OVERVIEW: 

Originating from Japan, China, and Korea, kitsune (also called kumiho and huxian) are an extremely long-lived species that can shift seamlessly between fox and human form. Their true form is that of a fox starting with a single tail, and through their actions and choices, kitsune may gain additional tails (up to 9). They become more powerful with each tail acquired. Unsurprisingly given the emphasis on tails within the species, kitsune cherish them more than almost anything else, with those having more tails being highly respected. Kitsune may lose tails under certain circumstances.

While tails don’t always correspond to age, older kitsune tend to have accumulated more tails than younger ones. The long-lived and growing power of kitsune means that they often come to value human lives very little; it’s common for them to only care about other supernaturals, particularly those who live a long time. They are known for holding grudges that last centuries, so it is unwise to cross them.

APPEARANCE: 

Kitsune look like mostly ordinary foxes while in their fox form, the big difference being that kitsune can have multiple tails – anywhere from 1 to 9. While most people might assume this is some kind of mutated wild fox, multiple tails are a tell to the more supernaturally-inclined that it isn’t a typical animal. Though kitsune resemble the species called the “red fox”, both the fox species and kitsune actually come in a variety of color morphs and coat patterns. Kitsune can be identified by the fox-shaped shadow that they cast, as well as the occasional imperfection in their shapeshifting.

TAILS: 

Kitsune have two types of tails, which correspond to different abilities and morality. These tail types are “zenko” (benevolent) and “nogitsune” (malevolent). Tails are always earned through a kitsune’s actions combined with heartfelt intent. 

Kitsune are born with a single, neutral tail. From there, they can either earn a zenko tail, or a nogitsune tail. After that first earned tail, a kitsune must alternate which type of tail they get next. When a kitsune has earned all 9 tails, they have a one-time opportunity to “convert” their tails one way or the other to grow more powerful in the way they desire. They can also lose their tails in any order, leaving a kitsune with one kind or the other.

To earn zenko tails, a kitsune must do something selfless, be it sacrifice themselves for someone else, prevent a disaster, or other actions that often save lives. Conversely, nogitsune tails require that the kitsune cause suffering and death – burning people alive in foxfire, destroying a community’s livelihood, and so on. If any action – good or bad – is taken with the intention of earning a tail, the kitsune won’t earn a tail. Both the selflessness and malice must be genuine. Additionally, the scale of these actions must grow along with a kitsune’s tail number. For example, a kitsune saving a life at their own peril might be enough for that first zenko tail, but the next one would have to be earned in an even grander way. 

If a kitsune actively attempts to avoid earning more tails, they suffer restlessness proportionate to their avoidance, which can impact both forms and their abilities; this must be an intentional avoidance and not merely the absence of earning tails. 

GENERAL ABILITIES: 

Kitsune can transform between fox and human forms quickly and painlessly within a thick, cloudy puff of air, though they famously don’t always get things completely right. The transformation is magical in nature so they keep their clothes when they change back.

Kitsune can shift whenever they want, and are never forced.

All kitsune have “foxfire,” which refers to creating orbs and small (at baseline) flames of blue fire. They’re able to generate this foxfire from their hands or tails, and can use it as projectiles when threatened. Those who make physical contact with foxfire can be burned. 

Kitsune with a single tail have enhanced smelling, hearing, and vision in fox form. Those with 3 or more tails have their enhanced senses in human form as well.

Kitsune with at least 7 tails can speak in fox form. 

Kitsune are immune to their own foxfire as well as the foxfire of other kitsune, but are not usually immune to other forms of fire.

Tails can be sacrificed. A kitsune may use one of their tails to significantly heal someone injured/dying, or for a truly massive power boost. After that, the tail is gone. 

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Kitsune also have abilities that are tied to the number and type of tails they have.

ZENKO ABILITIES:

Specific to the number of zenko tails.

Zenko abilities typically have to do with foxfire. 

1 zenko tail: Better control over direction and duration of foxfire; can blind people with a flash of foxfire for a few seconds

2 zenko tails: Can breathe foxfire; can have their foxfire act autonomously

3 zenko tails: Foxfire can take on a hypnotic quality and lure people to certain locations; can create and control will-‘o-the-wisps

4 zenko tails: Can create a large ‘fox’ out of foxfire which can be controlled or be autonomous, and can be used for any purpose; immune to all fire

NOGITSUNE ABILITIES:

Specific to the number of nogitsune tails.

Nogitsune abilities typically have to do with trickery and manipulation. 

1 nogitsune tail: Can imitate human laughter and crying in fox form; becomes sneakier in fox form and is able to blend into the shadows (not undetectable)

2 nogitsune tails: Can briefly possess a person, especially if they’re in an altered state of mind (inebriated, very emotional); after possession ends, victims may become sick

3 nogitsune tails: Longer possession; can mess with someone’s abilities to perceive their surroundings

4 nogitsune tails: Can create a perfect illusionary double of themselves in either form, which can be controlled or autonomous, and can be used for any purpose (including causing physical harm)

WEAKNESSES: 

Kitsunes can lose tails by having them cut off, or by using them in specific ways.

