Everything You Need To Know About Writing Gunshot Wounds 

Welcome to the latest installment in my ongoing series on crafting realistic wounds in fiction! After covering stab wounds and burns, it's time to explore the next wound category frequently explored in fiction—gunshot wounds. 

Gunshot wounds are a recurring motif in the realm of storytelling. They're something you can easily come across in every genre, however, authors often poorly portray gunshot wounds due to lack of proper research. I understand finding the right resources to aid with your writing can be hard, so here's my comprehensive guide on how to write gunshot wounds. 

How To Categorise Gunshot Wounds

There are certain factors you need to consider before writing a gunshot wound. These details are instrumental in crafting a vivid and plausible narrative while avoiding plot holes. The first and most important one is identifying the type of firearm used to inflict the wound. 

Picking The Right Firearm 

Selecting the appropriate firearm to inflict a gunshot wound is a pivotal decision. It's not just about choosing any gun; it's about picking the right one to align with your desired outcome and the narrative's overall impact. Here's a quick guide on how to pick the right firearm.  

The Impact of Firearm Selection

The firearm you choose can significantly influence the severity and appearance of the gunshot wound. Whether your goal is a graphic, gory injury or a precise, long-range shot, the choice of firearm plays a crucial role. Here are some guns you to consider:

Handguns: These are versatile and commonly used in close-quarters combat. They can result in gruesome, close-contact wounds with a higher potential for damage due to their stopping power.

Shotguns: Shotguns disperse shot pellets upon firing, making them suitable for creating a broader pattern of injuries. If you aim to depict a devastating, close-range gunshot wound, shotguns can be a fitting choice.

Rifles: Rifles are known for their accuracy at longer distances. When you need a precise, long-range shot, rifles are the go-to option. They tend to produce a cleaner wound channel, especially when used for a targeted, well-planned injury.

Choosing the Right Firearm for Your Narrative

The type of firearm you select should align with your story's objectives. If you intend to evoke visceral, gory reactions, opt for handguns or shotguns used in close proximity. On the other hand, if precision and long-range engagement are key, rifles can achieve your desired outcome.

Keep in mind that firearm selection can affect the wound's damage, trajectory, and overall portrayal in your narrative. 

Categorising The Wound 

Once you've identified the type of firearm, you need to establish what type of wound your character will incur. 

In order to bring your character's injuries to life, it's important to first identify what you're dealing with. You can do this by categorising the injury based on several factors. For gunshot wounds, this includes the type of firearm used, the bullet's trajectory, and the specific areas of the body affected.

You can categorise your character's gunshot would into seven main categories, here's a quick breakdown of what these categories look like and the level of severity associated with them: 

Penetrating Gunshot Wounds: These wounds occur when a bullet enters the body but doesn't exit. The bullet remains inside the body, causing damage along its path.

Perforating Gunshot Wounds: In this case, the bullet enters the body and exits on the opposite side. This type of wound can have a different set of implications due to the bullet's trajectory.

Ricochet Gunshot Wounds: Ricochet wounds happen when the bullet bounces off a surface before hitting the character. The nature of the surface can influence the severity of the wound.

Through-and-Through Gunshot Wounds: As the name suggests, these wounds occur when the bullet enters one side of the body and exits through the other. The trajectory can greatly affect the injury's severity.

Close-Contact Gunshot Wounds: These wounds result from the firearm being fired at extremely close range. The proximity of the gun to the body can lead to unique wound patterns and burn injuries.

Shotgun Wounds: Shotgun wounds differ from those caused by handguns or rifles. The shot pellets disperse upon firing, leading to a broader pattern of injury.

Long-Range Gunshot Wounds: When a character is shot from a considerable distance, the wound might appear different due to factors like bullet tumbling and loss of velocity.

The Anatomy of a Gunshot Wound

To create a vivid portrayal of a gunshot wound, writers need to grasp not only the external appearance but also the internal effects it has on the body. A well-executed description captures both the physical trauma and the emotional turmoil experienced by the character. Here are some symptoms you should take into consideration.

1. External Appearance and Bleeding:

Wound Size: The size of a gunshot wound can vary significantly based on the type of firearm and bullet used. Smaller calibers may leave entry and exit wounds that are relatively small, while larger bullets or high-velocity rounds can create much larger wounds. Be specific about the size, which can help readers visualize the injury.

Blood Loss: Gunshot wounds typically result in bleeding. The severity of bleeding depends on factors like the wound's location, the size of the blood vessels damaged, and the bullet's trajectory. Mention the amount of blood, but avoid excessive gore unless it serves a specific purpose in your narrative.

Coughing Up Blood: If the gunshot wound affects the chest or lung area, characters may cough up blood. This symptom often signifies a more critical injury and can add drama to your story.

2. Internal Damage and Symptoms:

Pain: Gunshot wounds are painful, and the character should express this pain through their actions, dialogue, and internal thoughts. Describe the sharp, burning, or throbbing sensations as they resonate through the character's body.

Shock: Depending on the severity of the wound, shock can set in. The character may appear pale, sweaty, and disoriented. This state of shock can impact their actions and decisions.

Loss of Function: A gunshot wound may impair the use of the injured body part. Describe any loss of function, such as the inability to move a limb or use it effectively.

Fainting: In extreme cases, characters may faint due to the pain, blood loss, or shock. Be sure to contextualize this within the narrative, as fainting can have significant consequences for the character.

By diving into the details of a gunshot wound's anatomy, you can craft a compelling and realistic portrayal that draws readers into the character's harrowing experience. I haven't exactly covered every symptom out there, but these are the major ones you should take into account when writing. 

Medical Assessment and Treatment

Once you've established your gunshot wound, it's now time to focus on the aftermath. One of the main factors to consider is the medical process that follows. If your character is supposed to die from the gunshot then you could probably skip this section, but if they're alive here are things you need to consider. 

1. Initial Assessment:

Scene Safety: In a real-life scenario, safety is paramount. First responders will ensure the scene is secure before approaching the injured person. Consider factors like the presence of firearms, potential threats, and the safety of medical personnel.

