He meets Steve when Steve is sleep deprived and wearing pencil lead like a grey blush.

Arguably he doesn’t really meet Steve because Steve is passed out over his sketchbook, but when he slides open the door to the private study room he ends up waking Steve from a fitful nap. 

“Hey,” he says, giving a nod towards the softly humming computer, “r’you using that?”

Still looking groggy, Steve glances at him and then to the computer before quickly shaking his head and wiping drool off his cheek. “No, it’s all yours,” he says as he quickly shuffles his stuff away from the keyboard, but then he purses his lips and looks up at Bucky again. “Uh- do you mind if I still stay in the room?”

Why brims on his lips, but Bucky’s seen enough all-nighters to know that this is the first empty, quiet place Steve’s found, and so he shrugs instead, plopping his satchel down and logging onto the computer. He only has about an hour before his next lecture, but an hour is still enough time to get some stick figures down for his game design class next week. 

He loses himself quickly, and he probably would’ve worked fine for the full hour if it weren’t for the fact that about forty minutes in the repetitive pencil scritching has been replaced by curious humming, and from the corner of his eye he watches as he’s stared at. 

It’s not like this hasn’t happened before, though, no matter how much Bucky hates it. People see his arm and think it’s good practice for drawing prosthetics, or that he’d make a cool side character in a comic or a game, and they never bother asking him before they sketch out his arm. One of his teachers had even complimented him on being a model for so many people earlier this year, and it had made a hot flush of embarrassment run through him, that his prosthetic was both so recognisable and that people thought they could use it for their assignments. 

It’s for that reason alone that his voice comes out a bit more snappy than he means it too when he says, “I know you’re drawing me.”

Steve jumps, and Bucky pushes away from his computer to fasten him with a flat glare. “Seriously, did you think I wouldn’t notice?”

“I was hoping I was kind of subtle?” Steve offers, giving Bucky a sheepish grin, but his grip on his pencil is tight and Bucky takes a deep breath and counts down to stop himself from sounding so snappish. 

“Don’t draw my arm,” he finally says, because that’s as clear as he could ever make it, and Steve jumps again. This time, however, he squints at Bucky and his grip on his pencil loosens. He flips it around his fingers, adds another line, and then slides his sketchbook across to Bucky. 

“I wasn’t,” he says as Bucky hesitantly picks it up, confused at the sight of detailed sketches of his face and his flesh-and-blood hand, awkwardly gripping his tablet pen. “Though it is pretty cool.”

Bucky fumbles for his words, still staring at his own face and the tiny frown of concentration his mom used to push at to try and make him stop. Trying to find a reason to stall, he goes to flip the page and Steve gives an awkward yelp and stands up so fast he bangs his knees on the table and makes the desk jump. He grabs his sketchbook out of Bucky’s hands with red cheeks and a sheepish laugh and says, 

“Sorry, sorry, those are from my life drawing class. They’re not really-,” he laughs again, still awkward, and Bucky flexes his shoulder, trying to shrug even though he still feels off-balance.

“S’fine. Sorry for- snapping at you.”

He gets a relieved smile, and then, his sketchbook held loosely against his side, Steve extends his hand. “Nice to meet you.”

“Something like that,” he says, and when he grabs Steve’s hand with cold metal, Steve just grins even wider and doesn’t flinch.
