this might be controversial (or maybe not! i have no idea!) but if they make a six of crows spin-off show, they need a new cast of actors.

look, the six of crows cast is perfect. it genuinely looks like they shook the books and the characters fell out (slightly older, but i could never really imagine kaz as 17, so i’m fine with that). but they majorly fucked up the writing. it’s written like it was never meant to have its own spin-off.

the worst is jesper and wylan. they completely rushed their relationship and took away basically any tension between them, not to mention, left no room for the kuwei storyline.

kaz and inej was also so rushed. they left absolutely no room for a build up in a spin off series. and inej’s hallucination sequence was fun, but also erased a lot of her trauma.

nina and matthias is the only couple they did right. EDIT: i was corrected in a reblog and i want to fix it here. when i said nina and matthias was done right, i meant that their storyline was the only one followed accurately to the books. HOWEVER, as i was corrected, nina was done so dirty in the show. nina has such a big personality and they completely wiped that and made her completely centered around matthias.

they basically took half of six of crows and crooked kingdom’s storylines, so a spin-off series would have barely any book plot left. and it’s too much to reconcile. non-reader viewers won’t understand if they suddenly just use the bits of book storylines again with the same faces.

i love the crows cast so much. but they aren’t going to be able to show up again in a future spin off. not if it’s done properly this time.

Six of Crows Playlists 🐦‍⬛

I made some Six of Crows playlists, forgive me for the sheer amount of songs, I listen to a downright obnoxious amount of music. I was also legally obligated to include some very 2016-2018 "edgy" music that was typically associated with these books back in my fandom days. The middle school nostalgia aspect really got me.

General book playlist, some of it is songs that fit all of the characters as well as book events, some of it is songs that fit the atmosphere of the setting.

My Jesper and Wylan playlist. I'd be down to make playlists for other specific relationships, they just happen to be my favorite. If that's something you're actually interested in, let me know, because I do have some ideas!

Possibly a collection of all my favorite love songs. They meant so much to me when I was 13, I have such a soft spot.

I'm most embarrassed by this one. It has a lot of the nostalgia element that was mentioned above. It was difficult to find songs that contend with the persona Kaz has so carefully cultivated. Forgive me for the possibly shallow reading of his character that it may convey.

There's lots to work with in regard to Inej. Her past as an acrobat, her future as a pirate, all on top of her character throughout the duology. I had fun.

Possibly one of the most conflicting and chaotic playlists on this list. Creating it really had me pondering Nina's writing. She's a lot more complex/multi-faceted than I'd ever given her credit for, haha!

I struggled the most with Matthias' playlist, I'm actually surprised it's as long as it is. I didn't connect with him as much as the others, especially during my first reading of the duology, but I've definitely gained some respect for his character and what Bardugo was trying to convey when writing him. Normally I'm drawn to characters whose experience parallels mine as a "cult survivor", but there's a lot of notable distance between our experiences.

Similarly to the Kaz playlist, I hope the "just vibes" theme of this playlist doesn't come across as a shallow understanding of Jesper's character. It's the longest playlist, he's my absolute favorite and it shows. I have a lot of respect for him!

A contender for the discordic energy of Nina's playlist. I intentionally leaned into this aspect. Wylan holds a special place in my heart, he helped me come to terms with a lot of things. I fear some of the self projection is clearly evident.

A couple of extra notes:

Expect a follow-up post soon. I very much need a Kuwei playlist, as well as a Kanej/Helnik/Ninej playlist. Perhaps one highlighting the friendship between Jesper and Inej as well, who knows.

If you're uncomfortable with songs with sexual or suggestive lyrics being applied to them, I totally understand and respect that. Those songs were included either because I found that aspect of them ignorable, because I think it matches their "energy" or is the style of music they might enjoy, or quite rarely because I'm specifically keeping the Shadow and Bone continuity in mind.

