One small detail I can’t stop thinking about is when you rescue Hans from Maleshov and flee with the horses, then pass through the burnt down village. He talks about how horrible and wrong it is while Vauquelin tells him rather coldly and matter-of-factly, “That’s war.”

But Hans doesn’t accept this and disagrees because he’s morally good. He doesn’t believe in the slaughtering of innocents under any circumstances, but there’s another reason why he challenges Vauquelin’s view so vehemently—because of Henry. Because he knows all that Henry has lost, knows the scars it’s left him with. He saw the ugliest parts of Henry’s grief while dragging him through that forest at the start of their journey.

And in that moment of watching his best friend hallucinate and painfully relive visions of a massacred past, ghosts of misfortune that changed Henry’s life so drastically, mercilessly and irreparably, Hans’ heart broke. You can hear it breaking with each desperate attempt to keep Henry alive and grounded.

War takes most, grief takes all. Not only did it take everything from Henry in Skalitz but it almost took everything from Hans too. It almost took Henry from him.

In a way, that moment of challenging Vauquelin in the village was Hans’ way of letting Henry know that he sees him, cares for him. That he cares about all he’s suffered and never wants him, or anyone else, to go through that again. That if he were there with him in Skalitz, he would’ve said something, done something, anything besides nothing at all.

But he’s here now. And even if he can’t change the past, he can damn well stand by Henry’s side to shape a gentler future together.

This scene...

Noa mourning his dad was so heartbreaking to see. I was expecting him to cry like a human would. But him kneeling and curling up like a ball, The way his eyes shift thinking and taking it all in and silently shedding tears was so impactful. The silence was loud! 💯

Turns out Owen did some research on how Chimpanzees understand the concept of death and how they mourn.

and it made the scene more heartbreaking! I love that they're giving alot of thought into bringing Noa to life. Its just perfect. 👌
