I read the Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang and loved it, it was the perfect story that touched every piece of my soul, light and fluffy and cute with an Own Voices story from an autistic Asian author, and loveable characters and wonderfully done sex scenes.
I immedietly picked up the second hook, The Bride Test, even though I had reservations because it was different characters within the same world, but I worried it wouldn't be as good without that "girl hires a male prostitute and they fall in love" trope that was so good in book one. But surprise!! Book two was even better, focusing on the young family member who was autistic and a woman who was brought in by a meddlesome mom who she though would make a good match for him and now we have forced proximity and eventually bed sharing and awkward sexual tension and it was amazing.
And then moved to book three The Heart Principal which started off strong but after the first quarter of the book, the characters were p much like "officially dating" with just some baggage to work through. The climax, rather than being the characters "getting together" like the first two books, it was the fmc dealing with family medical emergencies, emotional abuse by family, and autistic burnout as she is now having to stay at home and constantly masking 24/7. It wasn't a bad book but it was honestly exhausting on my emotions and mental energy. It didn't help that sick relative was so reminiscent of having to care for my own mother on hospice and the whole last half of the book put me in a funk. It feltt bleak and depressing and I was just so sad for the character, and there was hardly any more romance left. They hit their climax, she had a breakdown, and eventually managed to apologize and they were back together. It just was no longer a light and fluffy cute romance, it felt heavy and left me feeling drained.
It felt like the story was more about the autistic character dealing with their new diagnosis and the trials and tribulations of that, a family that maybe wouldn't accept it, and having to handle the masking and the burnout. And it probably was an amazing story to get to tell, and an amazing story to get to read as someone who went through similar. But it was so far from what I went into it with that I wasn't prepard for that tone shift.
Anyway now I'm On a totay different book but I just feel like I'm in a funk and miss the Kiss Quotient

so i decided to download the kiss quotient and this book is just full of gross ass stereotypes about autistic women, it makes me so fucking uncomfortable. apparently the author is autistic herself but bro, good lord, the use of "asperger's disorder," painting the main character as some moron who doesn't even know if she likes sex????? it just feels like an allistic's version of what autism looks like.

Michael was mint chocolate chip for her. She could try other flavors, but he'd always be her favorite.

My dumb fucking ass, 80K into a romcom telenovela: Okay, but have you considered what if he was a fucking gremlin dipshit in love with an even bigger gremlin dipshit and they outstupided each other in a protracted mating dance? What if?

... I don't understand how she expected anything different? A woman hires an escort to teach her about sex - that's the literal synopsis of the book!

Yes, she was lonely. Yes, she had a broken heart. But at least she had herself.