Example: ...Baby One More Time is a fairly suggestive song. But I'll stand by the fact that Jesper Fahey would listen to 90s pop artists over my dead body.

my toxic trait is that if we had got the six of crows spinoff, I would absolutely have cheered on every wylan/jesper/kuwei edit made to misery business and better than revenge. heck I would have made them myself. no hate to kuwei stans but I do think wylan 'petty bitch' van eck would have both songs on repeat every time he heard kuwei's name

don't mind me, just trying to make a comprehensive timeline of soc/ck

seeing as grishverse is inspired by early 19th century russia, I'll be operating under the assumption that they use the julian calendrer. therefore:

beginning of soc: martius/march ("...the last gasp of winter before spring began in earnest.")

beginning of soc -> djerholm: 2 weeks ("When does[Hringkälla] take place?” / "On the spring equinox.” / “Two weeks from today.")

ice court heist: mid-martius

returning to ketterdam: early-aprillis/april ("It had been just under a week since they’d reached Ketterdam, almost a month since they’d left Djerholm.")

returning/inej's captivity -> rescuing inej: 1 week ("...Van Eck had said he would give them seven days [...] then he would begin torturing Inej. They were almost out of time.")

rescuing inej -> auction: ~1 week (failed sweet reef plan + "...fair auction [...] at the Church of Barter in four days’ time.")

auction: late aprillis-early maius/may

auction -> kaz/inej dock scene: 3 weeks ("In the three weeks since Kuwei’s auction...")

kaz/inej dock scene -> inej threatening pekka: ~1 week ("A month ago he’d been a rich man...")

end of soc: late maius-early lunius/june

overall: the entirety of the duology is around 9 weeks, plus one more week until pekka's epilogue, so 2.5 months total.

BONUS POINTS:

wylan arrived at the barrel three months before the start of soc, in the winter.

kaz and inej steal the dekappel six months before the start of soc.

inej joined the dregs "days after her fifteenth birthday", and since it's implied she'd been with the dregs almost 2 years by the start of soc, we can assume she was born sometime in the spring or summer. she turned 17 either during ck or right after. (EDIT: apparently she's a cancer according to leigh! so she was born in july or late june.)

EXTRA bonus points: using the fact that sailing time from ketterdam to djerholm is stated to be about 10-14 days, we can create a nifty (albeit roughly estimated, disregarding ocean conditions and like, the fact that earth is not actually flat) map of sailing time for all your captain ghafa uses:

ketterdam -> behz ju, shu han: 4-6 days

ketterdam -> os kervo, ravka: 6-7 days

ketterdam -> southern colonies: 6-8 days

ketterdam -> eames chin, novyi zem: 8-10 days

ketterdam -> djerholm, fjerda: 10-14 days

The crows as cards cause I’m bored and why not, as usual my asks are open and I’m always happy to answer!!! Possible ROW and CK spoilers??? Obviously SOC spoilers

Kaz: king of clubs, symbolises strength, power and determination, his ambition towards taking down Rollins, and his effectiveness in doing so, as well as his power by the time ROW occurs in him having two people on the merchant council, the queen of fjerda and the wraith on the seas, in play can be useful, but in most cases doesn’t do much if the rest of the hand is shit, he needs his crows

Inej: Queen of spades, I was going to make her and Kaz match but I’d rather give her an individual one, symbolises intelligence, practical and intellectual, plans ahead of time, inej is always the one in the crows to provide insight to their issues, no matter how cryptic it may be at times, and she shows her ability to understand the consequences of all of their actions better than the other crows several times, in play a black queen can change the game if not countered by a red one

Nina: queen of hearts, pretty obvious as it is, heartrender, queen of fjerda, symbolises a powerful woman who is commanding and has a strong presence yet is compassionate, caring and protective of those she loves, her taking the parem to save the others in coming out of the ice court, as well as generally just being there for the crows in their times of need while still being a very independent and strong female character, in play can be incredibly useful for saving a hand

Matthias: king of hearts, symbolises honesty and spirituality, obviously spirituality to djel and his honesty about changing who he was to be a better man, and admitting that what he did was wrong along with coming to terms with how he was raised and how that effected him and how he treats others, also symbolises a kind gentle man, which he became because of Nina, sparing the boy who shot him, in play again not very useful unless the rest of the hand is good

Wylan: Ace of diamonds, symbolises a financial increase and can indicate a message from a new lover, his claiming of his inheritance from his father, and Jespers role in helping him achieve and maintain that inheritance with reading to him, in play can change the stakes of the game and is very fluid compared to other cards in what it can do, as well as changing the suit to how it sees fit regardless of the suit being played, changing to look like kuwei, asking to be beaten up further for dramatic effect etc

Jesper: Jack of Diamonds, symbolises youth, energy and potential, “maybe he was a bullet in a chamber, waiting to be given direction”, it can also symbolise future financial instability, his gambling, and can be used to represent an unfaithful employee, when he accidentally ratted them out to the dime lions, in play isn’t extremely helpful and generally can benefit the person before the player more than the player themselves, heavily depends on the other cards in the hand, much like how Jesper often puts trying not to disappoint others above his own general well-being and mental health