ABCs of Assessment: Medical professionals follow the ABCs—Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. Writers can reflect this in their storytelling by highlighting the character's ability to breathe, cough, or speak after being shot.

Vital Signs: Mentioning vital signs like heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation can help convey the character's condition and the urgency of their medical treatment.

2. Trauma Assessment:

Focused Assessment: Medical personnel perform a thorough examination to identify the gunshot wound's location, entry and exit points, and any associated injuries. This assessment informs their treatment plan.

Imaging: Depending on the complexity of the injury, X-rays or other imaging may be required to visualize the bullet's trajectory and any potential damage to internal organs or bones.

3. Treatment:

Bleeding Control: Stopping the bleeding is a top priority. This may involve applying pressure, packing the wound, or even tourniquet application in extreme cases.

Wound Care: Depending on the wound's severity, cleaning and suturing may be required. The character's response to this procedure can add an element of realism to your narrative.

Pain Management: Gunshot wounds are excruciatingly painful, and medical personnel will often administer pain relief or anesthesia during treatment.

Monitoring and Observation: Patients with gunshot wounds require careful observation and monitoring for signs of infection, complications, or changes in their condition.

By accurately portraying the medical assessment and treatment of gunshot wounds, you not only enhance the authenticity of your writing but also depict the physical and emotional toll such injuries can take on your characters. This attention to detail helps your readers connect more deeply with the story.

The Psychological Impact

Gunshot wounds don't just inflict physical harm; they also leave lasting emotional and psychological scars. It is important to note that the extent of the psychological impact on your characters will heavily rely on various factors. 

For example, you need to consider whether or not this injury is something normal for them. Do they work as a spy, assassin, or other such roles that would mandate such dangerous injuries? You also need to consider who shot them. Does this wound come with emotional damage as well? Think of Aaron Warner’s reaction to Juliet shooting him. 

If you’re sure your character will have some extent of a psychological impact, here are some factors you should consider. 

1. Shock and Denial:

Immediate Response: Characters who have been shot may initially experience shock and denial. This can manifest as disbelief, emotional numbness, or a surreal sense of detachment from the situation.

Physical Symptoms: Shock can lead to physical symptoms like trembling, chills, or even fainting. Incorporating these details can make the character's reaction more genuine.

2. Fear and Anxiety:

Survivor's Guilt: Characters may grapple with survivor's guilt if they are the only ones to emerge unscathed in a violent encounter.

Anxiety: The threat of recurrence or the fear of returning to the location where the shooting occurred can trigger anxiety and panic attacks.

3. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):

Flashbacks and Nightmares: Characters who have survived a gunshot wound may experience recurring flashbacks and nightmares, vividly reliving the traumatic event.

Hypervigilance: PTSD can lead to hypervigilance, where characters are constantly on edge, expecting danger at every turn.

4. Depression and Isolation:

Emotional Withdrawal: Characters may withdraw from social interactions, experiencing feelings of isolation and sadness.

Emotional Numbness: Some may describe feeling emotionally numb, unable to experience joy or pleasure.

5. Recovery and Resilience:

Therapeutic Support: In your storytelling, consider how characters seek therapy or counseling to cope with their emotional scars. Therapy can be a path toward recovery and resilience.

By addressing the psychological impact of gunshot wounds on your characters, you create more layered and relatable individuals within your narrative. This depth allows readers to connect with the characters on a profound emotional level.

Black Smoke: Chapter 4 - Carpe Noctem

“Is the blindfold really necessary?” You say as Jake helps you out of the car.

His gallery is finally finished after what felt like years, which really was only six months. He’s been putting in the hours of helping renovate the building while simultaneously completing shoots at the studio which left little time for you. Which you didn’t mind because when he did have time for you, it was only about you. He gave his undivided attention. And tonight is one of those nights. The grand opening of his gallery is finally here and he is giving you the first look before it’s filled with people and loud music.

“I want you to be surprised.” He says. You can hear the jingle of keys and the turn of a lock. His hand grabs hold of yours and he guides up the few steps and into the new space. “Okay.. Are you ready?” He asks.

“Yes,” You giggle. “I want to see!”

He unties the blindfold and pulls it away from your eyes. He watches as your jaw slowly falls open making him chuckle. “I take it you like it?”

You nod your head and spin slowly on your heels as you take in the new look of the place. Brick walls, with accented black pillars. A few walls were raised in various spots around the room to give the element of different areas. Small spotlights hang from the ceiling accompanied by a couple fans that are currently spinning slowly. Photos are already hung on the walls. Some from Africa, one of Sam’s engagement photos. A few from Jake’s trip to Costa Rica a few months ago. All of his work was on complete display.

You feel him reach for your hand and pull you through the gallery and around the maze-like walls. “I have one piece left that needs to be hung.” He says. “I was debating whether I wanted to show it or even sell it. I didn’t like the idea of having my girl hanging on the wall in some stranger’s living room.”

He pulls you into the back room and walks over to a large canvas, primarily covered by a black sheet. He carefully pulls the sheet away and reveals the photo he had taken of you in bed in Africa. Half your body is bare and exposed while the other half is hidden beneath the bed sheets.

“Wow..” Was all you could manage to say as you stare at the life size printing of you.

“Show it off.” You say as you wrap your arms around his neck. “Show me off.. Sell it. Because no matter what..” You press your lips to his neck and leave open mouth kisses along his veins. “You get me at the end of tonight.. And every night.” You tug on his hips, pulling him against your body. You can feel his hardening cock pressed against your torso.

“Are you sure?” He asks. “Because I'd be more than happy with only the cheetah photo being on display.”

You nod your head and press your lips to his. He groans against you and crouches down to pick you up and rest you on his waist. He carries you over to the table as you work hastily at unbuttoning his shirt and yanking it out from inside his pants. He sets you down on the table and pushes your dress up your thighs and to your waist before dragging down your lace underwear. He glides his fingers your folds, slowly and at a teasing pace. Your back arches against his body and your head falls backwards.