The more tails a kitsune has, the more strongly they are detected by rangers, and from a greater distance.

Intense claustrophobia and fear of being trapped and locked up, which is difficult to overcome. When exposed to this fear, kitsune essentially become feral foxes, ready to snap at and scratch anyone nearby, until they’ve had time to collect themselves. This can take days, weeks, or even months depending on how long the kitsune was trapped and how their fear was experienced.

If a kitsune has spent a long time in human form, they may begin feeling claustrophobic and anxious about being in their own skin, leading to varying levels of discomfort.

If a kitsune begins actively avoiding earning tails, restlessness can take over, leading to more frantic behavior. The more avoidant a kitsune is, the worse this gets.

Kitsune may have a difficult time holding onto their shapeshifting magic when inebriated, leading to tails showing, whiskers, etc. 

Water can put out foxfire, like any other fire.

If a 9-tailed kitsune chooses to convert most of their tails to nogitsune tails, their possession abilities can be powerful enough that they may need to be exorcised to free the victim.

Hunted by rangers, who can sense their presence.

And the first Kitsundae Boost of the year! I actually ended up doing about four initial sketches, all with the idea of a dragon protecting it's hoard. I'm happy with the final one that the commissioner chose though!

So here’s some surgeries/body and other modifications I’ve thought of to make myself more kitsune/wolf like.

I’ve actually thought about nose surgery to make my nose look more animal like, kind of like how the Na’vi in avatar have their noses, not the flatness/width, but with the like cat nose type crease and shape. I’m kind of wondering if anyone would actually be willing to do that for me… would be hard to find I’m sure, so I may just resort to makeup for now at least.

Also surgical fangs. You know how people get permanent fangs with their actual teeth through modification.

Growing out my nails to make them sharp and pointy as well. Kind of like this (images found on Pinterest)

And this one is sort of optional/not that much of importance, but pointed ears surgery as well. This one is kind of optional for me though since it doesn’t really make any change which is the most animal like. Least to me

Also, piercings, snakebites and/or angel fangs. I’ve also thought about a forehead/vertical bridge piercing for the kitsune aspect. I’ve also thought about regular bridge piercings and collarbone piercings since I like how those look. I might get all of those in the future even if I don’t get the other modifications. I’ve found jewelry for snakebites at least that have white fangs on them, and if I were to get angel fangs I would use clear or red balls on the top part and white or silver spikes on the lower part. For a vertical bridge piercing I would want to find a piercing which has large gems on it which are sparkly.

I’ve also thought about custom face piercings to look like whiskers, like how from what I know two people have done. But the issue with this is I would want them to be thin and semi transparent like actual whiskers. Not to mention I’d need enough room on my eyebrows, triple eyebrow piercings on both sides. or, I was thinking if I did get any on my lower face they would be cheek piercings. Might get both. And said cheek piercings would have three or more strands sticking out in different directions to look like whiskers. A custom jewelry like this though might be expensive. But I would love for them to be sparkly as well.

I may have to make them myself which might be difficult but not impossible. Just would need the right supplies. Probably would have to use fishing wire or jewelry skin safe wire and skin safe nontoxic permanent glue or however you join together jewelry metal. Since the whiskers would just be on the flat surface relatively larger of the piercing I don’t think it would be harmful especially if I used surgical or some other type of glue safe for human skin and such.

Next is face paint/makeup. Which I would like to wear every day and in public if possible. But this also means I would hopefully find a way to coordinate my outfits with it as well to make it look good. As well as some cat eye yellow contacts or just regular golden/yellow contacts, this or white ones. If I can’t wear face paint I would likely still do makeup to look like a wolf or kitsune, obviously by face paint I don’t mean to paint my entire face black or anything. I would only paint it white if I were to do a kitsune look with red markings, and for a wolf I would just make the nose/whiskers etc.

And ofc I need ears, as well as a tail or multiple tails if I want to look like a kitsune. I want to get ethically sourced real white fox tails, as well as an ethically sourced black wolf tail. Both of which I can easily find online. And ears I am hoping to find the style I want on Etsy. I’m looking for these ones, but if I can’t find these then I plan to get other ones that are hopefully still cute and fox like. Also I found these off Pinterest. Or I may get them custom made. I might have to order a custom 9 tails too.

And yes this is what I will be working on slowly throughout the next few years aside from college. Mainly the piercings and finding or having custom made the ears/tails. I will try to set money aside once I get a new job for a couple of months

Duke watched Phantom pace around the rooftop in growing bemusement. The kid was going over the notes he'd taken in his little pocket notebook over the course of his and Dick's Q&As with a rather deep furrow between his brows, muttering under his breath all the while. Duke chanced a glance at his oldest brother from where he sat as straight-backed as possible on his stool of shadows. Though Dick was fully masked and in character, Duke could read the older man like a book. His casual perch on top of the roof access shed held a shade of wariness and the set of his shoulders belayed his concern.

He fully understood, from what Steph and Jason had said, Phantom knew pretty much instantly exactly what both of them were as soon as he'd finished questioning them. He hadn't had to ask them more than ten questions total before he just knew. With Dick, however, he'd asked almost twenty five questions, and Duke was asked almost forty before Phantom had started up his pacing and muttering.

