Uni puts on white high-heeled boots, smiling softly and tenderly at everyone, trying to somehow break that height difference, still remaining a small child. Glances stop at her too often, running over the strange hat and tattoo under her eye, but every stranger she tries to make eye contact looks away.
She feels their fear, how their feelings scream that she is dangerous, and not who she pretends to be - and again stretches her lips into a thin smile, behind which hides a chasm of visions, more like nightmares
Good kids don't survive in the mafia.
The curse was draining her strength, greedily devouring the remnants of a broken life, barely reaching her by the hand to twenty - and Uni, quietly, so that no one would hear, thanked her ancestors for this.
As soon as she accepted the curse after her mother, the visions abruptly stopped, leaving only a picture of her death.
But now... She's free again. And the shaman's blood, lulled by human blood and the power of Trinisette, wakes up again, capturing the child's mind with inhuman wisdom.
She looks at Kawahira, silently demanding answers, and he looks back wearily.
He knows, but he cannot understand, because he has never completely pretended to be a man, only putting on masks, leaving his essence unchanged. Sepira wanted to fuse with the mask of humanity, and she almost managed to deceive her beloved humanity by passing carnival masks to each descendant.
Almost - because Uni has become free again to exchange prudence for the thinking of almost immortal beings, and is almost going crazy from inconsistency with what she has become accustomed to in her short life.
She's scared too, but no one can help her.
Either she gets out on her own, or she finally surrenders to the mercy of Sepira's echo, which remains in the mind of every Giglio Nero.
(Uni doesn't want to disappear again)

Headcanon:
Yuni/Uni's real name is Eunice Giglio Nero. Uni was a nickname established by Gamma, who had the wish that it meant "Unique". Aria was the one who formally adopted it, so most know her only as Uni.

Some KHR thoughts I have been having recently… You know how they always make it a point to like say how similar Yuni is to Luce (said by both Lal and Reborn during the future arc)? To the point that Luce’s prototype design was literally just Yuni?
Meanwhile Aria doesn’t seem to resemble them all that much outside of the obvious features (birthmark under the eye, same hair and eye colour). But you know who she does resemble?

Yuni mourns.
I wear your seastone in my veins (it's weighing me down) - @apiratefellinlovewithastar
[Gifs description copied from alt-text: They're of Uni | Yuni, from the anime Katekyo Hitman Reborn. A quote is written on each gif.
1: Uni stands with her back to the viewer, wearing the Giglio Nero Donna formal attire. The quote reads, "Warm isn't enough these days.".
2: Uni falls on her knees, a small ring of her flames around the pacifiers she's holding as she pours her flames in them. The quote reads, "her tattoo itches on her cheekbone, weighs on her like seastone.".
3: Uni stands in front of Lightning flames with her arms raised to either side, her face blank and her eyes empty even as the flames cut her cheek. The quote reads, "Her skin feels numb and her heart feels numb and her mind feels numb.".
4: Aria and Uni smile with their eyes closed, the gif starting with Aria before fading out for Uni to fade in instead. The quote reads, "green is starting to feel dull, like a lie.".
5: Uni closes her eyes, tear drops falling from them as she gets surrounded by darkness. The quote reads, "Yuni closes her eyes and takes a breath, thinks of everything she hasn’t seen but she has.".
6: Uni's clothes, her pacifier as well as the pacifiers from the other Arcobalenos fall on the floor, losing the shape of Uni's body wearing them. There's a close-up on the Sky pacifier. The quote reads, "Yuni is aware of her place in this world.". /End GD]
remember this? i reread the fic again and thought i could do birdie one even better <3

