I'm making a Sebastian Debeste playlist and I ended up putting Sweetheart's theme from Omori on there. Not sure why but it cracks me up. It fits him. Like, really well. It's hilarious.

Wandering Rose also fits him when he's being like... dramatic. It's more like his comeback theme.

honestly what I do when writing an emotionally critical scene is: I write out everything they truly feel, think, all the things leading up to those feelings and responses. Then I write out exactly what I WISH the other person would say, in this perfect way, to get to where I need them to be.

then. I stop. Go back. And change it. I take out buts that they wouldn't/couldn't say. I make their language feel like it's in character. I imagine their facial expressions, their vocal ticks. More than half of what I've written is gone by the end. But I manage to get them to that end destination I wanted, maybe slightly bent, or maybe only ALMOST there. But I know what exactly the characters are trying to convey. It's still there. Perhaps unsaid. or said a less than perfectly intelligent and emotionally mature way.

That post that's like "stop writing characters who talk like they're trying to get a good grade in therapy" really blew the door wide open for me about how common it's become for a character's emotional intelligence to not be taken into consideration when writing conflict. I remember the first time I went to therapy I had such a hard time even identifying what I was feeling, let alone had the language to explain it to someone else. Of course there are plenty of people who've never been to therapy a day in their life who are in tune to their emotions. But even they would have some trouble expressing themselves sometimes. You have to take into account there are plenty of people who are uncomfortable expressing themselves and people who think they're not allowed to feel certain ways. It also makes for more interesting conflict to have characters with different levels of understanding.

There is something about being a fanfic writer whose major project is a direct response to nationalistic and authoritarian themes in the canon text, who also happens to be witnessing their country rapidly descend into fascism.

Like. I am writing about fake cats fighting in the woods. Through this, I give a couple hundred people an insight to some basic antifascist theory. Point out how xenophobia and theocracy are praised by the narrative, detail how I'd restructure it. I talk about how capitulation and endless "compromise" in the name of bipartisanship from liberal leaders causes them to frustrate their base and slide the country towards conservatism. Casual joke about Nightstar being Joe Biden.

This is both too silly to take seriously, and too serious to dismiss as silly.

I ask myself if I'm taking things too seriously and unplug for a bit to be part of the offline world. A fourth plane crashes and the leader of the most powerful military in the world blames minorities. A man with a brain worm suggests labor camps for the mentally ill. A billionare Nazi gains access to social security.

The 80-year-old leader of the opposition bravely announces his plan to Introduce A Bill About It. It's called the "omggg stop like for real STOPP!" act. It's bipartisan :)

I teach middle school students in China and sometimes I'll be typing at my desk while they're doing quiet (or group) workbook activities. They'll come up to ask me a question, and I take great pleasure in looking them dead in the eye and continuing to type while they ask their question.

Never fails to scare them or fill them with silent awe.

Iron Bull's lie literally gave me trust issues and triggers an anxiety attack every time I play Demands of the Qun and Trespasser. Sorry, Egg, you ain't got nothing on Hissrad...

He's such a good liar that I don't know much much was a lie, either!!

Spoilers below

I will never get over in Trespasser when the Iron Bull begged to go with me while tracking down the Viddasala. Begging to join me so he can find out what's going on, how worried and even offended he is to be kept in the dark from his own people. And me blithely agreeing because I loved the crap outta my big silly friend and thought he deserved to be there.

And then the Darvashaad.

You can argue that he genuinely had no idea and, in the moment, did what he did. OR that he knew the whole time and convinced you to take him with you ON PURPOSE. There's no way to really know. And I had NO IDEA what was coming. I haven't been able to really enjoy Iron Bull since, even though he was my favorite companion (tied with Dorian) the first time I played. It's legit painful. I'm not even lying, I had an anxiety attack when I tried to play a second time even though I'd saved the Chargers that time, so it wouldn't be the same. I had to text my friend, while crying, so he could pep talk me into unpausing and finishing the game.
