Trigger warning ⚠️ domestic violence.

I've typed this story a million times so I'm just going to summarize as much as I can.

A few days ago I was assaulted by my partner's family members. And as I've mentioned, I've typed this a million times and I'm honestly just exhausted thinking about it, but we could use some help.

My partner has always had a transphobic family. (I don't have anyone but my dad, who's in no position to help anyone.)

Her mom used her disability against her and manipulated her into giving her MOST of her checks. She's abused the system and my girlfriend.

When I met Jackie, she was with a terrible biggot. Jackie had came out, and her mother conspired with an abusive long distance ex, to fly her here, to stage an "intervention" and stop my partner from transitioning.

It worked. For years.

I met Jackie here on tumblr, we became good, SECRET friends because she wasn't allowed to talk to anyone.

I told Jackie openly about my views regarding gender and how I myself, was not cis.

Eventually she told her partner about us playing games together, which she responded to by harassing me.

Jackie ended up spilling the beans to me, about her mom, about the ex, everything. I realized that she had been extremely isolated and controlled her whole life.

So I intervened.

I got the two of them to separate, which wasn't smooth because Jackie was scared. She had been with her abuser for 9 years at this point. She's never known anything else.

The ex moved back to her state, and I started seeing Jackie, although she was stuck at her mom's... who was trying to play innocent at this time.

Eventually, I kinda just came and picked her up, she stayed the night, she didn't want to go back home. And I can't blame her. The house wasn't only disgusting, her family microagressed her all the time and they would tell her to pretty much stay in a dark room all day.

Ofc I didn't bring her back.

During early quarantine, we had a lot of self reflection and she started distancing herself from her mother, coming around to holding her accountable for her horrible actions.

Her mom messaged her things like "Why won't you talk to me? It's like you're trying to punish us!" Ect, just every fucking manipulative thing she could say, without ever apologizing.

Unfortunately the place we were staying fell through when my best friend's ex husband decided he wants a divorce and decided to throw in some transphobic hatespeach towards me.

We were all looking for somewhere to go.

I'm sure you know where this is going but listen, she told us EVERYTHING we wanted to hear. She told us she's not hateful now, told us she would go to trans support groups, pride, said she's realized how much she loves Jackie and it's time to accept her- and look- we had NO WHERE TO GO. We have 2 cats and at the time, a car that has no a/c or functional locks. AND I have a chronic autoimmune condition that I recently started taking chemo meds for. (Methotrexate.)

I'm too sick to be on the street, and survive. I had to think about me, Jackie, Zoe, and Boops.

And Jackie wanted to go..

I told her we'd be cautious and try to get out asap.

Well, looking for places right when the housing market crashed really fucked us up. That- and because I had only just finally got approved for disability, means I was set back in life- and had no credit to my name. No credit= no place to live.

I had almost built enough, but things went down hill very quickly with her family. Which leads us to right now:

After weeks of microagressions, giving us breakthrough covid cases, yelling at us to clean other's messes, and forcing us and our cats to isolate in our room, many broken promises, and straight up transphobic hatespeach (because she promised to get vaccinated but then said nvm as soon as we moved in and she went on vacation and got covid and gave it to us, which nearly killed me--) she said not getting the vaccine "IS A CHOICE, JUST LIKE YOU BEING TRANS AND TAKING *gestures to my testosterone* THOSE DRUGS."

We just were avoiding each other while I desperately try to gather resources for us to get out, NOW.

Of course, that wasn't good enough, so when her step father messaged her in all caps about our cats having to stay in our room and "I WON'T FUCKING TELL YOU AGAIN" my partner had a breakdown..

Her mom had let her step dad talk to her like this her whole life, basically.

Out of desperation, we went to her sister for help, maybe hoping she'd give us a place to stay for two weeks while we sign off on the lease for our new apartment.

She pretended to want to help and even said... something fucking weird? She made the comment that I'm a good person and I'm so much like her own boyfriend, that it's "scary"...

A few hours later she came to the house. She talked nicely to us, to gain access to our bedroom.

Then she attacked me.

I called the police right before, and was on the phone with dispatch when she lunged at me because she was aggressively trying to MAKE Jackie go into a separate room WITHOUT ME and Jackie was saying no, BEGGING her to STOP.

I wasn't going to let her take Jackie into that room. She looked fucking crazy.

All of the family came into our room, her two sisters, her mom, and her cousin- When they heard yelling.

It was actually me telling her mom that she's a terrible mother, that triggered her sister to try and attack me- although I knew she was planning on trying to from the moment she came into our room.

And that was after her mom was screaming in my face that if I have something to say, say it now.

Dispatch heard everything and sent emt as well...

But the police stayed outside, talking to them for a WHILE before even asking for us.

Her cousin is the only one that would have stood up for me, saying her sister never should have tried to hit me. But he was in the room with Jackie, giving her support...

I faced the cops alone.

He already had "that look."

He shined a light into my eye, letting the family stay on the porch, throwing insults and just letting it happen. He asked me where I'm hurt, and before I could even show him the scratches on my arm, he said "how do I know YOU didn't put those there?"

I wanted to fucking die in that moment.

This is a conservative city.

No one has equality stickers here. No one flies gay flags. People here that are lgbt- they LEAVE.

This is EXACTLY WHY.

I said "well is there any reason I should tell you anything when, clearly, you're already bias?"

I looked at the emts. I looked at his partner. I looked at all the lights and people coming out of their houses-

And behind me was her family.

Her sister that assaulted me, was laughing about having work in the morning.

All of them were looking at me, with hate in their eyes.

He tried to feed me bullshit about "well if I'm taking someone to jail, there has to be proof."

He dismissed everything I attempted to say, until I just stared at the ground and he decided he did his job here.

I told him my whole fucking body hurts because I had 4 people fucking toss my 100lbs ass all over the fucking room, which was a mess that he refused to look at.

He said "I don't see bruises."

I SPAT "BRUISES TAKE TIME?"

He retorted IMMEDIATELY- "YOU'RE NOT EVEN RED."

I asked what about the dispatcher- she seemed concerned- to which he said "you see, sometimes when people call us- they scream and be dramatic- for a quicker response."

I asked what we could do while the two weeks go by for our new place, and he fucking said "I DONT KNOW. BARRICADE YOURSELF IN YOUR ROOM OR SOMETHING."

Needless to say, we are now safe, in a hotel and I've gotten in touch with a few lgbt organizations that are attempting to help us get justice.

Unfortunately because it's a holiday weekend, all we can do is wait right now.

Our first order of business is getting a protection order, so that we can retrieve the rest of our things without her sister trying to attack us again. (I say us because she kept jumping towards Jackie, like she was threatening to hit her.)

I've been so gaslit and victim blamed that I was too scared to go to the er, even though this all happened in the midst of a flare, possibly including my liver health.

There's so much more to this story, as I'm sure other trans people can relate.. unfortunately.

The emts reluctantly offered to take me to the er, but I was like "and leave my partner here with them?" And he just fucking shrugged dude.

I hate this city.

I want out so bad but unfortunately I've committed to a year, but at least it'll be *our* apartment.

We could NOT stay there for two more weeks. Her step dad is a violent offender that has attempted to murder a homeless prostitute over some fucking pocket change- and he has a GUN in the house.

This hotel might run us into a hole, despite it being the cheapest, shittiest hotel in town, it's still going to be about 700$ for ONE week.

To ADD INSULT TO INJURY, SOMEONE ATTEMPTED TO STEAL MY VEHICLE WHILE WE'VE BEEN STAYING HERE.

I'm feeling incredibly paranoid and unsafe, but I'm on anxiety meds now at least and its SORTA helping us cope (My partner and I have the same Dr and she gave her permission to have some.)

The organization BRAVO is trying to help us with a hotel voucher, but because of all the natural disasters, it's hard to find room in charity for people like us, which is fair enough. We aren't immediately on the street, and for that I'm incredibly thankful.

I will update on things once our case moves along more, and we were already considering turning to OF sexwork before all of this, so if there could be support that way, maybe we'll get that going once we get moved in. That way, I feel good about providing a service in return.

Thank you so much for sticking with us during all of this. And really- we're doing much better today. We've given each other pep talks, but we are still determined to start our lives together.

Her family was merely trying to scare me away from her, but I got my girl's name tatted on me for a reason.

I know I'm not the bad person here.

Every time Jackie is feeling more gender euphoric, and showing me her changes, and seeing her get more confident, the more I know that what I'm doing with and for her, is right.

I love her so much. And I will never abandon her, like they tried to get me to do.

Jackie is taking a break from some socials, but she's given me permission to talk about what's been happening.

She needs justice too.

I will update as much as I can, but seriously, I think we both just have a fire under our asses now.

Mentally, we're stronger than ever.

Geonhak lost track on time on how long he has been standing in front of the door. He has been waiting for this day. He was both nervous and scared with the reaction he is going to see or will there will be any reaction. Before he entered the door, the man asks him again.

“Mr. Kim, I’d like to ask you again.”, the man paused. Geonhak slowly nod his head before turning to the man next to him, eyes with questions too. “What is the last thing you remember about her?”, he ask. Geonhak’s search into his eyes. He was not looking any answers to his question but rather looking for why is he asking it.

“She looks like she was under a lot of pressure.”, Geonhak slowly said and the man nods, understood.

“Do you still remember how she look before she left you?”, the man ask again and Geonhak nods.

“She’s still beautiful in my eyes.”, he was quiet. “…or am I too ignorant to understand what she was trying to say?”, he question himself. However, the man in-front of him did not say anything more. He brought his palm to rest on Geonhak’s shoulder.

“Remember, she will not the same person you see months ago.”, he reminds Geonhak and he nods.

“I understand that.”

With that, the man walk away and left Geonhak stood in front of the door. After seems like he finally calm down, he embrace himself to open the door slowly. The door creaks a little bit and soon as he step inside of the room, he immediately felt coldness. It was not a weird thing for him anymore.

His eyes wonders through the cold room. Sure sunlight did go through this room but he cannot feel the warmth and heat that he used to. This is probably how she felt before she met me, he thought. Geonhak saw a queen size bed at another section in the room. He would say, your room is as big as his shabby rental house.

Then, he spot you on the bed. You are not sleeping but you are not awake either. Slowly, he walks towards your bed and drop on his knees when he sees you in this kind of state. He crawled closer to you and took your hand into his.

It was cold, very, very cold.

