Chapter 1: A contract?

Mira Magica

It was a pretty average day at Mitakihara Middle School. The school had been recently rebuilt after an "accident" in the city. Mira, a 14-year-old girl, was waiting at the iron gate with her best friend Kiki, who was holding her lavender parasol as usual.

Mira pov:

I was twiddling my thumbs, waiting for Raya.  Raya was late again. She is often late, but maybe she got in an accident this time. She could've got hurt, perhaps even killed I thought about all the what ifs.

I looked over to my side, noticing Kiki with a smile. 

'Let me guess, you're nervous for Raya again. Thinking she got into some accident or even got herself killed," Kiki said with a comforting smile.

"Listen, I know you're known, at school, for having anxiety, but girl, you don't always have to worry. Besides, you've known both me and Raya since kindergarten. Just try to think of the positive." Kiki said with a calm smile; she was right. 

She right. This lavender-haired girl and Raya have always been my best friends. They've always comforted and helped me through the worst, but then what ifs-... 

"MIRA! You're going back into your head again," Kiki said. "Sorry about that. You know I just get stuck sometimes" Before I could say anything else, Kiki and I looked at the front of the gate, hearing shouting in the distance. A green-haired girl was riding her bike towards us...

SHE WAS HEADING STRAIGHT TOWARD US !? Oh wait, it's Raya.

"Hiya girls, sorry I'm late, but I found this cool little shortcut with stairs, and I had to take it," Raya said with a cocky smile. "You took stairs on a bike?!?" I shouted at her. Was she really that dumb? She could've got herself killed or hurt. "Mira, I'm fine."

 "I feel dandy. You should've seen the cool tricks I did when I came here," Raya smiled, trying to comfort me. I am still questioning how we became besties. We're complete opposites, but maybe it is because she has supported me my entire life.

"Raya, you can't blame her for being worried. You can be reckless," Kiki said. "Not in a bad way, but I think you need to calm down a bit" I looked at Kiki. She was also close despite being from a wealthy family; she was calm and collected.  Sometimes, she would invite Raya and me. Over for dinner at her house, 

"Hey, I'm not that reckless. I only had to go to the hospital a couple of times!" I giggled at Raya's claim.

"Well, how about we just head to class for now? "Kiki,  look at me smiling. "Besides, we have a big test today. You guys studied, right?"

'Oh, right, a test. I hate tests," I sighed. "Hey, relax. I fail my tests like 40% of the time." Raya looked at me confidently. I'm still questioning how she's passing through school. I admit that I have weird friends, but I have no regrets. 

I have these people as friends even though they're quite different from me. They supported me from day one. Before I could continue processing stuff in my head. Raya grabbed my hand as we ran through the gates.

Timeskip

Our teacher was talking about literature and poems again  I would try to focus, but lately I've been more concerned about the dreams I've been having but I haven't told anyone yet. 

Every time I fall asleep, I find myself in front of a mirror, and then these black figures stare at me with white eyes. They also have pigtails. I can't see much of them, but they always stare at me in the mirror. Copying me makes it seem like we are the same person.

It's been messing with my sleep lately and not helping me with my worries. Speaking of sleep, my teacher isn't looking, so maybe I can doze off, but then I would get a bad grade.

Raya and Kiki had to leave class for some reason. I don't know why, though; it makes me worry for them, but then again, my brain has been on a lot. Maybe I could splash some water on my eyes. I raised my hand, hoping the teacher would notice.

 "Mr. Kyōshi, am I allowed to go to the bathroom?" My teacher looked at me and gave me a thumbs-up. I guess that means I am good to go. I stood up from my seat and walked out of the classroom. I still wonder whose idea it was to make the school out of glass. 

I opened the bathroom door and headed towards the sink. I looked at the mirror, and then I turned the sink on. Im going sticking with cold water. I rinse my hands and then put some water in my eyes. 

Nobody likes you

Yeah, maybe nobody does 

You're just somebody that they can dispose of. Easily.

