This is something that has always annoyed me when people use the argument about burger flippers when discussing minimum/livable wages.

Even if you disregard the fact that a minimum wage is supposed to be the minimum wage one can have to be able to live (I.e. a livable wage). Even if you ignore the fact that someone working at Mc Donald’s flipping burgers deserves to be able to make enough money to afford rent. Even if you ignore all the burger flipper arguments. Minimum wage is not exclusively used for “teenage” jobs.

Wether you are working food service, retail, or an office, there is someone in your company that is making minimum wage. In every job. And most of the time those people are also the very backbone of said company. If there is no one flipping burgers, you cannot buy said burger. If there is no one acting as cashier, you cannot purchase the products you want to purchase. If there isn’t a sanitation worker cleaning your hospital, people will die of infections due to lack of hygiene. If housekeepers do not clean a hotel room, a new guest cannot check into it.

Those are all people who make a minimum wage. They are all people who’s jobs are mandatory.

The shelter worker who wants to keep animals safe deserves a livable wage. The “burger flipper” who works at Mc Donald’s deserves a livable wage. The server at your favorite restaurant deserves a livable wage.there is not a single person in the world who spends 40+ hours a week working a job, soul crushing or not, that does not deserve to make enough money to live comfortably, and I cannot fathom how or why there are people who do not agree with this statement.

What makes a man who works at Walmart overnight and Burger King during the day and only spends 5 hours a night on sleep and can’t even afford basic health care, less deserving of enough money to make ends meet than a woman working in a law firm making enough money to own 2 houses? Why does one evoke the feeling of “they earned the right to make a lot of money” more than the other? Why can’t they BOTH be able to afford rent and food and basic necessities while still having a little extra cash left over for fun??

I went off on a bit of a tangent there but god people who say minimum wage doesn’t need to be $15 make me so angry. $15 isn’t even a livable wage now! It’s more like $20! But we aren’t allowed to even ask for less than a livable wage without being told we are greedy and lazy. I don’t know about you, but I have never met a person who makes minimum wage that was lazy enough to not deserve to live. We all deserve to be able to afford to live! Why is that such a difficult concept?

GOD I wish the minimum wage was a living wage.

I'm not flipping burgers, I'm cleaning litterboxes and doing basic vet care like checking weights, administering medicine, bathing, using IVs, keeping records, making lists, doing photography, and way way more. But the point is even if I was just cleaning litterboxes... I love the work. I wish I could pay rent. Shouldn't I be able to clean litterboxes and feed cats who were rescued from the streets and do that fulfilling wonderful work without wondering where I'm going to live?

Shouldn't someone be able to flip burgers, make art, clean up trash, care for the oceans, teach your children, or rescue animals without being forced to choose between their job and their bills?

What if I don't WANT to climb the ladder and use my degree and search for high stress high pay jobs in order to live? What if I want the high stress job of seeing a kitten crashing below survivable temperature and bringing them back from the brink of death, knowing that I'm the only thing standing between this homeless, unwanted kitten and an early grave?

Shouldn't that be enough? Shouldn't I be able to afford food and rent by doing that?

I don't want to work at a vet office that can give me steady pay increases. I want to work here, with cats who have no owners, nursing them back to health and helping pick their forever home. I want the infrastructure to support me in doing that. I want the laws to say I can and have programs in place to make it so my shelter CAN support me. I want rent to reflect wages. I want wages to reflect rent.

I want to help the world and be able to survive doing it. I want to thrive doing it. I want that for everyone.

Hmmmmmm

Why is it that the following tab, the tab one would assume would have, in chronological order, all of the posts from the people you follow, appear to be not that now?

I’ve thought something was weird for a while now, with how slow the following tab has been. I mean I use tumblr fairly often, but still, I’d get on after hours of not being on and maybe 2 posts/reblogs would’ve been made while I was gone.

Then today, just now, in fact, I decided to look at the for you tab. A tab I have avoided, because I want to see what I curated for myself to see by the people I chose to follow, and not an algorithm. What I found was so many posts and reblogs from people I am following. Posts that have date/time stamps for when I was online and should have seen them on my following tab

So what I’m understanding, here, is that apparently following someone and going to the fucking following tab wont show you EVERYTHING that person reblogs, just what tumblr decides you should fucking see I goddamn guess???

