Prince George of Wales and his "chum" Princess Marie of Edinburgh (Missy)
Marie of Edinburgh (Marie Alexandra Victoria; 1875 – 1938) was born into the British royal family. Her parents were Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (later the reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha) and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia (daughter of Tsar Alexander II).
"Missy" (her nickname) grew into a “lovely young woman” with “sparkling blue eyes and silky fair hair.” She did not lack suitors from a young age and was courted by several royal bachelors, including Prince George of Wales. Prince George served for many years under his uncle, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, as a naval cadet in Malta. There, he grew close to young Marie.
Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Edinburgh all approved of the match. Missy seemed ameneable to the idea of George as a possible husband. George's mother, Alexandra Princess of Wales and Marie's mother, the Duchess of Edinburgh vetoed the match. The Duchess of Edinburgh did not wish for her daughter to remain in England, she never liked her husbands native land.
Another reason the Duchess of Edinburgh was against the idea of the marriage between George and Marie was the fact that they were first cousins and although first cousin marriages were accepted in England, they were not permitted by the Russian Orthodox Church.
Thus, when George officially proposed to her, Marie did as she was told by her mother and informed him that the marriage was impossible and that he must remain her “beloved chum”. Marie's father was devastated, as his dearest dream had been to see Marie married to George.
George continued on his unhurried search for a suitable Princess to marry and found a solid and beloved life partner in Princess Mary of Teck (who had been his brother's fiance.) Marie married the Crowned Prince of Romania, Ferdinand.
Marie kept gifts that George gave her during their courtship until her death, and they remained close friends for the whole of their lives. In 1901, well after they had both married other people, she wrote to him that those years in Malta were the happiest she ever had.

Beautiful Marie (Missy) of Romania was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England and of Tsar Alexander II. Her mother was the only surviving daughter of Alexander II, Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, and her father was Queen Victoria's fourth child and second son, Alfred (Affie) Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
When she started getting close to marriageable age, just about every Prince wanted her...her father's dream was that she should marry the future George V (and Georgie was willing), but her mother did not want her to marry in England. Grand Duke George Mikhailovich also tried to "apply" for the position and was sent packing. Marie eventually married Crowned Prince Ferdinand of Romania. She was very popular in her adopted country when she was Crowned Princess and during her reign.

Greek and Romanian relatives in Romania.
The Greek Royal family was descended from Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna, and the third generation of the Romanians from Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna. In the front we have Princess Irene Greece, over her shoulder is her sister, Helen, who was married to Carol of Romania (the man in front on the right). In the back, with her head tilted slightly is Irene and Helen's cousin Princess Elizabeth of Greece, daughter of Elena Vladimirovna. The man in the hat on the right in King Ferdinand.

Who do you think are the 3 most beautiful granddaughters of Queen Victoria?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beauty is a subjective matter, and different people may have different preferences and tastes.
I'm sure that all the granddaughters of Queen Victoria are beautiful and unique in their own way... 💓🫶🥺 However, in my opinion, 3 of the most beautiful granddaughters of Queen Victoria are included:
- Princess Margaret of Connaught (1882–1920) was the daughter of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She married Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, the future King Gustaf VI Adolf, in 1905 and became the Crown Princess of Sweden. She was known for her beauty, intelligence, and charm, and was popular among the Swedish people. She died in 1920, at the age of 38.
- Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh (1876–1936) was the daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She married twice: first to her cousin Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse; and second to another cousin Kirill Vladimirovich, Grand Duke of Russia. She was considered a beauty in her youth, with dark hair and blue eyes. She was also interested in music and art, and supported her husband's claim to the Russian throne after the revolution.
- Princess Marie of Edinburgh (1875–1938) was the daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She married King Ferdinand I of Romania in 1893. She was admired for her beauty, elegance, and style, and was nicknamed "the pearl of the crown" by the Romanian people. She was also a patron of arts and culture, and a humanitarian who helped refugees.

Introduction
Do you have opinions on the Serene House of Bragança (or Braganza) Do you wish to join the Brigantine Dynasty as it streches from East Timor to Brazil. Do you wish to eat Caldo Verde in a hot day in Portugal. Do you enjoy seeing drama, plotting, consorts more interesting than their Bragança husbands and the glory that is coming to Brazil? If so this defunct house of rulers that has had claimants and candidates to the thrones of Greece and Poland, as well as Monarchs of Portugal and royal consorts that have provided Monarchs such as Ferdinand of Romania? Dilettantes including the Infante Manuel de Bragança? and of course the Glorious Kings of Portugal and the Emperors of Brazil? If so, come to Brazil Join the tournament to discover the best Bragança!
Listen we may not be as dramatic as the Habsburgs or the Bourbons, but in terms of drama, we are the little house that could (so much drama (the War of the Brothers, the scheming of Carlota Joaquina, João V and his strong love of the catholic church)
Rules:
Who will be included in your lists? Much like notable brackets of Central Europe, we will include unconventional figures who may technically be considered members of other dynasties including *sighs*...at least a few Hohenzollerns (But unlike the @best-hohenzollern-ruler bracket, these will be ROMANIAN HOHENZOLLERNS; which is better).
We will also include the consorts from other royal families whose ambitions, intellect, and force of will may have outshone their admittedly mediocre Bragança spouses (Carlota Joaquina of the Bourbons is fascinating as is Maria Leopoldina of Austria)
Is propaganda encouraged?
Absolutely, as Lilia Schwarcz shows for Pedro II of Brazil, propaganda and pageantry are essential for the construction of the Bragança dynasty and monarchy! As such, It is also essential for this bracket!
Why is everyone a Pedro or João?
Hey, those are perfectly good names....but we also have two Marias who reigned in their own right (Actually, a lot more Marias in this bracket!) We also have some Afonsos
What regnal numbers will you be using?
Honestly, we will be using the Portuguese regnal numbers up until Pedro II of Brazil, who will have emperor in his title to distinguish him (Pedro I of Brazil/ IV of Portugal will have both)/ We will also include a few dukes.
Which language will you be using for the names?
Portuguese....do you really want to deal with a bunch of Johns and Peters?
How would you like it if, say a Habsburg Bracket, called Franz Joseph
Francisco José? It would be weird.
What is your relation to @best-hohenzollern-ruler, @best-habsburg-monarch, and the @best-bourbon-monarch?
Much like the Duke João of Braganza ( the future King João IV of Portugal) we bravely broke off from the @best-habsburg-monarch's bracket to form our own path! However, as is our want, we deeply appreciate the Habsburgs, the Bourbons, and the Hohenzollerns. Thus, we have maintained our propensity to intermarry into each of these families and their membership has joined us as well. So @best-hohenzollern-ruler @best-bourbon-monarch and @best-habsburg-monarch, friends? Also, @rulers-of-poland-tournament, Infante Manuel de Bragança really thinks y'all are swell!
