie. Oswald assumed her to be so strong that she could shoulder the burden of loneliness and death all by herself. He assumed she didn't want to live any longer, that she had already seen so much and experienced all that the world has to offer that she no longer had any more worldly desires. In short, he saw her as some sort of motherly saint.

As for Jack, she is his Dream Girl to put it simply. At the most depressing and most vulnerable point of his life, when he chanced to meet such a vibrant girl like Lacie, he latched onto her for his life, absorbed every word she uttered, learnt the song she sang once on a whim and sang nothing but that for the next eight years. The casual advice she gave him as a turbulent, rebellious and frivolous teenager... okay, but, let's be real here. Lacie was simply spouting whatever came to her mouth atm in the name of 'advice'. She was passing time till her brother apologized to her and she'd be brought back home. She most probably didn't think Jack, being one of a kind, would accept her words so literally that he obeys them verbatim, even if he was disgusted by what he was forcing himself to do. He put her on a sky high pedestal that he was scared to even touch her lest she loses her "magic" in his mind. That's also the reason why he never questions her lie (her lie about the Succession Ceremony) because he was scared whatever image he had of her might shatter if he pressed on. (Yeah, I gotta write a longer post about Jack's and Lacie's relationship, bc it's one of the most fucked-up yet tragic, most hollow yet sincere relationships if ever there was one)

I guess, of all people, as sad as it is, only Levi got to see her at her most vulnerable? (Retrace 68):

Neither Oswald nor Jack have seen her like this—a scared girl, full of loneliness and regrets of not being able to live longer. And yet, when Levi casually mentions about her death in another five days, she grins as if she's looking forward to it. Which, in reality, is just a mask to cover her terror.

Why I am saying this is—as context for Oswald's line "I shall be lonely if you disappear" and her midnight walk later to the tree where the three of them used to hang out. Lacie says big things like I love this world, I love the Abyss, even when Levi asked her to assist his 'experiment', her only query was if the Abyss won't be lonely anymore,,, but she doesn't let her own loneliness or regrets to surface. She bottles up all of it. Why? Because she has to be strong for Oswald and pretend like she is taking all of this in stride to lessen his guilt.

Whereas Oswald does not ask her if she is alright. If she is lonely. If she is scared of being cast into the Abyss. If she wants to run away.

(In fact, if you see the hug, it's Lacie who is hugging Oswald in a comforting, motherly hug as if he's in greater need of comfort than her, because, of course, she must be completely, totally at terms with her Fate, right?)

In that regard, I am sure Jack would definitely have inquired after her if only he didn't place her on an otherworldly pedestal and realized things might go wrong with his Dream Girl too. Moreover and most importantly, Jack was kept in dark about most things connected to the Baskervilles and he had also promised not to dig too much if he was only allowed to meet Lacie. So I won't blame him for not pressing when she lied. He must have assumed it's Something Baskerville Ritual, not that it'd be something that'd directly affect his Lacie.

But Oswald is her big brother. Oswald knows everything about the Baskervilles. He is going to become the next Glen. Yet... he does nothing, asks nothing. Almost like Oswald had long given her up for dead. Like he can't do anything for her anymore whereas she is still alive and chatting right there with him.

He is always thinking of the days after she'd be gone, and never ever gives any thought to their present.

Remember Rufus Barma's words from Retrace 86 and I must agree:

You speak as if you've already given up.

Exactly. As I said in Part 1 of this long essay, Oswald was the full-fledged Glen when he cast Lacie into the Abyss. With the title of Glen, even if he simply brushes aside the rules and sets new ones for his reign, who could possibly question him? He had five black-winged chains of the Abyss in his possession. The Juries might protest,, but if Lacie is there, they can't do anything. They are scared of the Child of Misfortune.

Even Leo points this out correctly:

He is always waiting for someone with a stronger will to come help him out of problems he needs to solve on his own.

In his penultimate appearance, he finally, finally, takes a decision and drops his sword. He decides to not kill his sister a second time. And, immediately, people who have always cared for him (if only he ever gave them a chance) gather around him to assure him that he had done well, done enough.

Well, tl;dr, what I am trying to say is that Oswald should have stuck firmly to his decision whatever it was. If he had cast Lacie into the Abyss, then he should have dealt with the consequences appropriately. If he had stopped her execution, then he should have been strong enough to face off the Juries. Whatever his decision, he should have been thorough with it instead of being half-hearted, passive and resigned about everything.

Ending this loooong essay (;_;) on a funny yet interesting note (this omake from Vol. 19) which presents the kind of Oswald I actually wanted to see. The premise might be absurd but he, for once, drops his air of resignation and faces off the Glen himself for his sister, going to the extent of dropping formality and addressing him by his name lol

Fandom: Pandora Hearts

blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): I'm happy to say I have never stopped blorbo-ing Jack Vessalius in 4 years, have bestowed on him the highest honor (the aroace headcanon) and by this point i'm downright projecting. Of course I can't not mention Oswald/Glen because when you ship something so hard you don't know who was the original blorbo and who's just so integral to the way you view them that they might as well have been the original blorbo. Oh and for the record, these two are *also* my poor little meow meows and my horse plinkos. idk I do have something extreme going on haha, which is to say that I have the unbearable urge to make everything better in the fanfiction world, but I also have the unbearable urge to make it even worse. Mostly for sympathy though, thus the plmm part. 😂 with that out of the way for the sake of this meme i'll go with the second best answer for the other two questions <3

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): just.... Elliot Nightray. I mean look at him! Petting stray cats and starting fights with strangers over blorbos! There's just, there's just so much of me in there!

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) : ADA. god i love her so much and want to protect her forever but i also think she's incredibly human and playful and wise, like she's actually the only sane adult in spite of the toxicity she puts up with! 🥺 It reminds me that I got the opportunity to write a fic from her pov once for a zine and that makes me v happy <3 (and then i forgot to publish it on ao3 i should edit it and do that someday) Also her uncle Oscar tbh. I really love their vibes.

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) oof i'm not sure i have much in terms of obscure faves in PH, part of that because Mochizuki takes the time to decently develop even supporting characters (often better than main characters *cough* black alice *cough*) Miranda Barma maybe? I mean we share a blorbo and all

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) White Alice (aka Alyss) I think it's so fascinating how much in common she has with Lacie in her looks and personality and behaviour except that she literally has god-like powers and for some reason she still comes off as more pathetic and vulnerable and poor little meow meowy and idk I just love that.

horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason) Levi Baskerville. I find him hilarious, he has the rotten luck of a Baskerville and I have so little sympathy for him as a person that I think he's perfect for that specific genre of crack/comedy where nothing ever goes his way.

eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell) Xai Vessalius, Ada's dad, for being an insane abusive pos and yet still being so very human and hurt that I care enough to eeby deeby him.

Hii,this is my first ask so apologies for going overboard w some of them 😭😭😭 and there are some spoilers for alot of them.

Anyways these are my faves (in no particular order because I am amazingly indecisive)

Let's start

Ciel Phantomhive (Kuroshitsuji)

FIRST,LOOK AT HIM HE'S SO ADORABLE AND LOVELY,IS IT POSSIBLE TO NOT LOVE HIM??

Well, the main reason I loved him since the beginning was because he was a child character who gave me the bratty little sibling vibes btw,and I absolutely love such characters, but his character is much more than that. He is a genius seeking revenge for his family,he is cold and ruthless at times,but beneath all those actions,he deeply cares for whatever family he's left with. His intentions aren't the most noble ones unlike the other characters that I have mentioned, and his motives are personal.

But all in all,he is a child whose childhood was cruelly stolen from him too,and he did what he could to survive in their world. And honestly I do admire that.

Also I love although he acts very adultlike,eg: wearing high heeled boots,using canes,speaking w/o any nonsense,there are little moments where he does remind us that he is after all that,a child.

Lacie Baskerville (Pandora Hearts)

Tbh I adore most of the characters from pandora hearts, but Lacie is most probably my fave.