Why do I want to start banging my head against the sink? I'm useless because I'm nothing. I tried to close my eyes for a second, but when I opened them up, I immediately fell to the ground. "OK, I'm no longer in the bathroom, am I?" I blinked twice, trying to rub my eyes. I don't even know where I am.

Maybe I should stay still, or perhaps look around, and why is there a giant Jack-in-the-Box in front of me? And why does it have rabbit legs and wear a ripped tophat?

Narrative pov:

Before Mira Hoshi could say anything else, the box opened up with a rabbit head in a cage coming out of it and heading towards her, ready to pound her into pieces 

At that moment, she thought she was going to die, but instead, a small round cylinder hit the rabbit's eye, making it explode, revealing a puff of smoke. The next thing she knew, Mira felt. Someone grabbed onto her and moved her out of the way.

"Got you"

When the smoke finally cleared, she noticed someone familiar holding her. It was her friend Kiki. However, she was now wearing a sparkly Purple blue dress.

"I know you're probably questioning what's going on. Raya and I have wanted to tell you this for a while. We didn't know the right time-" Before Kiki could say anything else, Mira had a surprised look. "Raya is here too!?"

Meanwhile, Raya Kurumi slams her axe multiple times into Bonifaz, the white rabbit witch. "This one is for trying to eat my best friend, and this one is for trying to kill people in this one-" Raya kept hitting the witch.

"And this one is for laying a single tooth on Mira." her axe immediately turns giant as she slams it into the rabbit, turning it into a grief seed before turning around. "Oh, hi guys."

Mira was completely confused about what was going on. Did she seriously almost get turned into a pancake? "OK, I think we might've scared Mira," Kiki sighed saying that. She was really hoping to have a calmer explanation to explain to her friend, but this is going to have to be enough for the time being.

"What just happened?"Mira was completely confused, scared, and possibly traumatized by what just happened. "Well, you see, we were planning on telling you this that we are. "Before Kiki could say anything else, Raya  interrupted, "Superheroes!"

"Actually, your magical girls, but I guess it's sort of like superheroes. "Those words came from a white cat that suddenly appeared in front of them.

"Can someone explain what is happening and why there is a white cat? And what the hell was that thing?"Mira was in panic mode right now after witnessing what had just happened. Her friends, on the other hand, were expecting this.

"Mira, calm down. We know this is a lot to handle, but we will explain it at Raya house. Besides, you'll get it sooner or later. Oh, by the way, this is Kyubey." Kiki smiled and then pointed to the white cat.

   "I think ...ok...?"

Timeskip

"OK, let me get this straight." Mira looked at her friends and then at Kyubey 

"Your species are called Incubators, which grant wishes to girls like us, and in return for these wishes, we have to become magical girls and fight off witches, and after defeating a witch, you get rewards," Mira said why, looking at them still trying to understand the situation.

"Precisely," blinked Kyubey at Mira and the others

“And they are also the reason for human suicide, murder inflicted by others and deaths in hospitals” Mira said, the sentence still in disbelief Kyubey nod his head “when were you guys going to tell me this?”Mira said, still surprised that her friends have been hiding this from her.

 "Kiki and I were planning to tell you eventually, but we didn't know when since you would most likely faint from all the information or probably wouldn't believe us" Raya simply smiled at her; why Kiki was drinking tea.

Mira calmed down a bit. This explained a lot of what had been going on lately and why they had been vanishing out of nowhere and then reappearing. "So that's all you wanted to tell me, huh? Well, at least I know you guys are OK."

Kiki and Raya looked at each other before smiling. "There was another reason we wanted to tell you this," Kiki said with a calm voice 

"Mira Hoshi, I want you to make a contract with me and become a magical girl," Kyubey said. Mira was surprised by what she just heard. You want me to make a what?!"

Rating the flags of Suzerainverse, based not on any existing vexillological principles, but purely on vibes™

Agnolia: 3/10 this flag...makes me mad. i don't know why, it's not egregiously bad or anything, but there's just something about it that just grinds my fucking gears. like, i look at it and i'm instantly filled with the need to deny their sovereignty over helji island.