I hate this. Fuck the algorithms. Fuck the AI. Fuck all of this. If I fucking follow someone then show me their goddamn posts and reblogs in the fucking TAB LABELED GODDAMN FOLLOWING

So, when I wrote this, I haven’d slept in over 35 hours, and so bring to you a sleep deprived rant on why fruits basket is perfect and I love it. This may contain spoilers, as well as things you might find triggering.‼️ Please read with caution, as I will be taking about abuse a lot in this post‼️

Now with that, it’s time for me to rant about this show

Part one: The phycology

So to start, we have Torou, who comes across as seemingly perfect, almost to perfect. However, this isn’t for just a so-called perfect heroine that’s only problem is that she’s clumsy. Torou takes on the role of the person who takes care of herself and her friends as a response to the trauma of loosing her mom. Helping people, making sure other’s are happy, that is how Torou copes. She does this to be to others what she misses so much, and hopes this will help her be able to burry her sadness away. This isn’t just you cliché cutesy girl main character for a romance anime, she’s so much more then that.

Next, I’ll talk about Yuki’s trauma. He was taught from a young age that he was unlovable, gaslit and manipulated by Akito almost his whole life. He has fear of abandonment because of this and learned how to be this perfectly mannered young man because he’s afraid people will leave him if they know what he’s actually like. Enter Torou, who has this unconditional love for him, no matter what. Throughout the show, he is shown to be getting more comfortable showing his real self because he was shown that he isn’t unlovable. As he learns and grows, he starts to slowly make a start at recovery from Akito’s abuse. With the help of Torou, he feels good about himself, he’s allowing himself to laugh and. It may seem small, but just someone caring and showing love helps a lot In the proses of recovery for Yuki.

Next, Kyo. Kyo had been told from a young age that he was a disgrace to the family because he was the cat spirit, only being accepted by his mother after he sealed away his true form with his bracelet. Even his only friend at the time, Kagura, was afraid of his true form. Even if someone accepted him as the cat, no one had ever accepted his true form. Akito used this as a manipulation tactic to keep Kyo from disobeying. However, his guilt gets worse when his mother commits suicide from the stress of having her child be the cat. Kyo internalizes this, and ends up feeling even worse about himself. Eventually, his master took him in, and Kyo finally felt what it was like to be truly loved by a paternal figure, since his biological father resents him for being the cat spirit and causing the death of his wife. But despite being happy where he his with his master, he refuses to believe that he is worthy of being his master’s son, and gets offended on his masters behalf when referred to as such. Eventually, he goes to live with Shigure, Yuki, and Torou. Torou showed him love as well, unconditional love, and was the only person who not only accepted him no matter what, but also didn’t show any fear, or I guess not let the fear stop her from accepting and being there for Kyo, other then maybe his master. When Kyo’s true form is revealed around the end of season 1, not only does Torou fully accept him, she runs to him despite her fear, despite the fact that she’s afraid of Kyo’s true form. When Kyo sees her after he runs away from the house, he tries to make her not care anymore, afraid that Torou might meet the same fate as Kyo’s mom. Convinced that her caring about him will only hurt Torou. But despite his greatest attempt at making Torou resent him, she stays by his side and helps him turn back from his true form.

Part two: Sweet storyline

So, not only does Torou fully accept Kyo and Yuki for who they are, she actively embraces it, wanting to meet the other members of the zodiac. She shows the same kind of unconditional love to the rest of the zodiacs she meets, becoming a very important part of all of their lives, with my favourite example being Kisa. Kisa was bullied for her appearance, which was the way it was because of her being a member of the zodiac. She stopped speaking, became closed off and protective of herself. But Torou was there, Torou showed her a kind of love and adoration Kisa wasn’t used to, and through that she became very attached to Torou, with every time Kisa goes to visit, we basically only see her not with Torou once after she gets attached to her up to the point I’ve watched to. Torou shows all the members of the zodiac the love they crave, the acceptence they need. Look at Yuki’s relationship with her; Yuki was the first zodiac to become properly acquainted with her, growing to care for her deeply. The only time we see him seem truly happy and himself for most of the show are when he’s with Torou. Yuki is a very closed off person, trying to protect himself and not let anyone get to close, but Torou shows him that he does need to be afraid, that he is able to be loved. It’s a really sweet relationship dynamic, and I love it.

