Kawahira using one of the hell rings basically mean he’s MIST flames…. and Luce being chosen as the sky Arcobaleno means she’s sky (as well as Aria and Yuni)… so even true earthlings have flame types…. so perhaps the problems wasn’t about numbers but more of the fact that they didn’t have the required flame types to light up all the tri-ni-sette stones…..

He is some variant of agender, genderfluid, or nonbinary. His species had a different way of viewing gender to today's humans and not only is  Kawahira not comfortable identifying his gender in relation to the human gender experience and thus isn’t using human labels, it is also complicated by the fact that his biological sex doesn’t match human ideas of sex, which is closely intertwined with the gender experience. He prefers to remain unlabeled using he/she/they pronouns for convenience, adapting gender as it suits his purposes. But as the curse is lifted and he has more headspace for self reflection he is drawn towards neopronouns and is experimenting with them sometime after canon.

His preferred gender presentation leans towards masc.

His romantic/sexual orientation is another matter complicated by his species. He isn’t entirely asexual, I think he’s bi-romantic demisexual actually, but he has struggles to romantically connect to anyone because of his situation as Checker Face, so it is a frustrating affair. Having pushed these thoughts away under the guise of focusing on his duties, he isn’t sure himself where he stands on sex and romance. It will take quite a bit of soul searching and interacting with people normally to acknowledge that yes, he can bond with people on some level and develop relationships and yes, he can apparently feel attraction too. (And he is mortified when he end up getting a crush for the first time. On the most inconvenient person too)

Kawahira actually makes quite a few queer discoveries about himself after the curse is lifted because he was so busy pushing away any and all self reflection away to focus on his mission before. Because he is… well,him he's got an open mind not clouded by human prejudice and he adapts fast. He’s still begrudging about identifying by any human metric, but the “gender and sexuality fuckery committee” is so broad, individualistic, and welcoming that he eventually comes to feel at home among humans for perhaps the first time ever.

Oh absolutely. Ed, and Al to a lesser degree, reminds Kawahira so much of what once was that it makes him ache.

Kawahira has spent so long maintaining the system, kept prisoner in so many ways by this duty, but not truly connected to anything or anyone.

Humanity is so fleeting for all that the persist.

And the Skies, the Skies are all so small. Fractions of what Skies once were.

Too weak, too small, too less.

Skies whome Kawahira would destroy, would shred and unmake, if he attempted to fit even a flicker of his own flames into their harmony.

But then Kawahira finds Ed.

And oh

That is what a Sky is supposed to be.

All encompassing. Safety. Belonging.

1-Katekyo Hitman Reborn

An Au where Nana is Skull's daughter, when he had gone to join the Arcobalenos was with the promise from Kawahira that Nana would be protected as she had waken as a misty sky when her mother had died when she was pretty young.

Skull had known about the mafia before he joined the Arcobalenos as it was a mafioso who tried to force him to bond with him and killed his best friend(who was also Nana's mother, Nana was born from one drunken night but she is loved by both of her parents) but he kept distance from them so he or his daughter wouldn't be used for whatever they wanted.

Kawahira had Nana move to Namimori where many ex-mafiosos and similar went to after being betrayed or didn't wish to continue being a mafioso so the amount of people with flames there would hide hers but took Skull to visit her every week even after the curse(Skull thought that Kawahira and Checker Face were two different people and that Kawahira was unfortunately someone forced to work with Checker Face so he trusted him to take care of Nana who saw Kawahira as a uncle/grandparent figure).

During the years Nana met Iemitsu, married and had Tsuna both Kawahira and Skull were unable to visit her for some happening in the mafia world and could only communicate by letters were Nana never mentioned Iemitsu's name.

It was only after Tsuna was sealed that the two were able to visit Nana and were furious when they noticed someone sealed Tsuna and seemed to have forcefully bonded with Nana's mist flames(if the bonding was by accident from Iemitsu's part is up to the writer).

The forced bond changed Nana to the oblivious person in canon and neither could accept that the girl they, technically, raised together had become that and how Tsuna would suffer because of the seal so Kawahira actived a barrier in Namimori that didn't permit anyone to enter unless he or someone in a high position in Namimori gave them permission(every mafioso who started actually living in Namimori, not like Iemitsu did, was told about a barrier existing that was left behind by some ancestor to protect those living there and that once the barrier was actived everyone even those with no flames would feel it and know someone had hurt one of them).

