Something Iā€™ve always liked about Lab Rats, even back when it first aired, is how untraditional the family structure is. Not only is the family a mixed race, but is also blended family.
Once you add the idea of Donald being the biological uncle of Adam, Bree, and Chase it doesnā€™t take away from Donald being the father figure to the trio and they donā€™t start calling Douglas ā€˜Dadā€™. Donald raised them. Douglas even moves in and heā€™s more like uncle to Leo and the trio despite being the biological father. Going even further, Donald is father figure to Leo yet Leo never calls him dad. In fact, the trio doesnā€™t call him dad either. Still itā€™s very clear that Donald is the father figure.
What is even more interesting is how quickly Leo and the trio accept each other as siblings. Itā€™s never step-siblings or adopted siblings, itā€™s always brothers and sister. This happens in like episode 2. The fact that Leo and trio are siblings are never questioned by anyone. Itā€™s just accepted, even the villains.
Tasha from what we see from the show is quick to accept Adam, Bree, and Chase as members of the family. She even seems to pretty okay with Douglas. Granted, she never really interacts with Douglas, but we are never given any reason to think she has any issue with Douglas.
I think Daniel even adds another layer to this messy family. Heā€™s sibling no one knew about, but calls Douglas ā€˜dadā€™. It always felt to me as someone trying really hard to fit in when calls Douglas ā€˜dadā€™. Itā€™s implied that Daniel has an adopted family that he is very close with. Still, everyone just accepts Daniel as family right away. Daniel is interesting, unexplored, and underdeveloped part of the show.
The only person who has an Dooley-Davenport Family as unit is Rose Dooley aka Leoā€™s grandma/Tashaā€™s mom. She doesnā€™t like Donald all that much and seemed a little freaked out by Adam, Bree, and Chase. She never interacted with Douglas as far as I remember(correct me if Iā€™m wrong). The narrative of the show frames this as wrong point of view. Rose is always has to learn the lesson that Donald and the trio are family and good for Tasha and Leo.
The Dooley-Davenport family is messy and confusing from an outsiderā€™s point of view. There are tons of people in real life with confusing family structures like this. Some people are raised by grandparents or uncles or family friends. Sometimes, people can be close to cousins like they are siblings. Families are messy, but thatā€™s okay as long as there is love. Thatā€™s really why Iā€™ve always loved the Dooley-Davenport family itā€™s messy and non-traditional like so many peopleā€™s in real life.

okay so like. lab rats: bionic island is not real, season 4 is the worst one, it's very disorganized, etc etc yes BUT. i think the angst potential of the bionic soldiers was very interesting and so under-explored.
bc like. what the hell happened with all these kids? krane basically just kidnapped them, wiped their memories, and implanted them with bionics, right? and then controlled all of them with the triton app. that's just crazy to me. bc it's like. none of these kids are like adam, bree, and chase at all when it comes down to it. they had actual families. they were not MADE to be bionic. there's a line that i keep thinking about from bob that's like "i keep asking them where they grew up, but they all just say, 'i don't know, i don't remember'!". that's so sad to me. they had families and lives that they just may never find their way back to.
and this all makes it even more depressing that they consider krane their father in bionic rebellion (sebastian especially). these are just random fucking kids. who maybe just got unlucky and were randomly picked by krane to be part of his army, or maybe were chosen for some particular reason (which is honestly kind of worse bc if any of them realized there was actually a reason, that just makes it feel more like it was somehow their fault even though it wasn't). but in the end none of these kids are related to each other, at all. they consider themselves to kind of be one big group of siblings now, but that's only because they were all put through the same trauma. and also. if they were chosen by krane for a reason. then what the fuck happened with characters like spin? or bob? they're both so young. why would krane have picked them? it gets more disturbing the more you think about it. they also are all probably not going by the names their parents gave them either. because they all got renamed to designations (S1, S2) and then renamed again when krane stopped controlling them.
and finally on the note of them not being made to be bionic the way adam, bree, and chase were: that is its own angst potential. i think the showrunners kind of forgot that they established that about the chips, that adam bree and chase can't even switch chips for a day without messing things up because they aren't built to handle each others chips. if that's really the case, then some random teenagers probably also can't handle being implanted with bionic chips? they should all be experiencing a lot more difficulties due to that. it would be fun for the difference between all of them and abc to be highlighted in a way that is not just "abc are old models" anyway. because given the actual lore of the show, no, they're probably NOT old, they're the only ones whose chips WORK PROPERLY ALL THE TIME. krane got his technology from douglas. he doesn't know how to do bionics himself, and he would not be able to make it work correctly with kids he pulled off the streets once douglas left. there's just no way.
okay thanks bionic soldiers rant over.

