I finally got the first chart repeat done on the Guernsey shawl I'm making for @kalgalen! Now that I can see how it'll all look I'm incredibly happy with it. My measurements are a bit wonky to be perfectly honest - The width is slightly short and the length is longer than it should be - but my tension is always weird no matter what I knit or how. A good blocking will at least fix the width issue and a good long wrap is always nice.
I do think that if I make this again I'd choose a different yarn. The one I got to fit my budget is very loosely spun and it makes some of the finer details (like the honeycomb at the top) a bit indistinct. The acrylic/wool blend is also a bit rough. Not overly so but definitely enough to warrant a good vinegar wash and steam block to soften the acrylic dominance and give it a better drape.

ideas for casual low-stress art projects if you want to work on something creative during the new year
dream journal: you can either write down every single dream you have so you can look back on everything, or just write down the best ones and add little drawings or collages to embellish them
weather blanket/scarf: create a legend for which colour matches each temperature/weather and then knit one row every day so by the end of the year you have a little reminder of what the weather looked like this year
junk journal/scrapbook: collect misc things like labels/ads/stickers/receipts and make little collages with them in a book
everyone add on ideas

im making a whole entire scarf using the basketweave stitch by studioknit and even though i already wrote down the pattern in a way that makes it a lot easier for me to read it i still can only knit if im watching something that keeps my thoughts from wandering .
the lace eyelet heart pattern was a lot easier cause i could see what i was doing a lot better and i also changed and adapted it over the course of a few previous attempts at knitting it and by the time i got to the second set of five hearts i had it almost memorized
the basketweave is really really pretty though im already finished with a significant part of it (i'd say it may be almost half) and im really determined to finish the entire scarf even though i get lost and spend most of my time fixing my mistakes

hey. psst. do you knit? crochet? yeah, you, come closer.
that voice you're hearing in your head telling you to make a temperature blanket for next year?
bonk it with a cardboard tube and tell it to shut up

Finished my husband's sweater! ...in the middle of August.
Pattern is Honeycomb Aran by Gayle Bunn. Really fun knit, but I did substitute the 8 strand center braid for a honeycomb pattern, which is much simpler to memorize. (yes the Honeycomb Aran does not... have... any honeycomb cables??). This was a great project to practice knitting cables without a cable needle, pretty easy with wool.
next project- knitting a baptism gown for my baby due at the end of September. Smaller gauge and lace, should be a good change after the chunky cables!

"There's an Irish belief that you have to put mistakes in your knitting to keep your soul from being trapped in it," I say through gritted teeth as I fight to keep from frogging half my project.

You knitted your wedding dress?? That is so cool!
Thank you! I had two main objectives - keeping the cost of our wedding down (so we DIYed a lot), and also simply not wanting to hunt forever for something that fit my tastes. (I'd had enough of the "hunting" experience when I went shopping for a prom dress haha!)
I started in January and finished the whole thing in August, just a few short weeks before the wedding, which was on Labor Day weekend that year. Had a lot of fun with it - learned some new techniques, did lots of little fancy details (like knitting tiny beads into the fabric!), and ended up with something completely unique. :) I'd never want to do it again; there were easily millions of stitches involved. But as a one-time experience, it was pretty cool! :D

I would like to thank Mr. Bomberguy for dropping this video essay at the perfect time aka when knitters are rapidly trying to finish our projects in time for the holidays.

You'd be surprised by how many mad scientists get into fabric arts. It starts with stitching up corpses and patching torn lab coats, and then you're learning to knit to pass the time while waiting for an experiment and all the sudden you're genetically engineering sheep to have naturally blue wool to make your own yarn because you're sick of the cheap synthetic stuff at craft stores
