4 Levels of Mastery
The following is an excerpt from this episode of The State of Things on WUNC(NPR): http://bit.ly/1hioxKw
"This is what the ancient Chinese believed. They said that there are four levels of mastery in the martial art. In the first level of mastery, you meet somebody, and two things have to be present for that person to try to attack you. They have to have ill will and the daring to act. So if you have a certain level of mastery, you can win security for yourself by subduing that person. The second level of mastery is the person feels ill will, but there's something about you that they can't work up the daring. That way you've won security for yourself without even hurting anybody. But that's a provisional kind of security, because the person could return with friends and work up the daring. The third level of mastery is to be invisible. That's a strange thing for those ancient people to say, because I know we live in a time where everybody hates to be invisible. We just want to be visible all the time. They say there's an ultimate level of mastery, of winning security and safety in the world, and that is you meet somebody and something about your presence enriches that person. And then you've won security for yourself, for that person, and likely for the rest of the world, if you've enriched that person's heart and mind. They said the only way to do that is through the practice of art." - Poet Li-Young Lee