Through the lens of a certain character,she initially appears as the picture perfect,manic pixie dream girl. Though in reality,she appears to be fickle and rebellious(which is not entirely a lie,lol).

However,she is a deeply empathetic person. Because of her existence as a child of ill omen,she is pretty much destined to live a short life,and faced persecution from the world due to that. But inspite of all that, she never resented her fate or the world,instead she thought that she was one of those who were able to experience both the beauty and the cruelty of the world. She was able to empathize with the feelings of the core,and was able to sense the loneliness of the core,the same core that was one of the reasons behind her terrible fate.

She's also extremely critical of the things that are said and did not accept them without question, and tried to find the reason behind them an open minded queen smh . Such characters are really refreshing imo.

We did not see much about her tbh, her role wasn't big in the plot as an active character, and most of the things we know abt her comes from the eyes of others, Lacie is very much just a memory,but a beautiful one, imo.

Suwon( Akatsuki no Yona)

This is getting long I am sorry😭😭

ANYWAY

Well,when I started YoTD, I was aware of what happens in ep 1,and I pretty much expected (from the reviews and all) Suwon's character to be the usual tyrannical prince who takes away the throne from the poor princess, and well, the anime certainly proved me wrong. Despite his first appearance as the one who killed the king, the anime does prove that he did not do that w/o any reason, he tries to improve the status of his country and to unite the 5 tribes, his thoughts during the coronation scene weren't anything like : "I finally became the king after 10 years and avenged my father" (like he told Yona how much he looked forward to the day he would finally kill Il) or something,but his first thought was about improving the status of his nation, and to make it strong enough to fight against all the looming dangers outside the border,like Sei,Kai empire etc, and to unite the 5 broken tribes. Before that,he also fondly remembers his friends,Hak and Yona. He remembers the flashback of Hak telling him about being his right hand later on, he refers to Yona as "the girl who provided him warmth",and how he threw them aside for the whole thing. I think that does speak a lot abt his character, he did love his friends, he also loved his nation and he has to move forward for the sake of his country. He is incredibly selfless when it comes to his country,and that really does move my heart. Also his character is,very appealing imo? He is relatable because in a manga of supernatural humans and a literal god incarnate,he is the one who aspires for the power of humans, not all of us can be chosen gods from a prophecy or smth, he tries to move forward with what he has,the power of the people, all of this really did win my heart back in ep 6 tbh😭.

He's also not a saintly good pure white lotus sort of character, he has to dirty his hands for what he wants,but he still tries to keep it to the minimum. He does not go for unnecessary bloodshed,like the whole deal with the fire tribe's rebellion where he tries his best to keep the casualty as less as possible.He's intelligent and well versed in the matters of human nature, and despite all this talent he still does lose at times.

He's curious,and his silly,goofy moments are such a treat.

He's also very gorgeous and beautiful btww😭😭

Vanitas of the Blue Moon/Luna( Vanitas no Carte)

They have me screaming over them since they appeared 😭😭😭

Tbh their character is mostly shrouded in mystery,but from what we've seen,they're a kind,a great parental figure to two very traumatized children. Also I feel they did do something that's terrible initially but they regret it deeply now? But all that is just a question for now.

Also I love their clumsy attitude 😭😭 it's super adorable and how they were just sulking after vani insulted their cooking,their whole relationship is so wholesome and sweet yet painfully sad😭 but Ig that's MochiJun for you.

Noé Archiviste (Vanitas no Carte)

He,he's an absolute dork okay😭😭😭 but not one without the trauma thoo :")

Firstly,he isn't like most of the other vampires at all,who think humans or vampires from the blue moon clan suck,on the contrary,he thought that the blue moon looked really beautiful. He is kind,sweet,childlike but greatly determined to protect the one's he's left with. But the reason I adore him is definitely his simple and sweet behaviour,it's reallyy refreshing to see characters like him tbh. He has gone through a lot of trauma,but that did not change him as a person entirely,which is very admirable(although that might not be the case when the manga ends,all thanks to MochiJun ^-^)

Hotaru Tomoe (Sailor Moon)

I love her sweet,quiet and reserved personality,and also how this sweet,quiet girl straight up holds one of the most dangerous powers of the whole series. And her intro was soo cool and chilling. And she was so brave and strong despite going through so much trauma,she was really incredible. Also her friendship w ChibiUsa was soo sweet and wholesome. She's also such a young fashion icon.

Lelouch vi Britannia (Code Geass)

HIS INTELLIGENCE,CHARISMA,AND PERSONALITY IS AMAZING. I can't talk abt the ending w/o spoiling it entirely but that increased my love for him so much😭😭 . Also his relationship w the characters in the series,like he is cold and calculating but not entirely ruthless and evil,he's still compassionate towards those he cares about,and my fav part abt him is his relationship w his little sis whom he practically raised despite being a child himself,and despite going through sm trauma, it's honestly just so admirable. Also his relationship w his best friend,it's just so heart touching. And I love all his moments where he is just straight up terrible w anything that requires physical strength lol,and he's also incredibly handsome as expected of CLAMP really.

William James Moriarty (Moriarty the Patriot)

Again, first,he's really admirable considering how he thought of making his country better as a child,like,despite all that he went though,he still thought of others. I also love how he is aware of the fact that what he's doing isn't justice but something that needs to be done,something that's necessary, and how he is very much aware that the methods he uses,regardless of what his goal is,are still questionable. Also love how ever since he was a child,he was very much the "elder sister" figure for everyone in the orphanage,and his relationship with his brothers,it's so heartwarming😭😭. AND THE FACT THAT HE'S JUST A THEATRE KID AT HEART,and the way the manga deals with him is amazing imo.

Nie HuaiSang (Mo dao zu shi)

MY MDZS FAVEE

ok firstly,nhs is just,super relatable to me? Idk how to explain it but it's something very much related to yk the asian student struggles in a traditional society, although he completely disregards his education lol,but the way he behaved in the past timeline,it's kind of relatable to me. He's also very much of a drama queen who faints in any serious situation  like yes sir you're living my dream life. But aside from that, I feel like he is one of the most..idk but he used to be one of the most normal teens imo, like WWX has this terrible self sacrificial attitude, we don't need to start on JC's issues, JZX was arrogant(tho I don't blame him), LWJ was kept on a pedestal by his clan and was thus very much isolated from the other ppl of his age,but him? He's very much like how most of the teenagers are, his main concern isn't smth very great,but just clearing his grades and leaving the CR for good. He wants to follow his hobbies, and to live his life w his loved one's,although he is still certainly not blind to the ways in which the world works.He's also very open minded when it comes to the unorthodox ways,eg:his support towards WWX's ideas.

He's also self accepting,which is a great attribute imo.

In the present timeline tho,yes he's the one hidden behind the shadows who upgraded from catching pretty birds to [redacted] ,the one who manipulated most of the events of the present timeline,all that is also really cool . I still dearly miss CR NHS tho :(

Raven (Teen Titans)

She was my childhood obsession bc she was literally the coolest one in the group imo. Dark powers,mysterious,gothic fashion and quiet,reserved personality. Also her sarcastic sense of humor?It's pure gold , she's really mature and calm in most of the situation,and was like so different from the rest of her group. Her mysterious nature was what primarily drew me towards her,but the fact that she is soo powerful? I LOVE IT SM BC SHE WAS A POWERFUL FEM CHARACTER WHO AT THE SAME TIME WAS VULNERABLE AS WELL(yes there are indeed many characters for whom the shoe fits,but she was pretty much the 1st one for me,so she's really special).