If the man before did not tell him about your condition, he may think you are already dead. Geonhak was not use of this state of yours. Your body used to be really healthy but now all he could see are skin and bones. It seems like you have been starve yourself for years. Your bright eyes were now dull. Your skin may be pale but it was never blue, like right now. Sure you always feel cold but now you’re freezing.

“Hey, I’m here now.”, he whispers on your ear. “Everything will be fine now. Everything will be fine.”

Geonhak sighs as soon as he step out from the night club. It was almost four in the morning and he was glad that he finished his shift early. He could go home, refreshing himself a little bit or taking a nap before going to class. However he was interrupted by a girl who was walking in a fast pace and was actually bumped onto him.

“Watch out!”, he warned the girl but she did not say anything. Instead of apologising or walk away, the girl grabbed his hand and interlocking her fingers with his. Geonhak was startled by her action and tried to pull it away but he could not.

“Wow.”, was the only thing she said. Her eyes sparkles in excitement.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”, he asks as he trying to pull away again and this time he managed. He began to eye her from head to toe. Thanks to the club signs, he could see her. Well, not clearly but he definitely see her face and she somehow looks familiar.

Red stripes t-shirt, black leather jacket, padded coat jacket, black leather pants and black boots.

It’s summer! He thought.

“Who are you?”, she asks, smiling. Her smiles was not a fake or an awkward one. Geonhak scoffs, feeling ridiculous. Before he could answer her, she cut him off.

“Is this your bike?”, she asked again and without any notice, she climbed on his bike. He gasped at her weirdness.

I’m tired and I really can’t stand her weirdness right now, he thought.

Slowly he made his way to the bike and rest his arm on the handle, again eyeing her from head to toe. “Get off.”, he said but she did not even budge from the back seat of the bike.

“Can you give me a ride, it’s kinda late.”.

Whoever the girl is, she is driving him crazy.

Apparently, the girl is attending the same university as he is and to make worst, she is in the same department. It’s been a week since the incident and she keep on following him him. She will follow him everywhere even the toilet. She did not went inside but she wait for him outside and sometimes it made other men uncomfortable with it.

“Why is that chick keep following you?”, one of his friend asks and Geonhak shrugs. Honestly, he does not know why too. That was until he decided to have a talk with her.

It was one evening when they are finally done with all the lectures. He grabs her hand and dragged her to the back of their department. “Okay. Now spill what do you want with me?”, he asked. The girl was confuse but finally catch on.

“I need you to be with me.”, she said. Geonhak had to admit, she knew this girl is weird and all but he never knew how bold she was.

There she is, finally out of her mind. He thought.

“What kind of b—“, again he was cut by her.

“This is not some bullshits. I know it sounds weird, but it is not is sounds like.”, she tried to reason with him. He sighed before pinching the bridge of his nose and then let out a groaned.

“Okay…”, paused. “Then what does this sounds like?”, he looked up, avoiding her gaze. He would look everywhere but not her eyes.

“I need you to be by my side 24/7.”, she said. Geonhak groaned again.

“That is what exactly what it sounds like!”, he snaps which made her laugh a bit.

“It may sound a little bit ridiculous but—“, she paused, thinking either to say it or not but she actually does not know how to explain these things to him. “Nevermind, it did sounds what it's like.”, she added.

“I have a deal to make with you. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t push this one away.”, she said confidently after seeing that Geonhak may not talking in any second.

“And what is that?”, he asked.

“I knew you have been struggling with financial. Youer school fees these days, allowance, rental—“

“Hold on a second.”, he stops her as he raised his palm up to her face. His eyes were now went wide and actually shock that she knew about his financial problem when he never told anyone, including his friends.

“I have my ways.”. she answers him.

“Are you blackmailing me?!”, he was ready to fight. “What, are you going to tell everyone that I was working at the club?!”,

“I—“, she sighed. “Can you please, let me talk?”, she desperately asks.

Geonhak says nothing after that. “First of all, no I’m not blackmailing you. I want to help you and I want you to help me too. Second of all, I don’t even know you were working at the club until now.”, she paused, taking a breath. “I thought you like went to club because apparently, I saw you went there everyday.”

Geonhak tried to process whatever she was saying and finally understood.

“What kind of help?”, he asks but he does not know why he feel something is wrong.

“I said it before. I need you to be with me.”, she said. “What the hell do you mean by that?”, Geonhak seems lost. If it is not what he think it is, then what does she mean? The girl could sense that Geonhak was feeling uncomfortable about her proposal but she does not how to explain it to him.

“You can quit all your part time jobs, I’ll help you financially without no condition at all.”, she said. Honestly, Geonhak was tempted because he was indeed in need of money and those part time jobs that he had actually are not enough.

“Yeah right as if I would believe you.”

“Oh you would.”, she smiles.

“Uh, come in? I guess.”, Geonhak found himself bringing the girl home with him though he has a lot of doubts in her proposal. He wanted to reject the idea of being by her side, it is what she called it but she proved him wrong and she is not playing at all.

She dragged him to the finance office and settled all of his debts just like that, right in front of him. “Now would you believe me?”, she asked. Geonhak was speechless but nods his head, he believed her. “Can we go to your house?”

And they are here, in his shabby house. Geonhak was worried about her impression of his house. It was not messy but it was not that clean either. By the look on how she spent all her money on him just like that, he knew she was out of his league.

“You don’t have time cleaning your house?”, she asks as soon as she stepped inside and sat on the floor like she own the house.

“I had three part time jobs. When do I have the time to clean the house?”, he asked and went straight to his bed. She nods, he got a point. After that, she walked to his small balcony where he do his laundry, she went to his small kitchen and the toilet.

“Do you really have to check around the house?”, Geonhak asks, feeling a little bit annoyed and uncomfortable. She gave an awkward smile before making her way to him. “Geonhak, do you have extra blankets or mattress?”, she asks.

“I do have extra blanket but mattress— I don’t think so.”, he paused. “Wait, why—“

“Blanket will do then.”, she said. Before went back to the small living room where she sat just now and took out her phone.

“What do you mean?”, he asks.

“I’m moving in.”, she smiles.

Geonhak was confuse and speechless. Does her proposal includes living with me? But the house is—, he thoughts. Before he could protest, she already ended his call with someone.

“Hey, does your proposal meant you need to live with me too?”

She nods.

However, his face was unreadable. She does not know if he was happy, sad, mad or confuse. Geonhak says nothing afterwards but she knew he has a lot in his mind right now. She slowly made her way back to him and sat beside him on his mattress.

“This house may be a bit uncomfortable than yours. I think—“, he was cut again. “I’ve been in worst place than this. Your house is actually better than I expected, just need a little bit cleaning and I’ll gladly help you with it.”, she add.

“Your house is warm.”, she smiles. Geonhak does not know what does she meant by warm but yeah it is kinda hot these days because it is summer. Now, speaking of summer— why does she wear a lot of layer of clothes when it is summer.

“Yeah because you wear a lot of layers. Don’t you get heat stroke in that?”, he asks. She laughs at his remarks. She get this a lot, people worrying about her wearing quite layers of clothes when it is summer time but she is actually freezing.

“I’ll explain to you now but please, please believe in me.”

Geonhak is still beside your bed, holding your skinny and cold hand. Usually, it would get warm quickly but this time it seems like you would never get warm. Your skins are still blue and does not show any sign of changing color in any time soon.

Her door creaks open again and saw the man who brought him to her earlier. He came inside with a tray full of foods, enough for two people. “You need to eat something for your energy too.”, the man said. He then turn around and open the cabinet next to her bed. Geonhak says nothing as he watched the man do his job.

“This is how we keep her alive this pass few months. She’s alive but she looks like the dead.”, the man starts. Smiling though he could see the pain in his eyes. Geonhak was pretty sure everyone is sad with your condition right now, especially him.

“When she told me she had sacrificed herself for you, I was mad.”, he laugh. “But again, it was the right thing to do.”, he added. Geonhak watched him brought the tube to your nose and it slowly went into the organ.

“We have doctor who experts in these kind of things. Normal doctor would not believe in supernatural. If we send her to the hospital, they’d probably declare her dead.”

“Mr. Kang—“

“Just call me Hyungu.”, he smiles.

“About the other way, you told me before. What was it?”

“Yeah, like I am going to believe that.”, he laughed when she told him that she can see the dead. She can see the unrested spirit around her and sometimes, they would come after her because those spirits know the power that she hold.

More like, she brought the lights into their dark world and they need her lights to move on to the after life, but the dead are a little extreme than the living.

For her entire life, she never know what is warmth. She does not even know how it feel like. When she accidentally bumped with Geonhak in front of the club, she knew that she finally found her keeper but he does not believe her and she had no idea how to prove it to him. The only way she could prove it by bring him to the underworld but it is not going to happen.

It is very dangerous.

“How about this.”, she pause as she hugged herself. “Gave me three months to prove it to you. If I can’t, I’ll go. I’ll leave you alone. I promise.”, she add. Of course, Geonhak is skeptical because he think she was just making things up just to stay with him longer.

“Just say that you want to stay here more longer.”, he scoffs. He stood up from his bed and began to take off his shirts and pants, before grabbing his towel. “Well yeah…you may think that way if you want.”, her sudden voice creeps behind him did surprise him a little and quickly put his towel around his waist.

“Hey, don’t tell me you’re coming into the bathroom too?”, Geonhak eyed her up and down while she gave him an innocent look.

“I can’t…?”

“Hell no! Get out!’, he shouted and slammed the door in front of her face.

After a good ten minutes of shower, Geonhak came out from his bathroom and again he was surprise by the girl who was in the house with him. She sat beside of the doorway as she hugs her legs. “Can you—“, he sighs.

“...stop made me scared for no reasons?”, he said and made his way to his small dresser, pulling out his shorts and a wife beater— his pyjama.

“I felt save, so I sat there.”, she answers him. Even when Geonhak is trying to dress himself, she would still followed him around.

“Why are you keep following me?”, he was annoyed but in the same time, he was curious.

“I told you I need to by your side.”, she said.

Geonhak sighed. “We can’t.”, he paused. “Look at my bed. It’s too small and I don’t even have a condom with me.”

She was lost at first when Geonhak told her the bed was too small. Her gaze followed his, as he look over his bed but when Geonhak brought up condom, she lost it. She could not help but laugh at the fact that for the whole day Geonhak thought she was trying to have sex with him.