Part 3: Conclusion

This show manages to be so dark, yet so cute and sweet. It goes deep into things like generational trauma, manipulation, abuse, and other dark things, but it still has this happy feel to it, and has genuinely lovely characters with complex emotions and experiences, all of them having stuffed some amount of trauma, and we explore the effects and response of that trauma with them. This show seems like it would be boring or that all the characters would be one-dimensional, but they all have different sides to themselves and really good story building. On the surface, it’s just another romance anime with pretty men and a over clumsy yet cute and domestic girl as the main character, but it’s not. The show isn’t even about romance, really, it’s about how much one person supporting you can help, and how people are so much more then what you see. It’s about unconditional love of all kinds, about giving support to the people you care about. It’s such a well written show, and if this wasn’t enough for you to figure it out, I HIGHLY recommend you watch it if you haven’t already. Even if it doesn’t seem like something you would enjoy on the surface, even if you don’t like anime or romance, you should give it a try because it’s so much more “haha pretty man turn into animal and doesn’t have clothes when he comes back”(which doesn’t happen extremely often), it’s a truly beautiful show, and it goes deep into the phycological effects of abuse, neglect, isolation, loosing parents, generational trauma, and so much more, as well as how to start healing. Seriously, go watch fruits basket, it’s amazing.

So another one of my rants I like to go on when it’s about fandom culture lacking media literacy and not telling the difference between fiction and reality lol 😂

But anyway, I be seeing a lot of people get mad at people sexualizing their own OCS and drawing them in provocative or sexual ways (keep mine not them doing it to other people OCs but THEIR own OCs) it’s just so weird to me how the goal post will always be move. First it was “stop sexualizing fictional characters” now it’s “stop sexualizing your own fictional characters” lol 😂

Now as someone who has OCs in different fandoms by ALL means sexualize them to your heart content lol you want to make smut make some smut or fan art (because I can’t draw worth shit anyway) you can age them up or down, you can give them whatever kinks you like (I’m not really sure about scat or piss tho but do you) because fiction and fictional characters are like clay you can mold and make it into whatever you want.

Aggretsuko rant after finishing season 5

I may mention things about past seasons so BEWARE SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT

AGGRETSUKO SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT, BE CAREFUL

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Season 5 had me yelling, talking to myself and feeling like I need to start rewatching it right this instant after finishing it so that I can process everything properly. I really want to read comments and reviews about it but I’ll wait until I’m done writing this so that whatever I read doesn’t influence my rant. And don’t expect any order, rhyme or reason here, I can’t be bothered to make this look like a proper text.

THEY FUCKING GOT MARRIED? WHAT? WHAT? EXCUSE ME WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?????

It was incredibly cute and sweet how they just felt it was their time and eloped, no perfect wedding, no cute bride with her dress and no anything, just Haida and Retsuko. Four seasons raging because she wanted to be a cute bride with her wedding dress in a chapel and she ends up getting married at the registry in the middle of the night, who would have guessed! HOWEVER, it makes me sad that we didn’t see more about it. No rings, no family and friends’ reactions, not even a mention about it. This is supposed to be the final season, so the way A LOT of things were left makes me extremely confused.

We don’t know what Haida’s new job is. We don’t know who was behind the truck attack. We don’t know how come there’s a picture of them with Retsuko’s family now. We don’t know what the deal with Tadano, Gori and Washimi is. We don’t know how the stunt worked for OTM’s social media numbers. We don’t know what happened to that guy who offered Haida the construction work. There are so many things we don’t know! Idk, the ending felt a bit lackluster precisely because the second the elections ended the season was over and it feels there wasn’t proper closure for some points.

And why couldn’t we hear Shikabane singing??? ;__; It almost made me tear up how Retsuko offered her the microphone at the end, I was really hoping to hear them singing together.

