Chapter 8

Summary: For Kagome Higurashi, the winds of change blew fast and hard, leaving her tossed about and her world upside down. They were best avoided. But sometimes change comes on the gentle currents of a warm breeze, and before you know it you’ve gone too far down stream to turn back. She should have known; She’d always associated Koga with wind.

Note: HOOOOOOO BOY. Listen. I never ever ever intended to drop this fic like this. I have lots of chapters written and waiting but Life got real intense for a while And sometimes that’s just how the cookie has to crumble. But we’re back in action.

“The hell you are!” Inuyasha shouted, hand gripping tessaiga’s hilt, ready to draw it at a moment’s notice.

“You’re damn right I am! If you’re gonna be protecting that miko, then someone needs to be around to protect this one.” Koga replied, pointing at Kagome.

“Koga I can take care of myself.”

“Absolutely not!” He yelled, and Kagome felt her ire bloom. “The monk and Taija have each other’s backs. Inuyasha and his Miko have each other’s… but who’s gonna have you’re back, Kagome?”

She looked at the ground and considered.

That made a lot more sense than an insistence that she needed a baby sitter, even Inuyasha had trouble refuting such a claim.

“I can protect them both!” He tried, but Sango and Miroku both jumped to counter that Koga’s claim had a lot of merit, and the Inuhanyo’s eyes widened in both shock and rage.

“Now wait just a damn-“

“Alright!” She cut into the maelstrom, “alright Koga, you can come. And Ginta and Hakkaku, too, when they catch up. I think it’s a good idea.

Sango and Miroku shared a look she couldn’t decipher.

Kikyo barely blinked.

Inuyasha’s face went so red he rivaled fire rat, but Koga…

Koga glowed.

I was so blessed this year on my birthday to receive a number of wonderful fandom gifts, including several pieces of beautiful art. As thanks, I've been working on some little stories inspired by the art, and I'll be posting them over the next few days.

First up is "All the Ways That Matter" (Rated M), which is a KogKag story inspired by this beautiful KogKag piece by @mrfeenysmustache. When I saw it, I immediately thought about a KogKag wedding story, and I can only hope that the story is worthy of the art. He tried to keep his voice even, but the threat of having to send Kagome away a second time was warring with his desire to pull her into his arms.

Chapter 9

Rating: Explicit Status: In Progress Summary: In Kagome’s new neighborhood, there’s a wall. It’s been there for years, this massive sheet of concrete stretching across the land, separating a memorial from the neighboring church. One day on her afternoon walks, curiosity has Kagome seeking out the history behind this piece, why it exists, and what the stories around it mean. She didn’t expect the stories to be real.

Chapter Excerpt:

The door opened behind her, footsteps coming in. Miroku and Sango got over here quick, considering how bad traffic could be on a Friday afternoon. Turning to greet them, she froze at the sight of silver hair looking over the papers on the coffee table.

He was in jeans and a tee, very much not his work scrubs, and the last person she expected to see. After Wednesday, she couldn’t imagine pulling him back into this and didn’t understand why he was there. She distinctly recalled Touga telling him to leave it all alone, so why would he be standing there reading over the copies she’d received from Shiori?

“Dad called me,” he started saying, not looking up from the table. “Myouga called him as soon as he knew you were heading over and wanted someone else to be here. I was the closest one.”

Amber eyes looked up at her, weary, but friendly, and he offered her a self-deprecating smile. “I’m just as surprised as you are.”

The Silence Between

The canopy was bathed in moonlight, casting a soft silver glow that created a dance of shadows from the whispering leaves upon the forest undergrowth. The waterfall shimmered, reflecting the stars as it crashed against the rocks below. It was a beautiful haven teeming with vibrant flora and fauna. Fireflies danced along the water's edge, winking in and out of view.

The eastern Ookami tribe's hidden den was now a secluded haven teeming with life, a stark contrast to six years ago.

Kouga looked on with wistful azure eyes. The silence of the night lacked the usual distractions of his tribe's bustling activity. No longer did he hear the trill of pups' laughter or the hushed gossip of their watchful mothers, nor did he have to break up any fights. The night was his alone, filled with nothing but his own thoughts and regrets.