lab rats fandom, it's great to see y'all again -> question tho:
Marcus and Leo friendship, where are we at with that?
because honestly- i can see them realizing that they're very similar to each other and becoming besties -> obviously only after very thorough talk and a very steady slow build of trust, of course
Like Marcus will see Leo being talked over or dismissed because he's the baby of the family and just- casually melt something with his laser eyes or knock something off the table
Chase, Bree, and/or Adam: !? Marcus, playing it off: Sorry, it was just- so boring listening to you guys. I've seen reality shows with less pointless fighting Chase: ā€¦You watch reality shows? Marcus, holding Chase's shoulder seriously: Of course I do. And then Leo takes the opening to get them all back on track and share his thoughts uninterrupted bc they're all stupefied
just them being silly gossipy drama queens together yk? -> do you see the vision??

chase davenport character analysis i wrote four years ago that i just rediscovered
Part 1 here
This might be a little bit of a reach, but I just say he hides it extremely well, and his siblings actually do think heā€™s full of himself. I do think there are some points in the show where he genuinely believes he is superior, but it kind of goes back and forth, itā€™s not one or the other. They go into a little more detail about this struggle in Elite Force, but they give his main conflict to Bree instead. Chase, not Bree, is the one who struggles with his whole identity around his abilities and feeling insignificant next to people. They made Bree feel insignificant next to Skylar about only having a couple of bionic abilities next to Skylarā€™s multiple super powers, leading her to touch the Acturion. However, Bree was never concerned with her abilities in Lab Rats, she instead strived for normalcy. It would make more sense for Chase to be insecure about his own abilities and do something rash like that instead of Bree. I do like the tunnel scene with Chase and Skylar, where he admits his insecurities after being shown up by Skylar when he misses a mission. Where he says he built his whole identity around being the mission leader, and he doesnā€™t really know who he is without it. Skylar ends up keeping the secret of him locking her in the lab, which was really nice of her. At the end, Chase ends up denouncing his mission leader position, which was really amazing to see him come that far, and not hold his whole identity by that status. His arc pretty much concludes in that episode but whatever.
Another thing that Chase struggles with is his alter-ego Spike, who is basically the exact opposite of Chase. In all four cases of Spike showing up, itā€™s usually his siblings triggering it by either embarrassing him or making him angry. As a result, as soon as he snaps out of it and sees all the damage Spike did, he feels hurt and betrayed. The impact Spike has on Chase is rarely shown due to that plot happening only four times. But Chase is shown to be extremely upset at Adam after he ruined the study session with Sabrina. Chase wasnā€™t shown being outwardly angry at Leo after Principal Perry beat him up, but Iā€™d assume once they got home, Chase would be pissed off at him. This most definitely takes a toll on him and further contributes to his need to be seen as strong and worthy, especially given the fact that Spike is seen as a "cooler version" of himself who he can never live up to.
Chase may appear as an arrogant prick at times, but he's honestly such a sweetheart. His comedic yelling is so funny and he cares about his family so much. Personally, I think his abilities are the most impressive, but thatā€™s just me. He has this habit of touching his face which is really funny. If you look at him any time when the other characters are talking, chances are heā€™ll be touching his face, especially in the fourth season. Chase is often the one to get panicked about certain situations and the others have to tell him to chill out. I canā€™t tell you how many times the phrase ā€œRelax, Chase.ā€ has been uttered on this show. I've headcanonned him as bisexual as heā€™s pretty obviously queer-coded throughout the entire series, but it was obviously never really explored due to the constraints of the show. Watching his interactions with Marcus (before he found out he was evil, an android, and Douglasā€™ creation) and Sebastian (before he turned evil) solidified it for me. People can explain it off as them just being friends all they want, but I think not. Chase is shown to be especially nervous around Marcus and wanting to hang out and impress him. Also, after they had a truce, Chase and Sebastian became close for those two episodes before Sebastian turned on them. Adam says something about Sebastian breaking Chaseā€™s heart later on, how could that be any more obvious?? Also, at the dance with Jake while he was in a cyber cloak as Bree. Despite being shown to resent the whole experience, after the cyber cloak is turned off, Chase says ā€œThank you for a magical eveningā€. I donā€™t care if it was for a cheap laugh. I will die on this hill. Overall, I think he's such a complex and interesting character and I wish there was more to go off on than just a children's sitcom where everyone appears so one dimensional and flat on the surface.

I think it's funny how Adam and Bree fight relatively normally, meanwhile Chase is out here doing all kinds of flips and spins and kicks. It's probably just because he wants to show off but damn, someone get this guy into gymnastics.