Anrakan Isles: 8/10 this one is soooo pretty, i love it a lot (and it's one of the flags that won the community flag contest, a very deserved win!). the green is so lovely, and i love the pop of red, really gorgeous. good amount of detail without going overboard, very lovely.

Arcasia: 6/10 of course arcasia has its stars and stripes. i don't know, it's definitely pretty, but i feel like it's a bit too tryhard. like, ok arcasia we fucking get it. but the color scheme is nice and it's certainly pleasant to look at, so i guess i'll allow it THIS TIME...

Derdia: 3/10 look, i respect the aesthetic, but it's not for me. i don't like too much black in a flag, and i don't like text in a flag, so you can see how we're off to a bad start here, but the symbol is really pretty so i will definitely give them that. the little sword is cute too, they really said warrior culture, huh.

Free Cities: 8/10 honestly? they kind of ate with this one, not gonna lie. it's not a simple flag by any means--i'm imagining the little kids going to school in the free cities crying trying to draw their flag--, but it's just really pretty. the green and yellow color combo looks so striking here, i love it (<-- remember this bit, it will be important later), and the symbol is absolutely gorgeous.

Kyrute: 100/10 OH KYRUTE STOP IT THEY'RE ALREADY DEAD this is so cunty (sorry, KUNTY). i love this one so much, it's simple, elegant, interesting to look at, unique, they really cracked the code with it. it fits kyrute so well, too. amazing job, sweetie, no notes.

Lespia: 7/10 i don't want to admit it, but it's rather pretty, you win this time lespia. again, not a big fan of text, but it's so small it doesn't even register as. the color scheme is very pleasant, i love the red flower and the abundance of yellow, even if it does look a bit too vatican-y. but this is fake europe, so who cares!

Morella: 2.5/10 oh alma saltana my queen (sorry, comrade), i love you girl but your country's flag...it's just a lot. i know i said the green/yellow combo was nice, but this green with that yellow? and then the stripes with the very kiki stars...i don't know, it's not my fave i have to say.

Pales: 7.5/10 respectfully? they also ate with this one, yup. the symbol? okay grand duchy of graphic design, slay! i think it's very pretty, very harmonious, the colors look good together, the logo is clear and definitely gives that royal vibe without being too over the top. i like it.

Qinal: 7/10 oh they really said let's get CREATIVE with this shit, and surprisingly i kind of dig it quite a bit. the colors are so original and somehow work together very well. the form? inspired, honestly. cool symbolism too, honestly pretty good work. i don't know how i feel about the dark stripe, but it's a cool damn flag.

Rizia: 6.5/10 our beloved kingdom, and a pretty solid flag to go with it! i'd say it channels its vibes very effectively. it's not my favorite color scheme, but cmon, they really said 'we want the 6 stars of st. wruhec, we want the crown, we want the bull, we want the shield with the leaves and all that royal shit', and it looks fucking good, so i'll support them.

Rumburg: 6/10 listen, before the rumburgian spies get my ass, it's not bad, ok? it's totally fine, it works, it just scares me somehow. i look at it and immediately think 'rumburg' but i also feel an acute sense of dread. it is so ominous.

Sordland: 1000000/10 BEST FUCKING FLAG IN THE WORLD BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD A MORGNA WES CORE VECTERN SIS DA BITCHESSSSS. bias aside, this flag is SO pretty i love it so much it's so gorgeous. the maroon with the yellow? OH it's lovely. the symbol is tasteful and fits perfectly. god bless sordland i love you so much.

United Contana: 6.5/10 simple, but it gets the point across, i'd say. pretty and effective, nothing more and definitely nothing less.

Valgland: 5.5/10 it's fine, i guess? it's an odd color combo (say i, whose flag has the same color combo), but the addition of the pop of red with the star is pretty striking AND significant, so i'll definitely give them that. why do you even add text like that, guys, cmon.

Wehlen: 7/10 ugh, you hate to see a bitch you despise thriving, i do like this flag. it just looks cool, they don't deserve to have a cool flag (well, no, smolak doesn't deserve it). i will say that it's a bit too much white space, but it still looks so cool.