I could relate a lot to Shikabane throughout the season. Those feelings of hopelessness, loneliness and having to constantly do something to keep your mind occupied so that you don’t succumb to those thoughts have been incredibly present in my life for the last months (going to therapy and relying on my supportive partner to try and get myself out of it), so I totally get where she was coming from and why she acts the way she does until the end. Plus her character design is SO CUTE. The platform shoes, the ribbons, the colour palette! Had me wishing I looked as cool and fashionable as her!

But Haida. OMG HAIDA. THIS GUY NEVER LEARNS. He was making bad decisions during season 4, but THIS. Retsuko is so patient with him, if my partner was ever in that situation and hid it from me that would probably be a deal breaker. Not because of him being jobless and homeless, but because I’d feel he doesn’t trust me and thinks I’m not reliable or that I won’t help him. He gets on my nerves so much, sometimes he’s the perfect ship for Retsuko and sometimes he just self-sabotages to the point of almost ruining his life. Annoyance aside though, I feel like their struggles as a couple are very realistic and I enjoy that. The struggles of all the characters in general are realistic.

AND SPEAKING OF SHIKABANE, HAIDA AND THE WHOLE NET CAFE THING. I was so shocked because literally two days ago I was watching a video by Nekojita vlog (Spanish-Japanese couple who has been doing Youtube for some years now) talking about this topic, women who live in manga kisas either because they cannot afford an apartment (with the money it would get you just to pay rent you have food, showers, washing machines, drinks, internet and a place to sleep if you find a good deal) or because their lifestyle is more suited to this (maybe they work most of the day/night and it is better to rent a booth for a few hours to crash there than be bothering with rent, bills, neighbours and all that stuff). I found the topic super interesting and it was quite a surprise to see it was one of the main points of the season.

The second part of the season threw me off a bit with the whole “suddenly Retsuko is running up for Parliament” thingy, I really dislike politics and it felt a bit like propaganda, it reminded me of this random Modern Family arc in which Claire is running for the council. Despite that, I think some real-life issues that need urgent addressing were mentioned and it would be good if that raised awareness about them in Japan, like how difficult and expensive it is to have your child in kindergarten (me hating politics doesn’t mean I don’t know about how messed up things are there). It also made me feel bad that Manaka and Hyodo kinda sold Retsuko to this creepy Ikari guy just so that they could get free publicity for OTM Girls. And Tadano buying the net cafe so that he can have it for himself??? He left so many people like Shikabane homeless with that move, he could just have remodeled his apartment. Overall this second part had some great moments but some bad stuff that leaves a bittersweet taste for me. And it annoys me that we don’t know who attacked Haida at the end so that Retsuko would quit!! I was so worried that he would die or end at the hospital and in the end nothing really comes out of this event (except for the eloping) and the next day he’s there playing with her (extremely cool btw) like he didn’t get hit by a truck the day before.

Selling Retsuko to Ikari for clout aside, I honestly felt jealous (in a good way) for Retsuko’s support network. I rewatched the whole thing during February so that I would be ready for season 5 and something that really caught my attention was how she gets more and more allies and how much teamwork there is.

Gori and Washimi the best friends ever!

Tadano who saves the day each time he appears, Retsy and him are cut out to be a couple but they sure are to be friends and allies!

Tsunoda and Fenneko being the unexpected wingman team?? They carried so much of seasons 4 and 5.

Anai doing a 180 and going from crazy newbie to someone who legit cares about his coworkers! He has evolved so much thanks to Kabae and his gf!

Director Ton OMG DIRECTOR TON, went from villain to that brutally honest but really supportive person who sometimes seems to know her better than anyone! And his daughters being part of the action of seasons 3 and 4?? And the whole family teamwork at the end of season 4 when they were trying to get the flash drive???? Loved that.

Manaka and the bodyguards making sure Retsuko was safe (Manaka in general with that bat full of nails is super cool). Though she’s still Manaka, 90% of the time I really like her but the other 10% I think she doesn’t care who she has to sacrifice for her idol career... Same goes for Hyodo.

It’s so wholesome to see how much she has evolved since the first season and how she relies on others and her trust is being rewarded.