It didn't take long for people to realized that it had been the Sawadas the reason behind the barrier's activation as they had been the only ones who had guests recently so slowly everyone started visiting them and helping them(those with flames were instructed to help slowly break the seal in Tsuna and try to find the elements for Nana's sky flames to break the hold her 'sky' had on her while those who didn't have them were explained about the flames and helped with whatever they could like keeping Tsuna safe from how the seal made him clumsy which would end with him hurt).

By the time Reborn was called to train Tsuna the barrier was down but the people from Namimori were still protective of Nana and Tsuna like the two were of the other residents besides Skull and Kawahira had made sure that no Arcobaleno could know that Skull was in Namimori and that he is Nana's father.

Reborn and the others won't have a easy time getting what they want from Tsuna(maybe Tsuna got his full element in Namimori? It could be ocs or in place of those from Italy it could be Kyoko, Haru, Mochida, Hana, etc?).

The ships, if Iemitsu will be forgive, if Kawahira came clean to Skull and they are looking for a way to make sure there is no new generation of Arcobalenos, etc is up to the writer.

What if Kawahira was a shinigami who stole weapons (i.e. the pacifiers) from the Soul King's Palace, lost control of them, and then implemented the Arcobaleno system to cover up his fuck-up.

What if, somehow, Yuzu got roped into flame-society shenanigans. As a sky, of course. (Look, she's a Kurosaki. She's Ichigo's little sister. Karin's twin! She's not going to be normal. She absolutely could end up running a magical crime-syndicate, commanding immense respect and adoration.)

Ichigo and the Urahara-shop gang are just on the sidelines, cheering Yuzu on.

The flame users who interact with the Urahara-shop gang don't really peg Urahara and Yoruichi as threats, because while Reborn and the Varia and such are good, they're not centuries-old onmitsukido good. Kisuke and Yoruichi know how to pretend to be harmless, and they find it really funny when people not in the know look down on them for being weak.

One day, Yuzu and the Urahara-shop gang are in a meeting with the Vongola and Arcobaleno. Kawahira drops in to be ominous and dispense a quest to Tsuna.

Kawahira takes one look at who's in the room, and tries to flee.

Kisuke is on him in a heart-beat, faster than any human in the room can track, pinning him to the floor with Benihime at his throat.

None of the flame-users know where tf the sword came from.

"Kawahira-kun!" Yoruichi exclaims, delighted. "What a surprise! We've been looking for you for so long."

A heartbeat. "Kisuke, darling," she says, and suddenly she seems very dangerous. "Take him to the maggot's nest, will you?"

Kisuke looks at her and grins.

And then Kisuke and Kawahira vanish, gone in shunpo far too fast for a non-shinigami to comprehend.

Can you imagine Reborn's reaction? The rest of the Arcobaleno? The Varia, who got a taste of Kisuke's bloodlust for like, half a second?

Man, I need this fic. Let me know when it manifests spontaneously. Surely a monkey on a typewriter will produce it soon.... aaaaannnny moment now...

Uni puts on white high-heeled boots, smiling softly and tenderly at everyone, trying to somehow break that height difference, still remaining a small child. Glances stop at her too often, running over the strange hat and tattoo under her eye, but every stranger she tries to make eye contact looks away.

She feels their fear, how their feelings scream that she is dangerous, and not who she pretends to be - and again stretches her lips into a thin smile, behind which hides a chasm of visions, more like nightmares

Good kids don't survive in the mafia.

The curse was draining her strength, greedily devouring the remnants of a broken life, barely reaching her by the hand to twenty - and Uni, quietly, so that no one would hear, thanked her ancestors for this.

As soon as she accepted the curse after her mother, the visions abruptly stopped, leaving only a picture of her death.

But now... She's free again. And the shaman's blood, lulled by human blood and the power of Trinisette, wakes up again, capturing the child's mind with inhuman wisdom.

She looks at Kawahira, silently demanding answers, and he looks back wearily.

He knows, but he cannot understand, because he has never completely pretended to be a man, only putting on masks, leaving his essence unchanged. Sepira wanted to fuse with the mask of humanity, and she almost managed to deceive her beloved humanity by passing carnival masks to each descendant.

Almost - because Uni has become free again to exchange prudence for the thinking of almost immortal beings, and is almost going crazy from inconsistency with what she has become accustomed to in her short life.

She's scared too, but no one can help her.

Either she gets out on her own, or she finally surrenders to the mercy of Sepira's echo, which remains in the mind of every Giglio Nero.
