Yesterday, during a Russian attack on Ukrainian Air Defenses, Ukraine wasted 30 Patriot Interceptors to destroy Russian Hypersonic missiles.

Despite the launch of 30 Interceptors, a Kinzhal Hypersonic missile managed to get through the air defenses, damaging or destroying the Patriot Launcher itself.

Each Interceptor missile costs $4 Million a piece. So essentially, in this one single missile attack, Ukrainian forces launched $120 Million in Interceptors, none of which hit its target and the $1 Billion dollar Launcher was damaged or destroyed.

Meanwhile, our corrupt and Fascist government won't even invest $1 Billion into the Homelessness epidemic.

Russia smugly proclaimed a few years ago that nobody could shoot down its hypersonic missiles. Ukraine shot one of them down a few days ago using a US Patriot air defense system. 😁

Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk said in a Telegram post that the Kinzhal-type ballistic missile had been intercepted in an overnight attack on the Ukrainian capital earlier in the week. It was also the first time Ukraine is known to have used the Patriot defense systems.

“Yes, we shot down the ‘unique’ Kinzhal,” Oleshchuk wrote. “It happened during the night-time attack on May 4 in the skies of the Kyiv region.”

Oleshchuk said the Kh-47 missile was launched by a MiG-31K aircraft from Russian territory and was shot down with a Patriot missile.

The Kinzhal is one of the latest and most advanced Russian weapons. The Russian military says the air-launched ballistic missile has a range of up to 2,000 kilometers (about 1,250 miles) and flies at 10 times the speed of sound, making it hard to intercept.

A combination of hypersonic speed and a heavy warhead allows the Kinzhal to destroy heavily fortified targets, like underground bunkers or mountain tunnels.

Ukraine actually withheld news of this for a few days.

Yeah, let Putin waste more of his most expensive missiles before letting him understand they are now vulnerable to Ukrainian air defense. Of course, verifying that it was indeed a Kinzhal was important to the Ukrainians for the sake of accuracy.

The Kh-47M2 Kinzhal is one of the newer ballistic missiles in the Russian arsenal. It entered service in 2017, but already has been used extensively against Ukraine. The party trick of Kinzhal is that it is hypersonic – its max speed reaches Mach 10, which makes it incredibly difficult to take down.

In fact, for years Russia bragged that its Kinzhal missiles are virtually non-interceptable for NATO air defence systems. Russia claimed that they are simply too fast – hypersonic speeds allow them to enter the air defence zone so quickly that there is simply no time for air defence missiles to take off and meet Kinzhals. This is a scary thought, particularly having in mind that Kinzhal can carry a low yield nuclear warhead between 5 and 50 kt. However, at the beginning it appeared to be true – the U.S. defence officials conceded that NATO’s radar architectures are insufficient to detect and track hypersonic weapons.

Truth be told, tactical nuclear weapons have never been used in battle. Pretty much all Kinzhal missiles are armed with conventional high explosive warheads. They are still extremely dangerous. The Kh-47M2 Kinzhal is a ballistic missile – it should follow a ballistic trajectory, which is already difficult for most air defence systems to intercept. They are also air-launched, from such platforms as The MiG-31BM/K and Tu-22M3M. One Kinzhal missile weighs around 4.3 tonnes and reportedly has a range of less than 500 km (more than four times that, including the carrier aircraft).

However, the war in Ukraine showed that the Kinzhal is not indestructible – Patriot air defence missile systems can intercept it and do so regularly. Russia will not admit that, there are sceptics who are doubting these reports, but that is what was reported numerous times.

Some Kinzhal missiles – after interception or not – simply do not explode. For example, on January 5 sappers in Kyiv city had to remove an unexploded Kinzhal warhead from soft sandy soil.

According to the Ukrainian military, Russia launched 10 Kinzhal missiles during their mass attack on Ukraine on January 2nd. It was reported that all of these missiles were shot down, but who knows – maybe that warhead remained intact. The good thing is that without its hypersonic body it is not that special.

The conventional warhead in the Kinzhal missile is not any more dangerous than other munitions of that size. This makes their removal and disposal a relatively routine procedure.

The cost of a Kinzhal missile is unknown. It should be between 10-15 million dollars per unit, but some sources put that estimate much higher.

Russia deploys MiG-31 jets with Kinzhal missiles to patrol the Black Sea

From 19 October, by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Russian Aerospace Forces will patrol the waters of the Black Sea using modern MiG-31 fighters equipped with the Kinzhal long-range hypersonic weapon.

Vladimir Putin said, according to state news agency Interfax:

“This is not a threat… Based on my instructions, the Russian Aerospace Forces will begin patrols on a permanent basis in the neutral zone of airspace over the Black Sea, and the MiG-31 aircraft will be armed with Kinzhal systems.”