Geonhak gave her a look as soon as she laugh. What’s so funny? He thought.

“Dumbass, I wasn’t thinking about it at all.”, she told him. “Let me re-explain this deal again to you. I need you to be by my side 24/7 without sexual activities.”, she emphasised the word without so that there will no longer any misunderstanding in the future.

“Mr. Kim, are you sure you want to do this? It can be really dangerous.”, Hyungu asks Geonhak again as he tied the rope around his waist. Honestly, he does not know how dangerous the underworld could be. Before, he did not believe you when you told him about it but now he believed you.

“I know and I don’t care, Hyungu.”, Geonhak says. “I need to find her in the underworld and bring her back to us. This rope will help us to get back from down there right?”, he asks again and Hyungu nods his head.

Geonhak took off his shoes and socks before laying beside you. The bed was cold but he had no choice and slowly taking your available hand into his and hold it tight. “Hyungu, I’m ready.”, Geonhak told him.

Hyungu nods his head. He hold the rope tight as he chant a whisper and Geonhak began to shut his eyes slowly and drift off to sleep.

Geonhak realised that she would always hold him when they were sleeping. Like she said before, no sexual activities and for some reason he felt bad. Her tiny fingers would wrapped around his, which is two or three times size of her fingers.

He had no idea when she asks him for mattress or blanket at first. When he gave her the blanket, he expect her to sleep on the bed though the bed was a little cramped with two people on it.

His bed was not an actual bed. Just a mattress layered by some wood pallets. When she spread out the blanket he gave to her on the cold floor, he freak out.

“Are you going to sleep on the floor?”, he asks.

She nods. “Yeah.”, and she paused. “You don’t expect me to sleep on the bed with you, right?”, she asks.

Geonhak cleared his throat and look away, a little awkward with her gaze. He look back at her and pat the bed, asking her to sleep on the bed. There is no way he would let her sleep on the cold floor.

“The bed is not that small. You can fit in.”, he says.

He did not ask but he knew why she wrapped her fingers around his. There is one time she interlocking her fingers with his in the campus and he quickly pulled it away. It was not because he was uncomfortable or scared of people might see it but he was rather shock to have someone interlocking their hand with his.

While she thought he was uncomfortable with it and probably does not want anyone in the campus see it. So she would just wrapped around his finger, most of the time his thumb. Even in her sleep, she would just hold any of his thumb. Like a child, holding their father’s.

It has been more than a month she live with Geonhak and sometimes, something creepy happens in his house too but most of the time, Geonhak was never home. She would always handled it alone and she never told Geonhak about it.

Things would be normal after that. Until one day, Geonhak snaps at her when she went back from her old family mansion. As soon as she step inside of the house, she was greeted by a stack of paper onto her face.

Startled, she step back and eyes the papers that was scattered on the floor. She looked up and saw furious Geonhak. Honestly, she never saw him this mad before. Sure she had seen him upset a few times but not this.

“What happen?”, she asks. She knew something bad happened but she did not know what.

“What happen?!”, Geonhak laughed, clearly felt ridiculous by her question. “I knew you were trying to screw me over ever since you approached me, buy me with your money and even move in with me in this crappy, shabby house of mine!”, he starts.

“But I never knew you would go this low by actually steal my work! My hard work that I have been working on.”, he says and he sound sad. Now she knew what happen. Before she could reply him, she saw a creepy black figure behind him and he eyes went wide.

She was about to open her mouth to explain to him and warn him but the figure has already made sure she would not say anything. Geonhak did not know what was happening around him and he have no idea at all.

The figure pulled out a few of his kitchen knives and aimed it behind Geonhak’s back. It threaten her to kill him if she starts to open her mouth.

“Yes. It’s me.”, she said out of sudden. She actually did not hear anything what he was accusing her off because her eyes were focus on the knives behind his back. She shuts her eyes in defeat and look down, not daring to look Geonhak in his eyes.

“Yes, I approached you so that I could have a good use on you. I stole your works and turn it into mine. I buy you with my money so you could trust me. Is there anything else that you want to add?”, she try to say those things without getting her emotion affected.

She cannot believe that she was actually being threaten by unrested spirit.

“You’re such a bitch.”, he grabs you and dragged you bag to the front door and shoved you out. “Get the hell out! I don’t want to see your face again.”

As said, that is how Geonhak met you and that was the last day he ever saw you.

Everything is black and Geonhak could not see a thing but he keeps walking. He knew he is in the other world but he had no idea how the underworld looks like. He was expecting like a dark forest like the one they showed in films.

“How do I get to her?”, he whispered. Hyungu had remind him before to not speak out loud or calling out her name. It could draw the spirit to him and most of them were dangerous. Then he heard Hyungu’s voice.

“Just walk until you see a light ahead.”, he says.

“Hyungu, is it okay for you to speak out loud?”, Geonhak whispers and lowkey scared to be attack by any spirit at the moment. Then he heard Hyungu chuckles.

“They can’t hear me. Only you can.”, he added. Geonhak nods his head, understood before proceed to walk until he saw a light.

“I saw the light now. Do I just get into the light?”, Geonhak asks and Hyungu responds with a yes. With that, Geonhak slowly get into the light. His eyes need some adjustment because the sudden lights were a little bit shock for his eyes.

Slowly, he opened his eyes and saw a green field. It was not a plain green field, it has some flowers around it. It is sunny but a little bit chilly in the same time. Geonhak walk around to see if you were here. As he walk, he saw a figure in a white dress sitting on a bench, near to a deep cliff.

He walks to the figure and lightly tap on her shoulder. Slowly, the figure turn around and Geonhak was beyond happy to see you right in front of his eyes, well and healthy.

“Hyungu, I found her.”

After the heated argument he had with you, he never saw you ever again. For some reason, he thought you would at least come back to take some of your stuffs that you left in his house. He asked around the department if they know you but none of them really has the slightest idea about who you were.

“That weirdo? I’d rather stay away.”

“Why would you looking for that weirdo?”

“Man, I don’t know anything about her.”

Geonhak had no idea that you never had any friends other than him. Honestly, he does not know how to feel. Was he supposed to feel bad for you or was he suppose to feel glad after what you did to him?

With that, Geonhak stops looking for you. He stops looking around and asking around. He wished to move on from whatever had happen but he seems cannot to let go anything that had happen between you and him.

He also went back to work three part time jobs to support his living. The house, the school fees and everything else. That day, he was suppose to pay his fee at the finance office but to his surprise, the administrator told him it was paid.

It can’t be… He thought. He made his way to his back, getting ready for his night shift at the club when someone called out his name. It was a man. A fine, handsome man. Geonhak gave the man a questioning look.

“Can I help you?”, Geonhak eyed him from head to toe. He has a dark silvered hair, white shirt with a black coat, black pants and black boots. This man remind him of you. He kinda resembles you a lot.

“I’m Kang Hyungu. I heard you’re looking for my sister.”, his soft voice breaks the silence. No doubt that he is your brother, because you both sounds almost the same when you talk.

“Where’s she?”, Geonhak asks, first thing when he learn that Hyungu is your brother.

“Somewhere that you can’t reach her.”, he told him. “I’m here to fulfil the promises that my sister had made with you.”, he pause. “I know about the deal.”, he added.

“What promise?”, Geonhak asks, confuse.

“Let’s go somewhere else, so we can talk.”

Currently, both of them were sitting in a cafe.

“My sister told me to wire some amount of money to your account every month. Paid your bills, your house and your school fees.”, Hyungu told him as he sip on his coffee. “Her money, not mine of course.”

“Why?”, was the only thing that Geonhak could came out with.

“Honestly, I don’t know.”, he puts down his cup on the table before looking Geonhak in the eyes. “You’re my sister’s keeper but it’s a shame that you didn’t believe her or tried to understand her, at the very least.”

“I know you might not believe in soul, spirit or whatever they call it now but they are real. I can see the dead too, like my sister but we both had it differently.”, Hyungu explain.

“You may realised she never wear anything revealing but that’s because she is sensitive. She always feels cold and never felt the warmth until she met you. She said, being with you gave her the warmth that she needs and she felt save too.”

“Back then at your house, it wasn’t her. I mean, your paper works. Apparently, being with you for such quite time making some of the spirits lingers around you too, including the dangerous ones and it happen to cause a big misunderstanding between the two of you.”

“She actually came back to your house but not physically. Her soul went there and made a deal with those unrested spirit to leave you alone and apparently had to sacrifice herself for you.”

“Where is she?”, Geonhak asks again, hoping that he would tell her where she is but he refuse.

“I can’t tell you now. We have to make sure everyone around you are safe, especially your friends. I’ll brought you to her myself when the time is right.”, he added before standing up and leaving Geonhak in the cafe wondering to himself if he should believe in what he heard but some things seems to make sense but it the same time, it does not.

“Geonhak, what are you doing here?”, you freak out when you saw him. Sad is understatement, you were devastated to see him in the underworld. “No! No, no, no! You shouldn’t be here.”, you cried, trying to reach him.

You are expecting to him to feel cold, like the dead but to your surprise he does not. He felt warm as usual. You stops crying and looked up to see his face, smiling. “You’re alive!”, you says, a bit relief.

“You can’t be here. What are you doing here? How can you be here?”, your questions were like some bullets and dragged him away from the cliff, where you were hanging out just now.

He let a chuckles before answering you. “I’m here to bring you back of course and Hyungu made me do it.”, he whispered. He never forget to not be loud in the underworld, good thing that he managed to pull himself together when he saw you.

Hyungu on the other side were face-palming himself at Geonhak’s remarks. He fucking sell me out. He thought.

“That boy.”, you groaned.

“Don’t be mad. It was my choice.”, he paused. “I came to take you back, you don’t belong here.”, he told you as he pulled you to where he came in before but you stops him and pulled away your hand.

"And so do you.", your eyes drift away, avoiding his gaze.

“I can’t leave, Geonhak. I made a deal with it.”, you look down. You do want to go back so bad but you can’t and it seems like you would be part of them in no matter of time.

You can feel that your body is getting cold and the space that you created getting dark, like no sunlight could ever go through, ever again.

“You can!”, he said.

“How? I can’t just break the deal with the dead or they will come after you and I don’t want that. It was my fault you got involved with it but I’m not going to get you involve again. Not after they tried to kill you.”, you accidentally spill it.

“Kill me? What do you mean? Who tried to kill me?”, he was surprise to know about this after a few months. You tried to look away and avoid answering his question. Then he called your name, “Please, I deserve to know since you already had me involved.”