“Uh uh uh..” He hums as he lifts your head back up. “I want to see your pretty eyes as I fuck you with my fingers.” He captures your lips in a kiss as he pushes his index finger and middle finger past your folds. A breathy moan escapes from you as you clutch tightly to the waistband of his pants. His fingers pump mercilessly in and out of you as he holds your upright with his other hand. His eyes not once lose contact with yours. “Does this feel good?” You moan in response and he chuckles. “I love this pussy so much..” He curls his fingers inside of you causing a high pitched moan to fall from your lips and fill the room. “She’s so warm and feels so good.” He feels your walls clench around his fingers and he smirks, looking at you from beneath hooded eyelids. He continues the fast pumping of his fingers bringing you closer and closer to your orgasm.

Finally, that imaginary rubber band snaps within and that warm and intoxicating feeling washes you. You feel the cool wood of the table beneath your back as he gently lays you back before dropping to his knees between your legs. The warmth of his tongue swipes through your center as he licks up your release. His fingers are dug into the flesh of your outer thigh as his thumbs press circles near your pelvis.

When your high slowly goes away, he backs away and stands back up to his feet. He pulls out a handkerchief from the breast pocket of his suit jacket and uses it to wipe his face off before folding it and using it to clean you up. He sits you back up and helps you back on your feet before guiding your legs through the holes of your underwear and pulling them back up your legs.

He pulls you in for a gentle kiss and tilts your head just slightly backwards. “I’ll find someone to hang the photo.” He says.

The bells jingle out front indicating someone’s arrival. “Jake?” A male’s voice call. “Brother, where are you?”

“In the back!” Jake calls out. “We’ll be right out!”

“We? I don’t even want to know.”

Jake rolls his eyes and makes you giggle. “Come on.”

He takes your hand and leads you back through the gallery and towards the front where Josh stands in front of the elephant calf photo he captured in Africa. He turns around to face the two of you. A wide smile evident on his face.

“Beyond proud of you, Jacob.” Josh says as he claps his hand on Jake’s shoulder.

“Thank you.”

“Tonight is going to be amazing. I’ve already heard this event is completely sold out.”

“Don’t remind me.” Jake sighs.

“Oh don’t tell me you’re nervous,” Josh says. “Come on now, remember what I used to tell you before we’d hit the stage?” Jake nods his head and Josh rests his hand again on Jake’s shoulder. “It’s all going to be great. All you gotta do is stand here and look pretty,” He chuckles. “Although I’m pretty sure Y/N here has got you beat.”

Jake looks over to you and leans slightly to kiss your temple. “Takes a bit of pressure off of me then,” He says.

“Oh hush..” You say playfully pushing him.

As the night progresses and the place gets filled with a lot of people, you find yourself retreating towards the back and dodging servers as they come out with trays filled yet again with hors-d’œuvres and champagne glasses filled to the brim. Between the loud music and the sea of people, it was beginning to feel a little overwhelming and you needed some air to relax.

And seems like you aren't the only one hiding out from the party. Jake is seated on a couple crates that are stacked up against the wall in the stock room and he’s cracking up a bottle of beer.

“Hiding out are we?” You say.

He lifts his head before scoffing and taking a long drink of the beer. “I wasn’t anticipating so many people,” He says. “There’s a shit ton of people that showed up, most of whom Josh invited.”

“Aw, he’s just being a supportive brother.” You say as you stand behind him and rub your hands over his shoulders.

“Which is great but damn.. I felt claustrophobic out there.”

“You are a little tense.” You say. “Want me to make you feel a little better?”

“And what do you have in mind?”

You walk around to stand in front of him. You grab his hand and stand him up before pulling him to the back office. “Sit..” You say, guiding him into the desk chair. He slumps down and slowly relaxes his body. You walk away to lock the door and come back to rest yourself on his lap. “Soo.. About you being on stage..” You say as your arms around his neck and his hands find their place on your ass. “Were you a stripper?”

He laughs and shakes his head. “Not even close..”

“Oh.. Darn.. You would have been a good one..” You trace your finger down the exposed skin of his chest until you reach the waistband of his pants. “I love watching you strip..” You unbutton the rest of his shirt as you lean over to place a kiss on his chest. Unbuttoning his pants, you drag the zipper down and pull him free.

“Baby..” He says as he reaches for your hands. “This chair is pretty old.. I don’t think it can withstand the trauma it is going to endure.”

You giggle and he picks you up and lays you across his desk, pushing nearly everything onto the floor. Just like earlier in the day, he pushes your dress up to your hips and pulls your underwear down your legs. He lines himself up with your entrance and teases it a little, which only makes him whimper himself.

“Fuck, you’re so wet already.” He says as he slowly pushes himself inside of you. He pushes so deep until he completely bottoms out.

“What if I told you that I’ve been wet like this all night?” You say with a smirk. “Might be naughty of me to admit that I’ve been secretly hoping you would just take me right there in the middle of the room. Let everyone watch.”

“I almost did..” He admits. He begins to rock his hips in slow and languid movements as he holds your firmly within his hands. “I knew I should have made you change your dress.”

“Oh but I thought… Fuck, Jake..” You grab hold of both lapels of his suit jacket and pull him down on top of you. “I thought red was your favorite color on me?”

You yelp loudly as he rams himself roughly and deeply into you. “It is, love.” His breathing grows increasingly rapid as he picks up his speed, pounding so ruthlessly into you. “But tonight… It's about me… But… All eyes.. Fuck.. Have been… On you.” He quickly pulls out of you and drags you off the desk before shoving you into the wall with your ass facing him. He readjusts behind you and pushes right back inside. “I’ve had a couple men ask about you and why you seem to be everywhere…”

“And what did you tell them?”

“That you’re my girlfriend.. And my muse..” He scoffs and pulls out before turning you around. “I think a couple of them were jealous.. But who wouldn’t be? I picked the most beautiful woman..” He nudges your legs apart to stand in between before hoisting you up on his waist and pressing your back against the wall. He thrusts back up into you. His climax is coming soon but he wants you to finish first so he holds back for as long as he can. He feels you clenching around him just a second later. “Come on baby.. Cover me with your sweetness..”