Kinzhal missiles are one of the most advanced Russian weapons. They have a range of over 1,000 kilometers and a speed of Mach 9. The missiles are carried by specially equipped MiG-31K interceptor fighters. Thanks to its low radar visibility and exceptional manoeuvrability, the Kinzhal is easy to hit both naval and ground targets.

Cette très brève et très approximative étude me convainct que tant que les russes auront de l’avance sur les USA en matière de missiles à très grande vitesse, les Kinzhal avec ou sans charges nucléaires et leurs descendants feront échec à tous les armements US imaginables, atomiques, voire thermonucléaires ou non. Si j’avais du pouvoir, je demanderais à mes savants de faire le maximum pour augmenter ette énorme vitesse. Par exemple, si on passe à 20 Mach au lieu de 10 Mach, l’énergie au contact du sol sera multipliée par 4 et si on arrive à Mach30, alors l’énergie au contact du sol sera presque 10 fois supérieure, ce qui montre qu’alors aucun abri souterrain ne sera plus possible pour l’ennemi (l’avantage du Kinzhal sera alors de l’ordre de milliers de fois plus de force au contact du sol que par un armement nucléaire ou thermonucléaire). Il me semble donc vital pour la Russie qu’elle appronfondisse et augmente cette avance au maximum et surtout, qu’elle fasse tout ce qu’il faut pour éviter que la trahison aide les USA à fabriquer eux aussi des missiles du type Kinzhal. I know you said that you aren't the pinnacle of military knowledge that people think you are but know a damsite more than I do about the US military than I do, so I have a question. Do you have any idea how long the Darkstar project would've been going on for in canon? It can't have been a few months but I also don't know if it would be years and years? I know Mav has an award for being a test pilot that I think is dated 2007 (I may have imagined that) but that doesn't mean the Darkstar project was going on for over ten years? I think the F-18A took 8 years from testing to being approved, so it can't be far off. Just wanted your opinion. Thanks :-)

awright here’s my opinion (not an expert)

the darkstar is canonically a Lockheed Martin “skunk works” (super duper secret) surveillance and reconnaissance (SR) spyplane, as evidenced by the skunk works logo on the vertical stabilizer (left is darkstar, right is me with the SW logo on the SR-71 blackbird at the udvar-hazy museum this summer).

we can look to see how long other SW projects have taken to develop in the past. the SR-71, for instance, was first suggested as an “undetectable spyplane” idea in 1957. the lockheed A-12 oxcart, which would provide the framework for the SR-71, had its first flight in 1962, five years later. the finished SR-71 was introduced into USAF and CIA service in 1966. so a 9-year development for the fastest-ever air-breathing jet, with 4-ish of those years being flight testing (ish because the A-12 had to be heavily adapted into the SR-71 which had its first flight in 1964).

Lockheed’s been teasing its blackbird successor, the unmanned aerial vehicle the SR-72 “son of blackbird,” on its socials recently. i saw someone say: “soft-launching its new death machine like an instagram influencer with a new boyfriend”

note however that the SR-72 son of blackbird is an UNMANNED aerial vehicle (UAV) which is why in my fic I specifically said this

note also that most of aircraft development is just that—development. Flight testing (i.e. where mav would get hands-on involved) doesn’t come until very very late in the development process. For the plot of my fic’s sake I had mav go out to NAWS china lake in 2003, but in TGM during the Hard Deck scene Penny says something to the effect of “you got sent out to the desert three years ago for pissing off that other admiral” and mav goes “that was three years ago? 😀” (cute!) so that’s the longest mav could’ve canonically been involved with the darkstar project. (For my own purposes i made it like a year, for those two sections of the story to neatly flow into each other—from 2015ish to 2016. I know TGM takes place in 2020 [i know but idfc] Maybe LockMart has had this tech [probably not high hypersonic like in the movie] for that long anyway and it’s just been so heavily classified that we didn’t know about it till very recently. Definitely possible.)

P.S. If an airplane of a Western country lost parts of its armament and they fell in the inhabited areas of its civilian population, then the "objective" media of the West would scream as loud as possible, but in the case of Russia, these same objective media are silent as if they have water in their mouths.

Windows were shattered in two bureau buildings, and the facades of two buildings were also damaged. Early reports indicate that there are no casualties. Missiles produced at the Kolomna facility have been used against Ukrainian civilians. Unfortunately, the plant was damaged though not destroyed. Hopefully the Ukrainians will try again.

Meanwhile, Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced that her government will be significantly boosting aid to Ukraine over the next few months despite the distractions in the Middle East.