How I feel about this character

REALLY FUCKING FUNNY. MY SIXTEEN YEAR OLD DOOMER OTAKU PROPHET MASTER WHO TAKES PLEASURE IN WATCHING ME GAMBLE MY LIFE’S SAVINGS FOR A GACHA JPG

Ultimately I have less to say abt most of the child characters in PH but there’s a lot to say abt how Leo relates to Glen as an entity... the thing is Lacie Knew that in order for society to be restructured to no longer isolate Abyss/to end the oppression of the Children of Ill Omen Glen would need to incarnate without being directly cursed by Jury... meaning that she knew her brother would need to be killed/the Baskervilles destroyed..................... but that’s about Lacie

Mostly he was a traumatized child who was WAY in over his head and like Vincent unreasonably believed that it would be better for his loved ones to have never met him at all than to suffer his existence. Which is why their relationship is so important lol (and why I’m honestly more invested in Vincent and Leo’s relationship than Leo and Elliot’s... we love it when characters are foils)

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Elliot tho I’m not really an ElliLeo person I think ultimately the point w their relationship was that Leo’s complete inability to function without Elliot around was... a problem. And actually this is something I can talk about in my controversial opinions section

My non-romantic OTP for this character

I used to not care about Vincent and Leo’s relationship much but now I think about it a lot it’s so so so good that they’re friends who love each other very much it is literally the funniest shit ever

Their relationship reminds me of Oz and Echo’s in a lot of ways in that they both felt as though they were in the same boat except in this case the two of them made an agreement to actively hack at the base of the ship while it was in the open ocean. Their relationship is Leo going hey wait if we keep doing this Vincent is going to die and I kind of love him actually and this would suck

It’s actually ultimately all words to VINCENT that gets through to Leo, ironically, because he understands Vincent as someone very similar to himself. And while none of these things really got through to Vincent because he finds himself to be fundamentally unworthy of existence it got through to Leo because it allowed him to recontextualize his feelings to be about someone else who he genuinely cared about. It’s good I’ve been thinking abt them a lot recently

My unpopular opinion about this character

ElliLeo is not a bad ship if you ship it that is fine I think it was the least evil outcome for being by far the most popular PH ship. However a LOT of ElliLeo stuff romanticizes Leo’s obsession and emotional dependency on Elliot despite Leo’s arc being about learning to actually see value in his own life outside of his worth to others.

That also comes back to the Glen thing (you see it most strongly in Gil) because the whole process is to convince the person in question they shouldn’t be allowed agency or allowed to want things for themselves. They’re all very deliberately taught that they have no worth outside of their “Master” (when first taught this it’s Glen [as the mouthpiece of the Jury] but the clear implication is that it eventually switches to the Jury itself) because it’s easy to continue the self destructive, oppressive structures Glen is made to enforce if Glen feels he has no power to end them. This feeling still exists without the Jury’s direct intervention, though, because of how being Glen also attracts misfortune to one’s person. Leo sooner convinced himself he was insane than start meaningful conflict with Elliot because he felt he had no place as an active participant in his reality.

And then there’s the whole matter of Leo’s feelings for Elliot being compared to Vincent’s feelings for Gil ad NO. LEO’S FEELINGS FOR ELLIOT WERE NOT UNHEALTHY ON THE LEVEL THAT VINCENT’S FEELINGS FOR GIL WERE, but the point being made on the whole is that obsession with another person without any sort of self worth is analogous to suicide. Ultimately, Leo’s love for Elliot came from a genuine respect and admiration for him as a person, and I don’t want to imply that it’s on the level of Vincent’s feelings for Gil, which are themselves an act of self harm. It’s just... the very obvious conclusion trying to be communicated is that Leo’s obsession with Elliot after his death was unhealthy and self destructive.

Elliot and Leo’s relationship definitely wasn’t inherently unhealthy. It was built on mutual respect and admiration and a desire to see the other and be treated as an equal. I just really hate the way the fandom romanticizes Leo’s dependence on Elliot when it’s something the narrative very deliberately condemns.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Wish Leo and Vincent had been shown to actually interact a few more times than they were because their relationship is incredibly important to the both of them but they get like 3 really really intense conversations and nothing else

Okay with all this talk I really just wanted to go off on talking about Jack’s character, mostly surrounding who he was as a person. Which, certainly wasn’t a good person, HE WAS A HORRIBLE PERSON. This is COMPLETELY TRUE, he was a horrible person, using people to make him feel less like an empty soul and more alive, manipulating everyone and throwing lies around to make himself seem better, using people to ultimately achieve what was very very wrong. Say what you want, he is a horrible person, but he is also a very interesting person. Allow me to elaborate. Jack is a character that is very interesting, he creates victims however he was also a victim himself, he is powerful yet also powerless, he knows what he wants yet he is also lost to what that is. He takes whatever he can get and tries to mold it into some sort of person he can be, various of times in the story, when we are given insight on Jack, many times he tells us that he is not sure who exactly he is. That he has pretended for so long that he just doesn’t know what is true about him and what is made up, his mind has basically erased that line between the two, making it impossible for even him to understand what is easy for many people to understand. The few times he is shown true emotion, is defeat, shock, and anger. All his happiness and surrounding positive emotions can be classified as “pretend”, even with Laice. The only person that made him feel alive, but not due to happiness, but rather an obsession and anger. Anger that Lacie just had to be the one to make him continue living, yet this obsession almost wanted more of that, a reason to live, despite Jack not WANTING TO LIVE.

Which can be explained, as his childhood was of great poverty. Living with abusive mother and eventually taking to the streets to basically die in the cold, seeing as the scene when Lacie and Jack first met. Later after the meeting, Jack is shown both possibly killing people, stealing, and selling his body or services to various people of high nobility. Least to say he had a shitty life that left him with such deep mental scars that could never recover from the damage of never knowing what true affection nor true feelings other than negative. And by the time Lacie had found him, Jack had already begun using “fake smiles” to pretend, therefore twisting his personality more into his adulthood, and nearing when he got into Vessalius Household was he completely drowned in his own mask that he couldn’t pick up which one was his real face anymore.

It’s a sad reality that Jack was really a twisted soul from the very beginning due to how he was raised, along with the events that followed to meeting Lacie. A relationship that is anything but healthy. And coming in contact with the Baskerville certainly wasn’t helpful, thinking of it, Jack was really that uncaring to himself that he was willing to THROW HIMSELF OFF LACIE’S TOWER if just to prove a point Lacie had made about Oswald!!! I personally feel like it was only around Lacie, where the fake emotions of happiness seemed the strongest, making him want to desperately believe they were the real thing, when in reality, his real self had been destroyed long ago. His own emotions were so distorted that hell, when Oz showed Jack Lacie’s memories, he convinced himself what he needed to do with what Levi had previously told him about Alice and the world of Chains, it basically sealed the entire deal of the tragedy. 

And finally, going into the post-tragedy, it is told that with his shattered soul, the more that Jack’s body would reverse and change, the more he lost himself, or lost his soul. The reason why Oz had been able to take over control of the body to begin with, Jack during the current timeline was nothing more than a husk of what he was, he is basically the remains of all the negative emotions that built up. Obsession, anger, want, longing, and there was really nothing left of the man. And that is exactly the words Oscar uses to Jack,

Jack is nothing. He is like water slipping through someones hands, and sadly no one shall be able to make anything from a man of nothing

Hello! Love your meta of Vanitas no Carte. I have been wanting to ask you if you think there's similarities in the mysterious portrayal of Teacher and Blue Moon Vanitas to that of Jack and Glen/Oswald respectively in the first half of Pandora Hearts. Do you think they will share similar roles too in that case?

Hmm, this is an interesting comparison! Let’s consider what we know about all four characters first and then look at the role they’re currently serving in the series.

Teacher is an aristocrat with ties to the queen directly. He served under her first and for the longest in a very public role even though we also know he’s the kind of person who likes to maintain some kind of anonymity judging by how he always changes his name and, presumably, his appearance. He’s also rarely at home and prefers to travel.

VotBM is someone we know even less about. She was an outcast because she was born under the blue moon. She rescued Vanitas and Misha and raised them and taught them for a time. She marked Vanitas (and most likely Misha), which allows him to use The Book of Vanitas. There are numerous legends about her and her book, which is revealed to us at the very start of the series. Vanitas hates her.