Your high takes over your body and you find yourself gripping his hair tightly in your grasp. He continues to thrust in you until his own release spills out. His chest heaves and his warm breath covers the skin of your chest. Soon he pulls out of you and sets you down carefully in the chair. He retrieves your underwear and helps you put them back on.

A knock comes on the door and Jake quickly fixes his clothes, tucking in his shirt and straightening the color and sliding his jacket back on. He cracks the door open just enough that it’s only him that the person on the other side sees.

“Josh..”

“Can you please keep your dick inside your pants for more than five minutes?” Josh responds. “You need to come back here.”

“Give me like two minutes.”

“No, now.” Josh demands. “Come on, I have this guy that is highly interested in your portrait of Y/N.”

Hey you! Yes, you! Learn how to use GZDoom!

Hi, I'm Lynn "WJB" Beck, and I'm here to tell you about an exciting new old game engine that is extremely easy to use for not just making original games, but also mods and animations and stuff!

And this engine... is GZDoom.

GZDoom is an enhanced sourceport of the 1993 first-person shooter, demon-punching simulator and stress-test for pretty much any technology that contains a computer. As opposed to more low-key and/or "vanilla" sourceports like Chocolate Doom or Boom, GZDoom allows for a lot more options, including Build Engine-style voxels, several types of dynamic lighting, and even stuff that was originally exclusive to specific Doom Engine games, like Strife's light RPG mechanics, This means that it can be used to make extremely impressive "total conversion" mods, and even fully original games with entirely custom stuff!

This guide covers how to get started, and a basic overview of how certain things work (get ready to learn about lumps!).

Getting Started

Ok so before you can start Doing The Thing, you need to... install some software! Don't worry, it's only like 4 and they're fairly lightweight.

Go to this website here and download the most recent version of GZDoom. You will need this to actually run your game.

Go here and get Slade. You will need this to import custom graphics and audio, as well as to use text-lumps (which are basically necessary, even if you're making a basic custom level set, and I will explain why further down).

This ZDoom Forum topic is where you can get Ultimate Doom Builder. While there are other Doom mapping tools, UDB is what I personally use, and it's extremely beginner-friendly while also being fairly versatile. It even has a built-in script editor, so you can modify a script and then immediately jump into testing to see if what you've done has worked!

Finally, you need a copy of specifically Doom 2. You could use Doom 1, but in my opinion Doom 2 is better because it has a lot more stuff than the first game, and - let's be real - you'll probably be doing a lot of vanilla mapping to get to grips with the editor before you can start making your big ambitious game (which is what I'm doing over on my modding sideblog, check it out). I'll leave this one up to you. EDIT: I forgot that Freedoom exists. That's also good.

Mounting stuff into Ultimate Doom Builder

Next, you'll need to get UDB set up. This is fairly easy. First open UDB and, as soon as it starts up, go to the top-menu and click "Tools", then go to Game Configuration. Select "GZDoom: Doom 2 (UDMF)" and click "add resource"; using the attached file-explorer, locate the Doom 2 folder on your computer's file system and add DOOM2.WAD to the list of resources, then do the same with gzdoom.pk3 in the GZDoom folder (making sure to switch the "Add Resource" tab from "From WAD" to "From PK3". Click Ok, and you're done!

If you want to put your custom graphics into the game, you simply create a WAD file in Slade, put your graphics in (more on that later) and save it; then when creating a map in UDB, this box will appear:

If you click "Add resource" here, you can then select your custom wad and use any assets, code etc. in your map!

How Slade works

This bit is a bit more complex because it deals with multiple file formats and methods of importing stuff, but I'll start simply by explaining textures, flats, sprites and patches.

Before I do that though, I need to talk about Markers. To define images as a sprite, patch or flat, you need to put them between a pair of Markers with specific names, which you can create by clicking the "New Entry" button:

"Empty (Marker)" is selected by default, so all you need to do is name it. The naming format is [LETTER]_START to start a section and [LETTER]_END to end one; S_Start/S_End are for sprites, P_Start/P_End are for patches, and F_Start and F_End are for flats. You can, additionally, further subdivide this by making another pair of Markers inside a Start/End pair with a number after the letter, but I'm not sure if this does anything (my only experience with it is that the Doom 2 wad file does this).

Now to explain how these things actually work! First, sprites. A sprite is an image that represents an object or creature in the game, and a cool thing that GZDoom does is let you use generic PNGs instead of Doom's proprietary GFX format. Sprites use the following naming scheme: a four-letter identifier, a single character denoting what frame of the animation the image represents (the Arch-Vile, which has the most sprites out of any monster in Doom 2, has frames that go from A all the way to Z, and then [, \ and ]), and finally a number from 0-8 that indicates the angle the Thing (that's the technical term for a Doom Engine entity, by the way) is at. Using the Imp as an example:

The "0" angle just means that the sprite should look the same regardless of the player's angle; this is used for items, decorations, the death animations of all monsters (including players), and the two sprites used for Doom II's final boss.

A cool thing about sprite angles is that you can actually make a sprite work for multiple angles; by adding an extra frame-letter and angle-number after the first set, you can do things like have a monster whose left and right walking frames are the same but mirrored by formatting the sprite's name as something like NAMEA2A8 (in fact, the Imp uses this technique for all its sprites apart from its death animation).

Next up, flats! Flats are square textures that are designed to go on floors or ceilings (though you can use them anywhere, including as sky textures!) but lack the flexibility of patch-based textures. You literally just. Import your texture and put it between F_Start and F_End. That's it. That's how a flat works.

