sooooo i have this au in mind for dps klaine that would take place during dalton era klaine (naturally) and i wanna write it so bad. here are some highlights

kurt as todd anderson

blaine as neil perry

sam as knox overstreet

mercedes as chris noel (for the samcedes of it all naturally)

kurt transfers to dalton for largely the same reason he did in canon — to get away from bullies. the difference being he doesn’t actually meet blaine until they find out they find out they’re rooming together (as is the case in dps)

blaine’s father is really adamant that he gets good grades so that he’ll be able to get scholarships for a nice law school.

when blaine hints that he might want to do acting, mr. anderson gets agitated with him bc he already had one kid try to follow that acting pipe dream and where did that get cooper? absolutely nowhere, according to his father. blaine is NOT allowed to do the theatre stuff under any circumstances

meanwhile kurt still feels like an outsider amongst the other boys in school bc he’s the self conscious gay kid who is a natural creative in a space where only academics and business seem to matter. the only person that really actively tries to make him feel welcome is blaine who he quietly latches onto.

ofc that kinda shifts when the society is formed.

For the ones who might've missed: I had a lil vacation and went to London to see Hadestown. It was a lot of fun, and we also got last minute Hamilton tickets. I also jokingly said to someone that it was "London, of Carry On fame", but to be honest, fandom was on my mind a lot.

My mum and I went to Chelsea for a restaurant she wanted to try out and yes, okay, Fiona really is rich, huh? It's also so hard to grasp that London really is that big. Yes, Baz lives with Fiona in Chelsea and Simon and Penny move to Camberwell. Close by, right? It's both in London, right? RIGHT?

We also visited Soho, which I know from sconey's fic The Gay Bar (lol) and I almost convinced mum to check out Mayfair, for Lady Ruth, but she was too tired (fair, I dragged her along everywhere). Mayfair felt easier than, you know, Hackney Wick, since that is also on the other side of London. Jeez.

I also went back to Waterstones Picadilly (... several times), which is where I first met Simon and Baz in 2013, because that's where I bought Fangirl!

Funnily enough, the Myosotis series, aka a Klaine fic, was also on my mind a lot. In Myosotis sylvatica, you learn that Pret a Manger is EVERYWHERE in New York (I think it bought Starbucks?? Don't quote me on it.) (I know it's my own fic, but it's been a while.) and I did that because I was inspired by the massive amount of Pret a Manger in London. Also, yes, I went to this city for Hadestown. Shout out to, uh, me, for replanning the entire timeline of Myosotis verna so that Kurt and Blaine could go to Hadestown on their first date.

My unpopular opinion about this character:

Both popular fandom interpretations have correct elements; she's a double-edged sword. Yes, she's a passionate, ambitious and quite possibly autistic young woman who has been a victim of constant and often vicious bullying, and I think she's also an self-serving, insufferable theatre kid with egomaniac tendencies and occasionally extreme reactions to being upstaged. Both are correct. She's complicated.

ALSO, my unpopular opinion is that I don't hate Season 3B for her. A lot of people complain about her being willing to defer her application for Finn and Kurt, or consider somewhere other than New York to study, because 'oh, she's acting OOC, she cares about Finn more than her dreams, what happened to crackhouse!Rachel', and while I do think that Rachel throwing away her dreams for a man (which she wasn't really, she still had every intention of being a star) isn't necessarily a good thing, the disappearance of crackhouse!Rachel is. Rachel learning to take other people's feelings into consideration--especially the feelings of the man she plans to marry--is a GOOD THING. Rachel being willing to be adaptable is a GOOD THING. Thank you.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

Of course, I wish that she'd managed to have an ending with Finn--not necessarily RM's ending, but an ending, maybe in one of the non-Manhattan New York suburbs.

On a side note, I wish we'd seen her participate in more community theatre--maybe do local productions, or something.

How I feel about this character:

Finn is one of my absolute favourites, along with Mercedes. He's a very realistic teenager, and I think he's honestly the main character of Glee.

