So... Sora is missing some important memories, right? Like... memories are hidden deep in his heart to shield him from the pain. They are there, but also missing from the Chain of Memories. An unchained memory.

A Missing Link

Dream Drop Distance wants to be Chain of Memories Part 2, but it really fails at that.

Chain of Memories was its own story with beginning, middle and end, themes, conclusion, etc. It led into Kingdom Hearts II but it stood by itself.

Dream Drop Distance is if the first round of KHII's Disney Worlds were it's own game. It ends at the equivalent of KHII's Hollow Bastion-sequence: Revealing the villains' plan.

If you've ever wondered why KHIII feels so weird, it's because of that. The midpoint of it's story was the finale of the last game. We're essentialy just playing half a story.

Dream Drop Distance isn't Chain of Memories 2, because it's Kingdom Hearts III Part 1 instead. And both games are worse off for it.

The way she almost reaches out to her, but stops herself.

The way she just stands still for a bit before finally following, wherever Kairi goes, careful but hopeful. Quieter than Selphie ever is otherwise.

How many times has Selphie found Kairi standing at this exact spot, staring out at the ocean?

Kairi ran off fast, but Selphie knew exactly where to come to find her. And she just slowly walks to her side and stares up at her with this absolutely heartwrenching "Kairi?"

They've been here time and time again.
