This week I got back to practicing kung fu. I have always been back and forth with it, the longest I’ve practiced was one and a half year. But I seemed to always convince myself that I’d have to stop for some reason. I’m very much the kind o person who can focus in one thing at a time, and end up hyper focusing in one area of my life (normally work) and forget about life itself. Actually when I stop to think about it, it makes sense that the period I’ve practiced kung fu the most was right after the pandemic after I got laid off from my previous job. I wasn’t working but had some savings and decided to just keep on training.

Well, then I started working again, and started a new concept art course, and suddenly I couldn’t prioritise Kung Fu practice anymore, besides the monthly payment got a bit more expensive, which was enough excuse for me. I stopped training again, tried going to the gym but it lasted about 3 months…

This Tuesday was the first time I practiced kung fu after 7 months. And it made a huge difference on how I’m feeling, and functioning.

After some days as a sedentary I started feeling very tired, moody and feeling a lot of pain in my lower back. Besides that, I was unmotivated to do anything and my mind was blurred… it was like I couldn’t focus or do anything properly. I was starting to feel frustrated about my low productivity and didn’t couldn’t put the pieces together to understand why I was feeling so bad, even started to think I was dragging myself back to depression because of some hormonal issues that I might not be aware of. After I went on my journal, and checked the dates and the entries, I realised my mood started to swing after I stopped going to Kung fu practice, and the sharpest changes happened after I stopped doing any physical activity at all.

isn’t it funny how a simple thing like working out or just practicing physical activity can help your body regulate your hormones and help you think clearly? Sometimes all you need is to punch some punching bags and feel the pain of your muscles working.

Since I started journaling all those cycles I tend to repeat have become more clear to me, and I can always work on them so they become more and more narrow to the point that I have a consistency, and brake the bad habits that put me back into self sabotage.

I can think clear again, and got back to my career plan. I’ve been able to wake up early, and I feel more motivated and capable. All thanks to Kung fu.

So anyway, speaking of Dreamlight Valley, last night i had a dream about it except it was Dreamworks instead of Disney and here's what I remember about that fucking monstrosity:

Shrek is the first villager you unlock naturally, and every time you hang out with him, that shitty midi version of All Star plays in the background

Donkey is there too and he offers to make you waffles (he never does)

Fiona was also there. That is all I remember about Fiona

Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws were villagers but their house was almost always inaccessible, mostly because i presume there were in there having crazy cat sex at all times

Will Smith Fish from Shark Tale moved in but immediately died because he just appeared in the plaza and had no water so he flopped around until he died thank god

The two dudes from El Dorado were there and were roommates and I thought that was pretty gay but where the fuck was Chel

Every Hour on the Hour King Julian from Madagascar showed up in the plaza and hosted a Mandatory Dance Party

Barry B Benson from Bee Movie was there but every time you spoke to him he would quote the Bee Movie Script in its entirety before getting to any actual quest dialogue

Instead of Remy's restaurant, Po from Kung Fu Panda hosted a dojo where he teaches you to beat the fuck out of any villagers you don't like

Hiccup and Astrid were there and were roommates (Good for them, they're canonically married after all) and so was Toothless but he was Concerningly Off Model I was scared

Megamind was there. That is all I remember about Megamind.

The Penguins of Madagascar weren't technically villagers but they kept showing up all over the valley to spy on me

Boss Baby showed up at one point and I kicked his ass thanks to the kung fu Po taught me

The game ended when Moses from Prince of Egypt showed up and called upon God to smite the village and my game cartrige caught fire irl

Some movies that stylized their animation before Spider-Verse in 2018.

Fantasia 2000 by Disney in 1999. It takes CGI and 2D animation and mix them together.

The Peanuts Movie 2016 by Blue Sky's. It was mostly 3D, but the expressions and motions had 2D in them. Which is beyond creative because they only had dots for eyes and a line for a mouth. Which limits expressions, but the 2D lines they had, like when they fall or jump, really add expressions to the charaters. The background looked very flat as if the characters were standing in front of a painted scenery and were performing on stage. Super cute.

Captain Underpants 2017. By Dreamworks. Same as Peanuts' Movie. Made to look like they were in a book, and the movements were very Loony Toon style.

Trolls franchise 2016 by Dreamworks. I can go on for hours on how creative this franchise got with their animation. They used scrapbook materials to build their world. The water is fabric, the waterfall are streamers, the waves are marbles, the sand is glitter, the forest is fuzzy, the ground looks like a carpet, the fire looks like troll hair, the Funk Trolls kingdom are mirror's and reflective material, the Rock Trolls kingdom is leather, the Classical Trolls kingdom are cotton balls, it's endless creativity. They even hired a professional to sculpt a forest with fabrics and glitter so they could get an idea of how they were gonna make this world. AND they created a whole new program just to animate glitter. The same way Spider-Verse had to create one to animate Hobbie. Yeah, Spider-Verse was not the first film to do that. It was Trolls 2016. And then the franchise adds in live action and 2D animation here and there, and that makes it more unique and gives an 80s style to the film.

And then we have other films that also made their world building look unique. Book of Life made their characters look like traditional puppets in Mexico. Lego Movie made it look like toys were moving around. Like if a kid were actually playing with them. Is their any smearing in the Lego Movie? I swear every frame is clear with no stretching or smearing.

Finally, the one that I feel like deserves a lot of credit because it was the one that was experimenting with 2D and 3D animation waaaaaaaay before Spider-Verse.

This is just the intro to the 3rd film.

Kung Fu Panda franchise 2008 by Dreamworks. The 1st film has a small dash of 2D in Shifus flash back. I think. But the 2nd film in 2011 100% has that mix of 2D and 3D. Epically during the training montage for Po and Shen. The lighting looked 2D on 3D modles. And there were times in the 3rd film where it was meant to look like Chinese art. And you see this combination throughout the entire film. The animated shorts are meant to look like traditional Chinese art as well. And they look great!

I have no problem with Spider-Verse being the one who finally broke the mold and inspired other animated films to do the same. But can we acknowledge that Kung Fu Panda was the one that was experimenting with it the most? Unless there's one that I'm over looking way before 2008. But the Dreamworks Kung Fu Panda franchise was the one that walked so Spider-Verse could run!