Rachel mostly, but in the reality where I can't ship any of my main ships (I once worked out what my Glee ships would be if I couldn't ship any of the OTP's) would honestly have to be Finncedes. I think they'd hit it off.

Honestly, Finn and any of the guys. I love when the guys are just hanging out doing guy stuff--like helping Puck study, or ambushing him on a pool cleaning job.

Very little that he does falls out of the realm of 'things a teenage boy might do'. Sure, that might make him a jerk at times--and he is a jerk at times--but he's not an extra-special form of Super Jerk Worst Character Ever

aside from the tragically obvious, I really wish that he'd just apologise to Santana for outing her. That would have been so easy, and I think it would have made the whole thing feel so much more natural--you can see already that he's already aware that he did the wrong thing and is attempting to make it up to her, and it would be much better if he'd just apologised as well. Especially since he's apologised for most other egregiously wrong things he's done, usually immediately after the fact.

If you asked Rachel, which nobody had but when that ever stopped the diva, the natural order of things had been disrupted when Courtney (formerly Kurt) had gotten the part in a local theatre’s musical and Rachel hadn’t. That Mr. Schuester played favorites and punished originality while the theater director did not, was not something Rachel would acknowledge. Be that as it may, Courtney was too busy over the summer with the play to take much notice of other rumblings. Such as Finn, Puck and Sam moping and pouting because some new kid, who was reportedly taller than Finn, had moved to the district and proven himself to be a great QB. She chalked up word that he was not a good guy to jealousy. As much as she loved Finn, Courtney had to admit it might do him some good to not have things handed to him on a silver platter. And she was inclined to think Puck was bothered by the new guy being more of a panty melter than he was.

The first day back at school she still hadn’t seen him thought he was all the other Cheerios could whisper about when Sue wasn’t looking, which wasn’t often. By the time practice was over she was beat so when she did see him, she thought he was gorgeous but so what. She was tired of pursuing guys and being disappointed. She could wait til college when maybe, a guy would her and take what he wanted

Peter Pan at the Pantages Theatre:

(Unfortunately my picture of the cast board wasn't in focus. But it looked like the main cast was all in, with William Foon and Reed Epley in the roles of John and Michael respectively, with the other John/Michael actors playing Lost Boy roles.)

The show is probably the most clearly targeted to younger children of any that I've seen in the last year (including Mrs. Doubtfire and A Christmas Story). I haven't seen nor thought much about Peter Pan in literally decades, but as a kid I watched a recording of the old TV broadcast with Mary Martin multiple times. The parts I still remembered were most of the lyrics to "I'm Flying," the existence of Captain Hook's tarantella (it's how learned the word "tarantella"), and the scene where Peter Pan asks the audience to clap.

It is probably for the best that I forgot everything else, because after skimming through the video of the 1960 broadcast available online, every scene with Tiger Lily made my eyebrows rise straight up into my hairline. In this production there were changes to the book (made by playwright Larissa Fasthorse) to make those scenes less like blatant tired stereotypes as well as to modernize other parts of the setting and text; on occasion these changes seemed oddly grafted-on, but overall it is probably for the best. As an adult, watching this show was very much an exercise in wrestling nostalgia, with the weird result that during all of Act 1 my brain was telling me, "no, no, this boy who is played by a teenage boy should actually be a middle-aged woman with a pixie cut." There is no significant reason for this other than that's how I was used to seeing it, so if it's the first time a lot of kids are seeing this show, better that it's a version that doesn't have a really lazy, insulting portrayal of indigenous people.

Mildly spoiler-y notes below:

Highlight #1 of the show for me was Cody Garcia as Captain Hook; they were hammy and fun and well-calibrated as a comic villain, and it felt like the show came alive whenever they were in the scene. (I should add Kurt Perry as Smee into that as well.)

Highlight #2 was the main flying-to-Neverland scene, which was a simple but very effective use of background graphics/projections with stage flying effects.

Singing was generally good. Once I got used to the idea of Peter Pan being played by a male actor I thought Nolan Almeida did a pretty good job in the role. Acting overall was a mixed bag with highlights as noted above.