Let's thank @ilx-8s for this one theory
Let me summarize it for those of us who don't read the replies in posts: "Freed from the curse Yuni would outlive everyone"
And like, yeah, absolutely true!
In my case, I'll admit that I totally forgot to do that math, because if the rest of the Arcobaleno got freed from their baby curse, then Yuni obviously got rid of her short-lifespan curse! How does someone forget something like that?
Anyway, considering Yuni's ancestor is Sepira, who was the same species as Kawahira, then certainly she could have a long lifespan now (and outlive everyone).
But! I definitely think she won't.
I mean, I love angst as much as the next person, but (un)fortunately I don't think Yuni is heading in that direction.
Let's recap what we know of Sepira:
Sepira is the same specie as Kawahira/Checker Face, a True Earthling as opposed to New Earthling (humans)
From what we understand, Sepira was at least more proactive than Kawahira at trying to find a solution to the Tri-ni-sette as well as the burden it had on the Arcobaleno
Sepira was the one who decided to give the Vongola Rings to Giotto (and its hinted that this happened BEFORE the establishment of the Vongola Famiglia, so while he was still leader of his vigilante group) and keep the Mare Rings in her newly formed famiglia, the Giglio Nero
Sepira could see the future
She was Giglio Nero Prima
Let's recap what we don't know about her:
How she died
If she was an Arcobaleno
Tumblr media
While this inscription on a wall with Sepira's birthmark on it might suggest otherwise, it's unlikely that Sepira was a Sky Arcobaleno at any point in time. If she had been then Luce, her descendant, would have already been in possession of the Sky pacifier on the Fated Day.
So Sepira wasn't an Arcobaleno (someone, please, go tell the KHR wikia to change that). Then how did she die? Kawahira and Sepira are the same species, but he's alive and she's not, so what is the difference between them? How did she die in a way that wasn't considered unnatural enough for Kawahira to remark on it?
Well, I think the answer is in their way of living!
Sepira decided to live among and like a human, while Kawahira decided to live like the cryptid he is. So it makes sense that Sepira's lifespan adapted to that of a normal human being (and why Kawahira talks like she's died in a natural way, because she has!). And it would make even more sense that her descendants would be even more human if she procreated with a human. Unless they self-reproduce which explains the absence of both Aria's and Yuni's father and why Gamma had no idea Aria had a kid.
Sorry, angst, but I don't think Yuni will be going down the path of "I have a longer lifespan than all the people I know so I will watch them die one day".

Five... Five days?! She looks worried at the Mist Arcobaleno, quite honestly, Yuni was the type to constantly check up on her family be it Giglio Nero or the Arcobalenos, both were special to her. She gently placed her hand over their forehead to check for fever. Mammon-san! You should be in bed! Please, let me take care of you?

Uni had been awake in the dark for as long as she could remember. In a viscous, enveloping from all sides, not allowing her to take a step forward.
The only moments when Uni runs towards you, not afraid of anything, are Aria's voice. Tired, gently protective - and still close and dear. And under this voice, the girl runs towards him, trying to curl up under the warm side, trying not to accidentally touch the top of her head to the hot one, as if lying for several hours under the sultry Italian sun.
Uni has never seen the sun or her own mother, but it seems to her that they are the same thing. From the sun, the girl feels a soft warmth on her delicate skin, creeping with her blood through her veins, as well as from her mother's laughter, felt somewhere near her heart.
And she keeps as close as possible, trying not to miss the thin, delicate hand from her own. And with a sinking heart, thinking what will happen to her when this hand stops being so warm?
A little blind girl lives surrounded only by ambient sounds and touches. A sonorous, motherly voice, and gentle touches. The chirping of insects outside the window, living only in their allotted season, flying with a light stream of air. The familiar but distant voices of Aria's subordinates, seizing the moment to give the little lady sweets or soft toys in her hands. The quiet snorting of two Gamma foxes, caressing her palms, leaving wet marks from their noses. The barely perceptible clink of swords in Genkishi's scabbard, and the heavy feeling of steel on her knees.
Oh, how Gamma swore then, noticing such a dangerous weapon in the hands of the little "princess" of the family.
From these memories, Uni smiles easily, going over the sensations of the body over and over again. This is her calmness, her solace in the dark, quiet nights.
Blind Giglio Nero didn't like the dark. And she hated the silence that blurred in the mansion when it was dark. Uni just can't sleep, listening to any rustle, or breathing behind the walls, trying to convince that it's not her.
And that the stone already hanging around her neck doesn't ring at night. That this ringing, disturbing, ancient, does not repeat the melody of the Lullaby carved in her mind since birth.
Before Aria's death, Uni refused to fall asleep alone. When Aria couldn't keep her company, Gamma read her a fairy tale, Genkishi was reliably silent next to her, the clumsy Tozaru fussed with the sleepy Nozaru, or Nigella joked encouragingly.
After the death of her mother, the girl for the first time refused anyone's company - and only sat silently on the cold bed, stroking the stone beating under her fingers. It was like a second heart stolen from her mother by a curse.
Uni opens her eyes, feeling the dryness constricting her blind pupils, and slowly inhales the cool air.
If a butterfly dreams that she is the Arcobaleno of the sky, then who is Yuni?
How many times does she dream that Giglio Nero is cursed again? She doesn't know.
And only closes her eyes again, falling into nightmares.
To wake up again with her heart clenching with resentment and admiration at the same time, realizing how close fear had crept to her throat. Again.
She was left without a mother's hand, which she was ready to trust unconditionally, accepting the family curse from gentle hands as meekly as her own flaw. And she knew with a sense of doom that she was only condemning her Family to a slow decline. The blind, even in the civilian world, became easy targets - for dangers, for other people's barbs.
Uni, who grew up in warmth and safety, was not a stupid child - and she knew perfectly well that she had become only a new burden for the Chosen seven of Trinisette. This made her heart ache - and her head spin more, which only made the girl lose herself more in space, squeezing into a ball on the bed from resentment.
The huge space shining underfoot was replaced more than once or twice - and only the quiet, barely understandable voice of the system (so similar to the voice of the Ray) helped her understand what was happening.
The blue space above is the boundless Sky. Shiny, wet under her bare feet is the eternal Ocean.
Shades of blue merge into one, forcing Uni to recoil, trying to cover his vision with his hands... and nothing works out.
Had her eyesight been taken away just for the sake of visions? And she answers - yes, it was. And the girl closes her eyes, flipping through the flashing pictures in front of her eyes before taking the first step forward.
If Uni's foresight was bought by her helplessness, so be it. And the newly-made Arcobaleno of the Sky gets out of bed, remembering the entire sequence of actions that she managed to see in bright flashes.
Even if she becomes a hostage to her own visions, it will give her only one chance to correct herself. A chance paid for by her future.
And Giglio Nero accepts this deal with a conscience. Anyway, she would never be given another chance.
The chance that Uni will escape death at 15 is zero.
The chance that she will kill Byakuran Jesso before being elected Mare's ring is even less.
But the chance that she will deceive him increases with each passing day. And she will take full advantage of it.
Uni is not sorry that the Mare boy will consider her a broken doll. After all, only this will save her world.
But not her.