Teacher and VotBM haven’t interacted with each other whatsoever so far.

Now let’s take a look at what we know about Jack and Oswald, who we know substantially more about.

Jack essentially grew up as an urchin. His mother despised him (and also died while waiting for his father to return), he had no desire to live until he met Lacie, and after that did everything in his power to meet her again, including prostitution and rejoining the aristocracy under his father’s name. Jack was often compared to “water.” He had no clear sense of self and molded himself to circumstances as they arose.

Oswald joined the aristocracy at a young age, but he was also something of an outcast as a Baskerville. He was devoted utterly to his sister, Lacie. He trusted Jack even though he could tell there was something wrong with him. He was willing to do his duty no matter how high the cost to himself personally or to others. 

He and Jack were very close to one another even though Jack himself didn’t realize this until it was too late and Oswald regretted it immensely.

That’s a quick summary of the four, but what about the roles they’re playing?

I’m going to start with Jack because his role is the one we learned about the most throughout Pandora Hearts. Jack was originally considered a hero but he was duplicitous to his core. Ultimately, Jack was the villain of the series surpassed only by the Jury. It was due to his actions that so many people died, that so many people continued to suffer to the present day. He broke the story the Jury had intended and eventually became nothing more than a husk. His role started out as mentor and went downhill all the way to obsessive-compulsive villain.

Oswald’s role was that of a fallen leader. He was presumed to be the villain, but he ended up being a tragic anti-hero. He lost everything including his own soul in an effort to fix that which couldn’t be fixed.

Both characters guided others at some point in the series and were also misunderstood throughout.

Okay, so now let’s finally get to the heart of this question: will VotBM and Teacher serve a similar role?

I’m going to say “somewhat.” We don’t know enough about either of them to really say for sure, but I would say there are some marked similarities.

Teacher and VotBM have both shaped major events just like Oswald and Jack did. They’ve both instructed younger individuals and influenced them immensely. They are both almost definitely misunderstood. Noé sees Teacher as a pillar of truth when it seems very likely he’s manipulating Noé in some way and definitely has ulterior motives. VotBM is hated by Vanitas but every single flashback we have of her shows her to be a benevolent (though mysterious) instructor.

If we follow this to it’s conclusion, VotBM would be Oswald in this scenario (the good guy who has been vilified unfairly) while Teacher is Jack (the wolf in sheep’s clothing).

Of course, VotBM and Teacher aren’t friends or even acquaintances (unless my crack theory about them being Noé’s parents turn out to be true...), so that’s a major difference as is the setting they’re appearing in. But they could very well serve somewhat similar functions as Oswald and Jack did in Pandora Hearts.

Character in general: LACIE BASKERVILLE IS A QUEEN - on a more serious note, there’s always been... something i didn’t like about lacie. i always thought her too cold, too detached from others and her emotions, even if there are reasons behind her behavior. like every character in ph she is deeply flawed, but that’s why this manga is so beautiful and still so important to me even if i’m not that much into manga anymore. personality-wise i’m not fond of her, but character-wise she is such a good character. 

How they play them: you were one of the people i wrote with last time i revamped my leo blog, and i feel in complete love with your lacie. you capture her at perfection, all the different hues of her personality, her complexity, just... wow. i still read a reply or two of yours when they show up on my dash. i remember that we had a thread in my modern verse for leo where lacie is his mother, and every once in a while i think back about it because it was such a warm and comfy interaction. i keep saying that i’ll revamp leo again and come back to the fandom, but even if i never do it’s nice to know there’s still someone i’ll love writing with if i go back!

Favorite character: ugh it’s SO HARD, but I’ll go with the Main Trio, because they are soft and give me warm feelings! I love how all of them are struggling with memory loss and trauma, and how differently they fight it. They aren’t perfect, but they mean so much. Honorable mentions are Vincent and Lacie, far more problematic characters. but also the ones I relate to the most in some weird way.

Least Favorite character: Idk, like, Miranda? I still don’t get why she wanted Oswald’s head?? was she just real crazy??? that it?????

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Oswald/Jack (husbands!), Elliot/Leo (boyfriends!!), Oz/Gilbert (lovers... not in the part where Oz is 15 though. I’m generally keeping an opinion that Oz is an eldritch bunny monster so age doesn’t matter that much in his case, but before he regains his memories even he doesn’t know that. Gilbert definitely doesn’t, and he’d never go for it with a 15yo), Break/Reim (soft!!) aaaand, ugh, Ada/Vanessa (softer!!!!)

Character I find most attractive: ♥Lacie♥ And then after Lacie... Fang!!! Don’t @ me, he’s big and gentle and wields a giant sword, I don’t ask for much in a man. (but also Lacie is like, holy shit, the whole new lvl)

Character I would marry: honestly, Lacie would make a great wife for me because she doesn’t like to be controlled and I don’t like controlling people! This union would probably fuck up my sleep schedule and impulse control, but I’m willing to give it up.  Lacie looks like someone you can just... enjoy the world with, together. Isn’t it a thing to live for?

Character I would be best friends with: probably, like, Lotti? (she’s really cool and we would gossip and bitch about every single one of people we know) 

a random thought: well it’s about Lacie again: I think it’s funny how the manga builds her up. By the time she actually shows up she’s, like, a legend. A secret. A mystery. And it makes her great, but it also kinda fucks her character over (I think it was to keep the mystery and panache that author gave her so many contradictory actions, like developing an empathetic relationship with the formless core of the abyss, but then having her rip human into pieces without second thought and dancing in bloody rain)

An unpopular opinion: Victorian England aestetic? ...way overrated. I know I was all over this shit when I was 13 but now, ugh

My Canon OTP: Jack/Oswald, Elliot/Leo... jokes aside, canon pairings are kinda eh

My Non-canon OTP: look above but also specifically post-canon Gil/Oz/Alice. They have such a great dynamic, I swear, and just re-imagining them in more modern times is so much fuuuun

Most Badass Character: Gilbert. 

Most Epic Villain: Jack (Juries were pretty rad too, esp. theme-wise, but Jack’s betrayal was just so visceral) 

Pairing I am not a fan of: Break/Sharon

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): the female ones :) (like I’m sorry to say it because a lot of female characters are powerful and cool and have great potential, but their arks just fall flat next to the male character arks. the only exceptions I can think of are Alice and Echo)

Favourite Friendship: Gil and Oz and Alice! But also entire Baskerville family! 

Character I most identify with: probably Alice? I too can be pretty rude and aggressive and absent, but also I’m really emotionally intelligent and honest? I was surprised to recognize this in her, too, but also pleased

Character I wish I could be: Rufus Barma. Reading books... Pretending he’s a weird baloon man... Pining after a more successful woman for decades... dude’s living the life!

Now FENRIS (but I’ll try to keep it short!)

How I feel about this character: he’s great! I think he stands for very important topics, my fave being relationship to the kind of people who traumatized you. Not, like, the person, but the people. This extrapolation happens a lot in real life, and I don’t see it addressed enough in media? I also like that his personal ark (best case scenario) doesn’t end in just learning to see a person beyond just being a mage or not, or just in a death of his former master, or in acceptance of mages as a whole. He actually goes and fights the problematic people. Physically. What an icon! 

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: mostly just Hawke

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: w Isabella! I don’t think they can really develop romantic thing, but their friendship (even with benefits) is so sweet!

My unpopular opinion about this character: ...I honestly don’t know what’s popular, and feel like a grandma about it

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: better relationship with Anders, duh. Like, I know I just said his hatred for mages is kinda cool narrative-wise. But hanging out with someone for 6 years and not being able to empathize with them even a little? really? it just paints them both as really unreasonable. also the constant bickering is kinda annoying. 

Favorite friendship for this character: Bella! but also, you know, the whole Hawke-crew is one big family and I live for that

Another year and March 18th comes up again. I can’t believe it has already been 4 years since this cruel, ridiculous, beautiful story ended, that defined my life so much back then and still does til today. I will never forget those incredible characters and plot twists, the tea parties and tragedies. And I will never forget the monthly heartbreak of the fandom, every time a new chapter aired. We survived the truth about Oz, the loss of Elliot, Break and Oscar, while each time recommending therapy for all of us. 