There was an extended Hamlet joke in Act 2 which seemed like it was throwing a bone to the adults in the audience (and frankly I was relieved to have it).

Audience: Not quite full but definitely contained lots of kids. The ones nearby were fairly chatty but I can excuse that for their age. The six-year-old behind me who responded "I love you" out loud after "Hook's Waltz" was 1000% a better audience member than the adult couple nearby who talked to each other and kept checking phones through the entirety of Act 1 (and thankfully left at intermission; I suspect they didn't know what kind of show they bought tickets for).

Growing up with two parents who have busy jobs, and a brother who seems to be perfect at everything he does and is always the centre of attention, isn’t always easy. As a kid, Blaine idolized his big brother. He admired Cooper’s talent and confidence and wanted to be just like him, but Cooper always seemed to do everything better. No matter how hard Blaine tried to keep up with him despite their age difference, Cooper didn’t always seem to know, or care, that Blaine being ten years younger meant he didn’t have as much experience as Cooper himself, and he was extremely critical of his little brother. Cooper had no issues with pushing Blaine into the background — both literally and figuratively. But the harder Cooper pushed, the harder Blaine tried to live up to his expectations. And Cooper wasn’t the only one who had high expectations of Blaine — his father did too. There always seemed to be an underlying tension in the Anderson home, and Blaine often felt like he had to compete with Cooper for their father’s attention. Blaine worked hard on his talents and made sure to get good grades, and to always be polite and charming, hoping to earn his father’s affection that way. Trying to live up to his father and brother’s incredibly high expectations is one of the reasons Blaine is the perfectionist he is today. 

When Blaine came out of the age of thirteen, his father’s reaction wasn’t exactly what Blaine had been hoping for. There wasn’t much of a reaction at all, really, and the fact that his father almost seemed to pretend like it had never happened made things even more strained between them than they already were. Blaine would often feel like his father hoped that rebuilding a car with him or taking him to a football game might make him straight. Rationally, Blaine knew his dad loved him, but sometimes he couldn’t help but feel like he had to tone down his personality, to try to fit in more, and that being gay was something to do quietly in their house. There were times when they would barely speak to each other, one of them being after hiss father tried to convince him to choose a more reliable career path when Blaine announced he wanted to apply for NYADA, which resulted in many fights.

At school, things weren’t exactly easier when Blaine came out. A long year of bullying escalated at a Sadie Hawkins dance, and after ending up in the hospital and some long talks with his parents, Blaine ended up transferring to Dalton Academy. It was easy to blend in at his new school, the uniform and anti-bullying policy offering a feeling of safety Blaine hadn't felt in a long time. But sometimes he couldn’t help but feel like he was playing a role instead of truly being himself, and part of him regretted running from his bullies.

While the performing arts, theatre and music have always been Blaine’s main interests and biggest passions, that doesn’t mean that it’s all he’s ever been interested in. As a kid, his parents let him pursue every interest his young self could think of, from piano, singing, dancing and acting to fencing, tennis and football. He climbed trees with other kids, read books at an impressive speed, learned how to bake and joined many clubs, much like he did in his senior year at McKinley. That doesn’t mean he was good at everything he tried, but that never stopped him from being open to trying new things. And he never stopped having a wide array of interests and hobbies — his taste in music is still all over the place, he still loves anything superheroes-related, still boxes, does yoga and attends aerobics classes, loves watching sports games and plays quite a few instruments.

When Kurt and Blaine moved back to New York after getting married, Blaine was offered a second chance at NYADA. After graduating with honours, he starred in Hairspray, West Side Story, Little Shop of Horrors, the very first LGBTQ production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (alongside his husband) and, most recently, in Grease as Danny Zuko for which he has won a Tony. Performing on Broadway isn’t the only thing Blaine has been doing career-wise, though. When Audrey was born, Blaine took a break from the stage and started to focus more on writing music, and he can now proudly call himself a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter. His last performance as Danny Zuko is in just a few days, and he plans to take a little break again, to be able to spend more time with Audrey and to write new music. Blaine is also an advocate for protecting LGBTQ+ youth and anti-bullying. He speaks at schools and performs at charity benefits, and tries to volunteer as much as he can. Blaine is grateful for every opportunity he gets, and he knows that no matter what, he will always find ways to make art and help people. 

CONNECTIONS

PAM & ANTONIO ANDERSON (Parents): Blaine has always been much closer to his mother than to his father, especially after his coming out. Although his mother can be a little intense sometimes, she has always been very supportive of Blaine and is still his biggest fan. While his father is still much more emotionally distant, and Blaine still talks to his mother a lot more than he does to his father, he and Blaine have worked hard on improving their relationship. It’s still far from perfect, but things are much better between them now. COOPER ANDERSON (Half-brother): While there are still times when Blaine feels overshadowed by his brother, and they still bicker sometimes, their relationship is much better than it used to be. He knows that at the end of the day, Cooper has his back and tries his best to support him in his own way. KURT HUMMEL (Husband): They’ve certainly had their ups and downs in the past, but things are going better than ever between Kurt and Blaine. They’ve gotten much better at communicating, which is something Blaine continues to work on, and there is no one he would rather spend the rest of his life with or raise their daughter with. AUDREY HUMMEL-ANDERSON (Daughter): Blaine had always known that he wanted to have kids some day, and he absolutely adores being a father. He sings her to sleep every night, happily lets her paint his nails and is always up for a tea party or dance party. While he tries not to spoil her too much, he often can’t resist her pleading eyes and finds himself giving in to her requests more often than not. SAM EVANS & TINA COHEN-CHANG (Best friends): When Blaine felt lost at McKinley, Sam was the one who was there for him and stopped him from running away to Dalton, and Blaine will always be grateful for the way Sam helped him through that rough time. Together with Tina, they formed an inseparable trio during their senior year, and his friendship with both of them is still as strong as ever. RACHEL BERRY (Best friend): Blaine has admired Rachel’s talent and ambition from the very first time he’d met her, and while he already considered her a friend when they were both in high school, the two of them truly became close when they both found themselves back in Ohio. Their bond became even stronger when Rachel agreed to be their surrogate and he considers her one of his best friends.

Blaine closes his front door behind him and he slides down against it. Once he’s on the ground, he closes his eyes and he hides his head between his legs.

He couldn’t get out of Kurt’s room fast enough. He’s high on… well, it seems to be adrenaline. He was so focused on getting away that the entire bus trip to his place feels like it happened within a second. But now that he’s in the comfort of his own temporary home, time finally slows down again and he takes a deep breath.

What just happened?

Blaine knows what happened, though. He kissed Kurt. He totally, wholeheartedly kissed Kurt. Kurt, another guy. And Blaine did it because he wanted to. He wanted to know what Kurt’s lips feel like. He wanted to grab Kurt by the neck and pull him closer. He wanted it all and fuck, he still wants it.

Blaine wants Kurt.

Blaine leans his head against the door. This doesn’t make sense. He shouldn’t want this, but even though Blaine bolted out of Kurt’s room, a part of him wants to go back and kiss him more. He remembers the feeling of Kurt’s lips against his. He remembers how soft the hairs on the back of Kurt’s head are. He remembers the way Kurt kissed him back.

“Argh!” Blaine screams out.

He puts his head in his hands and he tries not to think about it, but he can’t. He wants Kurt. He does.

But he can’t.

Because he’s straight and he has a girlfriend, but not only that, but Blaine’s been low-key homophobic about the idea of Kurt and Sunil being together. And Blaine knows that Kurt is also planning on going to London to visit his ex, which pisses Blaine off too.

Wait.

Or maybe it’s not the fact that Kurt’s into men. Maybe it’s the fact that Kurt’s not into Blaine.

Blaine feels the panic rise.

He should be happy to realise that he is not homophobic, but the alternative feels somehow worse, which is a shitty thing to think, but everything about this is shitty and weird and just wrong. Everything about this is plain wrong. Blaine isn’t gay, or bi, or all the others words he’s learnt about when he saw a flyer at the queer organisation at Yale. It’s not like Blaine can really remember the flyer, because the moment he saw it, he put it away. He couldn’t deal with it for some reason.

Blaine likes girls. He’s only ever liked girls. Not only that, but he’s in a quite accepting area. He even has gay colleagues back home! If Blaine were gay, he would’ve known, right? Fuck, Blaine did theatre in high school and college. He can’t do theatre and not realise he’s gay, right?

He went to an all-boys boarding school, for God's sake. He knew gay people back then. Two of his high school friends are a couple. Not only that, but he knows guys messed around with each other in the dorms. If Blaine had wanted that, then he could've easily done that! He did notice all the attractive guys in his classes, but that was jealousy, right?

Sure, he can count the amount of girls he’s kissed in his life on one hand, and okay, he never really liked kissing them-

But he has a girlfriend!

Well, you never liked kissing her either, a voice in his head says and Blaine feels like he’s spiralling even more, because it’s true. Kissing Quinn is fine, just fine. There isn’t really anything to it. He likes it because he likes having someone close to him, but it’s not the epic romantic feeling from the movies.

Maybe that’s it! Maybe Blaine just wanted to kiss Kurt because it’s been too long since he kissed anyone.

But deep down, Blaine knows he’s kidding himself. How else can he explain the way he couldn’t stop looking at Kurt during the movie? How else can he explain that he just wanted to be closer to him? How else can he explain the fact that this was the first kiss that actually made him feel something? This wasn’t the same as kissing Quinn, or any other girl in college.

Blaine can’t really describe it, but it just made sense. It felt good. It’s as if his mind went Oh, there you are. This was the big thing he’s been looking for forever.

He’s finally found it.

And now he feels awful.

Quinn calls that night, as usual. The calls have decreased, since she spends most of her time with Denise, but she still calls.

Blaine turns off his phone.

When Blaine powers on his phone the next day, he sees that he’s gotten a missed call from Kurt as well. Maybe he should just stop answering his phone all together. He’s not ready for this.

Blaine’s slept terribly, but he still puts some effort into looking alright. He has to go back to work. He has to see Tadeja.

Maybe that’s the distraction he needs.

Blaine might not be the best at his job, but he knows how to run a business. That’s what he’s studied for and that’s why he came here. That’s what’s expected of him, and that is what he knows.

Things only get worse from here on. For the next three days, Blaine goes to work and ignores everything else. He doesn’t go outside for the fear of running into Kurt, which is ridiculous, but Ljubljana is a small city and he’s gotten to know it with Kurt by his side, so everything reminds him of him.

He’s stopped answering his phone. It’s a good thing that he also has a work phone, so that he can keep up to date with what’s going on with his company. Work gives him a purpose. Work keeps his mind away from what Blaine’s started referring to as The Incident. After all, that is what it was. It was just an incident.

It’s not that he can fully stop thinking about Kurt, though, no matter how he tries. Every now and then, when he’s alone with his thoughts, he remembers how it felt to kiss him, and every time he remembers it, it sends him into a spiral of confusion and guilt.

Of course, Blaine’s isolation cannot last.

Five days after The Incident, Blaine finds Tadeja waiting outside his office.

“Dober dan,” Blaine says with a smile, but the smile fades when he sees the serious look on Tadeja’s face.

“A certain Quinn Fabray called the office. Apparently her boyfriend hasn’t been responding to her texts and calls in days.”

“Ah.”

“As your associate, I advise you to call her back. Now.”

And Tadeja, bold as ever, shoves a phone into his hands. Quinn is on the other side of the line. Seeing no way out, Blaine goes into his office. Tadeja gives him a supportive pat on the back as he passes her, and Blaine wonders what Quinn’s told her.

Once he’s in the office, it’s time to face the music.

“Quinn?” he asks.

“Oh my God,” Quinn lets out a relieved sigh. She sounds on the verge of tears and Blaine feels an absolute pit in his stomach. “Finally.”

“Quinn, isn’t it in the middle of the night in LA?” Blaine tries to keep his voice calm. He knows he’s messed up.

“You haven’t texted! You haven’t called! I was worried sick!” Quinn yells. Blaine has to move the phone away from his ear. “I am literally about to travel to the other side of the world and them my boyfriend fucking ghosts me! What happened?”

“I… I’m sorry, Quinn. I really am.”

“Blaine, talk to me.”

Blaine tries. He needs to confess, because she’s right. It’s mid-April. She’ll be here in a few days. He needs to tell her that he cheated on her.

Oh fuck.

He cheated on her. With a man.

“Quinn, I-I… I can’t.”

It’s silent for a while.

“Who hurt you?”

That snaps Blaine out of his thoughts. Quinn’s tone’s shifted and now she’s ready to drop-kick anyone, but Blaine also feels even more guilty. His super supportive girlfriend is here to comfort him.

“Look. Quinn. I can’t tell you. I’m sorry, but I promise it won’t happen again.”

“Are you still expecting me?”

“Of course.”

Quinn is silent again. It feels like the silence goes on forever, but eventually she sighs.

“Okay. Okay. If you don’t want to talk, I will not force you. Just know that when you do want to tell me, I’m here for you.”

Blaine wipes away his tears. He didn’t even realise he started crying. Quinn is so loving and that makes all of this worse. But maybe this is what he needs. He needs to be reminded that Quinn is the girl for him.

“I miss you,” he croaks out, “I can’t wait to have you here.”

After all, once Quinn is here, everything will make sense again. Everything will go back to normal.

One of the reasons I believe a lot of people are so aggressively threatened, freaked out, and even offended by the concept of a gay or bi Mike is because then they’d have to face the fact that queer people are just people. Which, duh. Of course, they are! But Mike Wheeler, at least in the first season (and sorta the second season), is THE main character. He’s THE guy.

It’s what turned Finn Wolfhard into a heartthrob and fast-tracked him to starring roles in movies like It and Ghostbusters: Afterlife. For people who grew up loving 80s childhood adventure movies, on which the Duffers based their show, Mike Wheeler is Elliot from E.T. He’s Mikey from The Goonies. He’s Marty from Back to the Future. He’s Luke from A New Hope. In other words, he’s the kind of young sci-fi hero every boy dreamed of becoming. I mean, who wouldn’t want to find out that magic/the supernatural is real, go on an insane, life-changing adventure with their friends, stand up to bad guys, and fall in love with a girl with superpowers in the span of a week?!

Other than being nerdy/into D&D (which is honestly not that far from being a theatre kid, tbh)/hj, kinda melodramatic, and somewhat unathletic (affectionate), there’s nothing about Mike Wheeler that radiates gayness on the surface. Plus, he’s the protagonist! In Season 1 we experience most new things through his eyes. That makes him the audience surrogate character, so how can the audience surrogate character be (gasps) GAY?! That’s OBviously impossible. He’s just a guy. He’s just a dude. He’s just a person. He’s just the boy next door.

And if queer people are just people, then that means ANYONE could potentially be queer. Even your younger sister. Even your best friend, who has no stereotypically gay traits, plays football, and has a girlfriend. Even your children (gasps). Even you (am I gay quizzes? were born from fears like this). That’s terrifying for people who expect the world, and the media they consume, to be black-and-white.

People like boxes. They like things that are safe. Every time general audiences are introduced to a new character they fully assume the character is straight, even if they aren’t shown to have any interest in girls (like Will) unless they are an obvious stereotype, say the words, “I’m gay,” or explicitly make out with a boy (even then, some people will still try to claim they’re confused or simply “struggling with their sexuality”).

Kevin Keller from Riverdale. Kurt Hummel from Glee. Patrick in The Perks of Being a Wallflower (as much as I love that movie). Carlos in HSMTMTS. These are all characters that are Gay™️. They are almost always the comic relief sidekick, or the gay bestie for the main female character, or some variation of common tropes. Audiences (even homophobic ones) are increasingly used to seeing these types of characters on their screen, but a gay Mike Wheeler would be a different type of character entirely. 

“Mike being gay or bi would just be OUT OF NOWHERE and would be bad writing done just for woke points.” Okay. Aside from the fact that it would simply NOT be out of nowhere (gestures wildly at the Byler Proof Slides), let’s unpack the phrase “out of nowhere” for a second. Why is something only considered “out of nowhere” when it’s gay and never when it’s straight? Was it out of nowhere for Dustin to find a girlfriend while at camp? Is the resurrection of Stancy out of nowhere? And to the people who are still somehow convinced that Will Byers isn’t gay, just “maturing slower than his friends,” I guarantee you they wouldn’t call it “out of nowhere” for Will to suddenly have a female love interest, even though it clearly would be. They would encourage it, even if it was someone especially ridiculous like El, who is literally his sister, or Max, with whom he’s had almost no on-screen conversations. This is why you see people on TikTok and YouTube who genuinely believe Will’s painting is for the random girl he danced with at Snowball. Talk about out of nowhere!

“But Mike just isn’t gay. Don’t be delusional. Don’t be unrealistic. He is straight. He has only been shown to like El and has one of the most extreme cases of romantic tunnel vision in fiction I’ve ever seen.” Okay, let’s push aside the constant lip stares, the romantically charged conversations with his best friend, the fact that he can’t say or even write, “I love you” to his girlfriend, the ways the Duffers have consistently framed the Will/Mike/El dynamic with love triangle imagery and drawn our attention to this for the entire show, and more (gestures wildly at the Byler proof slides once more!!) for one second. 

The emphasis on “just isn’t” betrays them and their underlying perspectives. Let’s be clear. You can say Robin just isn’t straight because she’s been explicitly confirmed in show and out of show to be lesbian and into girls. You can say Will just isn’t straight because his sexuality has been all but confirmed as well. But you can’t say Mike “just isn’t” gay if the only concrete “proof” you have for this is his (turbulent) relationship with Eleven. Keep in mind. Without Vecna, we don’t have access to the innermost thoughts of any of the characters. All we have to go by is their actions, their words, and the intentional ways the Duffers have coded their characters. Ultimately, people who say this are saying that Mike Wheeler “just isn’t gay” because he doesn’t fit their pre-conceived, ignorant, myopic notions of what a gay person is. Mike “just can’t be” gay in these people’s minds because he hasn’t done any gay “actions,” whatever that even means (that’s why they believe Will- sweet, innocent Will- is a predator/homewrecker because they associate gayness with freakish deviance and see it as something inherently sexual, whereas if Will were a girl with the exact same feelings towards Mike, they’d never in a trillion years see it this way).

In both real life and in fiction, despite all the progress we’ve made as a society, straight is something you’re allowed to just be, by default, regardless of whether you’re dating someone. Gay is something you have to PROVE or “fall into,” and even then it’s treated with incredible suspicion (this is why people who ship Stobin believe Steve can “fix” Robin and make her into boys). Bisexuality is tragically either erased altogether, treated as a joke/a phase, or completely misunderstood (I heard someone say Mike could never be bi because he’d never date Will and El at the same time - what?! That’s not how bisexuality works). And comphet is something entirely baffling to straight audiences. You might as well be saying 2+2 equals armadillo. 

They’d rather believe that he’s just become an asshole, or that Finn Wolfhard has suddenly become a bad actor. Because accepting that Mike Wheeler isn’t straight means accepting that he can be the cool, brave, valiant, kind, caring protagonist of seasons 1 and 2, AND also be madly in love with his best friend. That feels like a bait-and-switch to some people because they don’t see queer people as “normal,” even if they claim they aren’t homophobic. They see queer people as “the other,” as something alien. [Insert Visibly Stereotypical Character Here] can be gay, not MY Mike Wheeler. He’s straight. STRAIGHT.  He’s madly in love with El. He and Will are just friends. JUST friends. Sound like someone?

That’s one of the reasons that Byler will be such powerful, meaningful, representation (aside from just being the only logical explanation for Mike’s weird actions). Byler becoming canon will give hope and provide a voice for the millions of LGBTQ+ kids out there who don’t fit a stereotype or society’s pre-conceived notions but who just happen to not be straight. Mike Wheeler will join Nick Nelson as one of the best LGBTQ+ teens EVER on screen. It will be a cultural reset. And it will hopefully open people’s minds to the beautiful tapestry of humanity. A love story so pure, so beautiful, and so overwhelming that the boy who tried so hard to be “normal” and to deny his feelings for his best friend and the boy who survived bullies, a week in a hellish alternate dimension, and a possession that took over his mind and body had no choice but to go crazy together.

A/N: Sorry this isn’t a fic, I’ve been sick all week and I’m now starting to get over it, I plan to have the fic matching up with the HCs soon. Sidenote: I might make a part two. Without further ado

•Eli’s favorite musical has to be the phantom of the opera. I mean it gives an accurate representation of how shitty it is living with significant scarring in our society

•But TPotO’s soundtrack isn’t his favorite, that would be Heathers

•And even before y’all had met, Eli knew all of the lyrics to the entire soundtrack 

•When he heard that your school was doing Heathers this season he was so excited

•When it came time to go through… a completely different story

•Dimitri had to haul his ass back to school so he could watch it with his friend

•He was so nervous to go to the showing because he was scared that one of his karate bros would see him walk in and mock him for it

•Much to his surprise Miguel, Aisha, and Moon are all there and are about as shocked to see him as he is to see them

•Mrs. LaRusso would drag along all of the LaRussos there as well, just in a different section (We all know she supports the school & its students, even if she is a bit mortified after ‘Dead Girl Walking’)

•Even though he feels like he doesn’t need to be so guarded because he knows his karate bros are there and won’t mess with him he's still struggling trying not to sing (this man's initiative ended the moment ‘Fight For Me’ started)

•And when he first sees you, up on the stage, his eyes are glued to your figure. Mentally saying something along the lines of, “How can someone be confident enough to do that?”

•Babe, theatre kids are a whole ass different breed when it comes to being on stage

•Ngl thinks you’re really cute - everyone can tell

•When you look out into the audience during, ‘Me Inside of Me’ you don't expect to see anyone looking at only you, then you see him. 

•His eyes shine brightly with wonder, admiration, and attraction - so much so that you have to look away because of how flushed you are.

•Ram’s actor is just looking at you like you’re fucking crazy, “Bro, I thought Kurt’s actor and I were supposed to be the ay ones? Weird.” 

•After the show Eli always, and I mean always, checks when the next musical is gonna happen and what it’ll be

•The next show is Sweeney Todd, and this boy is excited

•When opening night hit he was practically vibrating with excitement

•Something he didn’t take into account is the burning rage he felt during the “Kiss Me” scene

•He ended up leaving early so he wouldn’t have to see you kiss someone (that wasn’t him)

•Later he felt bad for feeling that possessive and jealous over someone who wasn’t even his. It was then and there that he decided that the next time he saw you, he would ask you out

•Luckily for him when school starts up again the two of you share several classes

•And he never ended up asking you out every time he walked near your direction he chickened out

•Can anyone guess what happened after that…  he started dating moon 

•During their relationship, you never really ended up talking to him, although you were pretty good friends with Moon before the two of them started dating

•After Moon broke up with him though her immediate reaction was to call you and tell you he was single (and also to ask him out when he stopped acting like a dumbass)

•Once he started acting like he had a brain again one of the first things you did was ask him out

•Thank fucking God you did because  he would never, honestly he was so shocked that you’d even consider him after all the dumb shit he’d done

•I mean, honestly, why would any guy like you get involved with someone like him

•He ends up standing there so long that you think he’s rejecting you

•So once you start walking away he pipes up, “Golf N’Stuff, Saturday, 6 P.M. don’t be late,” to which you just nod your head

•He ends up being a few minutes late because of practice

•And y’all know that the entire dojo is non-discreetly stalking the two of you throughout the entire date until the two of you split up for the night