Buon Giorno, Reborn (KHR Flufftober)
Fandom: Katekyo Hitman Reborn Characters: Reborn, Luce, Aria, Yuni Word Count: 1,005 Prompt: Porch Swing Event Host: @flufftober
It's said that a well crafted swing can last twenty years or more if taken care of. Cedar was often a perfect choice as it was strong, durable and resistant to rotting and decay. A perfect stain to it and sturdy enough chains and Reborn hung it in the corner of the villa in Italy that he would leave behind as he ventured out once more in the body he held, for the last time.
"Luce, come swing with me." He called out to the Sky. The hitman had no one else to show off his craftsmanship to and honestly if there was anyone he wanted to share this project with it was her. She'd loved and enveloped all and Reborn was always thankful for her kindness. However he hadn't known this would be the last time he'd have his adult body and the only time he'd be able to share the swing with Luce.
A hot coffee and swinging together in the morning had become their routine. A warm smile from Luce and a "Buongiorno, Luce" from Reborn started their day the same way every day, it had become their favorite way to spend time together. However, neither of them realized how precious that time spent together would be. Years down the line they'd become cursed.
The sky wouldn't make it as their lifespan was drastically shortened and those morning cups of coffee on the swing would be a thing of the past, Reborn thought. They'd lost Luce, his heart was crushed. Now he sat every morning, swinging alone. Until a familiar appearance made her way into his life. The Sun Arcobaleno had outlasted his Sky.
Another generation came and went as Reborn found himself on that swing once again, his body no longer its typical adult size, a curse they all had to get used to. And there it was once again, that soft smile, similar to the last and just as comforting. However he was greeting someone else this time. "Buongiorno, Aria." He called to Luce's daughter, the current Arcobaleno boss and carrier of the Sky pacifier. Two generations of Arcobaleno bosses were gone, and Reborn still lived, and the swing was still in good condition however his heart wasn't.
Reborn doubted he'd ever love again, no matter how many generations passed, no matter if his curse was lifted or not, his heart had belonged to Luce and nothing would change that. He'd go about his duty as the Sun Arcobaleno and would leave for Japan soon to train Tsuna to become the Tenth Vongola Boss. And even during his time overseas, the swing would still stand.
The Italian villa would be overgrown with moss and weeds by the next time he returned, and once again years down the line the Arcobaleno would suffer another loss. Aria was gone now too. The pacifier birthed the next generation Giglio Nero boss and holder of the Sky Pacifier, a very young girl who strikingly resembled her late mother and her late grandmother as well as once again, the Sun would outlast the Sky. The swing has once again outlasted another generation.
It scared Reborn to think how fast the Sky would perish as their curse caused them to pass on sooner than the others. How many more generations would he outlast? Would he meet Luce's granddaughter before his own time was up? Or would Reborn meet his fate before that day came? Yuni was born from the pacifier as Aria died, would Yuni make it this time herself? Could the curse be lifted in time to at least spare her? Years once again passed and Reborn found himself on that old familiar porch swing until one day he was given a mission.
"Head to Japan and train the Tenth Vongola Boss candidate, Sawada Tsunayoshi." Reborn did as he was told. He packed up and headed to Japan, the swing sat in that villa surviving rain, snow, sleet and storms patiently awaiting his return. The training had been hellish, but he was finally proud of his student. Tsuna had overcome a lot and Reborn had completed his task of making him into a Mafia Boss. When he returned to that villa, years had passed.
He'd expected overgrowth on the house, he'd expected the porch to have fallen in. He didn't expect the greeting or the striking resemblance the girl had to the last two Arcobaleno bosses he shared this swing with before. Three generations he outlived, and three generations the swing survived. The Giglio Nero and Arcobaleno once again watched a transition as the Sky position was passed to Yuni and once again Reborn found himself taking a seat on that porch swing next to the Arcobaleno boss and watching the sun rise with a cup of coffee in front of him and a juice for her.
The eighth and ninth bosses had come and gone from this world. Now Reborn cherished the time he would spend with the Tenth. And once again as another generation transitioned to the next, that porch swing stood the test of time and so did the Sun Arcobaleno.
It just served to show that nothing lasts forever, but something well built and cared for even better can withstand generations and be passed on, preserving a legacy as grandmother and daughter had once both sat with him and now as Reborn also fought to beat his own curse and be set free to have a normal life, the tenth Giglio Nero boss, carrying the same features of her mother and grandmother before her and sadly carrying the same fate they shared, would walk out at any second, take a seat next to him and greet him in the same old fashion as her predecessors had. He prayed she'd have longer than they had as he took his seat on that porch swing once again, a tradition and a legacy passed on to the next generation, and that familiar phrase he'd gotten so used to in the morning.
"Buon Giorno, Reborn."

Prompt 19: ▼☮♒✿♦ for my son, Nosaru from KHR?
Oh, this one is so much fun because I haven’t written anything for Nosaru in a long time, because he’s so forgotten by fandom! I had fun with these, and I hope you’ll enjoy!
Childhood headcanon
I honestly do see Nosaru as being orphaned. His parents were part of the Giglio Nero but died when he was a baby during a mission. Because Aria and later Yuni are very caring, empathetic bosses, they made sure to incorporate Nosaru into the family, with Gamma and Tazaru really becoming the boy’s parental figures as he grew up and his childhood with them was really something he remembers with fondness. He was never forced into fighting, never pushed into doing anything. He was played with, watched over, treated with kindness and love by these men and because he so admired them, he chose to try to emulate them from an early age in fighting for the family.
Friendship headcanon
Nosaru is definitely that friend who needs a mom friend. He’s headstrong, stubborn, and honestly way too fearless for his own good. He needs that grounding voice of ‘no, don’t go jump off that roof onto that trampoline to see what would happen; that’s a really stupid idea.’
Family headcanon
Nosaru isn’t a person who will want to form his own family when he grows up. Because he remembers all the kindness and love the Giglio Nero family showed him, he simply wants to devote his life to…not so much repaying them, but making them proud. To quote Gregory and the Hawk, ‘just trying to be good to the people who raised me.’
Happy headcanon
Nosaru, for all his hot-headedness, is honestly a really cheerful person. He might be quick to anger, but he’s even quicker to grin and smile and laugh. He’s very encouraging of others too – while an insult might come quick when people screw up, once his initial anger fades, he’s quick with compliments and offers to help them learn what to do.
Emotional headcanon
Nosaru struggles with his temper throughout all of his life, he really does. He has a really bad temper and is really quick to anger. Even when he gets sad or grieves, he defaults those emotions to anger because it’s something easier for him to process, easier for him to deal with. He will learn over the years how to better control his anger, how to walk away and go work out or go spar with someone he trusts instead of causing a scene but during his younger years, there were some hard times where he really did struggle with that anger.

Something you didn't mention but I thought was important and supports your theory: the Cervello gave Byakuran his Mare ring. They were always there, working in the background - and foreground when necessary - to make the future happen.
My personal theory about them is similar, actually. I think they work for Kawahira. He's been shown to have assistants/protégés and he's also shown to be a Mist user. What are the Cervello known for? Being visually identical. Their "organization" has teams of Mist users who work to maintain the illusion of the school being fine in the Ring arc.
Additionally, like I said, they gave Byakuran the Sky Mare Ring, part of the Trinesette, and who's in charge of that again? Oh that's right, Kawahira. He has a vested interest in making sure the Trinesette is in play in the world, regardless of the dangers I'm sure he knew Byakuran posed.
It's shown that Luce knew they were gonna be cursed, knew more about the whole thing than the others. She went along with Kawahiras plan because she knew of its importance. But like you said, she had the power of premonition. It's unclear how strong it was, but it's not infeasible that she knew that one day a Sky would be born that would save her future granddaughter and all of her friends too. With that in mind, I think it's possible she was also working with Kawahira. Or, maybe like you said the Cervello worked with her and then Aria and Yuni. They wouldn't necessarily know that the Cervello were also working with Kawahira.
But that means I guess that I'm saying both your theory and mine actually fit together. It's possible that the Cervello were working with the Giglio Nero bosses AND Kawahira to create the best future, a future with the possibility of an end to the curse, an end to condemning people to a slow agonizing death via pacifier, to the Sky Mare owners going insane (because yes, it's stated that Byakuran has his dimension travel power before getting the ring, but then Yuni explains that it's a trait of the Mare Ring in "Sea, Clam, Rainbow", it's purpose in the Trinesette which means that I headcanon that Byakuran isn't the first to go crazy from seeing into alternate universes because he isn't the first Sky Mare, he can't be. He's just the first to decide to destroy all worlds with this power).
So, yeah. I think the Cervello work with/for Kawahira and are Mist users and probably also work with/for the Giglio Nero. I agree with everything you said, I think the Cervello were definitely working on their own agenda and it wasn't a coincidence that they always seemed to be around all the major players during big world changing events.
Which brings up how they were Irie's "assistants" and just happened to be there for almost all of the future arc, something that had multiverse effecting consequences and like you said, also happened to disappear when Yuni showed up to take over the situation.
I am currently rereading the Manga but it's been a while so I can't say if I remember them showing up again after that but it's reasonable to assume either Kawahira or Aria felt they weren't necessary for what happened after the future arc.
I have no good ending, this was all stream of consciousness typed out in one go so uh yeah there you go, that's my theory on the Cervello
Theory: The Cervello were never Varia or Millefiore aligned. They were always a part of the Giglio Nero.
subtitle: I will give all the female characters in this series the love and thought they deserve and Amano can meet me in the pit
Tumblr media
As a recap, the Cervello are a group of mysterious women that show up three times within the series. Two of those times, they (or another person) claims that they will act as impartial judges for the current shounen fighting gimmick. Their supposed impartialness is debatable, but not in the way you might think.
The first time they show up is during the Varia Arc, shortly after Xanxus almost blasts away everyone and Iemitsu gets the (fake) letter from the Ninth. They claim here that they’re an independent group directly reporting to the Ninth, to which Iemitsu and Reborn seem dubious because they’ve never heard about it. However, in the end, they still act as judges throughout the entirety of the Ring Battles including at the end when they pronounce the Varia as disqualified and hand the victory over to Tsuna and Co.
What is particularly interesting, however, is the conversation at the end of the battles when they announce that news and speak with Xanxus.
Tumblr media
Xanxus: Happy your prophecy came true?
To which the Cervello reply…
Tumblr media
Cervello: I’m sorry, sir, but this was neither our wish nor a prophecy we made.
Now, needless to say, while I can only follow the wording of the translator for these scenes, it’s intensely interesting choice of words. A “prophecy” is a prediction, but it is a word that is associated with the mystical and arcane, seeing a result that others can only really guess at. Xanxus isn’t accusing them of planning against them, because that’s like plotting the weather- a prophecy simply sees the clouds forming and hears the approaching thunder.
In turn, they deny that they explicitly wanted this, or that it was a prophecy they foretold…. but they don’t exactly deny it was prophecy.
What I think happened here was Xanxus calling the Cervello out. For all they might have acted like it, treating him and the Varia with deference, the Cervello were never truly on the Varia’s side. The Cervello were working for an outside cause; Xanxus simply mistook it as one similar to his own (or perhaps always knew but his pride assured him that his Varia would win no matter what). By making a jab at the idea of prophecy, he’s saying he knows who the Cervello are truly aligned with.
Now. Let’s think. In the world of KHR, is there anyone to which prophecy- a mystical act of seeing the future- is relevant to…?