You sighs in defeat. “The day we had argument. It’s about your paper works, the one you work hard on.”, you says.

Yes, Geonhak would never forgot that day where he last see you. “What about it?”

“Something in your paper, it’s about the research you did. It happen to be connected to one of the dead. You're not suppose to dig on them but I know that you didn't know about it. They tried to destroy it a few time but I managed to stops them.”, you pause.

“They followed me back to your house. They knew I can see them. I tried to handle by my own and then things get out of hand. T—“, Geonhak cut you off.

“Then the argument happens.”, he continued. You nods, eyes still looking away.

“That night, a few knifes were right behind you. I’m afraid that he would upset him more if I told you anything. So I had to…”, you added and both of you went silent.

Suddenly, Geonhak break the silence between you and him. He asks you to do something that you would never want to. Not because of you but because of him. “Call them. I’ll make a deal with them.”

“Geonhak, you can’t just make a deal with them. They are dangerous.”, you remind him. He gave you a look before make sigh. “I know what am I doing. Hyungu taught me before I came to you.”, he added.

“No offence, Mr. Kim but can you please stop selling me out?”, Hyungu’s voice was heard but it was only for him to hear. He kind of forgot that Hyungu could actually hear whatever he was saying. He is still conscious.

“Geonhak…”, she almost begged.

“Please, I need you to trust me on this. I finally trust you and you have to trust me on this.”, he tried to reason her and after a while she agreed.

With the energy she had left to live up the space of her own in the underworld, she used it to call on the unrested spirit that had her locked up in her own space.

A black smoke flies across the space and land in front of the both of them. Geonhak could not see it’s face, but you can. All he could see a dark smokes in a human figure, walking towards them.

“What does a human like you doing in this kind of place?”

“I came to make a deal.”, Geonhak says. It would be a lie if he say he is not scared, he is actually feel scared but at this moment, he needs to get you out from this hell.

“I should have kill you when I could if this bitch didn’t interrupt me.”, it growled. “To deal with me, you have a price to pay. Can you?”, it asks. That question however made you shivered and gave you goosebumps. It has something under its sleeve.

“I want to break her deal with you. In exchange, I'd stay in her place only after the thirty third day of the month. You can't come for me until the thirty third day of the month come.", you gasped, not even paid attention on whatever he said and the spirit accepted the deal right away.

“Deal. I’ll see you on the thirty third.”, it says before flies away.

“Geonhak! What the hell are you doing?!”, you freaked out. You tried to pull yourself from his grip and he was a lot more stronger than you are.

“Trust me and let’s get the hell out from here quickly!”

You finally woke up from your deep and long sleep however your body is still weak because of the lack of nutritions. You sleep for months of course your body did not have that much flesh.

As soon as you woke up, your brother greets you with a smile and tears. A happy tears of course. Hyungu really want to run and hug you but Geonhak have not come back from his sleeps, yet. Now he starts to freak out.

“Mr. Kim, where are you?”, Hyungu asks, he still holding the rope. He cannot let it go or Geonhak would stuck in the underworld forever.

“I need a minute. The rope is quite long than I expect it to be. Has she went back?”, Geonhak asks.

“She did.”, Hyungu answers. After exactly a minute, Geonhak came back. Conscious and alive. Quickly, he turn around and saw you were looking at him, smiling. He held your hand, not wanting to let it go.

Your once blue skin finally starts to change its color to a warmer tone. Your body is getting warmer too.

“Welcome back.”, Geonhak welcomes you home. You nods as a slight tears roll down on your cheek. Hyungu quickly went to you and gave you a very long hug. He misses you, a lot.

After a while, you turn your head to him. “Why did you do that?”, you asks, almost sobbing.

“He said he would come back on thirty third of the month, why are you so freak out?”, Hyungu asks, a little bit confuse. "I mean, yeah thirty second existed back in ninety seventy eight."

“How can I not fre— Wait. Did you just say thirty third?”, you asks again and both of them nods their head. Your body are still weak but this is too funny to not laugh on.

“I freak out for no reason”, you finally calm down and took a deep breath.

“Welcome home, sister.”

Dying @ the Borderlands AU post to be honest. (At work. 8') ) GIVE US THE BORDERLANDS ACE ATTORNEY CONTENT WE DESERVE. (Did you ever actually post that fic with the train push-off though??) ... I should look into playing that game. (Those games? Heck if I know. I like the artstyle though.)

I posted the first chapter of the fic, though at some point as I massaged out details, I did start trying to rewrite that chapter. So plot-location-wise, that’s a bit of a mess, but the general vibe of it is the same.

I think I had some other completed excerpts I never posted, and so if I get to writing up a huge big summary of the thing, which I want to do now, I can intersperse it with a few written bits. There was a thing with Ema, and then later with Kay.

(Those games, yeah, there’s three shooters and then one….idk how to describe Tales from, I own it and haven’t played it. But yeah, there’s Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands the Pre-Sequel for the shoot-em-up main entries of the series that I’ve played. I love all of them, but I love the Pre-Sequel a little less because low-grav combat made me want to die.)

To summarize the AU, or the start of it, for everyone who doesn’t remember/wasn’t here, the main cast, and what their class names would tentatively be in-game, include:

APOLLO, the Sharpshooter, a sniper with an eyepatch who never misses a shot

(The eye patch is significant, I’ll come back to Apollo’s powers in another post.) He lived on Elpis for most of his life – Elpis is the moon of Pandora, which is the planet that most of the games take place on – and until the start of the story, works for the corporation Hyperion with his best friend Clay, an engineer. They’ve both come to be pretty important in Hyperion’s ranks, pretty quick – Apollo for his sniping skills is the personal bodyguard/assistant to Hyperion’s CEO, Kristoph, while Clay is one of the top engineers and most valuable people except for periodically when they’re forced to pay out the ass to run some antivirus/debug software on his brain, because Clay has a USB port in his head and sometimes he tries to download every cat video ever and gets a virus. Kristoph puts up with this, barely. (It is not the worst financial crime being committed in Hyperion’s ranks. Klavier is embezzling millions into pointless endeavors and Kristoph can’t lock him out of the system no matter what he tries. But that is, again, something to come back to later.)

Apollo and Clay start to suspect that there is a lot amiss about Hyperion and the kinds of experiments they do and what they want from Pandora, and together they start investigating into what, exactly, Kristoph is doing. In the midst of this, Clay is (apparently) killed, and Apollo not allowed to investigate anything about his death. This is the final straw, so Apollo takes what he knows, destroys what he can on the way out, and flees the Hyperion moonbase and Elpis, stowing away on a freighter shipment down to Pandora, intending to disappear into the wilds of Pandora.

CLAY, however, isn’t dead – just in a coma, with his brain wired into Hyperion’s mainframe. He hacks the ECHOnet to get into Apollo’s communicator and serves as a “voice from above” font of “advice” and “wisdom”. (He’s taking the role of, to quickly spoiler-free summarize from the games, the Guardian AI called Angel, who throughout Borderlands and 2 offers advice and points you in the direction you need to go on your quest. Clay is an infinitely shittier at his job version.) Because of some limitations hacked into his brain, he can’t tell Apollo that he’s Clay, that he’s alive, and that he’s sort of being forced into trying to manipulate Apollo and friends into doing Hyperion’s bidding, but he can be very inefficient at it and sabotage from within as best he can. Also, sometimes he accidentally sabotages, like when he’s like “I’ve made the calculations and your vehicle can definitely make this jump” and they try it and crash because he was using the gravitational constant of Elpis, which has much less gravity than Pandora.

On landing on Pandora, Apollo is waiting for one of the Hyperion trains that still runs to take him west and get as far away from this landing site as he can. There, he meets three other travelers and apparent fugitives:

ATHENA, the Berserker, who takes on robots with her fists and a sword and maybe sometimes she’ll use a shotgun;

KLAVIER, the Doppelganger, the spitting image of Hyperion’s CEO;

and TRUCY, the Siren, one of six women throughout the galaxy marked with strong magical powers and glowing tattoos that make her a target for everyone who knows the legend.

Hyperion robots stop the train and begin a search for the fugitive Apollo – the four of them take down the robots and jump off the train, and that’s where their adventures really begin.

ATHENA and TRUCY have a mind to go to the city of Sanctuary, the only free city on Pandora that isn’t corporate-owned or a bandit shithole. Trucy’s father and all her friends live in Sanctuary; Athena, too, lived there for a few years. Before that, they both lived in the city of New Haven, which was razed by Hyperion in their search for the man who screwed Kristoph out of getting his hands on a piece of the Vault Key and a Siren.

-inhales- quick more Borderlands plot context. Vaults are ancient alien caches of powerful weapons, treasure, or monsters scattered throughout the galaxy. These can only be opened by special keys, which are ancient artifacts that tend to be broken and scattered in pieces. In Borderlands, a corporation called Atlas and their military arm, the Crimson Lance, are trying to acquire all the pieces of the key scattered across Pandora to open a Vault to get the loot inside of it. You play as a Vault Hunter, who are not-quite-bandits who for whatever reason are interested in the lore of the Vault, or just kinda ended up on Pandora and fell into it accidentally. In Borderlands 2, about five years later, Hyperion is going after a different Vault, also on Pandora, also with the key in pieces, but the opening of the first Vault in the first game has done some funky stuff to the planet in the form of a mineral called Eridium. Both times, you are trying to stop the corporations from getting to the Vault, with help from some allies, such as the AI Angel and an independent resistance group, based first in New Haven, then in Sanctuary and called the Crimson Raiders, headed up by some of the player characters from the first game. In 2, the Vault Key can only be used naturally once every 100 years; otherwise, it has to be artificially charged with an Eridium-powered Siren. Thus, Hyperion needs a Siren.

phew okay back to the AU, context thus set for Trucy.

TRUCY has spent a few years traveling Pandora on her own, trying to learn more about Eridium and its connection to her Siren-powers. At this point, however, she’s had enough being on her own, and wants to go back home to Sanctuary. She knows she’s a Hyperion target, and that’s partially why she’s been out on her own. She wanted to protect her friends and family. But she’s been reasonably undetected thus far, so she thinks she’s safe. Safe enough as anyone can be on Pandora. She wasn’t born on Pandora, actually, though her mother was from here. She spent the first years of her life living with the Troupe Gramarye, a gang of notorious con-artists who traveled the galaxy scamming people and looking for Vaults. How’d she fall in with Phoenix? Maybe that’s for next time.

