I got to know the carnival in Klisoura after having some small talk with the hotel owner in Kastoria. I was staying in Kastoria because I had some time after the New Year's festivities in Argos Orestikon and the Bell bearers' customs in Drama. Kastoria is a beautiful city in northern Greece, situated around a big lake.
The carnival continues in Kastoria and during the first day of the Year Argkoutsaria (Carnivals in the Vlach language) are celebrated in the historic Klisoura.
During the first day of the Year Argkoutsaria (Carnivals in the Vlach language) are celebrated in the historic Klisoura. Kleisoura is a traditionally Aromanian (Vlach) settlement and a former municipality in Kastoria regional unit, West Macedonia, Greece. On 5 April 1944, the German occupation forces executed 280 inhabitants as retaliation for the killing of three Nazi soldiers by ELAS guerrilla forces operating under Alexis Rosios just outside the village at the location Ntaouli
The clothing since 1904, the beginning of the Macedonian revolution, has changed to the Macedonian warrior’s one, which includes the cloak, fustanella, a stiff white kilt, worn by men in Greece, and tsarouchia, a type of shoe, which is typically known nowadays as part of the traditional uniform. Tsarouchia are typically made of a number of pieces of stiff leather hand-sewn together, in the moccasin fashion. They have a characteristic pointy nose, usually covered by a large woolen pompom.

Steni Evia
New Post has been published on https://www.eviafoxhouse.com/attraction/steni-evia/
Steni Evia

The mountain “diamond” of Central Evia Built on the outskirts of Dirfyos, the highest mountain of Evia, Steni is one of the most beautiful villages on the island and the starting point of many mountain excursions. The picturesque village of Kefalochori stretches at an altitude of 450 meters and consists of three settlements: Ano and Kato Steni and the now abandoned settlement of Pyrgos, also known as Skounderi. The area is verdant, with a clean atmosphere and springs with gurgling water coming down from the mountain running literally everywhere, creating a refreshing sense of well-being that only mountain villages can offer.
The water wealth of the Strait has inspired many legends about fairies and elves, and, if you are lucky, you will hear the elders of the village telling them in the cafes. The locals have other stories to tell you from the legendary mountain of Dirfyos, while they boast about the fact that their village, which during the Ottoman period was called Kleisoura, was never trampled by the Turks and was a stronghold of boatmen and thieves.
The proximity to the mountain range of Dirfyos has made the village a pole of attraction for nature lovers from all over the world, every season, while the short distance from Chalkida has turned it into a popular destination even for one-day getaways. In the village there are rooms for rent and some elegant guesthouses, as well as cafes and bars in the central paved square with plane trees and mulberries. In terms of food, note that the area is famous for its excellent locally produced meats and mushrooms – so vegetarians will not complain either.
In the kingdom of water and green
The villages around Steni are beautiful, with lush vegetation and lots of water, so it is worth visiting. The Kambia , with its cavernous chapel of Agia Kyriaki, built on the side of Mega Longos and near the canyon Chavou. Although small, the village is tidy. Do not forget to buy local fava beans and visit the abandoned settlement of Kato Kambia with houses dating back up to 300 years ago. Crossing the forest of Steni to Chiliadou you will reach Stropones . The traditional village is amphitheatrically built, while the terraces with the crops make an impression. Continuing on the same road you meet Metochi, which stretches between the mountains Mesovouni and Skotini, and facing the mountain range of Dirfyos. Its inhabitants are mainly cattle breeders, so get excellent cheese products but also the famous cherries in Evia, if it is their season.
Sights not to be missed
Steni Aesthetic Forest: The Steni Aesthetic Forest stretches on the southern slope of Mount Dirfis near Steni. It is one of the 19 aesthetic forests of Greece and is included in the European ecological network Natura. The forest has an area of 500 hectares and is one of the most enchanting areas of the country and a pole of attraction for nature lovers from all over the world every season. The natural environment will take your breath away: streams, gorges, different species of trees and plants, small wild animals and rare birds compose a paradise landscape.
Dirfyos Mountain Refuge: Dirfyos Mountain Refuge (or “Michalis Nikolaou” Refuge) is located in Leiri, at an altitude of 1,120 meters. The shelter has unrestricted views from the Evian Gulf to the Aegean Sea, while on days when the atmosphere is clear you can even see the Sporades. It has relatively modern equipment, 50 beds and can accommodate 45 people. The shelter belongs to the Hellenic Mountaineering Association of Chalkida (EOS), which manages it. Church of Agia Kyriaki: Built in the village of Kampia, in a beautiful location full of running water and plane trees, the small church will impress you with its unpretentious beauty. The temple rests on a rock located above the cave, in which, according to legend, the locals found the icon of Holy Sunday. Its interior is more reminiscent of a cave than a classic church, creating an all-encompassing and at the same time evocative atmosphere. Suggestions for activities The area is a “paradise” for mountain sports enthusiasts, giving opportunities for activities of varying difficulty, ranging from amateurs and beginners to experienced climbers and climbers aiming for 1,743 meters and the top of Dirfyos. So, get ready for mountain excursions, as the Aesthetic Forest of Steni and Mount Dirfis are suitable for walking, hiking, mountaineering and climbing, as there are climbing fields at Karaouli (Dirfis), in Xerovouni and in Karovia. The area is also a favorite of mountain bikers, with the Big Bear route being extremely popular, while trail running enthusiasts can try their hand at the Dirfys Marathon mountain road race.

