Po diskuzích s některými lidmi z mého okolí se obracím i na čumblr. Od té doby co jsem začal studovat informatiku (dobře není to moc dlouho, ale možná o to horší to je) si uvědomuji, jak špatná je počítačová gramotnost běžné populace a tím myslím i své vrstevníky, akademicky angažované lidi a podobně ne pouze starší generace. Také vidím jak i přesto že jsem chodil na gympl, který nás má obecně připravit na víceméně všechny vysokoškolské obory, byla výuka v tomto směru zcela nedostačující (nebo spíše vlastně neexistovala). Proto mě dost zajímá, jaký máte pohled na výuku informatiky a jestli byste uvítali udělat z ní plnohodnotný středoškolský či rovnou základkový předmět. Myslím tím například pořádně probrat hardware, naučit se základní funkcionality operačního systému, základní protokoly, třeba HTML a základy nějakého začátečnicky přívětivějšího programovacího jazyku jako Python a samozřejmě taky nějaké bezpečnostní zásady.

Sice mám udělaný poll and budu rád za jakoukoliv diskuzi v komentářích či tags.

Hey do you have any book recs for Byzantine history in general or for people just starting to learn about it?

Hello – so sorry this took so long! I'm finishing up a research project and haven't had a chance to log into Tumblr. While I have always, and will always, love the Byzantines, my job dictates that my focus is on the Tudors, all the time, so I apologize if some of these aren't completely up to date. Nevertheless, I'm happy to provide clarification on any of my suggestions and would be open to answering any questions you might have.

Bear in mind that the history of the "Byzantine Empire" spans a thousand years, and encompasses varying periods that differ significantly. It would probably be beneficial to nail down which period you're interested in studying/learning more about and going from there (though for a comprehensive overview I recommend the Cambridge History or Byzantium by Cyril Mango, both of which I've cited below).

[The Frisland flag. Symbol of our land in cloth. What is its history? What does it mean?

The name that we call it is 'the Blueband'. It shows a field of gold and over it a blue line from top-left to bottom-right. This blue line is a 'blue-band', a symbol of Frislandic leaders. It began as a shepherd's cloak, similar to those still worn today (it is not known why blue is the colour of choice).

If a shepherd is a leader to his flock, so an elected leader is like a shepherd for the people. Because of this, burghers began wearing a band of blue cloth as part of their office. The picture depicts Mark Jameson One-eyed, a mercenary leader from Godmec.

Over the years, the band became smaller, till now it is a strip of cloth. Here is a picture showing the first female president of Frisland, Mary Matthewson Wise.

On the flag, then, the blueband signifies our elections and our freedom from tyranny, and safeguards the riches of our country (the golden field).]

So thanks to this song, a plotbunny has been hopping inside my head lately. I have been wondering how I could adapt this song to Akhenaten’s backstory. Now, it would be quite metaphorical thanks to her being a 40k OC. Dunno yet if this lore is temporary, but here it is. I am open to suggestions on how to improve it.

Analysis is under the cut for lenght and triggering content; ie. child murder and suicide-by-proxy.

Akhenaten was the daughter of a king of Gaznir. After being cast out by her family for being a psyker, she was rescued by the XVth legion when they brought the world under compliance. The then-child had no qualms with throwing her loyalty to her old family and throwing her lot with the Thousand Sons, who would become her new family. Years down the line, Gaznir rises in rebellion agaisnt the Imperium, with her old birth-siblings being among the leaders. The Imperium, who doesn’t know about Akhenaten’s blood ties to them, sends the Thousand Sons to put down the rebellion. And once Akhenaten arrives to the planet she realizes her relatives are behind it. Yet she has no qualms about following Magnus’ orders to destroy the city in which they were, thus leading to their deaths.

The thousand sons were well known for their use of psychic powers/magic, which earned them the distrust of many.

In the song, the poisoner line refers to how Medea poisoned Glauce, who was the woman with whom Jason cheated on her. Considering how Magnus and the Thousand Sons threw their lot with Lorgar/ the Word Bearers and Horus / the Sons of Horus despite them being the ones responsible for the destruction of Prospero and the enslavement of its civilian population for turning them into rogue psykers during the Horus Heresy, they would symbolize Glauce.

If memory doesn’t fail me, they joined the traitor’s side out of desperation for they wished to find all of Magnus’ soul fragments. My knowledge of 30k lore is patchy, so I don’t know how far they were in the search before they said “fuck it we all”. As a result, I am unsure if Akhenaten ever knew of the reasons for the deal. But even if she knew, she would still find it unforgivable due to how the Legion protected and nurtured Prospero’s population. Considering chances are the Word Bearers and the Sons of Horus mistreated their rogue psykers, Akhenaten would interpret the legion’s actions as an approval of it.

I do know Akhenaten dropped the legion faster than a hot potato after she witnessed Ahriman sacrificing Hathor to summon a Lord of Change, so if she witnessed the rogue psyker’s abuse chances are it was after she left.

The reason why she abandoned the legion was because Hathor and Ahzek were her adoptive parents. And if Ahriman was capable of doing that to Hathor, then what would he do to her?

But perhaps a better reason would be their actions during the Siege of Terra. Conjuring daemons and using black magic to terrorize the planet. After all, Akhenaten fought for the Imperium, thus making her be in the receiving end of that.

Or maybe she turned agaisnt them because of all of the above.