I will never forget those days of happiness and sadness, and the PH fandom will always hold a place in my heart. So thank you again, Mochijun for creating this wonderful story, that brought us all together.

1] Lottie's real character

—is not the whole 'bloodlusty-sadistic-femme-fatale' persona she puts up but something close to this—

—the moment she sees a strange ragged child, a newcomer to her house on top of that, her first instinct is to go: "oh no, you are so dirty... come over here I will clean you all up."

then she goes on to console Lily for everything that happened in her life and explains why none of it was her fault—

Everyone here's gone through similar trials... but at the same time, it warps 'something' in people around you.

I am so curious about Lottie's past (on one hand, I am sad I won't ever have an answer; on the other I am happy bc I can make up whatever backstory I want for her!) because she says this as a matter-of-fact, like she (and everyone there) has experienced her share of trauma and abuse so can easily relate to Lily (also, please look at Lily's cute little adoring this-lady-is-so-cool face and her round, neatly combed mop of hair lol)

Lottie is a caring, motherly, nurturing person from her heart. This isn't even big-sisterly; she just straight up adopts a child that appeared at her doorsteps. At first, I thought her sweet character got warped after her traumatic experiences from the Tragedy of Sablier, but actually no. She still is the same, she simply suppresses it for the sake of her persona.

Because, here in Retrace 34, her first instinct on seeing Vincent beat up Echo was to confront him about it:

and she gets angry too when Vincent very coolly replies that he was taking out his pent up frustration on Echo.

However, then, she slowly relents, probably making up her mind not to interfere any more in his personal business because it was doubtless more important to keep Vincent on their side than making an enemy out of him.

annnd yet, she still voluntarily offers to accompany Zwei on her assigned mission to Sablier. because she is worried about her running off somewhere by herself. Practically a mom, I am telling you

and yeah, something else to add on here: the reason I say her Sadistic Sexy Girl persona is fake,, because she doesn't seem to enjoy the attention men 'give' her at all. two times iirc: when Vincent and Break grope at her without her proper consent, she appears highly uncomfortable. (or, it could only be dubcon at the best ig (also see: Lacie who was requested for her 'permission' in Glen's 'experiment' by the Glen himself. It is mentioned time and again that Baskervilles' can't go against the Glen's wishes,, implying her 'permission' was merely a formality))

See this, her first instinct is to irritably slap away Vincent's hand when he so much as touches her hair (Retrace 34):

But Vincent ignores her and continues to grope at her body.... with her finally giving in. Or rather, she was shown to be very shocked and annoyed all of those three panels before she abruptly switches to her 'sadist' persona.

With Break, I don't know how she would have reacted if he pressed on but since he pulled away, she went from being annoyed and uncomfortable to ending up more confused about what was going on (Retrace 41)

on the whole, I feel like on returning from the Abyss after a hundred years and finding that the Baskervilles had been replaced in the society and condemned to being barbarians and mass murderers, the survivors had to obviously collect more information about what really had happened. They had to find their master Glen as well. Hence, she assumed this persona to achieve her objectives—using her face and body to lure in possible informants. Also, when she needs to interrogate 'weaker' men, she simply uses it to scare them and get what she wants (sorry Oz, don't mean to dunk on you but you are the example here lmao). Like how Break clowns around so that people don't take him seriously. but.... that's not what she is, nowhere near what she is, and that's why she is so uncomfortable when men voluntarily make advances at her.

2] Lottie's smart observations

—because, many a time, it's because of her observations I started to think in an entirely new track.

in fact, the first time I started to pay closer attention to Jack's words is because of this panel (Retrace 27)—

Till then, I simply took it for granted that Jack Vessalius was a celebrated war hero, that Glen Baskerville was the one that caused the massacre which Jack put a stop to by killing his friend etc. etc.

But when Lottie pointed this out, I started to wonder if there was indeed something more to the whole Tragedy than that meets the eye. Well, honestly, calling a war hero a hero is in itself not all right but now when I realize what Jack was actually up to, it doesn't surprise me that he had no proper answer to Lottie's accusation here. He simply scares her off saying the Baskervilles won't be any match to B-Rabbit, to which, at the time I was reading this chapter, I went— okaaay? and what's that to do anything with anything?

He doesn't answer anything with regards to Glen because, apparently, he was trying to protect his dear friend's honor (bullshit); he says this to Glen's loyal followers as if they are gonna desert Glen or something. They stayed and still searched for him even after he gave the orders to kill everyone in Sablier so Jack, what's your point?

Next is here (Retrace 46)—

the first time I read this statement, do you know my mind directly went: oh, does this mean Vincent is the Head Hunter? Because if the Baskervilles don't know who the Head Hunter is but she is helping them out (in other words, in league with them), won't this narrow it down to Vincent? plus, he did kill Phillipe's dad (within the excuse of not wanting him to be dragged into the Abyss) with the chain which had connections to the Head Hunter case they were investigating.

But then, Vincent went on to say the Head Hunter attacked Gil too (which he couldn't have possibly done), and that he would be the one to slay her, and.... I entirely dropped that line of thought. Afterward, we went through the whole seesaw of whether or not Elliot is the Head Hunter to finally getting revealed Vincent was the true Head Hunter after all and I was like: ah, my first hunch was right after all... (ノへ￣、)

In the same chapter, here too:

Vincent (who is one of the smartest characters in the story) commends her on picking up things super fast. So does Break when she directly questions him about his words from the other day (Retrace 52):

Next, this one might be a bit of a weak argument but I think, of all people, it was only Charlotte who never fell for Jack's charms. In her past memories, it is shown that she didn't trust him at all. He enraged her, in fact. Yes, this whole scene is played off for gags but.... tl;dr, is that she questions him every time he enters their mansion without any particular permission or intention (Retrace 27)

and see here too:

She is shocked when she comes to know that Glen had let in Jack, an outsider, on to their secrets. Well, we have Jack here denying that he was at all interested in Glen's affairs but we later on realize that was not the case. That Jack was very much interested in Glen's affairs. So, Lottie's instincts ring true every time,,

(I was wondering why Lottie didn't know Jack at all since that guy has been loitering around the Baskerville Mansion since forever but that too was explained. she became a Baskerville after Lacie was cast into the Abyss, Oswald became Glen and Jack fell into his depression.)

but here, here (Retrace 87) can we talk about how smart Lottie is in this scene? (I love you, Break! but this post is about Lottie so I am gonna leave you out; I have made a separate post for you and your badass ways so there, there,)

Had it not been for Shirley, Break might have lost here, died even,, because what she says is right. He is fighting but he has not at all healed from his previous injuries (which, thanks to Vincent, got aggravated, seriously what's the sewer rat's problem?!),, so he is fighting for and with his life. Using his chain only adds to burden that his body can't take. lol, and so what a simple logic she uses-- just stay away from him by a certain distance, out of Mad Hatter's range and don't throw your chains against it either. He would self-destruct by himself ;-; Break looks so annoyed here, he must have realized that her logic would work.

3] Lottie is NOT a blind, stupid Glen fangirl/follower

As I mentioned in the 2 section, she is the only one that questions the intentions of Glen-sama's 'one and only friend' Jack who loiters about the Baskerville grounds for a lot of no reason;

similarly, she is the one who first hesitates at Oswald/Glen's actions after his taking over Leo's body and on a regret-fuelled warpath of probably more disastrous outcomes from changing the past than the Tragedy of Sablier.

