OH I NEVER POSTED THE PRUNE BUNS HERE!!!!
This is how my family (I'm 4th gen USAmerican, descended from Slovak immigrants) makes kolaches, unlike how most that I see here in Texas or other places with Czech and Slovak heritage. They tend to be open faced, like a Danish pastry. We also only make prune filling, but you can make a filling out of any fruit really! The cinnamon really brings out the rich flavor of the prune.

This is my dad's favorite family dessert, tied with my grandma's lemon cheesecake (which I'll have to make some day), so needless to say he was very jealous :)

Okay, the Dunkin near me had ‘kolache’ on their menu. My stepdad is 2nd generation Czech so I was fucking ready.
But they are just gloridied pigs in a blanket. Not yeasty pastry with a fruit center! 😭
Did some research and apparently at least in Texas the blanket pigs are what they refer to using ‘kolache’. Got me curious

Dear Gus & Magnus,
Today was candy-making day on the Compound. I am always an advocate for less candy and more baked goods, especially kolaches, so this year Nana gave Mom and me a lesson in how to make them while everyone else dipped things in chocolate.
As always, you two had a ball with your cousins, which makes me incredibly happy.
After everyone loaded up to leave, Nene wanted to take you to Daniel Park to run under the lights, so we did that for a while and then stopped for Mexican food on our way out of town. It was a good day, but a long one. I was astounded that neither of you fell asleep on the way home.
Dad.

I haven't gotten my pastee genes done, but both my pastee parents have. I'm Slavic (Slovak???) enough that my dad's been getting weird about it in his retirement. It's mostly his side, my mom's side is a far more thorough mayo melange.
My grandpa cussed a lot in the language and threw around songs and phrases well into his advanced years. I was told that side of the family is Czechoslovakian which I know is an outdated label from the region, and from what I understand there's a handful of languages under this umbrella bamboozling me such that I can't remember which applies. Maybe I can make up for shame of my ethnic ignorance by doing this squat.
Can I do it? Yeah.
Does it hurt? Yes. Though I am moderately flexible, I just don't stretch enough for my 30sum body doing all the outside stuff with the chickens and forest hopping in and outta my house on stilts, truck beds, and shed on blocks.
okay new ask game. what's your ethnicity and can you slav squat (squat directly down with your heels touching the floor).

✨BAKING WITH KAMARIA✨
I saw another author do something similar and I wanted to share traditional recipes for the food that’s mentioned throughout Secrets of the Moon. While my novel is a re-imagined history, it is still based in real life Old Bohemia in the Czech Republic. Keeping that in mind, I did a ton of research into ensuring I portrayed the food, places and people correctly.
One of the first times in the novel that we see food mentioned is at the festival of Obzinky when Kamaria and Lahahana share a kolach. I’ve included a recipe for traditional kolach by a Czech baker and a short history of Obzinky in the newsletter listed in my linktree below! ✨

Holiday season visiting after Christmas Day seems like an obvious act of penance. Like, I wouldn't dream of sitting down to a turkey dinner or watching It's A Wonderful Life with you but a casual gathering over coffee and kolache? Sure . . .