So, Kouga, like usual, found himself lost in a sea of memories of the time before she entered his life. He recalled a time when this mountain was barren and devoid of life, a forgotten patch of earth that had been ravaged by the savage Birds of Paradise and littered with the corpses of his people. 

Until the shattering of the Shikon no Tama and its fragments scattering the land, the ookami demon tribe and the Gokurakuchō demons had battled over the eastern mountain territory rights for decades. The ookami had taken the foothills, digging out caves and large inner connecting caverns to protect their pups from the gokurakuchō ruling the skies. 

He remembered how harsh it was to grow up underground, to only ever feel the breeze via a draft coming from the vents, or when he stole away to the entrance of the cave—working up the courage to step outside, to feel the sun upon his skin and the wind against his fur. He was quickly returned to the deepest part of the caves, where he was confined until he was old enough to hunt, fight - run.

The gokurakuchō were gluttonous creatures, eating anything that moved. From the waist up, they resembled blue harpies, their lower half looking like a large pigeon with additional large eyes and a mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth. It was imperative to be quick and deadly, or you'd find yourself the target of the gokurakuchō.  

Winters became more arduous by the year, and some were either killed or starving while others left in search of refuge, unable to survive under the persistent threat of death.

Kouga's father was killed trying to protect their tribe when Kouga was still just a pup. He and his mother immediately stole away that same night for her birth tribe, where Kouga trained tirelessly to become strong enough to reclaim his father's position as alpha. When he was an established warrior in the north and old enough to protect himself, he returned to his birth tribe. Kouga found that it had turned to eating humans from nearby villages. Kouga never participated and did not have the time to abolish the practice when he took over the alpha role.

He had barely been the tribe's alpha for a year when pink glittering Shards streaked across the sky. Kouga's fate forever changed when he was struck by a shard that instantly made him stronger, and he immediately began to seek out more. In his search, he soon discovered the monster of the gokurakuchō, their leader: two brothers who shared the same bird body. His people's deaths increased tenfold shortly after.

Every clash with the leader was fraught with death. Kouga and the leader were too evenly matched when it came to strength, but that monster had the advantage due to his wings. Kouga became even more desperate to rid the territory of the gokurakuchō and save his people. He sent the women and children to other tribes, led raids to destroy nests, and sought out more jewel shards, all his actions leading him to the encounter of the girl who changed everything for him—Kagome.

A smile formed on Kouga's lips as he remembered how his tribe survived solely because of Kagome's help. Without her, this place would have remained barren and lifeless, a grim reminder of the destruction wrought by the gokurakuchō's unrelenting carnage. 

He'd been tracking a runaway wolf who had stolen a shard, killing the wolf who had found it- it would have been his fourth shard. The wolf was a notorious troublemaker and the leading advocate for eating humans, as food was still sparse; Kouga could only discourage the practice until the gokurakuchō were permanently removed from the mountain.

Even surrounded by the destroyed village that had been ravaged by that wolf and those who had followed after, even with the scent of blood and dirt, Kouga was consumed by her fresh, clean scent. His eyes were pinned to her clear sapphire eyes. He was enraptured by her from that very moment, his soul calling out for hers.

"He has three shards." Even her voice captivated him, a sweet velvet melody that had him desperate to hear more, to hear his name upon her lips. "One in his right arm and one in each leg." But then he registered what she said.

Kouga left without a fight.  Not because he doubted his strength but because Kouga knew he couldn't win against the half-breed's sword. But he left knowing her scent and name, Kagome. And it was engraved upon his heart from that moment forward.

Of course, he had a mission to ensure the safety of his pack by killing the gokurakuchō. He didn't care how pretty Kagome was, or the weird connection he felt; all he cared about was that this human girl would be the key to getting rid of the leader of the gokurakuchō. (Knowing what he knew now and what kind of person she was, Kouga wished he had simply told her his situation. She would have helped regardless of Inuyasha's resistance.)

So he trailed the group from a distance, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Then he kidnapped Kagome, bringing her back to the dens, where she witnessed the worsening conditions of his territory.

His instincts pushed him to protect her - provide for her. So he commanded his wolves to protect her, threatening anyone who thought to harm her or the kitsune. Kouga also hunted for her, looking to quell his instincts. And it was during that time that he fell madly, deeply, in love with her. While he was out hunting, she risked everything to save the small kitsune that had been grabbed onto her when he stole Kagome away from her group.

