Which authors and books do you recommend for those starting studies in Japanese topics? I know Faure and I already have his books. Is Mark Teeuwen a reliable author? Thanks in advance.
Teeuwen isn't just reliable, he is arguably the single best author to start with when it comes to history of religion(s) - and secularism too, for that matter - in Japan. His focus is somewhat more narrow than Faure's - as you'll quickly notice after looking through his works, he writes on Ise a lot of the time - but I'd still recommend reading some of his books and articles even if that doesn't interest you. That's because he talks a lot about current trends in scholarship, necessary changes in methodology, etc. and it will help you with picking other sources and evaluating what you already know in new light.
Since you're already familiar with Faure I won't say much about him, but I also can't recommend him enough. He's not as focused on specific topics as Teeuwen, and I think he's sort of prone to rambling every now and then, but he is still one of the best in the field imo. Gods of Medieval Japan is in all due likeness going to be an invaluable resource for decades to come.
Assuming you're only looking for sources in English, some other authors I would recommend are, in no particular order, Haruko Wakabayashi, Nobumi Iyanaga, Fabio Rambelli, Sujung Kim, Noriko Reider and Hiroo Sato.

Girl, different performers have different ways of performing the choreo. If it was the same you'd be bitching there isn't any variation.
I assume this is about this post?
it's not 'different performers have different ways of performing the choreo' that's my problem, it's that they hired an entirely new choreographer for this production, and he changed the steps in every single song in the musical. Kim Faure is a skilled dancer, there's not much about her physical performance or execution of the moves I take issue with. The choreo she does in that comparison isn't some 'personal interpretation' of hers, it's the choreo the broadway revival and following US Tour 6 have always used: you can watch an entirely different performer dance the same steps in US Tour 6 boots.
I'll happily admit that pretty much all of the changes in that video I posted are small, and mostly not noteworthy. The only change I have any *real* problem with is the short bit where Demeter smacks a hand on the inside of her thigh, because Bomba mirrors that choreo later on in the song and that seems to have at least some meaning to it. (Or at the very least isn't coincidental)
In this production (the Broadway Revival), Bomba does do this move, but not Demeter, so that parallel is gone. I feel like that's a notable downgrade. Otherwise, Demeter moving her arms differently when singing 'Scotland Yard' or whatever isn't the end of the world or anything.
That being said though, I'm not gonna hold my tongue about the changes made in these two productions out of niceness because they were made without the permission (or desire) of Gillian Lynne, the original choreographer. She'd been working as Cat's primary choreographer for literal decades, and ALW decided to replace her with a different guy for the Broadway Revival, and he (Andy Blankenbuehler) booted her out of the room and screwed with her life's work just bc it wasn't 'modern' enough or whatever.
If these were changes made that I could look at and go 'okay that adds some interesting context' or 'oh thats a cool way of doing that' then I'd only have a partial problem with them. As a matter of fact I've talked about how I love the Macavity changes from this same production(s). As much as it was wrong that any of these changes were made by butting Lynne out of her own work, I think what they did with Macavity is genuinely an interesting and fresh take on the character. I don't think any of these tiny little modifications to Demeter's choreo (that worked perfectly fine in the first place) do anything 'interesting' or 'fresh', though.
I'll admit that what I'm doing here is certainly 'bitching' in every sense of the word, but it's not 'different performers have different ways of performing the choreo' that gets me. I actually like when performers put their own little spin on moves according to their characters. This and this come to mind in particular.
It's fine to like the changes, it's fine like the Broadway Revival, and it's fine to like when Cats plays around with its choreo. It's Not fine to try and tell me that I would Ever complain about lack of variation in Cats choreo, because I have watched about [checks excel sheet] 24 different productions of Cats, (many of which all have about the same choreo), (some of which I've watched multiple times), and I've yet to have any problems with lack of variation. I have the brain and personality of a particularly unpleasant golden retriever, anon. Andrew Lloyd Webber keeps throwing that same tennis ball, I'm gonna keep chasing it.
#i get ppl in this fandom are super attached to 98- as a matter of fact when i made that comparison i didnt want to use 98#bc i didnt want to give the impression 'its different from 98 therefore its bad'#but like i said in the tags 98 matched it better- i still had to cut a few frames from the 98 clip out bc they didnt line up perfectly#but my problem with the changes arent that they have the audacity to be different-- its that they stomped all over-#-gillian lynne's life work for *nothing*#its especially annoying bc if you watch documentaries where lynne talks about her work#there are little details she deliberately put in that choreo that *mean* things#and they just changed it. for the lulz.#cats fan on main#jelliclerants