ATHENA was not actually born on Pandora, either. She was born with strange, non-Siren powers, probably from her mother’s exposure to weird alien elements; Metis tried to keep this secret and devise ways to help Athena, but eventually people found out, wanted to turn Athena into a lab rat, and so Metis fled to Pandora, knowing its reputation for lawlessness because one of her former coworkers, a woman named Aura, fled there after she vaporized three people for stealing and copyrighting her own personal work. Aura’s brother followed her, after stabbing the people who showed up on his door looking for Aura. Metis knows she can rely on them, and so she takes Athena and goes.

Athena just acclimated really, really well to Pandora. In the course of fighting against Hyperion, however, some time after the attack on New Haven, Metis is murdered by an unknown infiltrator. Simon and Aura agree that they can’t raise and protect Athena the way she deserves, not when they are both dead-set on avenging Metis, and so Simon takes Athena off-world and settles her down somewhere safe. She has a normal teenager-hood in a normal part of the galaxy, goes to college, gets a degree in psychology – all the while chafing at the normalcy of it all. When she’s confronted with her massive amount of college debt, she says her final “fuck it” and abandons her responsibilities to run home to Pandora and find Simon again.

She hilariously has zero secrets that she’s keeping from the others.

And KLAVIER was born and lived most of his life on Elpis – not that he says it, or much of anything, about himself to the others. He has obvious affiliation with Hyperion, but since Hyperion’s ‘bots are out to kill him as much as they are Athena and Trucy, they both accept that he’s on their side. Apollo isn’t quite so sure, because Apollo knew Kristoph and knows that Klavier looks just like him, thus knowing that Klavier was probably someone very important in Hyperion.

Except Apollo can’t say that, because Kristoph (unlike Handsome Jack, Hyperion’s egomaniacal CEO in the games) doesn’t plaster his face everywhere and make himself well-known, so the fact that Apollo recognizes Klavier’s face to be shocked at him means that Apollo was also someone important in Hyperion to know Kristoph and so Apollo and Klavier are just the Spider-Man Pointing meme at each other over their Hyperion involvement. Except Hyperion has bounties on both their heads, so they’re like, okay, okay, cool, I guess I will tolerate you.

After some horrible misadventures involving Pandoran wildlife, which Klavier and Apollo are not prepared for even though Elpis also has horrible wildlife, they reach Sanctuary. Sanctuary is home to the resistance against Hyperion, called the Crimson Raiders, made up of random people and some of the remains of Atlas Corporation’s Crimson Lance who were hunting the Vault years earlier. There in Sanctuary, they catch up with former colonel EDGEWORTH formerly of the Lance, and former commandant VON KARMA also formerly of the Lance. They were once sent to Pandora to acquire the key and quash the Vault Hunters who were chasing it; however, a certain persistent Vault Hunter and his Vault-researcher friends won them over to his side, and so they turned on Atlas and the Lance. The two of them run Sanctuary and the Raiders, Von Karma handling a little more of the military matters, and Edgeworth with the mayoral matters, but mostly, they’re an apparently seamless team.

Aaaand….I think that’s enough for one post. I could probably do, like, four more posts? One for the rest of the people of Sanctuary, one for Apollo and Klavier’s various fucked-up backstory secrets, one for Gramarye Bullshit, and one mapping out the very loose plot points moving forward.

But I’ve spent like all day writing this, so I guess I’ll do this in installments if I’m reminded.

Relative Charisma & the Incel

WED SEP 30 2020

So the first of three debates between Trump and Biden happened yesterday, and it was... as CNN’s Jake Tapper so aptly put it, “A hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck.”

I didn’t see it, because I was at work, but I’ve heard enough sound bytes, and seen enough post debate coverage to know that... history will remember this one and play back those clips for centuries to come... of Trump, behaving like an angry, wounded animal.

For some context, despite my last entry, in which the indy left media (TYT mostly) was crying that Biden was losing the election, based on two stand alone polls that had Trump up a tick in two states... Biden’s lead in those and all other states is actually holding, or slightly growing.

I should disclose that my information is coming from an independent YouTube polls analyst whom I’ve come to trust over the past few years. There are many such channels on YouTube, but this guy eventually won me over, because he’s thorough, transparent, always has receipts, and pretty good at calling trends, while keeping expectations grounded in reality.

In my experience, news outlets... be they mainstream media, or indy news sources, only present polling data that they can sensationalize.

Right wing media just deny reality and convince their viewers all news of Trump being behind is fake. But Mainstream media always wants you to think it’s a dead heat... because that gets ratings. Meanwhile, the indy left news wants you to think Biden is losing, to fuel more activism and more participation.

And none of this is the subject of the entry at hand, but... it’s important to get this out of the way as we move into October, when the polling data is really going to be indicative of what happens on Election Day.

I vetted a lot of different YouTube analyst channels and settled on the one I have, because... I trust this guy.

So... when I sit here an say that Biden has a significant lead in all critical states, has several paths to 270, is ahead in national polls, etc... I’m getting that from a trusted source. It’s not just me being blindly optomistic based on some things I happened to pick up here and there.

Okay...

Back to context for Trump behaving like a wounded animal in yesterday’s debate...

On the one hand, yes, Biden is still way ahead, and looking like he’ll be the clear winner... which I’m sure Trump doesn’t like. But on the other hand, Trump was also deeply humiliated this past Sunday when The New York Times published a bunch of his tax returns... going up to 2017 and 2018, when he was, of course, President.

And the story reveals that he’s drowning in debt, and has been for quite a long time... with most of it being owed to mysterious unknown parties... which is a security concern. It also exposed how little taxes he’s paid... which may or may not be tax evasion, technically, but is not a great look for a populist President.

Quick sidebar here... Presidential tax returns are never normally news, because all Presidential candidates since Nixon have willingly published theirs upon declaring their candidacy... until Trump.

So it’s not like he’s being singled out by the New York Times for exposure of his private business.

On the other hand, the tax returns weren’t exactly a bomb shell. More like a fizzling sparkler. No personal check from Putin, with, destroy democracy, written on the memo line.

Yeah, he pays almost no taxes, but... we already knew that’s par for the course for all billionaires. It’s kinda the reason the progressive left exists.

But in terms of context for Trump being a wounded animal... it’s the drowning in debt thing he never wanted to go public. For Trump... it’s an unspeakable humiliation, like getting pantsed in public, only to reveal that you like to wear Wonder Woman Underoos or something.

It’s a massive blow to the image he’s created for himself, and defended so dearly... of being a legitimate billionaire, who used his shrewd instincts, and financial brilliance to amass deep pockets of untouchable wealth... self proliferating, tax free, multi-generational wealth.

Instead, he’s just an idiot, billions of dollars in debt, forcing the US government to pay millions to his Mara Lago resort, for hundreds of golf outings (around 200 to date) and he’s still in the red... at Mara Lago! Forget his other debts and failing ventures!

A quote from Iron Man 2 is very apt, here...

Ivan Vanko : [laughs] If you could make God bleed, people would cease to believe in Him. There will be blood in the water, the sharks will come. All I have to do is sit back and watch as the world consumes you.

That was Ivan’s rationale for attacking Tony Stark at the racetrack. It’s also been interpreted as a foreshadowing of the scene in Infinity War, several years later, where Tony Manages to punch Thanos hard enough to scratch his cheek and get a single drop of blood out of the mad titan.

Here in 2020 reality, the New York Times did get that single drop of blood... on Sunday.

And going into his first debate with Biden... who has been stubbornly leading in the polls all summer long... Trump was so furious, he could not keep his composure.

And this, at long last, brings us to the matter of relative charisma.

I’ve talked about it several times in the past, saying that, if you want one simple rule of thumb for predicting the next president... it’s that, whoever has the most relative charisma will win the election.

Relative, in this model, meaning... relative to the opponent.

A great example of this would be George HW Bush (Bush1) who had way more charisma, relative to stodgy, stuffy, Michael Dukakis, in 1988. But four years later, the same George HW Bush, looked himself, quite lacking in charisma compared to his new opponent, Bill Clinton.

It’s happened in every election of modern times. Carter had more relative Charisma than Ford, but far far less relative charisma than Reagan... and on and on back to FDR.

It was also, obviously true that in the match up between Trump and Hillary Clinton... Trump had all the relative charisma. PT Barnum levels of charisma!.. as the happy, quippy, rude, outsider... to her... boring gramma persona saying, “Pokemon Go to the polls!”

And early this year, during the primaries, when Bernie Sanders was still in the running, I said several times that Trump would, “mop the floor,” with Biden in a debate.

But... that was before Covid19... and 200,000 dead. Before record unemployment and record evictions. Before the Black Lives Matter movement caught fire in the streets, facing off with fascist police with tear gas and batons all summer. Before Biden sailed through all the insanity, staying ahead of Trump in the polls, to get the nomination.

And it was before Trump, in recent months, sent thugs to kidnap protesters in Portland, threatening all other democratic cities with the same, began knee-capping the post office, was exposed for calling our soldiers suckers and losers, refused to accept the election results if he wasn’t the winner, refused to commit to a peaceful transition of power unless we, get rid of the ballots, and... was exosed as swimming in debt.

So in Tuesday night’s debate... while he did try his level best to mop the floor with Biden... Trump came off as... well, an incel*.

We all, sadly know how incel’s debate, having suffered them like a bed bug infestation in every comment section on the internet for the past ten years, and in last night’s debate... Trump was, incel personified!

Moderator Chris Wallace, of Fox News, even gave Trump the chance to back away from the event horizon of the black hole that is at the heart of incel culture, by asking him to simply denounce white supremacy.

And not only could Trump not denounce white supremacy... after dancing around the quesion, he wound up saying that a group of white supremecist incels known as the Proud Boys, should, “stand back, but stand by!”

In other words... he’s not only banking everything on the incel vote... he’s calling on the incels to join Beta Force, and be ready... to intimidate voters in person on election night... and to create mayhem when he loses.

Please stand by, incels... but you understand, this is not a paid gig, right? I’m kinda tight on money right now, so you’ll need to be fighting for me out of the prematurely ejaculating spite in your sexually inadequate hearts!

The point here, is that the question of relative charisma between Joe Biden and Donald Trump has finally been answered.

