I have reached the endgame of Super Robot Wars 30.

The Dreikreuz LGBTQ+_Community has defeated nearly all antagonist factions, including Dr. Hell's Kikaiju army[1], the mercenary Kingdom of Zilkhistan[2], the Neo Zeon remnant soldiers[3], the cosmic thralls of Triple Zero[4], the Wulgaru space fleet[5], the interstellar colonists from Pentagona[6], The Claw's cultish organization[7], the magitech forces of Zaloudek[8], the Super A.I. criminals[9], the otherworldly monsters of Cephiro[10], the Zanscare Empire and its superweapons[11], and the mysterious kaiju of Tsutsujidai[12], with their leaders either dead, defected, imprisoned, or otherwise MIA.

The crew has recruited nearly every character who could have joined the party, and there are no more opportunities to do so, i.e., I messed up recruiting a secret pilot from The Brave Police J-Decker and a secret supporter from SSSS.Gridman, but otherwise everyone else, including DLC characters, has joined.

The last antagonists remaining are the Quaestors, but to confront them will require a terrible sacrifice from crew! DUN DUN DUN!

Mechagodzilla

Released as part of Super7's new dedicated Godzilla line. So not an homage, or a reference to any previous toy, or historical artifact. A line of wholly original 5poa (5 points of articulation) figures.

The result is a mixed bag. It's a good sculpt, nothing exceptional - but solid.

You can see the sculpted details like rivets and joints, but the light colored plastic doesn't help accentuate anything.

The paint is lacking. Most of the figure is unpainted light grey plastic - so the little paint applications it does have should be razor sharp, right? I mean, they're okay. But the MG on his arm is shakey, the teeth are poorly defined, and the whole thing is cast in such a light plastic that all of the details get washed out.

The whole line is like this, honestly. Good figure, but all feeling a little flat.

Not a disappointment, but I'll probably wait for interesting colorways before revisiting.

Mazinger Z Infinity review

I really liked this one! It was a good mix of action and fanservice - both in callbacks and actual Go Nagai style fanservice that didn’t get too invasive. Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger both look awesome and seeing them doing oldschool attacks in such lush detail was a real treat. Doctor Hell felt like the real deal even if he was a bit derivative of his past incarnations.  As for the main enemy, Goragon, or Mazinger Infinity, was really cool. It could not really top the HAX of Mazinger ZERO but it’s sheer scale and presence was enough to carry the name ‘Infinity’ well. It was also neat seeing Kouji try engaging it in a more real type machine before using the regular Mazinger Z. The enemies didn’t end there. I’d argue seeing the Kikaiju’s assault was worth the price of the movie alone. Doctor Hell, Baron Ashura, and Count Brocken all had cool looking and unique machines, and it was a dream come true seeing Great Marshall Hell fight against Mazinger Z.  I must also mention I saw the dub and it was fantastic. Dan Green starting out the movie in his Yami Yugi baritone with a “THUNDER BREAK” sold me on the whole movie really. Wayne Grayson as Kouji Kabuto is a bit harder to identify but some of his grunts and screams were the same as Joey Wheeler’s. The whole cast was excellent and I’m sure there were some other 4Kids alumni in there, including Doctor Hell as Sonic X’s Doctor Eggman chewing up the scenery. The only thing that kept bothering me in the movie and it wasn’t even a bad thing was the introduction of the character Lisa. Short blue hair. Check. Defers to authority. Check.  Eats ramen. Check. Controls a larger body she’s part of. Check. We see her naked. Check. Was created as a tool. Check. A line about how she’s not a doll or machine. Check. Related to the main character kinda sorta. Check. This was the most blatant case of Rei Ayanami clone I’ve EVER seen in the entire history of Rei Ayanami clones. And it was awesome. More proof that the EVA kids hanging around the Mazinger crew is good for them.  The ONLY thing I wished for would be some wiggle room for Grendizer to exist considering the subject of alternate realities comes up in the movie as well. That said I give this a 10/10. It had a LOT of technobabble but it wasn’t bad. This is a good companion piece to Devilman Crybaby showcasing fifty years of Go Nagai’s works.

More on SRW 30 (some light spoilers).

The combining robots resolved their existential crisis, and the party gained their service along with a giant robot ninja (who sometimes transforms into a wolf), but it was a somber occasion due to the need to fight one of their former comrades.

Since then, the party (which I stuck with the default name of 'Dreikreuz', but in retrospect probably should have renamed 'LGBTQ Community', and I'll probably do just that on a 2nd playthrough) has investigated several timespace rifts and recruited a handful of characters from previous Super Robots Wars games, many of whom have their giant robots use Taoist magic for their special attacks (as one does). Mikazuki from Iron-Blooded Orphans and Ultraman from...Ultraman were also briefly spotted but then vanished.

Having filled out the party's ranks, I proceeded to Gibraltar so the party can start doing space missions and hopefully recruit some Gundam characters. The boss there seemed dangerous, but for all his braggadocio, he turned out to be a coughing baby when pitted against the party's hydrogen bomb of spirit commands that raise accuracy & evasion, support attacks, swanky new attacks for the main mecha and ship, and the occasional tactical retreat to bait him into closing the distance.

Also, I might be misinterpreting things, but I keep seeing hints that our ship captain, who has vowed to achieve world peace by unifying Earth and fighting anybody who's against that, *might* be secretly a little evil, which, I hope not, but I guess we'll beam saber that bridge when we come across it (no spoilers on what her actual deal is, please).

So, good times.

On a more serious note, I am sympathetic to folks who wish the game had just a teensy bit more structure. Like, having a choice between a couple of missions in the beginning, and then moving on to the next set once finished is one thing, but after the captain, Mitsuda, rallies the troops with her talk of uniting Earth, a whole bunch of missions open up, and you're not really given any guidance on what to do, except for the numbers denoting enemy strength in a given mission.

I think the game would have benefitted from a mandatory non-combat mission at this point, one which debriefed the player on actual strategy, like noting that there currently seem to be six major obstacles to uniting the world peacefully that must be resolved:

The resurrection of the Kikaiju Army and their new, unknown master

The suspected role of Excellent Inc. in the wave of robot crimes

The ongoing conflict with space revolutionaries like Neo Zeon and Zanscare

The emergence of kaiju and other inexplicable phenomena seemingly centered on the city of Tsutsujidai

Hostile extraterrestrials like the Wulgaru

And the increasing appearance of holes in spacetime that deposit new weapons in the world

Laying it out like that, I think, would have been beneficial for players who might otherwise be overwhelmed by all the choices before them (like, for example, prior to actually initiating missions involving the spacetime stuff, you're not really given any incentive to do them, unless say, you were already aware due to meta reasons that they're a good way to recruit more mecha pilots).

Other than that nitpick though, I am enjoying myself.