And finally, patches. Patches are complicated, but very easy to use when you know what you're doing. First, put your image between P_Start and P_End, then right click it, put your mouse over the "Graphics" dropdown, and select "Add to Patch Table". You will then be prompted to create a TEXTURES lump; click "Ok" with the default settings. This creates a Texture1 lump, and the "Patch Table" (which is just a list of patches, which I will explain soon), alongside P_Start and P_End if they aren't already present (and a dummy texture). Double-click Texture1 to open it, and then select "New Texture" (you can adjust the scale, too):

Once this is done, go to the top-right corner and click "Add patch":

By default, you only have access to any patches you have assigned, but a cool trick I use in my own mapsets whenever I want to modify an official texture is to copy its Texture1 entry from the Doom 2 WAD, then paste it into my WAD's Texture1 and rename it. This does create copies of the constituent patches in your own wad's P_Start/P_End section, but you can delete those and it will still work fine.

Both patches and Flats are limited to 8-letter names, so be warned.

The actual final thing to talk about is converting PNGs to GFX; this is a simple process, but it can cause issues with colour. Basically, Doom has a very specific palette:

While this can look pretty good, on images it wasn't designed for or that use colours it doesn't feature, it can look pretty bad. For example, if I put this random image I made through the conversion process:

Then it comes out looking like this:

All the more cyan-adjacent hues become more blue, it nuked the antialiasing, and some of the gaps in my colouring are now much more obvious (especially on the fifth character's head and legs).

My point is, only do this if you want your mod to be compatible with more vanilla sourceports, or if you want to reduce the filesize. Otherwise, you're better off just using a strict palette when making the sprites and keeping them as PNGs.

Custom palettes are possible, but like. Literally all you do is click "New Entry", select "palette", name it, click the "Import from" button (purple page with a diagonal arrow on the top-middle of the palette-view window), set the filetype on the file explorer to "PNG", and import your custom palette image (which should be square (non-square images get squished and lose some colours) and 16x16 at the smallest, though the images I normally use are 128x128 because for some reason they're scaled up by a factor of 8, even though they display the same when imported regardless of size). You can even test them out or add them to the in-built palette list, which is nice. If you want it to override the default palette when your WAD is loaded, name the lump "PLAYPAL", which is what Doom's palette is called.

Now we get to talk about text lumps! I don't have much to say. Do the "New Entry" thing, select "Text", and name the file. The ZDoom wiki - which I will be linking to at the end - has information on each type, so check those out.

Map making

This is the final main section of this, and I'll try keeping it fairly brief and simple. Doom maps use four main elements; Vertices, Lines, Sectors, and Things. A Vertex is, well a vertex; it's a point in 2D space that acts as a starting or connecting point on a Line. Lines can be either walls or walkover triggers, depending on how you use them. Sectors can be rooms or shapes on the floor, and have properties such as damaging floors, being "underwater" (the player can swim and sound is muffled), or even having different gravity. Finally, a Thing is any entity that isn't one of those, ranging from monsters to player-starts to decorations, plus some complex technical ones I can't even begin to explain.

Decisions & Desire Part I

Notes: Next part is much happier, I promise. They are both just really stubborn. There are two songs associated with this installment: Le cygne by Camille Saint-Saëns and My Body is a Cage by Arcade Fire.

Context: Anya is Viktor's childhood friend from Zaun. She is a wealthy donor to the Academy, and is also Viktor's patron; she gained her fortune through winning the lottery. She is a mage, a theoretical physicist, and is a different humanoid species -- she lives for centuries, and only has one mate for her lifespan. Viktor's love and attraction for her grows, but he does not want to become her mate, so that she will not spend the rest of her lifespan alone.

Viktor spent the day poring over the notes Anya gave him: translations of ancient runes, spell castings, and various theoretical equations in the sciences of physics. There were many aspects which he could decipher, but there were many to which he was not privy; Anya was the mage, capable of great magicks he could not fathom. Many of her mentions and notations were lost on his limited knowledge, save for those he could reference in what few ancient texts and scholarly scripts had not been abandoned behind lock and key. Thus, he decided to visit her at her mansion, hoping to divine her help. He knew she had no responsibilities to attend to that day – whether at the Academy, or at her temple – and he had been given free invitation to her home whenever he pleased. 

The Sun sweltered in the middle of the sky, its rays clung to the final days of Summer before the Equinox. Viktor nearly felt faint as he exited the carriage and found shelter in the shade of her porch lattice. He pressed on the intercom and announced himself to her; he was quickly let inside, where the chill of her marble home brought relief to the heat sickness that threatened him. He could not hear her bustling about the kitchen, nor did he hear her pattering feet throughout the floors of the mansion; the door to her bedroom was open, though there were no shadows that moved within it. But he was guided to the glass door of a patio with the sound of splashing water; outside, he found the disturbed waters of a long, rectangular pool, and a fast swimming shape moved beneath them.

Anya’s face appeared at the corner closest to him. “Will you join me?” she laughed as she slicked back her hair.

He smirked and shook his head. “I prefer to stay on land,” he said. “I hope I have come at a good time. I do not want to interrupt your day off with work.”

“No – please. I want to hear everything you have to say.” She motioned to a shaded cabana beside the pool, furnished with lounge chairs and small tables, and a pitcher full of fresh water. “But if it is alright with you, I will stay here.”

“By all means,” he agreed, and retreated into the cover of the canopy. Her kind were acclimated to warmer weather, and he rarely saw her so happy than when the Sun was bright and torrid; he would hate to pry her of joy. “I had a question about one of your notes, ‘transmutation’ –” he began, “you have labelled it in runes, however I cannot make sense of it. The other proposed actions – these, spells, written in runes – seem to have a clearly defined variable in what is required for them. However, transmutation does not.”

Anya was flat on her back as she enjoyed the heat of the Sun; she spun underneath the water and swam closer towards him. She clung to the wall of the pool, and rested her folded arms on its edge. “Magic requires balance,” she said. “All actions must have an equal and opposite reaction – magic is simply a science. I am sure you have heard: ‘all magic has a price’, an expression of that same principle – but rarely is magic ever so dramatic,” she chuckled. 

“So, the equation is incomplete,” he presumed and reread her combination of runes in his notebook – now interpreting them as algebraic expressions, rather than nebulous concepts he was forbidden to learn.