Incel vibe, is not charisma. It’s the opposite of charisma. It’s a combination of wounded spite, bitter frothing at the mouth, and indefensible stupidity... all the things that make normal people want to puke.

So, while Biden may not have much in the charisma department... he does have a few charming attributes above the base line for a decent human being capable of empathy and logic.

And in a match up with the Trump of October 2020... that means, Biden has all the relative charisma... and he now has it on lock down.

We can talk soon about Trump’s incel chances of stealing the election by incel force, and the true threat that his army of incels present to our democracy, but for tonight... Trump is an incel... and incels have zero charisma.

I’m going to bed.

*Incel is a portmanteau for, Involuntarily Celibate.

It refers to straight, cis boys or men, most often white, from 15 to 35 who, despite deeply craving to engage in sexual activity with counterparts of the opposite sex, fail to attain it. Such males believe they are entitled to sex with the partner of their choice, and are thus baffled and aggrivated by their inability to obtain it consentually.

Incels are characterized by their extremely toxic interactions, which go beyond the mysogyny one might expect, to encompass all of society. For, in their mindset, it is not simply women who are to blame for their lack of sex, it is the entire framework of society... and that framework is also to blame for every other wish they perceive as being unfairly denied to them.

Incels resort to harassment, often thinly veiled as debate or argument, in order to torment those (most) who will not recognize their entitlement, and dream of reforming the societal order, such that their bullying rules the day... often waxing nostalgic for imagined times in the past when men such as themselves ruled without question.

They are thus, quite attracted to all forms of fascism, including, but not limited to white supremacy.

In the modern day, incels are widely regarded as a scourge, and considered by nobody outside their circle to have anything resembling charisma.

Something in your way (Part 1)-Qwerty series

A/N: So, I have come to see a gradual increase in Qwerty love. Awesome. Glad y’all are coming around to my little emo Redmayne haha. He’s amazing, and I hope I do him justice. This series won’t be as intense as the others, considering the life Qwerty leads. But, for those of you who read my series, I’m sure you’re aware of how little I think will come of it then bam…100 chapters later lol Also, I decided to make Lucky officially his in this. Fall in California brought a gentle breeze, one Qwerty enjoyed against the backdrop of palm trees and the burning sun. He longed for a cooler environment, but his lifestyle and career never allowed for a move across country. It was a downer on his spirit, but he found solace in the hobbies he took up. Even if they never truly went anywhere as a passion, it was an escape from the reality of his current job.

“My pleasure, Mrs. Ramirez. No, please don’t worry about-“ His lips curved into a sheepish smile, even if the woman on the other line couldn’t see him. Qwerty could never grow comfortable with the endless compliments the families of the deceased gave him. In the back of his mind he yearned to be more pushy with accepting payments, but whenever he attempted a call to them…he couldn’t bring himself to tug their pockets for anymore. They were grieving enough as it is, putting financial strain on them due to his own wasn’t an option. “Of course…yeah, thank you. You have a good day too, bye. Take care.”

Qwerty laid the phone down, hand immediately coming up to run through his dark strands. He was beyond stressed, head hanging limply in his palms as he contemplated the next step in his plan to remain in business. It was a wonder his father even managed to stay afloat, knowing he was far worse than him when it came to collecting payment from clients. But, this was his inheritance, and nothing he said or did would ever seem to change that. “What are we gonna do, Lucky?” He huffed, banging his forehead on the desk with a sullen demeanor. Qwerty turned his head, cheek laying flush against the surface as he smiled down at his dog. Lucky just wagged his tail, so unaware of the problems that plagued Qwerty’s mind. Maybe that was the beauty of dogs, they simply saw the positivity of life and tried their hardest to bring their owners into the same world. Unfortunately, no amount of happy barks and tail wags could erase the debt he was in.

“Don’t look at me like that, boy…” He couldn’t help but smile though, those deep brown eyes of his dog boring into his human soul like he should be counting the blessings he currently had. In some odd sense, maybe Lucky was somehow right…even if he was the one coming to that conclusion himself. “Well, we should get going, huh?” Qwerty eyed the clock on the wall, sighing when he realized just how late, or early depending on who you are, it was. The night just swept by, his usual free time at home now spent calling past clients with an outstanding balance. He supposed he could take the full weekend off now, the financial worries of work could wait till Monday.

“How’s about a coffee?”

Lucky barked excitedly, bouncing up and running towards the funeral home doors. Qwerty grinned at the dog, happy to have one good thing going for him in his life. Even if he found Lucky under odd circumstances. But, he was grateful anyway, the vet bills were paid and his dog was fine from the rather nasty bump of his hearse. He was still apologetic about that fact.

“Alright, settle down.” Qwerty playfully pushed Lucky away from the door, sifting through his pocket for the keys and locking up for the coming weekend. He stood back for a moment, eyeing the double doors of his business with an expression of dread. He could practically feel its walls slipping from his fingertips, but he tried his best to shake that negativity off until he found himself sitting in the bank office begging for another loan.

“Come on, Lucky.” Qwerty led them down the street, hands casually pressed into his pockets. He was headed for his usual caffeine fix, a nice cafe that attracted the down and out with cheap prices. A rare find in California.

“Oh, excuse me.” He blurted out, bumping shoulders with a few businessmen and woman as they began their own trek to work in the early hours. He wasn’t sure if he envied them or not, but right now he was looking forward to a long nap.

He quickly entered the coffee shop, taking his place in line and thanking the gods for the small amount of people waiting inside. He couldn’t leave Lucky out their too long, and for once the stars were aligned for him.

“Let me guess,” A spirited voice rose up next to him, but he was positive it wasn’t aimed at him. He rarely attracted attention, especially of the female variety. “Black, with just sugar?” And there it was again, so close and chipper for such an hour. He was curious, as any human would be, but conversation wasn’t his forte and just knowing someone was willing to talk to him was nerve wracking.

“Is that a no? Damn, I thought I was good at reading people…”

He could ignore it no longer, and he turned slightly, blinking over at a woman who was standing closer than most strangers would. You had a burgundy beanie on, and a light coat that was fitting for fall time. Even in Southern California. He immediately noticed how pretty you were, that smile of yours so bright it could probably change the worse of days. But, he still couldn’t fathom why you chose him to single out in this cafe.

“I-“ He stuttered in response, looking behind him and around to make sure no one else was in your line of sight. “Um, sorry I-are you talking to me?”

You eyed him up and down, smile growing wider when you observed a young man standing awkwardly in line. His button up was too big for him, tie a little too long and hair a dark mop of strands on his freckled head. He seemed so out of place within himself it was somehow endearing. His confused, and hopeful stare was also a cherry on top of the uncomfortable demeanor he let off. “Well, trying to anyway…” You joked, giggling when he blushed and smiled. He looked away for a moment, eyes downcast as he responded to your original question.

“Sorry, I thought-um, yeah black and sugar.” Qwerty was all too occupied with the sudden rush of adrenaline in him. A sign his anxieties were going to rev up and crash into him like a wave. He could feel his asthma begin to start, but now wasn’t exactly the time to be taking a puff of albuterol.

“Oh! So I was right. Nice, still got it.” You watched him laugh, but he was fidgeting oddly with his hand, a curious action you wanted to inquire about. But, it wasn’t really your business to be prying into. “Sorry, I guess this is totally off, huh? It’s just-“ You glanced around the cafe, taking interest in some individuals but not wanting to interfere with their work or studies. “I work with animals all day, not exactly the best conversationalists. It’s kinda nice to just talk to another person.”

Qwerty understood that feeling well, working with the dead didn’t bring much socialization into his life. And any girl he did somehow catch the eye of instantly took issue with his line of work and just disappeared on him. Romance never got a chance to gain footing unfortunately.

“No, it’s fine.” He smiled, trying to maintain some normalcy now. He wasn’t sure where to steer the conversation, and that tingling in his fingers was only growing. “I’m Qwerty…”

“Oh, nice to meet you then.” You held your hand out, taking his and shaking it wildly. He was a funny individual, unlike most of the loud, obnoxious citizens who lived around here. It was a breath of fresh air in this smog filled city. “I’m y/n.” You pointed to yourself, finally reaching the cashier and ordering up a latte and Qwerty’s drink as well. He didn’t even have time to protest by the time you paid, a smug grin on your features as you handed him his order.

“Let me pay you back.” He offered, already going for his wallet only for you to reach for his hand.

“Don’t worry about it. Consider it a pay it forward kinda thing.” It didn’t take much convincing, because he simply stared at you in awe. He laughed then, smiling as he looked down and nodded.

“Alright. Thank you.”

“Sure thing, Qwerty.” You walked out with him, letting out a surprised squeak when a dog suddenly jumped on you.

“Lucky! Down!” Qwerty immediately grabbed his collar, trying to pry him away but finding you only giggling at the encounter.

“No worries. He’s so cute. I may have given him a treat or two before walking in…hope that’s fine. I carry too many dog treats in my pockets for him not to take notice.”

“Yeah, I don’t mind. He likes you.”

“Well, food usually makes anyone like you.” You patted Lucky gently on the head, keeping your latte high up so he wouldn’t toss it out of your hand. “Listen,” you set his dog’s paws back down. “I’m a groomer, nothing really special, but I have my own truck. So, um, if you ever want a cheap bath and brush for him…just call me.”

He could tell what was coming next, the inevitable good bye and see you around. He wasn’t ready for that yet, sometimes life had a funny way of connecting you with someone. Perhaps it was presumptuous of him, but he felt that with you. Qwerty could see the wave you offered from behind you, your retreating back moving further and further away down the sidewalk. Letting things slip from his grasp was a regular habit of his, but for once he couldn’t let that happen. His business, his dreams, all of that could be chased away and now he realized how little he’d actually accomplished with his life. And while he was never great at this, that push inside him finally shoved hard enough.

Maybe a little too hard…

“Wait!”

You turned around, watching amusedly as Qwerty came rushing down to you. Lucky was hot on his heels, barking as if this was a game. It was a cute sight, and you waited eagerly until he was barreling towards you and breathing madly.

“I-“ Between gasps of air and his constant numbness in one leg, he could feel faint coming for him. That only made him fight it more. “I didn’t get your num-“

He paused in his words, face growing beet red and eyes almost rolling back. You knew what he meant to ask, and you went for your pen in your purse only to look back up to see him smashing towards the concrete. His cheek hit it rather hard, and you suddenly realized you had no way to help him up. Dead weight was a real thing, and even with his lean figure it wasn’t going to be easy. Not to mention his dog.