Hey. I was wondering about the Byzantine military. Could you outline the changes it saw during the roughly two-and-half century period between Charlemagne's ascension around 800 and that of Alexios Komnenos?
Well, at the time of Charlemagne’s ascension, the one on the Throne was the Empress Eirene, and depending on who you ask, her in the purple was one of the reasons why Charlemagne was crowned “Emperor of the Romans.” That is a very sketchy idea, of course, and depends largely on which sources you believe (Charlemagne stated he was surprised by being coronated, other analysts differ; he did not claim the Eastern Roman Empire but that could easily be because had no ability to take and/or rule it). Interestingly enough, though we have only one source for it, Eirene apparently endeavored to marry Charlemagne and unite the Byzantine and Carolignian Empires.
Anyway, at the time, there were three essential components: the themata, the tagmata, and the hetaireia. The tagmata was the core Byzantine professional troops. These were heavy cavalry and highly-skilled, similar to a lordly retinue in formed a core, later regional counts would control their own tagmata. The themata were the Byzantine organizational system for the other provinces as I’ve mentioned before, was the organizational element for levies and a payment system of state-owned landholdings used for military service, an organizational method that was cheaper and more efficient than feudal lords amassing levies. The hetaireia was a retinue of foreign, paid mercenaries charged with similar duties to the tagmata.
Early on the Byzantine empire, facing wars from three directions, lost key territories, notably most of Sicily, Sardinia, and Crete, a decline that would go until around 867 (though Syracuse fell a few years later). In the mid-eighth century, with the heartland of Byzantium threatened, the Emperors established the kleisoura, fortified mountain districts around the Taurus and Anti-Taurus mountains, as special frontier regions, similar to marches of Europe or the al-thughur of the Abbasid and Umayyad caliphates (the later of these literally included the other side of the Byzantine ones), whose chief concern was protection and thus were afforded more autonomy. The Byzantines expanded their naval capabilities as is documented multiple times in their military manuals. Following the stabilization of 867 and the ascension of Basil I the Macedonian, the Empire began a reversal of its fortunes, securing Taranto and the Italian peninsula as well as eastern conquests into territory lost to the Arab and Bulgar conquests.
In the tenth century, we see a shift in several things. First off, the Armenian themes, smaller 1,000-man divisions, were established during the consolidation of eastern conquests. We also see a push more toward reconnaissance and light infantry and raiding as the Arabs and Byzantines would regularly raid each other. More foreigners would come to court and this included foreign mercenaries, the most famous being the Varangian Guard, established after the Christianization of the Kievan Rus. The warrior-emperors, Nikepheros II Phokas, John I Tzimiskies, and Basil the Bulgar-Slayer would each put their stamp on the Byzantine army. Nikepheros introduced a new type of short pike for ultraheavy cavalry meant to shatter formations, as well as a pike and bow formation for infantry that was one of the first of its kind. John I emphasized unit initiative and officer judgment that had made him so successful, and Basil was notable for his generalship, but he also made an effective and fair arrangement with poor farmers and increased their power by taxing the nobility and Church in order to seize funding for his campaigns. This made supply problems much easier in Byzantine territory, as farmers often gladly sold or donated supplies to his army on campaign. Basil II also invested heavily in artillery, headed by his talented general Nikepheros Ouranos
Unfortunately, the successes of these three generals caused a lack of investment in the themata, who increasingly paid a scutage tax rather than train their soldiers (or just avoided training as often as they should). As a result, when the new Turkish conquests came, only the tagmata and the foreign mercenaries were effective, the themata were corrupt and thus the Empire had no strategic depth, a bad loss by the tagmata imperiled the whole of the Empire. At Manizkert in 1071, this decline was on full display, and this lasted until Alexios established his own Komnennian army (though this process was begun by the eunuch Nikephoritzes), which was later perfected by John II and Manuel I.
Thanks for the question, Calagon.