Yarktralis: 10/10 I LOVE THIS ONE SO MUCH TOO (another of the flag contest winners! great job!). it fits them so well and it's so visually stunning and OH i just love it a lot. gorgeous to look at, absolutely stunning.

Since I was tagged by three lovely people, I'll take the liberty to answer this interview with three characters~

Leon, Kilian and Kiki~

Were you named after anyone?

Leon: "I wouldn't know. My parents didn't mention anything when they were still alive."

Kilian: "I don't think so. The one who named me just liked the sound of it, I guess."

Kiki: "Nope, my name was picked at random."

When was the last time you cried?

Leon: "This is a very personal question, I- I would rather not answer."

Kilian: "Probably when I found my caregiver and father figure dead in our bathroom..."

Kiki: "I don't cry that often, at least not anymore. I cried a lot when I was small. So the last time was probably when I was six and I was left alone for like ten minutes."

Do you have any kids?

Leon: "No, probably never will. Who would want to raise a child with someone as unstable as me?"

Kilian: "Not at the moment, but I would love to adopt as soon as a certain someone warms up to the idea of children."

Kiki: "Not yet, but I do want some little babies. They are so cute with their chubby little cheeks."

Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Leon: "Not a lot, because I don't want to upset anyone."

Kilian: "It's not my forte, so no."

Kiki: "Only when upset, which happens rarely."

What is the first thing you notice about people?

Leon: "Nothing. I don't look at people, I don't want to be around people, I don't want people to look at me..."

Kilian: "Their smell. It's a persone's natural signature."

Kiki: "I think their height. I'm not scared of tall people, but I have this unexplained need to fight whoever is taller then me."

What is your eye color?

Leon: "Dark."

Kilian: "Yellow, like a panther."

Kiki: "Big and green."

Scary movies or happy endings?

Leon: "Happy endings, I need some happy endings in my life."

Kilian: "A good scary movie can lead to some cuddling... scary movies."

Kiki: "I love a good adrenaline rush, so I go with scary movies."

Any special talents?

Leon: "I don't have any, I'm sorry. I can draw and paint, but that's not a special talent."

Kilian: "I can turn into a panther. It's not a talent, since it's just what I am, but for others it could count as one."

Kiki: "I'm an ace in every sport. Even if I don't know the sport, I'll learn it in under a minute."

Where were you born?

Leon: "It's an old town where everybody knows everybody. Everybody knows what happened, when it happened, why it happened… I was born in my own personal hell."

Kilian: "I was born in an organization that supposedly protects creatures like me, in a city filled with creatures like me."

Kiki: "Like most of us, I was born in the organization. It's a huge building that's supposed to be our home, but it feels more like a prison."

Do you have any pets?

Leon: "I can barely take care of myself, how should I take care of an animal?"

Kilian: "I can't even if I wanted to. I'm a predator, no sane animal would approach me unless they wanted to challenge me."

Kiki: "No, but I would love a puppy. We could play together and tun around. It would be so much fun."

What sort of sports do you play?

Leon: "Sports?! Me? No, no, no. Sport is a form of punishment for someone like me. You want me to feel humiliated? Force me to play sports."

Kilian: "I don't like sports. Too many rules to follow."

Kiki: "Every sport! Are you playing football? Count me in! Volleyball? Count me in! All of them!"

How tall are you?

Leon: "avarage, I think. 5'10" "

Kilian: "I was always told that I have an intimidating height. 6'3" "

Kiki: "Why do you want to know?"

What was your favorite subject in school?

Leon: "Art. I still love it to this day. It's the only thing that calms me, the only thing that makes me happy."

Kilian: "I never went to public school. I was taught everything I know by the person who raised me. We never had "subjects," he just taught me what he thought I needed to know."

Kiki: "I know this will shock you, but I really like P.E."

What is your dream job?