“Well, I cannot decipher what it wants in return,” she said. “The building blocks of a transmutation ritual are there, plainly, in the runes – but as for what the crystal will give or take to balance out the action, I have only guesses.” She dipped her head back in the water to wet her quickly drying hair and brushed the droplets from her face. “It is an ancient magic – one that is not of my culture.”

Anya disappeared beneath the surface of the pool again, and Viktor sat, engrossed, in the runework she laid out on the page; with his newfound understanding of how spellwork functioned, he reread each passage to determine its proposed outcome.

The Sun waned from the center of the firmament, where it lingered towards the Western horizon and a golden hue cast itself over the forest edge in the near distance; the bouncing waters in the pool glimmered with the shine of quicksilver; long shadows careened over the perimeter of the mansion and the topiaries around the patio; and Anya sighed with satisfaction from her prolonged leisure. Viktor still sat with the notebook in his hand, roughly attempting to piece together runework of his own; his feet were elevated on an ottoman, and the pitcher of water was now half empty beside him. They had hardly spoken, besides an occasional observation, or a quick question, but they enjoyed their mutual company in gladdened silence.

He heard Anya begin to exit the pool, as the water lapped at the shore’s steps, and he moved to stand in the hopes that he could show her the rune equations he had crudely written. But as he looked up from his notebook, the image of Anya, and the beauty of her figure caressed in golden light, struck him viscerally.

She wore the half sheer fabric of her people, it clung to her every curve with wetness and decadence. She stepped out of the pool with grace and assurance, and as she stood to greet the dying light of day, she rolled her neck towards its rays; they kissed the figure of her waist and hips with bright flashes of lustre. The length of her dark hair fell over her back, and she wound her arms around it to drain every drop from its locks; they gathered in a puddle at her feet, trailing in streams back into the pool behind her. He could hear her hum as she did so, each strand of hair a singular, sensitive nerve, she combed her fingers through small tangles with quiet soughs.

Viktor quickly looked away, uncertain what to do with himself. A heat gathered in his thighs, and he held his breath. He was overcome with an emotion he had never experienced, but in dreams. Rarely had he gazed on Anya to acknowledge her beauty, but never had he felt for her the fervor that quickened his blood with desire. 

"Are you hungry?” she asked.

“What?” 

“Would you like to join me for dinner?” she asked again. It was not unusual for Viktor to be distracted by his thoughts, but the stoicism that hardened his face was deeper than was his wont, and he refused to look at her. 

“No. Thank you,” he said, and chanced to glance at her.

“Very well,” Anya agreed, suspicious, but she allowed her friend his oddities. “If you change your mind, you always have a place here.”

She continued to brush her hands through her hair, and when she returned its long locks to rest along her back, she shook her mane of any other droplets. Her soft breasts moved with her as her body swayed and shuddered, and she took a refreshed breath as the tail end of a breeze passed through the foliage around them.

Viktor’s breath remained captive in his throat, and his hands gnawed at the notebook clasped between them; he was frozen there, in her light, and he had every instinct to both flee and fall at her feet. But the passion of his instincts was marred by the impotence that robbed him of the chance to ever show her his devoted desire with the sacrament of his body. Lascivious thoughts wound themselves throughout his mind, and at their impulse, he was tempted to profess his ardor regardless of the consequences. 

But Viktor chided himself for his prurience, and quickly, he gathered himself and his cane, and began to leave the patio and her home. “I have to go,” he said.

Anya was left on the patio, bemused by her friend’s unusual exit. He often hid himself away from the company of others when he felt overwhelmed, or when he was burdened with memories of tragedies long past – it was a mutual trait they shared; but his flight from her instead, appeared riddled with fear and despair. She worried for her friend and his wellbeing.

Viktor spent the remainder of the day tormented by the agony in knowing that, even if his physical form could function in the way it was intended, Anya would suffer nonetheless. She returned all of his affections, she kissed him with equal passion, but his desire for her, and his desire to please her, did not outweigh his moral duty to protect her. Even from himself. Refraining from bonding with her was the most obvious and ethical choice. Still, his mind entertained the fantasy of fulfilling his lifespan with her – in the hope that he could find a solution to the dilemma: that he could bond with her now, and that she would be spared any pain for the remainder of her long life. He weighed every consequence, charted every nuance of every possible outcome should they spend their lives together: he thought of what involvements or restrictions would be required of him at her temple; he contemplated the consequences of being involved with an Academy donor, if he would need to quit his position there; he sought visions of their children. But grief found him once more as he pained himself to imagine their faces, and their genetic components. He was told as an adolescent that the probability of his reproduction would be limited, due to the prolonged chemical exposure he endured in the Fissures. He never longed for children – they were a hindrance, and an additional responsibility he could not afford, neither monetarily, nor emotionally. But the thought that he could not offer Anya the option of their creation was yet another mark against the benefits of their union.

He attended his physician, and sought clarity and advice, on both impotence and infertility. It was the same physician he had seen since he moved to Piltover, after his acceptance into the Academy – there were few in the upper city who understood the effects of post-polio syndrome, and who were trained enough to treat the atrophy and nerve damage associated with it.

“It’s not an uncommon complaint,” his doctor reassured him. “There are plenty of treatments. Are you sexually active now?”

“No, I have not been.”

His doctor eyed him with disbelief. “Ever?” he pressed.

Viktor pursed his lips. “No.” 

“With anyone? Men or women.”

“No.”

“I can only do my best to help if you tell me the truth.”

“I am becoming offended.”

The doctor put up his hands and returned to reading his clipboard. Out of the many years he had seen him, Viktor was never known to be a liar. “Alright, alright. You’d be surprised how many people try to lie about this stuff. I just want to get the whole picture.”

Viktor paused and suppressed his offence with discomfort. He advanced the conversation instead: “Intimacy has never been of interest to me. However, I am entertaining the idea of intimacy with one person.” He hesitated, and swallowed, a part of him afraid that if he spoke his concern aloud it would somehow alter the future – like the runes and the spellwork he rigorously studied: “I must also know if I am able to have children.”