Look at her, she is horrified at the way Glen killed that man, even skewering a sword through his mouth in his last moments (Retrace 81):

Yes, it is true that Pandora can not be easily cleansed of their brainwashing by Jack and misunderstanding of the Tragedy of Sablier but.... this was too ruthless and too cruel a murder of an innocent person. I think this is the first time she starts to question if Glen was really doing the right thing. (Even, I wonder if she gets flashbacks to the Tragedy of Sablier like Vincent bc she looks visibly shaken here)

Also, back in Retrace 79, she is right by Glen's side and even comically annoyed at Gil and Oz's escape and at Rufus for hiding while Raven attacked the place, so it didn't seem like she was questioning Glen at the time. Maybe, her first instance of hesitation was at Glen's immediate decision to get Gil killed, Gil who is one of them and was once Glen's valet. I don't know but she did seem to me to be a lot shaken there as well.

And not only now, back then, too. A 100 years ago. Yes, in front of Glen, it was Fang who openly questioned Glen's decision to kill all humans in and around Sablier but Lottie too was equally shocked to hear it (Retrace 27)

(Well, back then, it is true Oswald had no choice but to go ahead with killing all humans to save them from breaking away from the 100-years cycle or getting turned into chains (although I am writing a post on how a lot of the tragedy could have been avoided had he not been so passive; when I finish, I will link it here) but not in the present.)

Back to Lottie--

In the previous chapter (Retrace 26), she tells Oz that Glen's orders are absolute and the Baskervilles are 'built' to obey them. Her mannerisms show us (and Oz) that she has no remorse in killing all those people and is, in fact, super gleeful about the massacre and the role she played in it ("Aah, it feels like only yesterday", she says, as if she is nostalgic and thirsty for more bloodshed.)

However, this.... is all a huge lie.

Maybe, she thinks it will be easier to get an answer out of a hostage if she behaves cruel and threatening. Maybe, she is trying to hide her own regrets and guilt by putting up the mask of a psychopathic killer. Maybe, she feels there is no point in trying to justify their actions from a 100-years ago (something the Baskervilles themselves don't understand properly) to the citizens in the present, because, no matter what, they won't understand their stance and look upon them as barbarians and murderers, so it'd be as well to accept it.

Whatever be the case, the truth is: (Retrace 98)

What is this...? What exactly have we gotten ourselves into....?!

Lottie scolds Fang for even harboring a thought like one of their family has turned traitor, ultimately breaks down and cries in his arms. Plus, the Baskervilles themselves were scared of Jack and his chain-killing-chain (they didn't know it was Jack at the time) but they knew that someone, a human contractor or maybe one among themselves, had turned on them. Fang was so relieved to see Lottie alive. He feared she too might have fallen at the hands of the traitor, who had killed off many of the almost immortal Baskervilles assigned to be the messengers to and from Glen. I suppose had those messengers managed to reach Lottie and co., they would have known the real reason behind Glen's orders to kill the humans (if you see Retrace 74-pg. 29 (not adding that panel too) Glen does explain his decision to a red-hooded Baskerville, who I presume was killed by Jack on their way to the others)

Having said all this, I can't not add this panel bc this too is canon *face palm*

4] Lottie's views on living and death

This is a bit difficult to explain but there's a lot of stuff about this in spite of her few appearances (gotta read between the lines), so let's start with this panel:

while reading this for the first time, I thought she is talking about the Tragedy of Sablier. I am not so sure now. Because, although they killed lots of people, it was not for their own gain at all. It was to save those people from a fate worse than death. But, in this chapter (Retrace 25), Lottie doesn't yet know why Glen had asked them to commit the massacre so.... she must have bought the common (Jack-fed) tale that Glen wanted the Intention of the Abyss for his own gain. In a way, she is still trying to convince herself that their crimes on that fateful day were justified.

It's impossible to keep on living without hurting anybody, okay?

What I mean is this should be her own idea of life—that living is cut-throat and unfair. If we simply do nothing, then others will trample all over us and use us to achieve their own goals. Even if we try to live a life without hurting others, the same need not always be reciprocated. (which is exactly what went down between Jack and Glen jkjkgsjk but Lottie doesn't know lol)

I feel like the whole conversation hints more at her past than her days with the Baskervilles, because, even prior to that, the topic she was discussing with Oz... had nothing to do with the Baskervilles or the Tragedy. She was merely curious why Oz surrendered so fast when Ada was with him and why he wasn't fighting back right now. Thinking about it, Oz underwent a tremendous character development from a This-is-Fine, If-I-do-Nothing-I-will-be-Fine attitude to actively fighting back for his friends and family. Retrace 82, when he finally wrestles the control out of Jack's hands in spite of his constant taunting that nothing could belong to someone like Oz. In a way, he did take Lottie's advice and act upon it.

Lottie has the right hunch about most things. Remember this scene (Retrace 75):

I wonder what her life before joining the Baskervilles was like because she sure has tons of worldly experience and can easily see through people. Just like that, she offers words and advice that people (here, Oz) needed to hear.

I believe this is also the reason why her reaction to Break was quite... different compared to little Lily's outburst whenever she spotted him that they gotta kill him and get revenge for Fang.

For one, yes, she knows Fang passed with a smile on his face and was freed from his burden. She was relieved for him. But I also think she doesn't want revenge on Break because of this very principle of life. Fang died protecting Lily. It was a fair fight, a fight for life where if one even slightly falters, they are gonna get killed. It was not like Break had an advantage there; it was not like Fang was gonna go easy on Break had he given in or something,, (compared to Glen's killing of those Pandora men, where he had an overwhelming powerful chain, ig those men were mostly unarmed too idk)

And of all people, it was Lottie who finally ended that cycle of vengeance that started with Reim and Lily. Remember how it went?

Lily kills two of Reim's companions -> Reim seeks revenge and shoots Lily in the head -> Lily didn't die instead she attacks Reim -> Break arrives at the spot (coz of Vincent), jumps to conclusion that Reim is dead and seeks revenge -> in the fight that ensues Fang dies and Break gets grievously injured -> Lily wants revenge for Fang (in the meantime, Vincent reopens Break's half-healed wound from then) -> in the fight between Break and the Baskervilles, he gets even more exhausted bc of his chain (the reason he went all out was for Sharon getting slightly hit in the head btw) -> finally, Break dies but Lily isn't satisfied, she wants to cut up his body -> Reim offers her to shoot him instead bc he was the one that started it in the first place

Had Lily killed Reim here, this cycle could have gone on forever (maybe, Sharon might seek revenge next lol)

side note: from this, I realize that Break acts a lot more out of emotion than Lottie; Fang was equally important to Lottie like Reim or Sharon were to Break. Yet, she decided to put an end to the cycle of vengeance and accept Reim's offered hand of friendship. Supposing if Reim and Fang were the ones that died back then and Break lived in the end, would he have agreed to ally with the Baskervilles? I doubt...? (Another thought with no real proof is that she'd already been thinking of working with the protagonists ever since Break asked of her (remember, she was the one curious about his words) but that's a topic for another post ghjshgjs I promise it won't be shippy lol)

Back to the topic, I am genuinely surprised that she didn't hold the slightest grudge against Break. I understand allying with the protagonists for they are pursuing the same goal but she really didn't have to stop and say such a sweet prayer for his soul, a man who killed her friend after all:

May your soul return to this Earth.... once it has completed its hundred years cycle.

She is promising him to see Oz and the others through to the end in his place! Something he was regretting at the very brink of death, that he didn't have it in him anymore to continue on the path with them,, so whether he can or not hear her, this sure was a reassurance he needed to hear. (As I said before, she just..... knows what to say, she can easily see through people but I don't think it is appreciated enough ;_;)

And here comes in her views of death and the Hundred Years cycle (reincarnation) of the soul, something she takes very seriously (she should, considering they are the servants of the Abyss) and I believe she is of the view that demise needs to be respected, no matter friend or enemy. Now, do you see why she was so horrified at Glen stabbing a sword through the man's throat while he lay there dying? A close example I can give is that of Chuuya from BSD rebuking Dazai for shooting bullets at a corpse. They might have killed lots but they still know to respect the dead/dying.