Right as Duke's anxiety started acting up, started whispering poisonous words about how he was a fake and a failure, that Phantom was going to declare him nothing more than a freakishly over powered meta and his family would turn him out on the streets over it, the kid abruptly stopped pacing and, without even looking up from his little notebook, asked the two of them, "So did you guys know you were both light deities before you came up here, or is that just a huge freaking coincidence? Because I've cross-checked the facts and crunched all the numbers, and you two are both minor deities of light, among other things."

Dick rolled his head dramatically to the side door a moment before asking in his raspy Raven voice, "Among other thingsssss?"

Phantom looked up from his notes with a blank startled look before understanding flashed across his expression. "Ahh, yes. Raven, you're a minor guardian trickster deity of light, your domains are pranks and tomfoolery, light, and protection. Signal, you're a minor guardian deity of light and shadows, your domains are both light and shadows, as well as protection. Basically, your domains are things that empower you and that you can manipulate and control with training. Eventually, you'll even be able to bless people within your clan's territory with any of your domains, such as blessing someone to find safety within the light of street lamps. Raven, as a trickster, you'll be drawn to areas and people full of mischief, and even feel the urge to start mischief, yourself," he explained. "As both of you are also guardians, you're inherently connected to the general wellbeing of the inhabitants of your territory. When someone is in danger within the city limits, you'll be able to tell. With practice, you'll even be able to hone in on the location."

Cass watched from her spot draped across a crouching Tim's shoulders as Phantom gently smacked his forehead with his little notebook. He'd just finished questioning her and seemed to be having a small mental breakdown. She watched him for a little longer before softly whistling a question to her little brother in the family's secret conlang, Is he okay? Tim's chirped answer, I'm not sure, was followed by Phantom taking a deep breath and looking back up at them.

"Sorry about that, I wasn't expecting your clan to have so many minor deities in it. Ibis, you're definitely a kitsune, though I have no idea how many tails you have yet or what they can do, so we'll have to figure that out next time. BlackBat, you're a minor guardian deity of darkness and shadows, your domains are darkness, shadows, and protection. Like I told Raven and Signal, your domains are things that empower you. You and Signal share the domain of shadows, but as you also possess the domain of darkness itself, you'll be able to do things with shadows that he likely never will, no matter how much he trains his shadow domain," Phantom said before letting out a gust of breath and drawing his feet up to sit in midair. He ran a hand through his bright white hair, his entire frame screaming to her his astonishment and wariness. "Ancients, your clan is seriously OP. Batman is most likely a major deity since he has three minor deities under him, then there's the three of you minor deities. Condor's a Phoenix, Starling is a banshee, you're a kitsune with who knows how many tails, Ibis—" he pulled his hand from his hair and ran it down his face instead.

Tim and Cass glanced at each other at his words. Were clans... Not supposed to be like theirs? It felt entirely natural to her, especially since her family had started taking lessons from Phantom. She couldn't imagine her clan being anything other than exactly as it was.

Phantom must have caught the motion of their heads as he hurried to explain. "Most clans are made up of similar, if not the same, species. Your clan not only has a wider variety of species than normal, a lot of you are rare species that either have difficulties getting along with certain species also counted among your number, or aren't usually found in clans at all. Deities, major and minor, either form pantheons, which are different from clans, with other deities local to their territory or fiercely guard their territory from other deities and remain solo their entire existence. The fact that you have a deity in your clan, let alone three or more, is—is unheard of."

Tim froze in her grasp as he immediately began absorbing, analyzing, and extrapolating the new information they'd been given, but Cass barely noticed. No, what drew her attention more than the truly ground shaking information, was the beginnings of real, fragile hope began to show themselves in Phantom's body language. Where before, both the first time she met Phantom and just earlier that very night, he'd exhibited signs of relief and safety, this was perhaps the first time she'd seen him express hope. Cass wondered what he'd seen, what he'd experienced, that had led to him losing his hope in the first place, then she decided that, whatever it was, she wanted to punish the ones behind all of it for taking that hope away.

AHHH I DID IT. I FINALLY FINISHED WRITING CHAPTER THREE. ಥ⁠‿⁠ಥ This took forever, and I apologize for that. I had to start writing this chapter five different times before I finally figured out how the heck I even wanted to begin. Anyway, I had a lot of fun writing this chapter and all the lore drops. Cass's POV kinda got away from me and I'm not entirely sure where half the stuff I put in there came from, but it works! I hope y'all enjoyed it! I'm hoping to get back into the swing of writing and posting nearly every day for the rest of the month, but we'll just have to see, won't we (⁠^⁠～⁠^⁠;⁠)⁠ゞ

I just had a random concept of a Soaring creature based off a Kitsune and modeled to look like Kurama the Nine tailed Fox from Naruto. The hindmost legs of this creature have a dark webbing which stretches between their digits and tails making a large Fan-like display which they might use to attract a mate or intimidate larger animals! Perhaps they may even have the ability to project illusions from the spots on their tails in order to stun and confuse Predators or prey.

These creatures are not native to Laramidia but may have been brought over with the Valkirtani.