“Not a problem. I’ll write a prescription, and schedule a test. You’ll get the results in about a week.” The doctor scrawled words on a pad of paper; he tore it and handed it to Viktor. 

He was twenty-eight with a prescription of pills made for old men – it did nothing to preserve his self-confidence.

Viktor made scarce appearances in the lab, and he avoided Anya altogether for the duration of the week. He had no wherewithal to sustain the society of others, especially that of Anya. He continued to work on the various combinations of runes apart from Jayce – there were thousands of possibilities, and Viktor found it preoccupied his mind well enough to dispose of his anxiety, if only temporarily.

On the sixth day, he received a letter from his physician’s office, it sat unopened on his dining table for hours, and he dreaded its contents. For nearly a week, he allowed himself to linger in the purgatory between hope and pessimism – there was a quiet part of him that imagined a life with Anya, that entreated him to dream of what her child would look like, what it would sound like, how it would live long after his expiration; a small and fantastical acceptance wormed itself through his mind, that he would be its father, that he could give her a gift which would last the long ages of her life by her side, and by which she would always remember him.

There was less than a one percent chance he could conceive, the results read.

His hand curled around the paper, and balled into a fist. He threw the results across the room, and anything else in his way – he retreated from his apartment.

The Sun hung in the mid horizon, fiery streaks of orange and lavender illuminated the sky, but he had no appreciation for them. He sat in his usual nook, nestled within the hydraulic dam he was wont to visit when his mind rejected the atmosphere of reality. A cigarette rested between his fingers that ran along his furrowed brow, his right leg over the ledge; a cool and quiet breeze sifted through the edge of the cities, and brought with it various scents and memories. He should have enjoyed the relaxation that seemed to beckon him, but his heart was bitter and acrid towards anything gentle and soft.

“If I did not know better, I would say you are avoiding me,” Anya’s soft voice spoke from behind him.

Viktor started, and his head whipped around to see her standing there, meekly in the shadows. “Myša,” he exhaled, the agitation of surprise lacing his voice. Her hands tugged at each other nervously, they hung at her middle; her eyes pled him not to send her away. Despite his ire, and the anguish that prevented him from holding her gaze, he did not renounce her.

Anya sat opposite him, and watched as the veil of thin clouds passed over the large disk of the Sun in the distance. “Do you ever wonder what it would be like, to be back in Zaun?” she asked. 

He gave no answer.

“I would never wish for it. But a morbid part of me misses it. I knew my place there. Things – though they were awful – made sense. Now I am free, but I feel lost.”

He took another breath from his cigarette.

“I won everything. But now I am alone.”

He scoffed, the irony that he could not satisfy her desire of companionship panged him. “I suppose all of us should be careful what we wish for.”

She looked at him, and furrowed. “Have I offended you?”

He sighed and brushed his finger over his brow as he thought. “No, Anya. You have not.” He put out the cigarette and gathered both his courage and his stoicism. “I received word yesterday that your donation was accepted. I am no longer your liaison.”

His behavior still perplexed her – such news was not enough to partition himself from her completely, as he had for the past week. “I suppose we will see each other at the lab, instead, from now on,” she said.

He nodded in agreement, but he did not look at her.

She remained silent, preoccupying herself with the vision of the sunset, instead. It reminded her of their childhood. 

“If I could, I would spend with you a thousand millennia,” Viktor spoke, suddenly.

Anya looked at him, shocked.

“If I could, I would spend every day with you. And if I could, I would give you a child like yourself. There is nothing I would not do – if it meant I did it with you. But I cannot. I cannot do…any of it.” He still did not look at her, pain gripped him with uneasy talons, and he could not settle himself enough to give her his sight. “It is better, then, that you do not waste your efforts of affection on me.” 

“It is my affection to give,” she said, her voice muddled with sorrow. “It is a gift.”

“There will never be a gift that I can give you in return.” He looked at her, and watched as a tear fell from her face; he meant to spare her pain, not bring it. But he reasoned that a small grief now, would be better than a lasting anguish for the rest of her life. 

Viktor stood, with the aid of his cane, and offered his hand to help her to her feet. She took it – her hand soft and heated with the everlasting blood of her people. He bowed his head, and kissed the tops of her fingers, her warmth leaving a sweetness on his mouth.

“Goodbye, Anya,” he said. 

He left, and in his absence, imparted a shadow of himself into Anya’s heart.

"Police commissioner Perry decided to invite three of the “Revolutionary Socialists” to a secret meeting to get a sense of their intentions. Victor Midgley, Bill Pritchard, and Jack Kavanagh were all stalwarts of the Socialist Party of Canada from British Columbia. Midgley was the union official beaten by veterans during the sympathetic strike in Vancouver the previous August. He was one of the main organizers of the Calgary conference, which named him secretary of the One Big Union central committee. Pritchard joined him on the central committee. With his spectacles and a quiff, he had more the appearance of a mild-mannered school teacher than a longshoreman on the Vancouver waterfront. But Pritchard was a fire-and-brimstone orator who had played a pivotal role planning the Calgary conference, then guiding its debate. He would later serve a year in prison as one of the convicted leaders of the Winnipeg General Strike. Kavanagh, also a longshoreman and newly installed as the president of the BC Federation of Labour, was in charge of the committee that was meant to proselytize in favour of the One Big Union [OBU] in British Columbia.

In the report of the meeting that Perry made to his superiors, he described the trio of Reds as “intelligent, well-read men.” “They are tireless in pursuit of their objects,” he wrote, “and have all the fervour of fanatics.” He did not think they were plotting a violent overthrow of the government, but he feared them nonetheless.

I am not prepared to say that they are aiming at a revolution in the ordinary sense of that word, but I do say that they are influencing a section of labour in the West and unchaining forces which, even if they so desire, some day they will be unable to control. Here is grave danger to the peace and security of the country.

Even so, Perry urged caution. He feared that repressive measures would simply radicalize the more moderate members of the labour movement. Returning to the subject of armed revolution, he observed that “it can only succeed if a considerable number of returned soldiers join the movement.” The Reds knew this and were doing their best to court the veterans. He urged the government, therefore, to promote full employment and whatever other policies it could to placate the grievances of the soldiers.