+ Bonus kuwei: ace of spades, mirrors Wylan, symbolises death, darkness and mystery, parem causing death, hiding in the tomb, nobody really knowing much about him, but can also represent new beginnings, fresh starts and rebirth, moving to Ravka and changing his name to fix his fathers mistakes, arguably one of the most important cards in play, can change the game entirely based on its high place on the list of outcomes on rolling the dice or drawing from a deck of cards chance, can also symbolise power, luck and triumph, whoever was ‘in possession’ of kuwei was winning the game

If anybody has any other opinions on this please let me know!! Also I am aware that technically they have all already been assigned cards in the collectors edition art for crooked kingdom but these are my own takes, might do an analysis post on their cards assigned in the official art if anybody is interested <333 also will do any other characters in the SOC duology and maybe some from the SAB trilogy if asked!!!

Soc characters on an ever after high au! but i won't elaborate too much

This is of course ignoring the already existing characters on EAH, also darker tone to fit their backstories

You know the Inej-cinderella agenda, getting her life destroyed by the current evil stepmother (Heleen)

Kaz and Jordie were the sons of Jack (the beanstalk) and the fairy godmother (yes,the agenda is there too) which each being fated to become the next ones but things get...complicated when Jordie meets and deals with the current Rumpelstiltskin (Rollins) , this also means Alby would become Rumpel if he follows his fate.

Matthias is a soldier of the queen of hearts (Jarl Brum) so he didn't know he could be a main character.This also means Hanne would be fated to be the queen of hearts.

I know we all wanted Wylan for the pied piper, but both of his parents appear in canon so i´ll ajust to it. Making him the son of Rapunzel and the king Midas, the king turned his wife into gold by "accident" and married snow white´s daugther and would rather Wylan to take Rapunzel destiny (since he would be locked on the tower) and his next heir to be king midas.

Jesper was the hardest since both of his parents appear in canon too. Aditi was the twelve fairy (the one that stopped sleeping beauty’s curse to be a deadly one and yes SB is Leoni) while Colm is the son of a random farmer that gives refuge to random fairytale characters passing by. Jesper has to decide either or take the Jack Beanstalk role since it became available when the previous died without a heir.

I had trouble choosing Nina or Kuwei to be either Alice/Dorothy respectively, both seem to fit both. But then i remembered Kuwei’s dad exist in canon so for him here’s this: Bo yul Bayur wanted his son to be normal boy: Kuwei is Pinocchio. I have to think about Nina, something will come eventually.

Edit: I got it, Nina is the daughter of Alice and Dorothy and instead of choosing she plays a dual role, as Nina she is Alice, as Mila she is Dorothy

Editing is hard sometimes, but I think this no longer matches the tone. Or characterization. My Jesper is less cowardly than this.

"Yes— Well—" Jesper flustered. "I am hardly to blame. Kaz said it himself. I am the innocent party—"

"I didn't say that," cut in Kaz, stretching to his full height and standing almost eye-to-eye with Jesper.

"With the way you were looking at Prince Kuwei, can you have expected anything less than him ramming you into a wall and sticking his tongue down your throat? I swear, it looked like he was trying to taste the tapestries. Through your skull."

Jesper's skin burned.

"Good thing then you were the only ones there to see it!"

And not the entire Shu delegation...

Why do people keep saying that we won't get Jesper accidentally kissing Kuwei if we get a spinoff? Like, it could still happen wesper getting together earlier doesn't change that. It'll just be a lot more angsty if it does happen.

I came back to this post after a month because I forgot to say that while the Kuwei kiss would be more angsty I don't want it to happen. I hated that part of the book and I know I'll hate it even more in the show.