EDIT: Damn, can’t believe I forgot about the First and Second Rubrics of Ahriman. And how thanks to the Second one, survivors from the First became randomly rubricc’ed. Yet another reason for her hate and anger towards the XVth.

To make matters worse, after learning of the first rubric she fell into a deep depression which led to her not getting out of bed for three months. And then she pulled a suicide by proxy via fighting an old thousand sons love who got chaos-spawned thanks to flesh change from a magical mishap. She survived the fight, but faced dire consecuences because of throwing magical precautions to the wind.

Her feelings towards Horemheb were mixed. On one side he was her first love, but after falling to Tzeentch he tried to swindle her.

And as a revenge for the capture and enslavement of the prosperine, the corruption of half of the legions, the burning of Prospero, the Betrayal at Calth, various atrocities and the death of Sanguinius, Akhenaten under false pretenses gives poisoned gifts to members of the XVIth and XVIIth legions, resulting in their deaths.

The first and second lines would refer to how she became Magnus’ gene-child once she got implanted with the XVth’s geneseed. Magnus’ main trait was his arrogance, which was one of the factors which led to the legion’s fall.

The “crowned queen with a crown of blood” line would be about how many years after the Great Scouring she killed a Son of Horus and took over his warband (but that’s a long story.)

We already know who Glauce is, but who would be Mermeros and Pheres? Thousand Sons who were created using Akhenaten’s geneseed.

(Considering Akhenaten belonged to the Order of the Jackal, and they were the ones in charge of selecting, transforming and raising the aspirants and neophytes into astartes, chances are Mermeros and Pheres were astartes in whose creation she was involved. Because they were made using her geneseed and she raised them, she considered herself their mother.

And they were lost in the warp during the Horus Heresy, being spat out many years later.)

"Mé přání je..." Démon, pokušitel světů, se naklonil dopředu. Hořel dychtivostí si vyslechnout další z marných přeludů, za které lidé tak rádi zaplatí svou duší. Svého vyvolatele převyšoval o dobrého půl metru. Stáli v zapadlé uličce Žižkova, kromě pouličních lamp byl jediným zdrojem světla zvláštní fialový oheň, který koloval démonovi v žilách. Vyzařoval z hloubi jeho chřtánu, když se zlověstně zachechtal. Lemoval skoro desítku různě velkých a tvarovaných rohů, které pekelník nasbíral jako vyznamenání za dlouholetou službu. Sypal se na zem z jeho majestátní hřívy, když potřásal hlavou nad směšností lidstva. Tenhle človíček byl drobný, odhodlaný. Před podzimním chladem je chránil dlouhý, původně černý kabát. Teď byla jeho barva sotva poznat přes množství barevných nášivek a odznáčků, které ho pokrývaly. Snad mu mělo zlověstné světýlko v očích toho člověka sloužit jako výstraha. Možná potkal příliš arogantních smrtelníků nato, aby je bral vážně. "...aby jsi se proměnil v člověka." Cože. COŽE?! Démon na člověka hleděl s nevěřícným pohledem v očích, jazyk zavázaný úlekem. Dlažební kostky temně zaduněly, když na ně dopadl pár ulomených kostí. Jeho největší pýcha, zatočené dračí rohy, ležely ve špíně a prachu města. "Tos podělal," zavrčel démon bezmocně, zatímco se na zem sypalo vyznamenání za vyznamenáním. Beraní, kozí a býčí rohy, sobí parůžky a nakonec i jeho nejčerstvější - losí. "Nemyslím si." Člověk ho pozoroval bez náznaku jakékoliv emoce, snad kromě očekávání. Stopy hněvu a zármutku v jejich tváři se daly nalézt už jen ve vráskách a ztracených letech. Stáli nehnutě, zatímco démon se začal svíjet v bolestech. Stále ještě to byl démon, přestože mu zbývaly pouhé minuty existence. Zaostřil pohled na zem, kterou pokrývaly chumáče jeho kdysi tak udržované hřívy. Při další vlně nevolnosti dočasně ztratil zrak. Příliš dobře však cítil, co se děje. Člověk, zahnaný čímsi za hranice lidskosti, si tiše přidřepnul vedle svíjejícího se démona. Konečně onen - teď už nerohatý - vyzvrátil zdroj oné tajemné záře. Starodávná, téměř vyhaslá hvězda přání. Učinila z něj jednoho z mála démonů, kteří mohli činit pakty se smrtelníky. A teď byla pryč. Člověk ji důkladně očistil, zabalil do látky a zvednul se k odchodu. Démon se po něm zoufale vrhnul, ale jeho nohy měly méně kloubů, než pamatoval. Člověku, jemuž stačilo o krok poodstoupit, přistál rovnou u nohou. Démon - démon? - tvor si uvědomil, jaká zima mu v nahém lidském těle najednou je. "...Tohle je věru tristní. Bez sestry nestojíš za nic.... Tady máš, než si to rozmyslím." Člověku... Pravděpodobně člověku v očích probleskla záře nachlup podobná hvězdě, ale tentokrát měla barvu všech odstínů modré. Čerstvě vzniklý tvor se nalezl v teplém svetru, páru bot a pořádných džínech. Když vzhlédl zpět k bytosti, buď aby jí poděkoval, nebo ji rozsápal na kousky, zjistil, že se rozhodovat už nemusí. Vypařila se jako sněhová vločka a nechala ho samotného uprostřed Prahy.
