An Arizona man was arrested Tuesday after he was captured on surveillance footage chasing a 6-week-old kitten around a parking lot and repeatedly kicking it, police said.
Nicholas Calfy, 23, reportedly faces felony charges of animal cruelty, drug possession, and drug paraphernalia possession.
The alleged kitten abuse took place in a parking lot in Mesa, about 20 miles east of Phoenix. The video shows Calfy taking off his shirt before chasing the kitten around the parking lot, police said. Calfy then corners the kitten, covers it with his shirt and kicks it multiple times, according to the police report.
MISSOURI MAN GOT CATS ON CRAIGSLIST TO KILL THEM, OFFICIALS SAY
Nicholas Calfy was arrested this week on suspicion of kicking a kitten, authorities say. (Mesa Police Department)(Mesa Police Department)
“He repositioned the kitten back into the corner between each kick. The kitten was then observed in a dazed condition and could no longer run or defend itself from the defendant,” the police report says. “The kitten was observed laying on the ground trembling.”
Calfy was later seen looking at the kitten while smoking a cigarette and providing no medical assistance, police said. Staff members found the kitten alive in the same position eight hours later and took it to a veterinary center.
The vet said the kitten had suffered head trauma, trauma-induced hyphema, and neurologic tremors. The animal survived and was taken in by a family, KTVK-TV of Phoenix reported.
Calfy admitted it was him when shown a photo, the police report said. He said he was drunk at the time and didn’t remember a kitten from the above time and date, according to the report.

A search of his backpack yielded a piece of foil “that contained a usable amount of white crystal substance,” which tested positive for methamphetamine, police said. Calfy was arrested but later released on his own recognizance. He’s due back in court later this month, KTVK reported.

A gay couple in Arizona says that their Pride flag has been repeatedly vandalized, and now their Homeowners Association wants them to remove it. Jared and Tim Deluca of Queen Creek, AZ, first posted a variation on the traditional Pride flag in December modeled after the American flag, with 50 stars and some of its 13 stripes cast in bright rainbow colors. It flew on a flagpole behind the married couple’s home in full view of a busy street. The couple told CBS affiliate KTVK that they wanted to show people that it was ok to be themselves and encourage others not to hide their identity. But their message has been met with repeated harassment. “The first thing that happened was one day I was outside in the back patio and I heard people screaming slurs from their car while passing behind our house,” Jared said. “Which is funny because they didn’t know I was there. They were literally screaming at my house for the sake of screaming at it.” @jdeluca.realtor UPDATE: Now we’ve been attacked. #update #hatecrime #lgbt #fyp #viral #queencreekaz #pride #riseup #bethechange #arizonatok #homophobia #wewontbesilenced #youcantstopus ♬ original sound – Jared Deluca | Realtor® Days later, the flag was slashed. After the Delucas replaced the original with a traditional rainbow flag, that one was stolen. It was later found on the street a few blocks away and returned to the couple. @jdeluca.realtor Twice in one week! This time in broad daylight. #update #hatecrime #lgbt #fyp #viral #queencreekaz #pride #riseup #bethechange #arizonatok #homophobia #wewontbesilenced #youcantstopus ♬ original sound – Jared Deluca | Realtor® Jared alleges that after he and Tim replaced that flag, a neighbor driving past their home attempted to intimidate him and his mother. “It freaked us out pretty good. They took off down to the end of the road, went around the cul-de-sac, came back, came up in front of the house again, stared us down, and then took off, tires screeching into the community,” he said. The couple has filed two police reports, but the harassment didn’t end there. MetroWeekly reports that someone posting on a community Facebook group asked whether the Ocotillo Heights Homeowners Association had rules dictating the types of flags that can be flown outside homes, citing their desire to fly a Nazi flag. Soon after, the Delucas received a letter from the Ocotillo Heights HOA claiming the couple had violated HOA rules by making a change to the exterior of their property. “Please remove your flag and restore your property to its original condition,” the letter, which included photos of the couple’s Pride flag, stated. @jdeluca.realtor UPDATE: Our HOA is trying to force us to take down our pride flag… What do you think? #fyp #lgbt #prideflag #queencreekaz #community #violation #cantstopwontstop #riseup #speakup #censorship #arizona #bethechange #question #whatdoyouthink ♬ original sound – Jared Deluca | Realtor® As KTVK notes, it is not uncommon for HOAs to restrict where homeowners can attach a flagpole to their property. Jared said that when he reached out to the community manager, he was told that the Pride flag is not covered under the Arizona Revised Statutes for flag displays. Over the weekend, Jared posted another TikTok video, claiming to have confirmed that the neighbor who posted the Facebook message about wanting to fly a Nazi flag was the same person who allegedly attempted to intimidate him while driving past the couple’s home. He also claims to have been told by another neighbor that the same person has been bragging to people in the community about harassing the Delucas. @jdeluca.realtor UPDATE: Proof that we’re being targeted from a very supportive neighbor. #fyp #hoa #hoawars #lgbt #malekarens #community #harassmentawareness #targeted #pride #prideflag #queencreekaz #realtor #bullyingawareness #fightback #arizona #viral #trending #news #bethechange ♬ original sound – Jared Deluca | Realtor® Jared told KTVK that he and his husband intend to continue flying their flag. http://dlvr.it/ShZzkV