Their time together had been fleeting, spanning only two days, but it was enough for Kouga to realize that Kagome was more than just a human priestess—she was strong and loyal, and she was the one that he desired as his mate.

Weeks passed, filled with longing and nursing the wounds left from battles against the Birds of Paradise until Kouga's path intersected with Kagura, an underling of Naraku wielding a corrupted jewel shard. Blinded by rage and loss, Kouga believed Inuyasha to be responsible for the slaughter of his pack until Kagome saved him from himself and the corruption of the shard, reigniting the flames of love within him.

Only after speaking with his mother after Kagome had left his side to be with her own wandering pack did he come to know what those instincts were. Kagome was his destiny, the one chosen by his soul to be his one and only mate. 

His mother had been so happy for him. 

Years had passed since their first encounter, which had ignited the flames of love within Kouga's soul, Kagome unknowingly drawing him in like a moth to a flame. But after 6 years of pinning, of countless attempts to woe and court her, Kouga had no choice but to accept that she would never be his, and his love was destined to be unrequited. Yet it didn't stop him from yearning for more and regretting the great love that would never come to fruition. 

With a shake of his head, Kouga chanced one last look at the waterfall; the transformation before him was a testament to nature's resilience and a beacon of hope, showing that even the most desolate places could bloom anew with care.

He then continued his nightly patrol, roaming the forest, lost in memory and regret. His senses suddenly snapped to attention as a familiar scent wafted through the air—a delicate blend of honeyed sweet cream, sun-warm berries, and the unmistakable essence of Kagome. But mingled with Kagome's fragrance was another, more sinister aroma—the metallic tang of blood, thick and cloying. Instantly alert, Kouga's instincts screamed at him to investigate, his muscles tensing with anticipation as he followed the scent through the dense underbrush.

Without hesitation, Kouga broke into a run, his powerful legs carrying him swiftly through the forest as he followed the scent of blood. Every fiber of his being screamed for him to reach Kagome, to ensure her safety in the face of whatever danger lurked in the shadows.

His mind raced with a thousand possibilities as he tore through the underbrush, each more terrifying than the last. But amidst the fear and uncertainty, one thing remained clear—Kagome needed him.

Panic and fear pounded in his veins, echoing in the booming howl that was torn from his chest. The howl was his way of calling for backup. He could barely hear the answering howl before he felt the winds shift, carrying the scent of his fellow wolf demons, the ones on guard and patrol changing course to join him.

And then, amidst the shadows and moonlight, Kouga stumbled upon a scene that stole the breath from his lungs. There, amidst the tangled underbrush, staggered Kagome, her form battered, bruised, bleeding,  yet still radiating a quiet strength that Kouga found both awe-inspiring and heart-wrenching.

Beside her stood Kiara, the two-tailed fire cat, her fur matted with blood as she limped with obvious injuries. Upon her back were two familiar figures—Miroku, the monk, and Sango, the demon slayer—both bearing wounds that spoke of a fierce battle fought. And floating gracefully above them was the young fox demon, his form transformed into a floating balloon, carrying an equally injured Inuyasha.

Kouga's heart clenched at the sight of Kagome's injuries, his chest tight with worry and concern. But as their eyes met, he saw a flicker of relief in her gaze. "Kouga." His name—a soft, trembling whisper that sent a shiver down his spine. Her eyes fluttered as she staggered, her knees buckling under her.

He was at her side in a burst of speed that had him blinking out of sight until he was at her side, catching her before she could hit the ground and cradling her to his chest. Even while injured, a sense of peace washed over him from holding her, an ache he hadn't noticed finally easing.

His hands shook as he brushed a lock of hair from her forehead. "Kagome," he murmured softly, his voice filled with concern. "I'm here. You're safe now."

wolfYLady: Another new story! I really should be working on "Of Curses And Demons" or "Youkai Academy" (both have chapters I'm struggling with) or some of my original works, but this idea would not leave me alone until I wrote it.

Another A/B/O InuYasha Ficlet

This is a follow up to my previous Inukag a/b/o ficlet. It would happen about a week after Kagome and InuYasha hookup.

And yes, I did write this instead of eating food. How did you know?