This went so long--and I will go on and on about Lottie lol (I even reached the 30 image limit ig idk) so I will end here with Charlotte reconciling with her master and assuring him that she will support Leo in his place. This is the first time she has visible tears in her eyes:

1: How long have you been in the fandom?

One year? Six months? I don’t know, not too long, I’m new to hell.

2: Favorite character?

Well I have different kinds of favorites to be honest. There’s the story-wise favorites, those characters I enjoy reading about, that I love as people, that make me happy when they appear and whose appearance I always look forward to. And then there’s the meta-level favorites, who are characters I enjoy thinking about, writing about, analyzing, that I appreciate as characters inside a story. Of course, I love all characters on both levels, but not equally as there are some I enjoy more than others in one perspective and inversely in the other.

So on a story level it’s Ada Vessalius, then Break or Oscar. And on a meta level it’d be a tie between Jack and Oswald (well not exactly a tie, more like different phases where one of them gets the first spot haha yeah I’m dreading question)

Lacie, or Levi.

17: Saddest character death in my opinion?

Oswald’s. I didn’t cry actually, I didn’t feel a great lot at his death, in fact the one death that shattered me emotionally was Break’s. But you know, for Break it wasn’t sad as much as it was moving. There were strong emotions, there was sadness, but ultimately it was a beautiful way to go, it was bittersweet, it was epic, sincere words were exchanged, positive and peaceful thoughts were left, and his last words were Shelly-sama, I could cry again just remembering it but it couldn’t have been handled better,  it… wasn’t sad? It was powerful.

Oswald on the other hand just, disappeared, forever, lost everything, blamed himself for everything, it’s just… STOP BEING SUCH A GREEK TRAGEDY CHARACTER YOU FOOL! Of course, there was something positive in the fact that he understood that his time was over and the current issues were not his to deal with, while encouraging the Baskervilles to support Leo in the future… But that’s still sad?

Alternatively, Jun saying about Jack’s death “him disappearing without a trace while being the only one who didn’t realize anything is the most typical of him” just made me feel empty inside haha.

18: Do I hate or like Jack?

Okay this is funny but Jack was a character I really didn’t care about when we thought he was good (sometimes he’d even annoy me by taking Gil’s attention from Oz and I couldn’t care less about the 100 years ago story (the irony…) ), but then, when we learned the truth I suddenly took on my villain apologist cape and started proclaiming to whoever was willing to listen that Jack is deep down a really nice guy and that he was just set on the wrong path by his mistakes and bad circumstances.

Where lies the logic in here? Who know, not me.

21: Who would I cosplay as?

Alyss, Ada, Break, or one of the past team I guess :D.

23: Moments that made me cry?

So many. Elliot’s death, Oscar’s death, Break’s death, Zai’s death, Oz’s death, the Unbirthdays, …

I don’t think I can compare them, Break and Oscar are those that touched me the most, Elliot was so shocking I didn’t want to believe it, and Oz’s left me crying until the Epilogue, but the one that made me cry the hardest is Zai’s death. You know already that I’m an irrational person, and I probably wasn’t all that sad for the dead character, really, but I was really moved by so many elements in that scene, and in so many different ways. Oz’s pain was so tangible, the revelation of Zai’s “sad and lonely” eyes, the power of the moment where Oz looked in his eyes for the first time, the ultimate curse he left him with, and most of all, Ada’s clueless expression as she woke up, unaware that she just lost her asshole father who was still her father and still had the instinct to protect her even if he was lost to his hatred and sadness. “Brother, were you crying?” honestly that made me cry twice as hard.

Aaaaaah I’m so conflicted! On the one hand I really love Gil and Vince has some creepy side, on the other hand I love Vincent’s writing so much??

I guess Gil on a story level and Vincent on a meta level because I seem to be making this sub-choices a lot to make myself feel better.

28: Echo or Noise?

Echo, but Noise was enjoyable in the end :3.

31: Opinion on Elleo?

Honestly for some reason I never thought about shipping them when I was reading the manga because they’re so clearly the number 1 to each other to a level of obsession anyway, so it felt pointless to ship it xD. I usually need some level of ambiguity to care a lot about a ship, and a level of confirmed canon potential because I wouldn’t see it otherwise. On the other hand they rank pretty high on the “ship with a terribly tragic twist” scale and I’m love those

tl;dr elleo is absolutely awesome but too canon for me to focus on xD.

32: Jack or Oswald?

Honestly I like more Oswald as a character (design, personality and stuff) but I feel Jack’s writing is more compelling. And in terms of choosing between them, my opinions change so often that I can’t give an answer that will last.

For what it’s worth I’ll say Oswald today. Might very well be Jack tomorrow, or in a bit, idk.

33: Elliot or Leo?

Elliot. I’m sorry Leo, ily too tho :’(.

This is really hard tbh, canon definitely treated Ozbert better, with a long development and heavy subtext, while Elleo was given huge potential but left for the reader to develop. I think I’d take Ozbert because that was the first thing I ever shipped while reading this manga so :’).

35: Humpty Dumpty or the Queen of Hearts?

I ship it.

Oh wait, we had to choose. Well, both are on very huge degrees of nope. Humpty has that cool concept of contracting so many people at once and messing with you and that’s really typical of something born from Levi. On the other hand Demios creeped me out so much but led to Vincent moving on and stuff and cut Ada’s beautiful hair and made me lose my mind with angst…

Well I’ll go with Queen of Hearts.

36: Favorite character backstory?

I won’t be really original here, I’ll say Break. Even though it happened pretty early in the series, it was very well handled, advanced the plot a bit, developed the character and his motivation, and it contained a good balance of tragedy/regrets in the past and lesson learnt/acceptance from friends in the present. Plus it was told all at once, covered so many issues and conveyed some of the series’ most powerful messages.

Oz. I’m still not over it, he should’ve lived and grew up (even in that weird body), and learned how to use a camera and somehow had a tea party between survivors, and then lived happily with Gil and Ada and Alice if she’s alive too :’(.

It was epic seeing Break lose it and go into full murder mode. I don’t regret it. Although in the end, it kind of lost its impact by the fact that he wasn’t dead for real but it’s still good he survived!

I actually kind of got spoiled Gilbert losing his arm :’(. But the way he lost it still managed to surprise me and get to me, and I literally had to get away from the manga and go do something to make the feels go at that scene where an arm-less Gil saved Oz from Oswald. I was so excited! haha

I mean it’s sad but it was handled with such epicness that I accepted it quite easily :’) (but then Jun had to go and remind us that he’d need to learn how to cook with one arm and stuff)

Unless you’re talking about Leo’s arm that got cut by Break in which case blame Oswald, Leo you can sue him it’s your body and he damaged it gdi. Oh wait you can’t he’s dead for good :’(

I’d say the anime AND the manga :D. The anime has some great music and acting, and I don’t hate the art, but the manga is complete, with a brilliant plot and brilliant character development and gorgeous art. So of course if I have to discard one of them it’d be the anime because at least I get to know the end with the manga (but then is this what I really wish for haha), but the anime is a lovely piece of art as well!

The simple he was at first, starting off as a minor character and growing to a major, presenting his depression-based up character from the start. He was cursed, but not like the Children of Misfortunes He had a big role despite how small he was. Then lost his world what was based on Elliot’s acceptance and kindness, the only one who hadn’t judged him. I’m just so close-knitted to this character, I can’t explain and I may sound over-dramatic..

But I love all of the children, can relate and understand more of them

Elliot, without doubt. It happened with a well-built frame: self-critique. He just died with the moral conception what he denied, and with this denial he accepted it finally, along with Oz’s conception. Sadly, it was lethal.

This character was swaying vividly on my spectrum of hate and sympathy. I had a crush on him, but when I’ve found out that he is the actual cause of all shit, it was a great shock for me. Yet when I’ve got to know how his twisted mind became how it is, I was rather pitying him, and judging Lacie. In the end, I have more understanding toward both of them, and I like Jack. Similar feelings went through on me.