what would you trade the pain for? — TIMELINE
what would you trade the pain for? is supposed to mainly take place about 6 years before the events of Disco Elysium, when Dora packs her things and leaves Revachol and Harry behind, before he and Jean became partners in the RCM, and when he and Vincent officially meet.
the canon is extensive and might be chopped up into multiple fics rather than just under the what would you trade the pain for? (WYTPF ????) umbrella. im not really sure yet!
subject to change etc etc canon events = italicized fics written = purple

YEAR '40 - The economic boom of the thirties comes to an end following a financial collapse.
YEAR '41 - 10 years ago > Vincent Travart's mother Maria Travart is killed in an unspecified accident. He is begrudgingly adopted by his uncle, Kenrick Faure, as a favor to his deceased mother. > The ficlet "Mother's Name" takes place about here.
YEAR '42 - 9 years ago > Joakim Virtaenen officially joins the RCM at 18 years old despite already serving a few years off and on as a civilian informant on local trafficking.
YEAR '43 - 8 years ago > Vincent joins the RCM at 18 years old at his uncle's insistence to prove himself man enough. Kenrick pays for his training. > Joakim is assigned to be Vincent's partner in the RCM.
YEAR '45 - 6 years ago > Joakim & Vincent find themselves in the right place and time to rescue a politician by the name of Antonin Arcelis, nearly abducted by who appear to be paid thugs. Antonin convinces Vincent to fudge his report, promising him a powerful favor. > Antonin, Vincent, & Joakim enter a dubious relationship. > Joakim breaks up with Antonin and reports his doubts in Vincent directly to Ptolemaios Pryce in an effort to gain his superiors' favor. The pair are barred from promotion and watched with a more careful eye. > Mikael Wyrzyk joins the RCM at 15 years old. > Dora Ingerlund breaks off her engagement with Harry du Bois. > The fic "what would you trade the pain for?" starts here. > Vincent encounters Harry for the first time, who is desperately looking for a way to distract himself. > Vincent breaks up with Antonin and gets into a situationship with Harry soon after.
YEAR '46 - '47 (estimate) - 5-4 years ago > Antonin disappears under mysterious circumstances, rumored to have been abducted. > Joakim is shot and killed during an investigation. Vincent believes his death to be related to Antonin's disappearance, but there is no hard evidence. > Despite the RCM's efforts, Antonin's case (and by extension, Joakim's case) goes cold.
YEAR '48 - 3 years ago > Vincent transfers to C Wing's "Major Crimes Unit" to work alongside Harry. Mikael, inspired, chooses to follow. > Mikael is assigned to be Vincent's partner in the RCM.
YEAR '49 - 2 years ago > Jean Vicquemare is assigned to be Harry's partner in the RCM (estimate). > A fire breaks out, damaging multiple old wooden houses on the edge of the Valley of Dogs. Kenrick is killed in the blaze, destroying the home and forcing Vincent to move into an apartment with very few belongings.
YEAR '51 - current > Harry, Jean, & Judit Minot begin an investigation in Martinaise after the death of a mercenary. Harry is left to complete the investigation and meet up with the Precicnt 57 contact, Kim Kitsuragi, alone. > Harry loses his memory. The game takes place within about a week. > Harry returns to working at Precinct 41. Kim requests his transfer from Precinct 57 to work alongside Harry. > Le Retour is predicted to happen in May by Shivers.
??? (at some point after Martinaise. unknown territory) > Vincent & Mikael are promoted to Sergeants, with Mack Torson & Chester McLaine transferring to another wing. > The case of Antonin's disappearance is reopened when new evidence is stumbled upon. Vincent & Mikael investigate, with the help of Harry & Kim. > Vincent is shot and nearly killed by a hired mercenary, losing an eye in the process. He is dismissed from the RCM due to the apparent disability and long recovery time. Harry & Kim resign from the RCM in turn. > Harry, Kim, & Vincent found their own investigative business.