Leon: "Art teacher. I want to give children the opportunity to express what they feel, to show the world who they are through drawing. I want children to be able to express their feelings on paper when they are afraid to express themselves in words."

Kilian: "I've never considered having a job because creatures like me don't usually work. We tend to stay at home and mind our own business so as not to interfere with the human world. So I don't have a dream job."

Kiki: "if I was allowed to work, I would love to be a P.E. teacher. Just running around with little humans. Teaching them how fun it can be if done correctly."

Worldbuilding: The Location

How much of the world do I need to show to support the story?

The entire story takes place in a maritime town/city on a small island that loosely resembles Sri Lanka (specifically Colombo). All the locations that the protagonist travels to will be here. My main inspirations for the town is Trolberg from Hilda, and the kingdom from Tangled for their circular layout.

I also take inspiration from the seaside town of Kiki's Delivery Service, both for its layout and urban planning. Similarly to the kingdom in Tangled, I like how some areas of the town are more mountainous, creating a sort of tiered building layout. Furthermore, I'm taking inspiration from both Kiki's Delivery Service and the real city of - for their road infrastructure, specifically their cobbled elevated roads.

Other island towns I'm Taking inspiration from include Hong Kong Island, Venice, and Trogir in Croatia. All of them seem to feature the same characteristics: cobblestoned streets, elevated streets, large ports or harbors, and tightly packed townhouse-style buildings or skyscrapers.

As mentioned earlier, I'm also taking inspiration from the biophilic principles of Hội An, Vietnam and San Francisco, USA. I'm especially interested in incorporating the rail cars from San Francisco. Again, Hamburg, Germany is where I'm taking inspiration from for creating a walkable maritime city for my character to traverse.

While researching on a comprehensive guide to worldbuilding, I came across a shortened free version of Culture Building for Creators by  Casia Schreyer, which the author had kindly put together for free use. I used this document as a guide for constructing my world.

Architecture/Civic Planning

What building materials are available based on geography? What building materials are available based on tech level (smelting quality, power tools, etc.)?

Due to it being in a tropical climate with both wet and dry seasons, the city prioritizes building materials that resist moisture, heat, and pests, such as steel, concrete, stone, tiles, and bamboo while also considering green roofing and solar protective glass for enhanced energy efficiency and comfort. Roofing is usually made of clay roof tiles as they are heat resistant, durable, and can withstand heavy rainfall. However, some houses do use 'green' roofing, which incorporates vegetation on rooftops to provide insulation, reduce heat transfer, and improve air quality.

Most houses also use ceramic tiles or hardwood for flooring. In terms of the type of wood being used, the country mainly uses natural teak wood, Mahogany wood, or bamboo as they are naturally resistant to moisture and pests (a commonality withing tropical countries).

Common natural stones that are used are granite, slate and limestone. These stones are highly durable and can withstand harsh heat and humidity conditions, whilst also having cooling properties.

These are also all materials used in Sri Lanka.

As I am taking Hong Kong island as an inspiration, just like the island, this city uses concrete, steel, glass, timbre, and stone to construct its high rise buildings.

What architectural style are you basing your society on?

The architectural style will be a mixture of Sri Lankan architecture (which includes traditional and Dutch colonial influences) as well as taking influences from contemporary Romanesque, gothic, and renaissance architecture.

How does geography and local climate affect your buildings?

A big part of the housing is creating a sense of harmony between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Many of the houses have somewhat of open concept, which allows for cross ventilation in the hot humid weather.

Because the city rests on a bay, there's of course seaside roads, piers, and a port. There's a train that runs parallel to the sea shore (similarly to Colombo).

Rural/urban divide

Due to the coastal location facilitating trade as well as access to resources, the urban part of the Island exists here. This includes high rise and mid rise buildings, developed city infrastructure, and an incorporation of biophilic principles. There's a mountainous area resting next to the coast, similar to that of Port Louis in Mauritius or Cape Town in South Africa. It's there, on the outskirts of the busier part of the city, where most of the housing is.