After speaking with them outside of a convenience store, a man was captured on surveillance video shooting at two Phoenix police officers. However, the officers are currently on leave and being investigated after cellphone video shows one of them punching the suspect. What about the details? On Thursday, Phoenix authorities released surveillance video that showed the suspect shooting at two officers from a patrol car after speaking to them outside a convenience shop. Fox News reported. On Oct. 27, KTVK TV reported that officers were leaving QuikTrip at Buckeye Road and 59th Avenue. KTVK was told by police that Denman continued to speak to the officers as they entered the patrol car. Denman was told by the officers that they were on a phone call and needed to leave. KPNX TV said. Image source : Fox News video screenshot KPNX reported that Denman fired two shots from a handgun at officers as they pulled out of the parking area. Police said one bullet struck the ground while the other hit the spotlight on the patrol car. KTVK reported that the second bullet also reached the door frame. Image source : Fox News video screenshot KPNX documents claim that a witness claimed to have told investigators that the suspect shot the shots in an attempt to get their attention. What next? KTVK reported that police also released video bodycam footage showing officers following Denman into the convenience shop with their guns drawn and then arresting him. One bodycam video shows an officer telling the suspect that he will blow his [expletive removed] head off...if you make any other." Then he stops speaking. The most detailed visual account of the arrest seems to have been from a cellphone camera, which Fox News claimed was recorded by a clerk at a store. Before officers handcuff Denman, the cellphone footage shows him on his knees with the officers commanding him to get down. They kick him in the head and then ask where his gun is. Later, it was discovered that the suspect had placed the gun on a shelf upon entering the store. Image source : Fox News video screenshot Denman was then struck by both officers with their guns. They ordered him to surrender his hands and soon one of the officers handcuffed the suspect on the ground. Also, the cellphone video shows the officer kicking the handcuffed man in the back as he tries to move his body. The officer then placed his knee on the back of the suspect. The suspect's head is covered in blood spots. Soon, the suspect starts to whine and beg for help from the police. At this point, the other officer shouts at him to "shut up the [expletive removed] up!" As the suspect's pockets and purse are checked, the officers pull him to his feet and poke him in the leg with a gun barrel. Here is a compilation of surveillance videos, bodycam videos and cellphone videos: What happened to the suspect? KTVK reported that Denman was taken to hospital and booked into jail for aggravated assault as well as weapons charges. According to another story from KPNX TV, Denman has had several other encounters with the law in the past. According to documents, Denman used a fake $50 bill at a mall to get away from an off-duty security guard in 2007. When he was stopped by the officer, Denman pulled out his gun and pointed it at him. KPNX reported that Denman later pleaded guilty two counts of aggravated assault. What happened to the officers?" KTVK reported that Denman's arrest resulted in two officers being placed on paid administrative leave. One had six years of experience, the other was new to the job for less than one year. According to KTVK, the police are conducting an internal investigation and criminal investigation into Denman's actions. Michael Sullivan, the new interim chief,
stated that the department "acted immediately” after learning of potential misconduct by officers during the arrest. KTAR TV reported. According to KTVK, Sullivan stated that "What's shown in the video isn't how we train" and was not consistent with Phoenix Police Department core values. KNXV TV reports that Sullivan invited Rachel Mitchell, interim Maricopa County Attorney, to view the cellphone video from the arrest and the officers' bodycam videos as well as surveillance video. Interestingly, Sullivan was sworn to the day following the shooting and arrest. KTAR-TV stated in a separate article that Sullivan has experience in police reform and is expected to remain in his interim position between one and two year -- that is the length of a Department of Justice investigation into possible civil rights violations or abuses of power by police departments.
