Yeah. I think that [Bombalurina] has empathy for Grizabella, and she feels for Griz because she was almost Griz. I think she was, like, one step away from sort of turning to the dark side and one, you know, line of cocaine away or, like, whatever. You know? She kind of almost turned to there. So I think she, wants to protect the younger cats from her and not as much in a judgmental way, but just in a you know, "you really don't wanna go down that road".

For this entry to @bombawife‘s OC week, I wanted to offer up my versions of the nameless henchqueen quartet from the 2019 movie--all from wealthy human families, dazzled by Macavity and the Mouser’s Palace, now adapting to their new lives on the streets of his criminal empire.

Character Design Evolution of Cats: Bombalurina

1981: A punk rock girl who seems to be having a good time at the concert.

1982: Punk rock girl with and added gothic vibe and maybe some cat ears. Clothing is fashionably ripped. If Hot Topic was actually cool.

1998: More red than the last two. Her white chest no longer feels like a ripped bodice, but it sometimes is skintight enough to feel like a lot of skin is being shown. She also looks like she might fight you.

2016: The red is even redder and we’ve added a bra of black fuzz. The fanservice just gets wilder. She’s having a great time, though. Much less likely to fight you.

2019: Once again, Hooper goes for realism with a red color that looks more like a real ginger cat instead of literally red. That is not as fun. It also makes the fact that she’s wearing heels seem really stupid. Why is this cat in heels? Also, the glittery moon thing is the same color that she is, making her stand out from her surroundings even less. This is no fun.

do you have a favorite bomba moment

I do not have one definitive favourite Bombalurina moment, so I will give a specific few that I like:

When Bombalurina interrupts the middle of the Jellice Ball with her own dance and the music and lighting changes to match. Always a fun moment across all productions.

In CATS (1998), I love Rosemarie Ford's excitement in Bustopher Jones. She is also great in Macavity.

As a counterpoint, the 2016 Broadway Revival, Bomba's chiding Jenny a bit for her excitement to see Bustopher Jones is fun.

Christine Cornish Smith screaming "WIDE AWAKE!" when singing Macavity in the July 2016 Broadway Revival bootleg is always a highlight.

Bomba protecting Demeter from Macavity and swatting at him a bit in Moscow 2005 is a great moment, because it shows her Protector side that I think is missed by most people.

I do also enjoy the rearranged Macavity in CATS (2019). I know Taylor Swift is not everyone's container of catnip, but I thinking she does a great job singing and acting in the movie. Plus, Beautiful Ghosts which she wrote for the movie is a fantastic song.
