having a moment about how syaoran raises his son tsubasa to be the kind of person who shows immense kindness and understanding to the world around him which of course in turn leads to tsubasa giving syaoran a soul in the hope he would develop its own and this act of kindness snowballing into syaoran defying his own purpose as a clone and choosing love over his primary directive and then syaoran and gets revived and is tsubasa’s dad and the cycle repeats bc love begets love begets love

a big part of tsubasa reservoir chronicle is the fact that none of the main characters are using their real names (which I think can be also attributed to fei wang as he’s presumably an extension of clow, which is Pretty Neat). in general deception is a major aspect of the storyline but ultimately what I’ve always taken away from trc is that identity does not equate to a name. over and over again we watch these characters fall in love with each other (in a platonic and romantic sense) even though NONE of them are *truly* real, because who they are is made up of each other. All six protagonists (if you count c!sakura/c!syaoran as being meaningfully separate which. duh) find their meaning and identity NOT through the names they are Given (what has been placed upon them) but through their experiences being surrounded by other people, because ultimately what all these characters need to Learn is that they above all else are people capable of both love and more importantly Change. They are all by the end made up of the memories they hold with each other.

sakura and syaoran’s recurring inability to embrace/touch/connect and how it goes from symbolizing fear and loss into one of trust and love—“oh god what if I lose you” to “I trust you to one day return.”

that c!syaoran could not be “saved” by fai in tokyo is reflected in how he tries to do so—fai is a character who is simultaneously repulsed by and desperate for connection with others and that manifests there in his use of his power, his magic, his utility that he has completely defined himself by. to save him, fai would have needed to allow himself to be vulnerable….which at this point in the story he’s absolutely not. trc is a narrative about bonds��how the people around you and the relationships you build are what makes a person. fai could never have saved syaoran here bc he would have needed to convey to syaoran how much he cared for him, which in turn would have required fai to be a person who actually exists who has Human Emotions…..which he doesn’t get to until post-Celes.

kurogane like….tries? he makes a solid effort but it’s largely focused around berating syaoran for trying to kill fai, arguing that fai cared for him—which we as the audience know to be true but that fai has expressly failed to convey. kurogane at this point also is terrified of emotional vulnerability but in the complete opposite direction.

and c!sakura…well, she’s asleep for most of it. lol. but regardless, trc is ALSO a story about identity. trc places significant weight on its characters existences—they are not DEFINED by their existence, per se, and the narrative dissuades such concepts of social/biological determinism, but it’s very telling that each of the main characters must return home in order to complete their major emotional arc—because their past and existence cannot be ignored in determining what they are, in order to understand and form the bonds they seek. anyways, this relates to sakura here because she still is unaware of her existence as a clone. sakura as she is in tokyo CANNOT know herself bc she is still in the dark about who she is and why she was created. she cannot reach syaoran (there’s another post I want to make about sakura/syaoran and their symbolism of never being able to touch buuut) and we really see that after c!syaoran takes off the rest of tokyo is sakura trying to figure herself out, be a more active force in her own life.