Davenport-Dooley Driving Headcanons
Adam
Generally a pretty safe driver, especially when other people are in the car.
Forgets about/misses some road rules at times, though, like straight up forgets 'turn right on red' & 'right of way'.
Pays a lot of attention to other cars bc he's always anxious about other people not knowing what theyre doing/watching where they're going.
Will swerve to avoid hitting worms on the ground.
He once left the engine check light on for a solid month because he "liked the way it looked".
Chase
Drives like a little old lady: slower than cold molasses & obeying every. Little. Rule.
No, he will NOT go a single mph over the speed limit, Bree, I don't care what everyone else is doing.
He's read the entire manual cover to cover & treats his car like his first born child. Probably named it and everything.
Bree
Pedal to the metal the whole time, everyone's screaming, everything's in chaos, she's cursing the whole time because it's "soooo slow".
Gets insane road rage & screams at other cars, lays on the horn every chance she gets.
Hates traffic, if she's ever stuck in traffic she just abandons the car & runs to her destination.
Needless to say, she's not allowed to drive anymore.
Leo
Passenger princess, hates driving and does not get his license until he's at least 20, & even then he still makes other people ferry him around.
Marcus
If Marcus can drive then he was taught by Douglas Davenport, which tells you all you need to know.
Even if he's never touched a steering wheel in his life, he'll insist he knows how to drive, after all how hard can it be? Then he instantly drives off a cliff.
Genuinely makes you question whether he even knows what a car is. He's going 30+mph over the speed limit, HORRIBLE at predicting what other drivers will do, probably not even in the right lane.
You WILL get to your destination. Just maybe not in one piece.

chase davenport character analysis i wrote four years ago that i just rediscovered
Chaseā€™s main conflict throughout this entire show is proving his worth and value to himself and to his family. From the very beginning, Chase is portrayed as rigid and uptight, a rule follower. It usually takes the others a little bit to convince him to bend or break the rules outright due to his rational mindset. In the few instances he does break the rules with his siblings, he finds it exhilarating, calling himself a ā€œbad boyā€ after sneaking in past curfew in one episode. One of Chaseā€™s main things is his mission leader status. According to himself, he was only twelve when he named himself mission leader. From this point forward, that was how he identified himself, and revolved his whole personality around it. Multiple times throughout the show, he is shown to be somewhat of a control freak, and ā€œfun-killerā€. He feels somewhat of a personal responsibility to act responsible and mature compared to his siblings. As a result, they often tease him for his intelligence and other shortcomings (no pun intended hehe).
Adam is usually the main person to make fun of Chase, teasing him for his height and intelligence, and often punching and throwing him around. Chase doesnā€™t have super strength, so he finds it difficult to get even with Adam. This was touched briefly on in ā€œBrother Battleā€ when they get new abilities and have an epic fight in the lab. Chase is tired of always being subjected to Adamā€™s taunting and bullying, so he takes matters in his own hands. After that episode however, they resolve to respect each other more, although this is somewhat short lived. I find it interesting because in some episodes, Adam will tease Chase and heā€™ll get mad because he canā€™t respond to his insults, and in other ones, Chase will just smile and make fun of Adamā€™s lack of intelligence, the dynamic never stays the same. Bree and Chase seem to get along better, but they still have their fights. One of the main things they fought about was in that one episode when Bree got a job at Tech Town to feel normal, but Chase walked in and got a job too after impressing Scott with his wide-spread tech knowledge. The conclusion they both came to at the end of the episode was they both desperately needed it. Bree needed to have one normal thing in her life besides her bionics and missions, and Chase needed to have his wealth of knowledge and influence appreciated, since he was always mocked at home.
I guess what Iā€™m trying to sum up is that the majority of conflicts that Chase is involved in throughout the course of this show is his need to feel confident and secure about his value and worth. He is constantly shown competing with people in his life: the student of the semester contest, the designing of the space elevator, the baby project for health class, the talent show, the whole avalanche mission, etc. In fact, one of the main episodes where this arc is shown is inĀ  ā€œAvalancheā€. They get home from a mission, and Adam and Bree are praised for their flashy abilities while Chase is underappreciated and told heā€™s ā€œflash glue.ā€ Theyā€™re sent on a mission to find a certain property in the arctic to power a device, until a storm shows up on the map. Donald specifically tells the trio not to go on the mission due a storm in the arctic. Chase, wanting to prove his value, goes anyway and is stranded after heā€™s buried by an avalanche. Luckily, Chase is rescued by Douglas, and manages to trick him into going to the lab, where Douglas is captured.
In my opinion, Chaseā€™s main defense mechanism is what's known as reaction formation. He appears as self-absorbed and brash at certain points, bragging about his intelligence to anyone who will listen, and appearing as cocky and confident, putting other people down for not knowing the obvious. However, I honestly think heā€™s compensating and trying to appear more confident that he actually feels, like heā€™s terrified someone will call him out. As a result, he overly gloats to the point where he appears egotistical, when really he doesnā€™t think heā€™s good enough.
Continued in part two.