“Qwerty?”

The incessant beeping next to him stirred his sleep, a groan emitting from his dry lips as his eyes drifted open. Nothing but flashing lights and a white ceiling greeted him, and the occasional sound of footsteps and coughing. For a second, it was as if heaven had descended in a flash of bright lights, only not as beautiful as people thought it’d be. That vision didn’t last long though, and as soon as he heard that familiar chuckle he was brought back to the reality of his life. A hospital room.

“On the list of weird ways to meet someone, this takes the cake.”

Qwerty diverted his gaze to the sound of your voice, his vision finally clearing enough to make out those beautiful features of yours. You were sitting on the arm of a nearby chair, looking out the window of the hospital. He was struck by the idea of you still sticking around, especially after such a clumsy display. Most, and most had, would leave him behind or simply call for help and do nothing more. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time this happened. In a fit of loneliness, he attempted speed dating once, only to clam up and faint on another unsuspecting woman. Needless to say, nothing ever came of that event.

“Why didn’t you leave?” A foolish question, but it was the first that popped into his mind.

“What kind of person leaves someone laying on a city sidewalk?” You chuckled, taking a sip of your latte as he officially came to. He sat up in bed, stretching his neck and wincing at the soreness of his muscles. “I wouldn’t move much, you hit pretty hard.” He had a nasty bruise on his cheek, now stitched up and tended to. The doctor told you it wasn’t serious, and even though he was a stranger, you were happy for him.

“You don’t have to stay, I’ll be alright.” He didn’t want to inconvenience you further, he was already internally cursing himself for his lame attempt at finally asking someone out. Even if he was planning to use your business as a means to do so.

“That wouldn’t be nice, besides,” you pointed to the front desk just outside his assigned room. “I told them I was your wife so they’d let me stay longer. It’s passed visiting hours apparently. Can’t make myself look bad, now can I?”

Qwerty was taken back by that, but he laughed all the same. You were definitely a different breed of person. “Sorry for that. It doesn’t happen all the time, I have asthma and it acts up…” Not the coolest thing to reveal to someone, but you didn’t seem phased by him fainting so what else could possibly push you away.

“Yeah, that was…weird.” You smiled through your small chuckle, tapping mindlessly at the table next to him. “Don’t worry about Lucky by the way. I dropped him off at my apartment before coming here. I don’t live far so whenever you’re good to go, we can swing by.”

“Thank you. I don’t-I don’t know what to say…”

“Don’t mention it. Oh, and-“ You pulled a bag of chips from behind you, trying to make the confused man ease up a bit. “Here.” Most would find this situation embarrassing, or even odd, but you had come from a long line of strange events growing up in Los Angeles. Nothing surprised you anymore, so seeing someone faint in front of you was possibly the most tame thing to witness in the city.

“Oh, you don’t have to-“ Qwerty looked towards your hands, noting the offering with a look of uncertainty. He was already surprised you stuck around, much less actually cared enough to keep his nutrition up.

“Don’t worry about it. It’s not like they broke the bank.” You laughed at his quizzical expression, rolling your eyes before falling into the seat next to his hospital bed. “Vending machine.” With a quick gesture towards the one in the hall, Qwerty finally let out a chuckle, thanking you for the food and eagerly taking them from your hands. “No prob, consider it a get well soon gift.”

Basking in Candlelight-Jamilton-Part 4-Quatre

Master Post

Warnings: Cussing. War flashback. ------- Hamilton was sitting at his table, nervously shifting papers around. He was here way too early. The room was empty, the silence was starting to bear down on him. He didn't know if he could take it much longer. He closed his eyes tight, trying to ignore it.

Everything was quiet. Too quiet. He and his regiment artillery waited. And waited. He knew they were coming, but he'd never see them until they were plunging a bayonet into his stomach. And then that would be it. But it couldn't be. That couldn't be all he did in life. He survived a hurricane only to die in some small skirmish no one gave a fuck about. His name would be lost forever.

He shook his head, trying to clear it, and refocused. The British were climbing the hill, in the middle of the night, through a dense forest, in hopes to get an ambush. Lovely plan, but Hamilton knew it was coming. He just didn't know exactly when. His men shifted nervously around him.

"Steady men," he whispered.

A twig snapped. Someone fired.

"Hold fire!" Hamilton commanded. His men paid no mind. Guns were going off rapidly. Men in redcoats charged from the forest, only to be shot down by a volley of bullets, skewered on a bayonet, or impaled on their fortifications. It was a gruesome sight. But Hamilton didn't have time to be sick. He had to focus on not dying. Not that anyone would miss him. No knew he existed. No one cared.

A cannon discharged.

A door banged open, causing Hamilton to jump. He shook his head vigorously, trying to clear away the memories of war and bloodshed. He was fine. He didn't die. Everything was fine.

He ran through the familiar lines in his head. My name is Alexander Hamilton. My wife is Eliza Hamilton. I have a son. His name is Phillip Hamilton. I am Secretary Treasury. My rival is Secretary Jefferson. I am in a cabinet meeting.

He took a couple deep breaths before he was fine again. He glanced around. The room was a lot more full. Almost everyone was there. Everyone except Thomas Jefferson, naturally. That guy was always late.

Washington brought the room into order.

He started it off with one of the other cabinet members. The man went through his presentation and sat back down. Just then, Jefferson burst through the door.

"Sorry, I'm late President Washington. My deepest apologies." He said, gasping for air. Did he run the whole way?

"Take a seat Secretary Jefferson," Washington replied nonchalantly. "Now, Secretary Hamilton's plan to assume state's debts and establish a national bank. Secretary Jefferson, you have the floor, Sir."

"Life-" Jefferson began.

"Hang on!" Hamilton interrupted, "Why does he get to say anything? This is not the Secretary of State's area! It's the Treasury's, my area! Secretary Jefferson shouldn't be touching this with a ten-foot pole!"

"Yes, but I would like his opinion on the matter," Washington soothed. "Secretary Jefferson, please continue."

Jefferson shot Hamilton a dirty look. "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We fought for these ideals, we shouldn't settle for less. These are wise words, enterprising men quote 'em, don't act surprised you guys, cuz' I wrote 'em!"

Hamilton rolled his eyes.

"Now, Hamilton forgets, his plan would have the government assume state's debts. Now place your bets as to who that benefits, the very seat of government where Hamilton sits." Hamilton leaped out of his seat, "Not true!"

"Oh, if the shoe fits, wear it! If New York's in debt, why should Virginia bear it? Ah, our debts are paid, I'm afraid, don't tax the south cuz' we got it made in the shade."

Cocky bastard.

"In Virginia, we plant seeds in the ground, we create, you just want to move our money around." Jefferson picked up the thick stack of papers Hamilton has spent weeks compiling and held them in the air for everyone to see. "This plan is an outrageous demand and it's too many damn pages for any man to understand!" He tossed them over his shoulder, causing them to scatter around the room.

Hamilton growled as he stooped to hunt them down and pick them up.

"Stand with me, in the land of the free. Pray to God we never see Hamilton's candidacy. Look, when Britain taxed our tea, we got frisky. Imagine what gonna happen when you try to tax our whiskey." Thomas smirked at Hamilton, who sneered.

"Thank you, Secretary Jefferson. Secretary Hamilton, your response."

Hamilton stood, "Thomas," he began, straightening out his papers on the table, "that was a real nice declaration. Welcome to the present, we're running a real nation." He slammed the papers down. "Would you like to join us? Or stay mellow doing whatever the hell it is you do in Monticello? If we assume the debts, the union gets a new line of credit, a financial diuretic, how do you not get it?" Hamilton was in Jefferson's face. "If we're aggressive and competitive, the nation gets a boost. You'd rather give it a sedative?"

Jefferson went to say something, but Hamilton pressed on. "A civics lesson from a slaver, hey neighbor! Your debts are paid because you don't pay for labor! 'We plant seeds in the south, we create!'" Hamilton mocked. "Yeah, keep ranting, we know who's really doing the planting."

Jefferson cut in before Hamilton could continue. "You think I don't know who the south rides on? You think I don't want slavery to be gone? Well, you're wrong! I fight against it harder than you! Published a couple essays and then you were through! Was it too much for a money man to handle? Afraid you'll get caught up in some sort of scandal? I thought you liked to hear yourself talk? Why don't you take a walk and find someone else to mock. Or least come back with some real facts so that your attacks have some tact, instead of grasping for straws. Or perhaps you should go back to law!"

Hamilton sputtered for a second, "And another thing Mister Age of Enlightenment," he continued, completely ignoring Jefferson's words, "Don't lecture me about the war, you didn't fight in it! You think I'm frightened of you man? We almost died in the trench! While you were off getting high with the French!"

Jefferson was in a rage, his next words flew from his mouth. "You talk as if I wasn't there! Who do you think got you from fucked to fair? Without me supporting you every way I could, sending money and guns, food and wood. I did everything I could! I've been in the Congress since the beginning, not joining when we might start winning! I went from governor, to traitor, to father of the declaration. While you were out delivering proclamations, making a mess, everything I had to redress. Who stayed behind til the very last second, saving documents from enemy hands, making sure all the other bands of men got out alive and grand. If Cornwallis got me that day, we wouldn't even be here for you to say, such slandering things. You'd be dead instead of wearing so many God-awful rings!"

Hamilton went to retaliate, but Washington cut them both off, practically having to get between and shove them away from each other.

Jefferson watched as George dragged Hamilton away to have a word in private. Madison was next to him, complaining about something Hamilton said.

Jefferson turned to him, "Sorry James, I've got to go." And with that, Jefferson walked off, leaving Madison staring after him. -----

That was a nice sized chapter, yes?how'd you like that one? I'm rather proud of my added come backs. Sorry, I'm rambling. What'd you think? How was it? And requests on how to continue. I may or may not grant them, who knows? This is supposed to be a sizable fic, so the Jamilton happenings are kinda slow. I apologize for that.

Colin G Platt On Peer-to-Peer – Bits on Blocks

Last week I went out with for a beer and pizza with Colin G Platt of Blockchain Insider fame after we did a podcast interview about my book The Basics of Bitcoins and Blockchains at the 11FS office in Devonshire Square in London. Quite appropriately we settled down at the The Bell, a pub in east London and sometime home of the Ethereum London meetups, and talked about how peer-to-peer cryptocurrency payments are.