I don’t really know what to think of her parents though. Her mother seems to have good intentions on the last seasons but in season 2 she’s just the most nosy and meddlesome mother ever. AND DON’T GET ME STARTED ON HAIDA’S FAMILY. I honestly feel bad for his mother, she looked so kind and she has to deal with crazy obsessive Juzo and Jiro. So manipulative, so money-centered, I don’t believe ONE BIT, what Jiro said about him not being behind the truck attack. And if he wasn’t him, it was their dad, how else would he know about what happened? I wanted Haida and Retsuko to tell them to shut their mouths and go to hell SO MUCH.

Random, but the Juliana’s references throughout the series gave me life XD The Bubbly Land ad made me crack up.

So no that the series is supposedly over, I think my fave season is season 3. To me it was perfect in every aspect: the plot, the character designs, the pacing, the ending, the soundtrack... Second place is shared by the Tadano arc in season 2 and the net cafe arc in season 5. Then we have the second part of season 4, all of season 1 and the second part of season 5. And finally the beginning of seasons 2 and 4. Not that Aggretsuko has any bad seasons or episodes, but I certainly cherish some more than others.

I said it before but I really think like I need to watch the season again to process everything that happened and gather my thoughts on it. Maybe I’ll do that tomorrow or in a few days, maybe not. If this is the end, I want to say that since I watched Retsuko for the first time I have related A LOT to the characters and their situations at different points of my life or regarding different aspects of it. The show has got me through so many shifts and has felt so cathartic when I was done with my job and wanted to death voice all my customers and coworkers. I’m so grateful that this show exists to drop a sea urchin in the desert from time to time and remind us that things aren’t as hopeless as they may seem.

I was thinking about Fruits Basket and it honestly disturbs me sometimes that Akito beat Kisa to the point of hospitalization. I wonder if she was planning to kill Kisa when she beat her and if she had to be held back until Kisa was taken away or she did it until she didn't feel like beating her anymore. The worst thing is that Hiro can't blame Akito since he's cursed. :/

also i completely agree. it is so infuriating how akito beat the stuffing out of kisa and it's like NEVER BROUGHT UP AGAIN??? beyond a one off scene of hiro feeling guilty and apologizing to kisa for something that wasn't even his fault. where tf is akito's apology??? wtf about kisa's trauma?? why do we never get any introspection about how BEING PHYSICALLY ASSAULTED affected kisa from HER perspective?? it's so bizarre how something as serious and severe as beating up kisa is treated as a "oh by the way, this happened!" and it feels like it gets barely any attention because kisa isn't a major character. kisa and rin are by far the worst victims of "i'm not important enough of a character for the author to take my trauma seriously and give it the screentime it deserves to digest it". i am convinced takaya hates women LOL because the only people who's conflict with akito are moderately resolved (moderately ADDRESSED) are kureno and yuki; rin and kisa are left with nothing.

sorry for the rant lmao akito's entire plotline and the way the story resolves the conflict between her and the other zodiacs makes me so unbelievably ragey you have no idea 😭

Tl;Dr: minimum wage is supposed to be the minimum amount someone who works full time on their own or part time with others should need to be able to live a comfortable life.

Tl;Dr: the cost of living currently would require minimum wage to be $16.54 (as of 2019). At the current rate of $7.25 a couple sharing living expenses has to work a 75 hour work week each while a single parent has to work a 138 hour work week.

Let me state for the record, the most I have made at a job was $10.50 and that was after 3 years and a starting pay raise that bumped me up a dollar in one go, and was for a company that had a union, which was the only reason I got as many pay raises as I did. Previous jobs regardless of how long I worked there I got a $.25 raise after 90 days and that was it.

Here’s the other thing, too; if they raise minimum wage to $15 an hour, everyone gets a raise. After all, if you are working as say a plumber for $15 an hour and minimum wage goes up to $15, your boss will need to raise what they pay you, because otherwise there’s nothing keeping you at that job and you could easily leave and go do an easier less labour intensive job and make the same amount. Your bosses will have to raise what they pay you to keep up and keep you working there. If minimum wage goes up, EVERYONES pay goes up.