'For want of a nail' for Murder Ballad - Kaz bites Inej on the Ferolind. Because I feel like that would have...interesting yet negative/unhinged consequences...please ❤️

This is a goddamn nightmare is what it is. First of all, it would immediately clue Van Eck into her value as a hostage, and second of all, it would reduce Kaz’s ability to be rational about her kidnapping to basically nil. If he’d bitten her then, she probably would be pregnant, and Kaz, Inej, and Jan Van Eck would probably know it. Kaz would be completely off his rocker, and would probably try to just physically fight his way to Inej. The only possible upside is that she might be able to play on Bajan’s sympathies enough to make him help her a bit, but honestly I think he’s not useful enough to do her much good. Basically the only way I can think of for them to get through this without like ten casualties and an international crisis is if the other crows are able to outflank Kaz’s insanity, either by launching their own scheme to distract all of Jan’s guards or to involve other parties who might complicate things for Jan? Maybe they could teach Wylan enough Shu to let him impersonate Kuwei to other members of the Merchant Council and swap him in and out with the real one to keep everyone confused? But Kaz would still just be trying to kill everyone he saw in the background, which would probably make any delicate scheme pretty difficult. Maybe they can lock him up and get Jesper to melt the locks? Anyway, the short answer is: chaos and disaster.

I figured out the layout of the SoC spinoff episodes!

so assuming it will only follow the events of the first book and not CK, and every episode is named after one the crows (so there will be 6 episodes in total) here's what it'll probably be like:

!!!MAJOR SPOILER WARNING FOR SIX OF CROWS BOOK!!!

Ep1: Matthias _ They break him out of hellgate at the start of the book and he has to come to terms with treason against his country so it'd make sense

Ep2: Kaz _ Kaz has a lot of moments in this book and I might be wrong but his first planning, dealing with the ambush, saving Inej and killing Oomen in that terrible way might be a good episode for him. Again I'm not sure about any of this and more than exited to hear what you think and what do you think I can change!

Ep3: Nina _ Nina goes under a lot of stress while trying to save Inej on the boat and she probably deserves that episode. The episode could stretch to her entering Fjerda again and also facing those burned grisha on the stakes and also dealing with Matthias throughout this whole time!

Ep4: Inej _ They would arrive at the ice court by this point and she has to take care of Kaz when he passes out, and I think climbing the incinerator takes place in this episode and that one should DEFINITELY be in Inej's episode. Also if dealing with Tante Heleen and wearing her lynx costume again were in this episode too it'd be super

Ep5: Jesper _ I didn't really know where to put Jesper but I think showing his excitement while running to the druskelle roof and also sounding the black protocol and ALSO driving a tank out of the ice court is so him. Also we're probably gonna have some deep conversations with Wylan in this episode cause they need it at that point with all that happened with Wylan hiding his identity and everything

Ep6: Wylan _ I think the last parts of the book are very important for Wylan's character. Changing his face to Kuwei and especially dealing with his father and seeing once and for all that he's worth nothing to van Eck is enough for that part to be about him. Bit unfair to spend his own episode in another's face but idk where else to put him

P.S. Nina using jurda parem and Matthias betraying his commander directly and all their scenes in the treasury is also important but I don't really know if that could be in their episodes. Tell me what you think! Good luck!

Edit: Sorry I forgot Tante Heleen was dead in the show but well. It's a show. They could always just pull her out and be like "ACtUaLLY..."

31. What moments made you freak out (in a happy or sad way) the most?

Ok, this one might surprise you, but it's the helnik kiss I SQUEALED SO LOUDLY when I read/ listened to it like OH MY- I'm not sure if I've said it before but I was a massive fan of Helnik (I still am but it hurts). He lifted her off her feet and they were both so happy and I was freaking about when I read it

Nina taking parem scared the shit out of me. My jaw dropped.

Ooo, and the scene where Kaz held Inej up after she tripped over. I SQUEALED AGAIN. Because one its Kanej, and that scene with the is my tie straight and the unofficial official start of Kanej. AND Inej Ghafa tripped over LIKE WHATTT. That whole scene was amazing. I love it so much. He held her AHHHHH

46. Your thoughts on Kuwei? Do you feel any particular way about him? Is he an underrated character?

I don't have much of an opinion about him and I have seen people who have such strong feelings against and for him but for me I don't have much of an opinion. I can see why people love him and why they don't. Regarding the Jesper kiss I think that he was a complete asshole if he knew that Jesper thought he was kissing Wylan, BUT if he thought that Jesper knew who he was kissing then it changes. I just think more context is needed (if I've got some peice of information wrong or missing let me know).

Also, there wasn't much about Kuwei, so I can't say much, but I do like his sassiness.

I can really like the potential of a Kuwei and Wylan friendship because Wylan saw more about Kuwei about him than others did. What I find funny about him is the fact that he pretended not to know Kerch because he didn't want to talk, like DAMN (if I could do that, I would).