And when I lost some of them (some of them for a while, and my love forever), I felt awfully down, and it hurted even more bc comparing it to this manga’s characters and their paths with similar steps. Yet, this cord brought some of us together again. So eventually, I can say that yes, without doubt.

1 + 13: How long have you been in the fandom? + How did I join the fandom?♠ I joined after finishing the series… around a year after it officially ended.

Long story short, Elliot’s death hit me so hard, I ended up ditching the series for several years and even after joining tumblr, I stayed away from the tags/fandom to avoid spoiling myself. But that had some advantages in the long run - I skipped the fandom drama (though from the looks of it, it wasn’t much to begin with) + I didn’t have to wait a month for the most interesting chapters to come out.

That and, well, let’s say rereading the series with a more adult mindset had a lot of benefits.

2: Favorite character?♠ Alyss, very closely followed by Alice.

6: OTP?♠ I didn’t really ship anyone while reading it, but you could say by the end of the series I got pretty invested in Vincent x Ada.

9: Favorite Vessalius?♠ Oz! You might say it doesn’t count, but if Uncle Oscar and Ada consider him their family, your opinion is invalid! (lol, jk, jk)

17: Saddest character death in my opinion?♠ I was going to say Elliot’s one, but after my second revisit, I think Oscars’ death might be the saddest one.

18 + 19: Do I hate or like Jack/Lacie?♠ I like both, but my feelings are kinda… complicated.

Jack was such a pitiful character by the end, I felt bad for enjoying the negative outcomes his own actions brought him (even small things, like Alyss calling Cheshire in her final moments and ignoring him). I pitied him, but I didn’t want him to get a “good ending” (I’m really mean, I know), so I really liked how Jun handled his fate. It was oddly… satisfying.

Lacie on the other hand is a character I never managed to fully understand, which is why I really enjoy reading Jun’s extra comments on her. I’m really tempted to reread the series for a 3rd time, just to focus on her.

20: Opinion on the Baskervilles?♠ Liked them at first as the main villains, and even more so, after the truth behind Sablier was revealed.

1: How long have you been in the fandom? 

uhmm i’m actually not sure…? i’ve only been on tmbl for a bit more than 3 years (although i stalked the PH tmbl fandom since years before i created my acc, every month after a release came here to scream at the new edits ;_;) but when the manga was still running i used to be active in the PH fandom of other sites that no longer exist nowadays. i took various breaks from said fandoms too because the community per se wasn’t that important to me back the day so uhhh i’ve been on and off but kinda for a reasonable amount of time we could say? i’ve never been as close to any kind of ph fandom as i’m now, i always kept some distance12: Headcanons I have?ADA AND SHARON BECAME BEST FRIENDS. they had so much in common and personality-wise and inner strength as well!!! they would make such a great match ;__; 

17: Saddest character death in my opinion?jack’s…. also oswald’s…. also the twins and oz disappearing…. FANG… that was one big betrayal… ;;;;but the one that probably impacted me most was elliot. when he died i was younger and by then he was my fav character sharing the #1 spot with lacie’s tomb and the surrounding mystery. i refused to acknowledge his death when it first happened, but because the manga was monthly i (and all elliot fans lbr) was anxiously clinging onto hope and waiting for the following month wishing that it was just a scare. so when there were no more doubts that he was as dead as one can be it felt like he died for a second time :’) i mourned him so much oh dear..

20: Opinion on the Baskervilles?i LOVE them!!! they have been my favorite house since the minute one and their supremacy in my heart has never wavered. i joined for the mystery, secrets and the dark vibes and i stayed because they delivered ;w; i do wish we had known more things about each member and of the history of the house though.. many of my favorite characters are baskervilles so this also added up, although it is honestly less relevant. their role was right up my alley and they have a lot of, eh, charisma imo?

but.. if i really had to say, i’ve got some bias toward……… alyss :’) maybe a 1% stronger bias than with alice but it’s still here…. since i’m here and to compensate alice, let me ramble about things i love about her!! *w* first and foremost i admire A LOT alice’s strength of spirit and the way she’s able to take difficult decisions with resolution!! giving up is not on her vocabulary and she never lets herself wallow in sadness or gloominess for a long time. she ALWAYS!! gets back on her feet and will try to keep others’ spirits high as well (in her pretty particular ways). i love her passion and courage, she’s one of the most gryffindor characters i’ve ever seen ;;; her heart is just so big and while she can be rash she has no malice ;v; when gilbert apologised to her for the things he told her in the past and she said she didn’t mind because the gilbert who mattered to her was the current one… look…. i was and i still am moved beyond words, this moment meant so much to me ;;;; i also truly value that alyss is the first one listed in her dearests list ;;;; she’s so caring and dedicated to her loved ones ;;;w;;;

30: If I could make two characters interact more, who would they be?

*rolls up sleeves* ada and oz!!!! my beloved siblings… i’ve been wishing for it for a long time but ever since someone made that post about ada having lost all her family + person she loved in a few days that i think about it even more often and with more desperation ;A; they loved each other so much…. THE RELATIONSHIP CHART SAID THEY FELT DEEP AFFECTION FOR EACH OTHER ;;;;A;;;; alyss and alice!!! my beloved twins who loved each other a lot and yet…? ;;; alyss and oz!!! oz and lacie!!!! oswald and lacie!!! alyss-alice-oswald!!! why did alyss dislike oswald? and i sure wish the twins had been able to meet their mom ;;also ada and sharon!!! i think we actually haven’t seen them interact at all but they for sure know about each other if only because they’re from the most powerful dukedoms…?fang-lily-doug-lottie!!! they are an incredible family, i love them so much and i loved every little interaction they had and the way they were so supportive of each other and all took care of lily ;;;;;

THE ALICES!!!! both alice and alyss omg… their story is full of ups and downs and they both suffered a lot and had to take harsh decisions… they didn’t get as much exposure maybe but in hindsight they had a real lot going onand also jack’s! it’s pretty simple in credible as in being the bastard son of a noble, but there was a twisted component about him from the get go that i just can’t help but be very drawn to it… i have a huge soft spot for young jack…and lily’s too ;w;

37: Least favorite character backstory?Hmmm i don’t really have one, but ifd i have to choose i suppose it’d be leo’s? not bad or anything but to me it’s one of the most average in the story

45: NOTP?i’m some ships i’m not too fond of but the only real notp is lacie and levi.since l’m an obvious jacie fan let me clarify that this is not a matter of shipping wars! i don’t think things like “it’s getting on the way of my ship”. actually i’m completely fine with how canon went and i think their relationship was interesting and without levi the twins wouldn’t exist either

i have a complicated relationship with levi, he’s my most disliked character although that’s not to say i hate him or i have particularly bitter feelings. more than anything, i have lots of mixed feelings regarding him and i’ve gone through many levi phases. the fact that the moment he appeared became my 3rd fav chara in ph is pretty indicative, imo. and he stayed in that spot for a long time, too.. but not even then did i ship him with lacie. i just don’t see the relationship this way from lacie’s side and her pov is the one that matters to me + she’s my favorite character so i can’t bring myself to pair her with someone i don’t have the same amount of love for, let alone one for whom i feel so complicated.

46: Favorite AU?MAGICAL GIRL LACIE!!!!! i wish mochijun had done an omake chapter or smth about it, it was too good??? those pages talking about that nonexistent anime are among my favs of side ph material, i’d give all my money to see more of it!! plus the pandora girls seemed to appear more and they pretty much have the monopoly of my ph top ;w; aaand also the ph gakuen? or how was it named? where the characters were in university, jack wore those horrible clothes (dungarees?) yet looked adorable & also wore one of the loveliest smiles mochijun ever drew on him and lacie looked graceful and wonderful as ever ada and sharon becoming best friends who lost so many peaple dear to them and maybe even living together. my sunshines… ;v;

If you were removed in error, please simply send a re-application message. Several different people work on the activity checks, so it’s possible there are mistakes! If this happens to you, you will be able to keep everything you previously had, you just may be placed in a different residence.

Our general activity rules regarding checks are as follows:
