Letting Go: How Shinkai Succeeds where Lucas Fails

After reading that essay on how Kung Fu Panda did the “letting go of attachments” story way better than Lucas did, I was inspired to write this. The problem with SW is that it tries to apply what is spiritual advice to a hero’s narrative when it’s not about heroism. It’s about coming to terms with grief, preparing for death or letting your child grow up. I want to talk a bit about two of Makoto Shinkai’s films that are both favorites of mine, Weathering With You and Suzume as both delve into this topic. The latter has its title character come to terms with her grief and trauma while the former is a rejection of the utilitarian view of letting one person die for the “greater good”.

Suzume succeeds with its “letting go” message because it focuses on the journey and shows the importance of a true support system and that it takes time to come to terms with grief. Expecting people to just let go immediately isn’t fair and unrealistic. Suzume’s whole journey is about exploring new places, meeting new people and learning joy can still come from grief.

Shinkai based this movie off the 2011 earthquake which was a real source of trauma for Japan. Suzume is a survivor who lost her mother and her home. She has to learn to not dwell on her past hurt but at no point is she shamed for missing her mother or told to just let Souta rot as the keystone for “the greater good”. She’s allowed to mourn. She and her aunt, Tamaki grow as people and as parent and child through emotional experiences, both in the movie during their argument and reconciliation as well as in the booklet that revealed a bit about their past. Tamaki had the responsibilities of being a parent thrust on her and resented it at times but communication was what helped their relationship become healthier and she never shamed her niece for having negative emotions. I’ve written an essay about this too.

The reason this movie succeeds at its message is that it treats its characters and audience with sensitivity. Suzume heals by remembering the happy moments with her mother and Tamaki was willing to adapt to her needs, unlike the Jedi Council. I think @abla-soso’s written about this but George doesn’t have the healthiest view of human psychology and trauma or of relationships nor is he a good writer. He’s sympathetic to Anakin, sure, but he and much of the fandom treat him as just greedy for holding onto his attachments when he doesn’t have a support system that validates his emotions and won’t help him heal except for telling him to meditate. A child healing by remembering their mother while going on a road trip to come out of their shell is not the same as being forced to go and help slavers that caused you so much pain. How can one heal from that?

The other movie in question, Weathering With You, is sort of a response to the ultra collectivism in Japan. Hina is expected to die so the rainfall will stop but what about the people who know her and have to deal with her loss? The little people are always forgotten about in these greater good arguments. Kind of like Trace and Rafa in TCW. Hodaka may have been selfish, yes, but Hina was the one person who treated him with kindness and affection as opposed to how his parents and the kids from his hometown did. Not to mention she still had a brother to take care of with their mother dying a year before the film was set. To just die would be abandoning those who needed her. Hodaka’s trauma and anger is treated with respect by Shinkai as opposed to just being written off as evil like Lucas or Jedi stans would.

Some have interpreted the movie as a climate change denial story with the rains and flooding being treated as natural. But it’s really more of a response those who put all the blame and pressure on one person to fix the problem, especially the young being forced to do so by the older generations. It’s not fair for the older generations to create these problems then put all the burden of solving it on the youth. The Jedi council was plenty guilty of that with how they treated their padawans. And it’s okay to live your life to the fullest, even if the world is falling apart.

I’m sure the Jedi apologists will probably respond by saying “Jedi aren’t against love or emotion, just possessiveness” but that’s not what the movies show even if Lucas didn’t intend for it to come off that way. Maybe these movies treat the subject with more sensitivity and nuance because they’re written by someone who understands Shinto philosophy unlike a 70s hippie who blends stoicism with eastern beliefs. Yes, SW was intended to be black and white, but that’s not how real life works. What may not affect one person will affect another and it’s not wrong to need time and unconditional love to heal. You can’t just slap labels like selfish attachment or greed on someone when you don’t know or refuse to understand their circumstances and motivations and it’s not fair to judge or write them off.

Work - Um well, I'm remote, and I finished all that scanning, and I didn't leave myself any efiles so...nothing. I have a couple of press releases to read but that's not required. I'll have to answer any emails that come in; SJC has to give video files in a case to opposing council but the correctional facility that sent the videos couldn't be normal and send like mp4 files or something no. I get bup, and dat, and ifp and like all the file types one specifically need VLC to open - which I don't automatically have on the work comp; that's one of those programs IT has to greenlight for you. I'll probably get emails about that but SJC is also in the middle of depos so her responses will be sporadic at a minimum.

Background Noise - I am remote working so I will be watching fun DVR stuff today; I do have plenty of podcasts going over old shit I'm familiar with that I can have on mute while I do that to try and work down my Watch Later list on YT. Speaking of YT, I did two dozen (24) videos yesterday, one of which was an almost 3 hr stream and another that was nearly 2 hrs.

Study - Friday is Wikipedia day and boy do I have a bunch of articles I can read between doing my chores and whatever else around here.

I read a couple chapters of my new book yesterday, plus like ten articles I was able to get around the paywall to read. I feel accomplished.

Extras - Friday means I clean the catbox out and prep it for the weekend; I'm also going to get in the kitchen and clean a few appliances, the backsplash, the hood & the spice cabinet. I'm making fish with a butternut squash risotto for dinner; I had a friend over yesterday (plus a Thurs night football game) so I didn't get as far in Shinkenger as I wanted. I did get through the movie/special and an episode so I have five left until I finish the series. That's two and a half hours. Then Garo over the weekend (should finish that) and Kung Fu Panda 3. The mini-essay turned into a full essay but it's already finished; I may work on another long ass essay while I'm working and then Idk. Maybe coloring, maybe writing a fic, whatever takes my fancy.

New Frame Directives

We are attempting a frame-shift operation, the council has convened for an emergency meeting. The evil must be defeated and I'm attempting to jump through time. There are things that simply must be done to shift the frame of the experience. Like, if you've ever had the thought "What if I could call everyone", or in more modern times, "What if we had a Zoom meeting" then this is in that vein. The core of this belief will be incorporated into the code of conduct at headquarters, a sort of radical reorientation of our user experience, it's been truly terrible and we're here to change that. More policies will be incorporated as I venture deeper into my quest through the matrix. The apps have been deleted, and I'll move on to eliminating shortcuts leading to the related websites. I've also unsubscribed from the email portion of the A4A experience. I am footloose and fancy-free. The pest question troubles me, I feel moved to delete the embarrassing number of fire-emoji contacts I've accumulated since my 18th birthday. I need to cause a change. I can get out from under this if I really shape up. I seek to remove all offenders from my WhatsApp, iMessage and wherever else I've allowed them to loiter. This should be an ongoing practice.

I sat down to write this with such "gusto" in my heart. I've cried out against the cycles and can only pray that this appeases Her.

When I got back to my room after my econ exam. It was manageable, i tried my best. I went to rest my eyes and ended up falling asleep. The content of the dream(s) has been difficult to recall with clarity but I can reproduce the general impression.

I was in a strange land and was fleeing danger. I came upon a girl. She might have had a white dress. I tried to find a way to move upwards, in a Spiderman sort of way. I asked where she was, I guess I must have lost her. She said she was all around me. I looked up again and saw that there were these rope sort of things, kind of like bungee cords. I asked her if she could make more and she did. I made my way upwards with great speed, it was kind of like a trampoline. Above us there was some sort of obstacle. She told me to put my hand up, kind of as if I were trying to high five the sky but the situation was pretty intense so I held it up firmly. When hand met with mass, there was a resounding sound, kind of like a perfect block in kung fu panda. We're in a different location, a kind of half-way place. I felt Her leaving, our play had come to and end, I wanted to go with her. She told me, " A human lifetime is a lot bigger than 2 years, it won't be your time for a while" I'm half-awake, we're nearing the end of things. It's time for farewell. It's 6:22 p.m. I look at my dorm room floor, there are two small figures, both short in stature. I ask her "What are these?" She informs me they're here to wake me up, or something to that effect. The first cutely greets me through gesture, she might have curtsied. I realized the second would be something to scare me, so I wasn't wholly afraid, but as it began to ready its jumpscare I say "OK, fine. I'll just wake up" Too wimpy to abide the scare, I jolt awake, heart racing. It's still 6:22 p.m. I miss her but I get a move-on, somewhat shell-shocked. It kind of felt like a video game or some kind of avante-garde animation.

Now I've started writing again, committed myself to easing the torment I inflict on myself, taken some exciting action but still haven't prepared for class tomorrow at all.

Can't have your cake and eat it too. Not all the time, anyway. That's fine.

I feel kind of silly "Why didn't I think about it this way before?" I lament the embarassingly great waste of time and life but I already feel so relieved.

So, did you hear the news that the Moana series for Disney Plus is now being reworked into a Moana sequel coming this year? Thoughts seeing how between this, Zootopia 2, and Frozen 3 and 4, Disney's really emphasizing sequels a lot this decade with their currently being no announced original idea movies yet from their in-house animated movie studio?

Okay thoughts on Moana 2 first as i'm very glad someone asked this: I'm not against a Moana sequel, nor retooling the tv show into a movie. After all Toy Story 2 and A Goofy Movie, two of my faviorite disney films, were started as DTV projects.

The issue I have more is the timing: Not only was crunch probably involved but it just comes off desperate: Disney had a disapointing year, and thus wanted to bump up something they had close to ready that would put butts in seats. I'm also disappointed that LIn Manuel Miranda isn't coming back as his music was one of the best parts of the original. I will give the film a fair shake... but I do worry disney rushed a good film and it may suffer for it, and if it didn' then the animators did just to get more money.

As for the Sequelgeddon in general.. i'm not a fan of it. Part of it is that 2024 SEEMS rich in sequels: We have Inside Out 2, Kung Fu Panda 4, Megamind Vs the Council of Doom (Which is more a tv movie pilot for Megamind Rules but i'll still count it. ), Despicable Me 4 and now Moana 2. Last year had almost as many with Across the Spider-Verse, Trolls Band Together, Paw Patrol 2, and even more if you count the adult swim finale movies, but we also got Ruby Gilman, Nimona< Mutant Mayhem and Elemental to even things out. And yes 2 of those are based on existing ip but Nimona is visually stunning and it's own take on the graphic novel (if one by it's creator ND Stevenson), and Mutant Mayhem is an even more visually stunning spin on one of the best franchises around after it BADLY needed a new direction with Rise abandoned. There was a pop and life to most animated films last year i'm just not seeing as much in this crop with only Inside Out 2 really being a huge anicipated thing for me.

I'm also not saying sequels are inherently bad. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, is a sequel to a film I barley paid attention to while I watched it and only saw due to word of mouth, but it's one of the best films of the decade. I"m saying, at least in trailers, most of these films feel uninspired. And I feel that way about frozens 3 and 4: You already blew your chance to expand this world with 2, unless Hans gets a pop number a film now you've lost me.

Zootopia 2... isn't NECESSARY.. but is a sequel i'll gladly watch (Same with Moana)> I really liked the first one, and with Nick and Judy's intense chemistry, the massive world and just how hard it can be to change systemic issues, ther'es tons of potetial for a sequel, especailly after George Floyd. Like I said sequels aren't INHERENTLY bad... but these feel like disney is desperate for a hit again instead of remembering their biggest hits have come from giving an original idea a chance.

I do HOPE these films will be good or at least decent. AT the very least i'm hoping we don't get another Ralph Breaks the Internet level of trainwreck as even Frozen 2 as just.. okay (And at least had two banger songs in it to help). But Disney needs to actually try something new and take a risk, something they struggle to do in the best of times and these are very much not their best.

I think that regardless of whether or not Anakin was Knighted at the right age, being recognised as Master at age 22 was never even remotely on the cards.

(I headcanon that while Knighting is a thing that is done by the Council (or another Jedi acting in their stead), being a master is something the individual Jedi works on and achieves over time, and one day the Council or whoever just solemnises the fact that the Jedi became Master. It usually coincides with Knighting a Padawan partly because of tradition, and partly because in order to teach effectively, you have to understand what you’re teaching. See Kung Fu Panda 3 for more on that theme.)

Anakin Skywalker was not, and never would have been, the Jedi’s brightest star.

Because unlike Anakin Skywalker, the Jedi did not measure value by raw power alone.

Even IF Anakin hadn’t fallen so fully and completely and betrayed the family who took him in and raised him and gave him everything with zero hesitation, he wouldn’t have been their brightest star.

Not by the Jedi’s own standards, anyway.

Anakin was one among many and he had certain skills. But so did others.

Sure, Anakin could do some shit with the Force others couldn’t, but so far as we can see, Anakin can’t heal, he can barely teach and certainly has no skill with particularly young people, he has exactly zero political skills, no diplomacy, he’s not all that great undercover. Anakin has a VERY select skill set and there are plenty of other Jedi who would’ve outstripped him in plenty of skills he either just doesn’t have or only barely manages.

Everyone has valuable skills they can contribute to society, Anakin was no better than anyone else in the Jedi Order who had skills Anakin just… doesn’t have. Are they any less of a bright star just because they happen not to have been born with Anakin’s raw power even though they’ve worked for decades to hone their particular skill set to a level that can’t actually be achieved via brute force?

The man can swing a laser sword and fly a plane, hoorah. Everything else he does that looks cool is just that raw power that isn’t actually a skill. Call me when he has more skills that DON’T get utilized to enact lots of violence and THEN try to tell me he was the Jedi’s brightest star. And you’d still be wrong.

Heya anon, thx for the ask ! I think this is a good opportunity to set their relationships with each other too. Here it is !

So basically this modern AU is where Crane takes a part-time job to take care of Tigress for Shifu while he's away and shenanigans ensue. If you've seen most of my modern au stuff, I've also added Mei Ling, The master council, and Su Wu (they're a fun addition!). Most of the characters here haven't really been shown in the au, but will take part in it sooner. I'll also add more backstory since I can’t delve into all of them by drawing it heh..

Rhino, Croc, and Ox are war vets who started a kung fu class inherited from Rhino's father. They met Su (ex-criminal, now helps the government on solving cases) when a case involves the three. Tigress (before Crane takes the job) was their student and usually had to wait until evening to go home (since Shifu was very busy). So the three help to make her comfy while waiting. Su eventually met her one day and gets to know her the more she spends time with them.

Shifu works at Oogway's cooperation (let's just say it's Jade corp cause it sounds cool lol) and becomes his trusted right-hand man. even though they're not related, Oogway has a soft spot for Tigress, even becomes a grandfather figure for her.

Tai lung and Su are connected by the fact they’re criminals and would be explained later.

Even though Shen murdered the panda family, Po actually didn't know about him until mentioned by Su when she opened a case for Shen (basically Rhino got shot and so she's out for revenge. My friend made a drawing of it here !) and so they’re not actually enemies.

Yeah no I lied I got more unpopular opinions that I fidn't share because I didn't want to offend people...that sentiment is over for multiple reasons; the ain one being that this is my blog and I can whatever the fuck I please.

I don't like Rhino

He gets to get away with vandalism -aka just bursting trough buildings/walls as he pleases- because his dad is famous and rich

He is worried that his dad is not proud of him yet he partakes in shady street fighting that masters most likely look down upon even tho he doesn't need the money

Speaking of him taking part in those fights would have been extremely unfair against the other fighters if Ox and Croc didn't have their own "talents" because being the son of a master, he probs got training already

Speaking for Ox and Croc when saying they don't fight for money was irresponsible. Unlike him Ox and Croc actually needed the money and if it wasn't for them ending up having a rather luxurious life by "fighting for honor" (oh the irony) Ox and Croc would have had no money whatsoever.

Bonus: Ox finding out the weak-point of the Wu Vortex was the connection was not "tactcal brilliance"- it was common sense and fucking obvious.

Favorite thing(s) about SotM

My babies, duh. There is a reason I came into this fandom spamming nothig but Wu content. They have so much potential for all kinds of stories and art. Also femal villains deserve more recognition. Also also they are the only bad guys in this franchise, who don't treat the people workijg with/for them like crap; aka Su loves Wing and Wan to hell and back and it's weirdly wholesome.

The added patterns onto the background. It's the kind of animation I can always simp for, no matter how often I watch it.

On the animation note: the Wu Vortex. Because fast moving, shiny lights are neat.
