Replaying origins for the first time in nearly a decade and I picked up Zevran last night.

Why have we been collectively rehashing the all the tired memes about the lockpicking and the antivan massage techniques when we could be focusing on the much more important parts of his resume: that he knows LOTS OF JOKES and SIX CARD GAMES?

This is not a perfect analogy but I am making it anyway to try to convey what being online has been like for me lately.

Seeing people say "Oh, Jews are fine, I just hate zionists!" is like seeing "Oh, women are fine, I just hate feminists!"

Zionism and feminism are both very broad socio-political movements that have changed focus over time, that ostensibly have some very basic core tenets but you really need to ask the specific person you're talking to how they personally define it to be sure.

Both have been subject to legitimate criticism, and hostile reactionary bullshit. Had waves, sub-movements, splinters, people with damn near opposite views sharing the term and people with seemingly identical views rejecting it.

You can give working, broad definitions like these:

Feminism is the belief that all people should be treated equally regardless of gender, with a focus on women's rights due to systemic oppression.

Zionism is the belief that all peoples have the right to self determination and safety, with a focus on Jewish people finding it in Israel.

You can also give different definitions! Many people give different definitions! Many people also hold these beliefs but use different names for them for various reasons.

There are self-described zionists who are jingoistic, racist, etc, and who attribute those attitudes to their zionism. Just as there are feminists who are misandrist, bio-essentialist, transphobic, homophobic, and so on, who attribute those attitudes to their feminism.

There are also incredibly selfless, compassionate activists working for positive change in the world who consider themselves zionists and feminists.

It has been very jarring to see people, who I respect, uncritically reblogging posts or headlines that use "zionists" as a stand in for "bad people", just as jarring as it would be to see them sharing things that use "feminists" that way. Especially when those posts contain easily debunked conspiracy theories that I know you'd have seen right through if the OP said "Jews" but because they said "zionists" you swallowed it whole.

I am not asking anyone to stop sharing important information, petitions, news articles, resources, and so on. I am asking you to slow down and stop spreading inflammatory language that paints a broad socio-political movement for Jewish self-determination as inherently bad. The same way I would ask you not to spread inflammatory language that paints gender equality & women's liberation as inherently bad.

If the information is important, please look for other, more neutrally worded posts. Or verify the links yourself and make a fresh post! There is no situation online in which the only way to share information must be to spread such language.

Ok theory time since someone brought up Caprise and I'll like to hear your thoughts on it. it's interesting that Caprise's ability has never been brought up before. she's obviously not talentless since it would've been brought up otherwise. but because of the stuff Fintan said in the Marella short story, Im kind of thinking Caprice *could* be a pyrokinetic that just happens to have another ability to cover it. and maybe this is where the neverseen/Fintan gets involved since it must've been one of them that staged her "accident"??? Idk lol

I suppose Caprise's calm, collected response to Marella's manifesting could indicate a personal familiarity with fire. And it is interesting that we don't know her ability, though she isn't the only character with a mystery ability (Livvy)

However, I do think there's a few key kinks in this theory that make me hesitate. For one, we've seen no evidence anyone who isn't a polyglot can manifest more than one ability (Sophie's an outlier)--and if Caprise is a polyglot, which is entirely possible, it's rare that polyglots only manifest one ability. Which is what Caprise would have to pass as, and we've already got the polyglot with a secret second ability plotline with Gisela.

Second, Keefe says outright, "Marella’s parents were matchmaker-approved, and neither of them are Pyrokinetics like she is" (Legacy, 233). Again, it's possible she could be hiding it, but this feels less like a cheeky cover-up for a reveal later and more like Shannon simply imparting that knowledge.

Essentially, I don't think it's impossible, but I'm of the opinion there won't be any more pyrokinetics in the series. I do think the Neverseen staged her accident, but I always interpreted that as her starting to uncover too much, trying to meddle/catch them (perhaps via Cyrah), and they eliminated her so she couldn't. However! Open to being wrong!!

I like to think that our Snowball (and this era in general) has pretty traditionalist views when it comes to gender roles. Although in this time period, they're still considered a bit progressive in today's terms, they may have conflicting views of women and their place in society: like sure, they're allowed to lead (like Dr. Gaul!!) they're allowed to run for government offices and hold corporate jobs and such, but there are some of them (like Mr. Strabo Plinth, for example) who prefer their wives on the more domestic, stay-at-home side, projecting this archetype of the woman being the keeper of the home. I'd like to imagine that if Snowball's father is still alive, he'd likely have his wife do the same, and since Snowball's big on preserving his father's legacy and all, he'd most definitely adopt the same traditionalist views on gender roles

So here's where it gets a bit complicated: Snowball is aware of Nellie's smarts - in fact, he has already sort of used her abilities in his own rise to power by essentially riding in on Nellie's work which he never had a hand on btw (in the sequel, we'll explore just how he'll use Nellie again in his bid to seize more power after he becomes the president).

BUUUUT, no matter how aware he is of his wife's potentially formidable skills, he wants her fire a little bit more toned down - he wants her more obedient and submissive (to him ONLY of course!!) and we'll soon see just how much he gets off (literally and figuratively lol) on seeing her put on the traditional housewife image. So he sees Nellie as an equal, probably even more, when it comes to brain prowess, but his power-hunger-addled mind would never let her hold more power than him and would prefer her staying at home, raising his kids and keeping the house and more importantly pleasing her husband whenever he requires it 👀😳🫠