As you go further inland the city fades away to reveal the countryside/suburbia. Our protagonist lives in the city, where she also attends school, but her friend lived further inland. A few of the island's main exports are tea and rubber (similar to Sri Lanka). There's a lot of agricultural land that's used for rubber tree plantations between the city and the protagonist's friend's house.

The protagonist's friend lives in a slightly suburban area next to a wetland bird sanctuary. The sanctuary will somewhat resemble the Bellanwila-Attidiya bird sanctuary in Sri Lanka, which is a freshwater swamp.

Roads

Roads in the city are mainly made of tarmac or stone blocks/bricks, while roads going through plantations are generally dirt roads.

Transportation

The two main forms of public transport are rail cars (similar to San Francisco) and trains (similar to Sri Lanka). Denizens of the city usually rely on its walkability and public transport to get around, so owning a car is not as common as it is in Sri Lanka.

It situated next to the coast, and overlooks the sea. The school's architecture and style will be based off of Le Bocage International School in Mauritius, old Dutch colonial style Sri Lankan school buildings, and Shichirigahama High School in Kamakura japan.

Where does the protagonist go to get lunch?

In some sort of small roadside shop. I'd need to conduct field research to narrow down exactly what this location would look like.

Mormon Country

Today is my last day in Salt Lake City, Utah, and I don’t want to leave. The city is beautiful with its lovely mountain landscape and bright colored tulips springing from the ground. I came at a good time because the weather feels like Spring. In one direction, I see snow covering the mountain tops. In the other direction, I see hues of browns, tans, & greens in the distance. My view from my hotel room made my stay even more pleasant. This was my first time staying at a 4/5 star hotel. I’m glad to have this experience alone because I really got to enjoy the space. Sleeping in a different bed in a new place hits differently. I’m glad I took the opportunity to come out here.

The main reason I came to SLC is to attend my first Anti-Human Trafficking Conference. Since I registered for this conference I kept my mind open because I didn’t know what to expect. For a 2 day conference, the organizers (Freedom Network USA), packed in lots of workshops. When it came to selecting my workshops, I chose ones that the subject matters were little known to me and unfamiliar to the scope of work I do with Adelante. I spoke to a view people, but I mainly moved around on my own (not too much of a big deal). It seemed like the underlying theme was centered around or related to labor trafficking which was refreshing because I think the movement is hyper focused on sex trafficking and other forms of sexual exploitation. First, I regretted signing up for the Young Professionals workshop, but now, I’m glad I didn’t change my mind. I got some helpful information and good insight to how others in my field have encountered similar challenges in the work environment as me, and everyone in the room were in their 20s. However, I feel even more confused thinking about next steps related to my career. Adelante has become a job and not much as a career for me. I’m still passionate working in the anti-trafficking movement, though I wonder if I want to change landscape like doing the same work outside of the health/medical field.

Though the days were long, I was able to explore the city at the end of the day. I visited all things Mormon like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints temple and tabernacle; LSD Conference Center, the Temple’s botanical garden, and the LSD museum (more like walked passed it). I received a few compliments on my prayer sweatshirt. SLC is seen as this overly conservative religious place. Yet, I ended up at a bar called WHY KIKI and attended my first (drag) burlesque show. I enjoyed myself! It was like a mash up between the movie Burlesque and RePaul’s Drag Show. A round of applause for the women & men who performed that night I know I couldn’t go on stage display my body like that. Like the hosts said, “Every body is a Beautiful body”. I walked around some more & walked through the City Creek mall, and spent the rest of my last day exploring Utah’s Hogel Zoo. I was considering visiting the Great Salt Lake, but honestly, I didn’t want to go by myself (maybe next time…).

I have to flight out in the morning. I’m treading it because I have nothing to come home to. I’m going back to a city I’m not too fond of. I’m going back to an apartment where my bedroom is the only piece of me. I’m going back to a job that I have a complicated relationship with. I guess the good news is that after two weeks of being back, I’ll be off again. This time heading South to South Carolina. I can cross off visiting the West Coast. Next time I’ll be on this side again is to visit Adelena and/or Miranda if they are still stationed in California.