Here’s a summary of our conversation. Obviously it is heavily edited and we’re not as witty or eloquent as this in real life (well I’m not anyway).

Colin: So… I read your post. Bitcoin transactions aren’t peer-to-peer eh? I beg to differ. I think they kinda are.

Antony: Well you see, I’m not talking about the network architecture; the nodes themselves are peers and share data with each other without a central coordinator. That’s definitely peer-to-peer.

Colin: I’m not talking about the nodes. We agree on that bit. I’m talking about the transactions.

Antony: Ok so let’s talk about transactions – the tokens themselves. What is a token? In the physical world when I hand you a fiver from the Bank of England, that’s a peer-to-peer transaction. That goes from my hand to your hand.

Colin: Quite, and there is no one who can censor that.

Antony: We’ll leave censorship resistance for another time, but let’s focus on peer-to-peer for now. But that’s not what happens with Bitcoin or Ethereum or any of those cloud based accounting systems.

Colin: Yes, I think I know this bit from your blog post.

Antony: What happens with those is I create an instruction in my wallet then send it to 10,000 bookkeepers to validate it. They forward it to the 10 or so miners who write it to a block, and then the 10,000 bookkeepers store it in their ledgers. Every bookkeeper debits my address and credits your address-

Colin: Wince emoji-

Antony: and that’s not peer-to-peer at all! You, as the recipient, weren’t involved in that process at all. You didn’t even need to exist! How can that be peer-to-peer?

Colin: What was it for?

Antony: What was what for?

Colin: Why did you pay me lots of Bitcoins?

Antony: It doesn’t matter. I paid you Bitcoins for, I dunno, shilling my book?

Colin: So the transaction was done between you and me, peer-to-peer. The business, the deal-

Antony: Yes, but that’s not the payment-

Colin: So let me introduce you to the three parts of *moving* money: (1) The transaction (2) The payment message (3) The settlement.

Antony: Go on… And keep it simple with examples please.

Colin: Ok, you’re at a restaurant and finish your meal. You’ve created an obligation to pay-

Antony: I like the word obligation. We have that in Corda, in Roger’s tokenisation kit for developers.

Colin: Shut up about Corda for one minute, would you?! You’ve created an obligation to pay. That’s the transaction – the business that sets up the debt. Is that peer-to-peer?

Antony: Yes. Me and the restaurant.

Colin: Is it peer-to-peer irrespective of how the restaurant lets you pay?

Antony: Yes.

Colin: Even if you pay in Bitcoins.

Antony: Eye roll emoji. YES. That’s got nothing to do with the payment, that’s the business transaction.

Colin: Ok great, so we have the transaction, payment, and settlement… The transaction is peer-to-peer. Let’s now think about the payment. How would you like to pay, sir?

Antony: Everyone in London seems to tap their cards now. It’s nuts. Think of the personal data they’re giving away with each tap. Think of the personal privacy implications! Then Visa fails for a while like it did a few months ago and everyone doesn’t know how to pay. That’s why I like cash. No bank is going to monetise my data while-

Colin: Focus, Antony.

Antony: Ok the payment – I guess it’s physical cash, debit card, credit card, bitcoins, whatever.

Colin: And when is the payment done?

Antony: Well it’s obvious isn’t it. It’s when the cash goes into their till, or when their card machine says “Approved” or after 6 blocks on the blockchain-

Colin: Or 5.

Antony: Or 1.

Colin: Or uncomfirmed.

Both: Hahaha yeah whatever.

Colin: So that’s the payment. But is it settled?

Antony: Well with physical cash, the payment and the settlement is the same. With a debit card where the money is in the restaurant’s bank account instantly, it’s also settled, or at least within a few seconds. Credit card I guess settles a few days later or whatever based on how good the restaurant was negotiating with their bank. Bitcoin in theory never really settles so it’s a bit of a hot potato, but in practice 6 confirmations should be ok, probably shorter for a coffee and longer for a house or a lambo.

Colin: So you could define settlement as “When the recipient can re-spend it“.

Antony: I guess so… Like I remember when you deposited a cheque and your bank account would update your balance and show you that you had it coming, but it would only be available to take out of a cash machine a few days later. I guess it has settled when your bank lets you take it out of the machine.

Colin: Finally, we’re there. We’ve talked about the transaction, the payment, and the settlement.

Antony: Yes, that was good. I haven’t really thought about it like that before. What about a cheque in the post? I hate cheques.

Colin: I hate cheques too. I guess in that case the payment isn’t a point in time, it’s more the full process from writing the cheque, telling me you’ve written it, putting it in the post, me receiving it, and me walking down to the bank and depositing it. That’s the payment. The settlement is when my account is credited and I can spend the money.

Antony: Ok fine. There are so many issues with cheques but let’s move on. So what?

Colin: Which bit of the transaction, payment, and settlement is not peer-to-peer in Bitcoin?

Antony: The transaction, as you define it, is peer-to-peer. I guess, the way you define it, it always is. I mean, all deals are done bilaterally. When do you ever *not* do a deal directly bilaterally?

Colin: I thought you worked in financial services. Trading on exchange, in a central limit order book? Clearing? Novations? Give-ups?

Antony: Oh yeah, of course, when you trade on an exchange you do a deal with someone anonymous and then pay yet another party, the clearer.

Colin: Or in crypto-

Antony: Yeah well in crypto the exchange is also the clearer because people trust that the guys running the exchanges won’t run off with the money…

Both: Hahaha when will they learn? / I know right?

Antony: So, the transaction that creates the obligation to pay is bilateral, but the Bitcoin payment – that’s not peer-to-peer. We talked about the payment as the handing over of cash from me to you or the tapping of a debit or credit card. In Bitcoin I guess the payment is, hmm. What is it?

Colin: It’s when you create and sign the Bitcoin tx and you publish it to the network and when the recipient see it has been sent to the network. An unconfirmed transaction – in the mempools but not yet in a block.

Antony: Yes, but whose mempool?

Colin: I suppose it’s the one that the recipient is looking at. So it’s a bit vague, and depends on their level of sophistication.

Antony: And when it has been mined in a block that has been accepted by the node that the recipient is looking at, I guess that’s the settlement? The settlement is defined by the recipient… depending on how many blocks they want to wait.

Colin: Exactly.

Antony: So Bitcoin’s settlement isn’t just probabilistic, it’s probabilistic AND defined by the recipient. Mind. Blown.

Antony: Ok where were we? Oh, the settlement. Which we defined in Bitcoin as the movement of a block from the miner to the node that the recipient is watching,

Colin: Yes, well, one block or 6 or whatever. Antony, tell me, is the movement of blocks peer-to-peer?

Antony: Yes of course, we covered that. It’s a peer-to-peer network with no central server.

Colin: So the business transaction is peer-to-peer, the payment is not because you push it to the network, and the settlement is peer-to-peer. So “Bitcoin is not peer-to-peer” is nonsense.

Antony: Well the settlement isn’t peer-to-peer – it’s not me to you. It’s peer-to-peer between the miner and the node being watched by the wallet. But, that’s not what I was trying to get at. I was trying to say that nothing moves between the sender of a bitcoin and the recipient, so it’s not a peer-to-peer token like physical cash. In fact Corda is the most tokenny blockchain because in Corda the data that represents the item of value, the money, the asset, whatever, physically moves from my hard drive to your hard drive. So in that respect it’s more like a token, unlike the public blockchains which are cloud bookkeeping services.

Colin: Stop shilling Corda solutions. I have to do enough of that on the show. Now, back to your earlier comment I wince emoji’d at – you said that the miners and nodes “essentially debit and credit bitcoin accounts in the cloud“.

Antony: Yes, in the “tokens vs account balances” debate, Bitcoin and Ethereum are more like account balances (ie addresses) being debited and credited by loads of computers almost simultaneously instead of by, say one single bank HSBC or wallet like Paypal or Uber wallets or whatever. They are not tokens!

Colin: But it’s not a debit and credit.

Antony: Yes it is! Minus one bitcoin against my address, plus one bitcoin against your address. Debit, credit. Number go down, number go up.

In 2005, as part of our divorce agreement, my ex and I decided to keep the same auto insurance but under separate policies. We had been with this company for years. My policy was on auto pay meaning that the payments were taken directly from my account. He walked in to pay his. About 6 months after the divorce, I was pulled over for a routine traffic stop and was told I was driving an uninsured vehicle. Without insurance, my registration was also invalid. Both tickets totaled 1K. My car was taken into impound. I checked and found the officer was correct. On good terms with my ex, I told him what happened. He said for the past 6 months, each time he went in to make a payment, the girl HIS was already paid. Realizing what had happened. They were applying my payments to his automobile. I was furious. I notified the agent who initially did not want to accept blame, but since the payments were automatic and my account number was on each payment they took, they were responsible. The error was compounded by the fact that the cancellation notice went to HIS address (how dumb was that!) So I had no way of knowing that I was cancelled. I was without a car for 2 weeks and lost my job. After much haggling and many sleepless nights of wondering what to do without a job or a car, the insurance company finally admitted blame, paid the impound fees of $1,250.00. The agent also said they would handle the 2 tickets totaling 1K. FAST FORWARD TO 2010 in my state, the county did a scofflaw sweep and I was summoned to court with over 5 thousand other delinquent drivers to address unpaid tickets. The order was come to court by April 30th or be arrested. Realizing this had to be a mistake, but fearful of the law, I stood in line for over 5 hours in blazing heat, then sat in court another 5 hours waiting for my day in court. I was immediately threatened with arrest because the 2 tickets were not paid. Up to that moment, I had no idea the insurance company had not paid the 2 tickets. This time, not only was my insurance and registration cancelled, my license was suspended due to the age of the infraction (5 years). In front of the judge, I called the agents' office only to be told by the secretary that they had no intention to pay the ticket. Paying to get the car out of impound was enough. When the judge heard this she was shocked and let me off with a promise to pay in 5 days. She made me promise not to drive. With no way to get home but drive, I took a chance, and was pulled over. The officer informed me that due to the vast number of outstanding cases, tags bearing our county name would be targeted for a while (talk about a police state!). I showed him my documents from the court and headed home. This is a nightmare. Would I have a case if I filed suit against my insurance company for failing in their fiduciary responsibility to a 16 year client in good standing? By the way this company is one of the largest in the country.""

I am currently working a temporary job away from home in another state not my permanent residence (I am living there for the term of the employment).