demeter for the ask game
Oh my god one of my favs thank you!!!
Why I like them
Her backstory and lore, and the fact Glamour Cat is one of my favorite songs in the show.
Why I don’t
nothing about her bothers me that much that it would make me dislike her.
Favorite episode (scene if movie)
My favorite scene is of course the start of Macavity when she’s describing him and dancing
Favorite season/movie
I like Kim Faure Demeter a lot so the 2016 revival
Favorite line
“He’s outwardly respectable” or “Until the Jellicle moon appears”
Favorite outfit
I like it a normal amount…
OTP
Alonzo, purely because I feel she has more agency in her staging with him If that makes sense. Ever since this one post pointed something out I can’t ship her alternate popular ships that much.
Brotp
I’m gonna be different and say Mungojerrie, because it’s platonic opposites attract, from what I’ve seen they have a very fun dynamic that I would love to see played up more if possible.
Head Canon
She goes on early morning walks, it’s normally when the junkyard is the most quiet and she can see the sun just as it’s about to rise. She never did get to go outside much when she was with Macavity nonetheless during daytime so just getting to pace around the outdoors really brings her peace and joy.
Unpopular opinion
I think they can go a little further with her? Like more paranoid and unhinged. Like I think it would be interesting if some of the jellicles doubted when she screams “Macavity” since it’s been false alarms for most of the night. I think it’ll make Macavity’s eventual reveal and the toll it takes on Demeter more impactful.
A wish
probably just to live the rest of her life in peace, she’s been through so much already that living a “boring” life would be a privilege in and of itself
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen
Macavity successfully capturing herself or Jemima is probably her nightmare scenario. But I think the worst thing that could happen to her did happen to her already when Macavity tried to kidnap her and ended up hurting the community and cats she loves most.
5 6 words to best describe them
Her descriptions already do that so: Skittish, Cautious, Paranoid, Nervous, Sensual, Secretive
My nickname for them
I don’t have one- but I love her
Thank you for the ask ❤️
#Doing dem and Mac back to back is definitely something#But again thank you so much! I love talking about her#Demeter

Psst, want some Tugger being soft with Victoria and Demeter?
C'mere... come and look at Victoria running straight over to him when it's time to build the train, instead of running to get her piston thing... and then Demeter running to join them...
She pet his ears! He and Deme do a nose-rub! and on another night, look: they play with his knees!
But now to business. Deme and Vic grab their piston thing and they build a train. (Munk, u ok? you look like I badly photoshopped you in from a photo. Your wheel's stopped, buddy...)
No, no, Munk's come back to life: it's time to FALL APART! Victoria carefully stashes the piston, then falls over dramatically. As does Munkustrap. The wheel has defeated him.
But hold on, what exactly did Victoria do with the piston...?
Why, she gave the end to Tugger to hold on to, of course! And then he handed it back to the girls for safe stowage.
Broadway revival, on three different nights in 2016: July 22 (gifs 3&5), October 30 (gif 4), and December 22 (the first and last two gifs).
Georgina Pazcoguin is Victoria in all cases. Kim Fauré is Demeter in July and December, and Madison Mitchell is Demeter in October. Tyler Hanes is Tugger in July and October, and Harris Milgrim is Tugger in December.