Basically, Kagome wants to talk through her feelings. InuYasha is trying to avoid his feelings like the plague. But one small, neglected issue in the whole matter: Koga.

"INUYASHA!!"

The sound shook his table. Kagome had been trying to track him down for several days. But InuYasha was faster than her. He had to be. He wasn't willing to be near her.

Little known side effect to biting your soul mate, desires only get worse. Now all it took was a single faint smell, her gentle touch, her gaze flowing over him, her--

STOP THINKING ABOUT HER! FOCUS JACKASS!

Worse yet, his rut was a few days away.

The moment he had heard her shout his name, InuYasha jumped up on the table and started sprinting full speed.

"GET BACK HERE!!" She screamed, "WE NEED TO TALK!"

"NO WE DON'T!" he shouted back down the hall at her.

He started to slip when he took a corner a little sharp, but recovered his balance well enough. It didn't help his body fought his mind on every step. As rut creapt up on him, the desire to be near Kagome only got worse and worse. His knees failed him every time she so much as looked at him.

He ran down yet another hallway, begging for any place to hide. Just about every occupied classroom had people peering out at the commotion.

"KAGOME!" InuYasha heard a familiar voice call the girl's name, and her foot steps stopped.

InuYasha kept running, until he could duck behind another corner, certain she wasn't chasing him anymore. He leaned against the lockers and heavy breaths racked his body. He needed to recover from the sudden burst of energy.

"WHAT THE HELL!" Koga shouted. His voice was a sudden thunder clap, shaking the building. "YOU AVOID ME ALL WEEK! AND NOW YOU SMELL LIKE HIM?"

"Koga! We're friends! Of course his scent would be on me! I'm around him all the time!" She reasoned.

"NO! Don't try to lie to me! If only you could smell yourself. IT'S DISGUSTING!" Koga's voice only got more outraged with every word.

InuYasha cringed internally, ashamed of his actions. He had thought the scent marking he had left wasn't that strong, but apparently it had lasted for close to five days.

"Koga stop!" She pleaded, "It's not what you think!"

Shit. This can't be good. No this can't be good at all.

"Kagome. I loved you. I trusted you," he spat, "But you go sneaking around behind my back? With InuYasha of all people? Seriously? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!"

Something in InuYasha forced him to his feet. To Kagome's side. Koga sounded pissed, and InuYasha couldn't fight the urge to protect her from him. He knew it was the building hormones of rut wreaking havoc on his brain, but he didn't have the power or desire to fight it.

My stupid mistake got her into this mess. I owe it to her to protec- To face my consequences.

Once InuYasha was on his feet and around the corner, he knew he made the right choice. Koga had Kagome pinned against the wall, fingers dug deep into her shoulders. Even from where he stood, InuYasha could see the tears well in her eyes, and the scent of fear ebbing off her.

The scene sent a shock through his mind, destroying any possibility of restraint. Before InuYasha knew what happened, Koga was on the ground, clutching a crooked and clearly broken nose and Kagome was wrapped firmly in his arms.

He begged to coo and fawn over her. He needed to wipe away her tears, hold her so close. The world would never hurt her again. In the same vein, he fought the urge to pull Koga back to his feet and rip into him. To disfigure the fucker until there was no identifying the body. But at the same time, he could not not bear to remove his hands from Kagome, even if it was to comfort or defend her.

"Don't. Fucking. Touch. Her." He growled, emphasizing every word. There were no other words or thoughts even possible in his mind. It was all instincts and hormones controlling him.

Koga searched the sight in front of him. His eyes were frenzied and panicked, switching between Kagome and InuYasha's faces faster than InuYasha could register. Finally, his eyes settled on InuYasha, and twisted into rage.

"WHAT THE HELL? INUYASHA YOU BITCH! THAT'S MY FUCKING GIRLFRIEND! WHAT SORT OF BALLS DO YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOU THINK YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO EVEN LOOK AT HER!?" Koga slowly got up, shouting every possible insult he could think of. Finally, he started to pull his fist back, readying a punch aimed at InuYasha.

InuYasha took the punch in stride, and regrettably removed his hand from Kagome. He cocked his fist back and buried right in Koga's gut. The jackass landed flat on his ass yet again.

"If you try to get up again. I will personally ensure that you will never have use of your legs. Ever."