Another crucial document influencing government thinking about the labour situation was a “Memo on Revolutionary Tendencies in Western Canada” prepared in early April by C.F. Hamilton. Hamilton was a former journalist (he covered the Boer War for the Toronto Globe) and wartime press censor. He had been assistant comptroller of the Mounted Police before the war and rejoined the Mounties afterward as an intelligence officer. He was a highly influential official within the force who reported directly to the commissioner. In his thirteen-page memo, Hamilton argued that there was a small but active band of revolutionaries at work in western Canada attempting to subvert the Canadian government.

Their openly avowed aim is to procure the establishment of a Soviet government, with its concomitants of the disappearance of parliamentary government, the subversion of the rule of the majority, the abolition of private ownership of property, and the destruction of the other institutions upon which society is founded.

Hamilton admitted that armed insurrection seemed unlikely in Canada, but he argued that there were circumstances in which it could occur. The key was the troubled labour situation, he said, and he sketched out a plausible scenario for the “would-be revolutionists.”

What they aim at is an intense conflict between labour and capital, embittered by riots and bloodshed; they calculate on a general dislocation of the industrial system, passing into an uprising of the working classes, probably reinforced by masses of discontented returned soldiers. The whole project turns upon the propagation of bad temper and mutual hate between classes …

Despite his dire prognosis, Hamilton did not believe that direct repression was the correct response. Instead, he called for a campaign of counter-propaganda highlighting the failure of Bolshevism to bring social peace and prosperity to Russia.

As alarmist reports piled up on the desks of senior ministers in Ottawa, the acting prime minister, Sir William Thomas White, panicked. White, a Montreal financier who had won his seat in Parliament in the 1911 election as an opponent of freer trade with the United States and had been rewarded with the finance portfolio in cabinet, was filling in for Prime Minister Borden who was still away at the peace negotiations in Europe. He cabled the absent prime minister in mid-April with the news that Bolshevism was rampant in Canada among soldiers and workers, especially in British Columbia. There was a revolution brewing, White reported, and he wanted Borden to ask the British government to dispatch one of its warships to Vancouver where “the presence of such ship and crew would have steadying influence.” Borden was in Paris hobnobbing with heads of state, making the world safe for democracy. He was impatient at White’s bothering him with what no doubt seemed like petty, and exaggerated, domestic problems. “I would very much like to reply, For Heaven’s Sake, let me alone,” he peevishly confided to his diary. Instead he advised White to do the best he could with the armed forces at his disposal. There would be no request for British help."

IPA and More Keyboard

When I first got into linguistics, I decided I needed a keyboard that could support IPA¹. But I was studying Sanskrit, and switching to a completely different keyboard every time I wanted to add a dot below a character (the common Sanskrit transcription convention) was really annoying! Also, I hate the IPA character for a palatal nasal (ɲ), so I wanted to be able to use 'ñ' instead. And ... a thousand other tiny things, all requiring different keyboard layouts. Why wasn't there a keyboard that just let me type EVERYTHING?

Eventually, I designed my own. And that was fun enough that I expanded it. Over the last 15 years, I've been adding characters and streamlining it's use.

The current iteration is a monster. For an idea of what it can do:

this keyboard can type over 50 diacritics (accent marks)

it can rotate and flip any character that has a rotated/flipped Unicode counterpart, as well as replace them with smallcaps, superscript, and subscript versions

it can type most medieval ligatures and characters (though my research hasn't always been good enough to provide the most natural ways to do so)

it covers the whole IPA, of course, as well as historical symbols, extIPA, and uppercase forms when available

it can type any modern or historical click character available in Unicode (still waiting for Doke orthography support >:( )

it allows you to type Greek and Cyrillic characters (though it prioritizes IPA variants and isn't really streamlined for writing the language)

it allows you to transliterate Sanskrit, Ancient Egyptian, Chinese dialects, etc. that use discipline-specific characters/diacritics

it lets you add bars, tildes, slashes and curls to any character that has a matching Unicode counterpart

it can type most proofing and punctuation marks, modifier characters, as well as

alchemical, astrological, and gender/orientation symbols

Because it's designed to work for a LOT of characters, this keyboard is rarely going to be the simplest way to type a specific one. There are definitely IPA-only keyboards that will be more efficient for typing just IPA. And this keyboard isn't a font. There will be characters that don't show up - I've yet to find one that supports the entire range of characters this keyboard allows. Doulos SIL is my suggested font, especially if you use a lot of diacritics, but you might want to look around to find the one that supports you best.

But it's a powerful tool if you want to be able to switch between multiple transliteration and transcription systems in the same document, explore characters to use for non-human sounds, discuss the history of transcribing language, or quickly type special characters without opening 'insert symbols' dialogue boxes.

This is a Keyman keyboard. You'll need to install Keyman before being able to use it. Keyman is a free program with some amazing keyboards, and a lot of supports for people designing them for underserved languages. I've been really happy with it for almost 20 years, now.

Writing Detached Characters: A Guide to Emotional Numbness

Welcome to the latest instalment in my series on ‘how to write different emotions’. Contrary to the series title, today’s blog will be covering how to write a lack of emotion, or rather, emotional numbness. This is an area many writers covering PTSD, depression, or closed-off characters might be interested in. Thank you anon for the request, and I hope this blog helps you with your writing! 

Understanding the Motive for Emotional Numbness

Emotional numbness can stem from various sources and they all influence a character's behaviour differently. Understanding the root cause of their numbness is crucial to portraying them authentically. 

Trauma-Induced Numbness: Characters closed off due to trauma may appear more disconnected and guarded. Their numbness is a defence mechanism to avoid reliving painful experiences.

Chronic Stress: Prolonged exposure to stress can lead to emotional exhaustion and numbness. These characters might show signs of burnout and a lack of enthusiasm for activities they once enjoyed.

Depression: Characters dealing with depression may exhibit numbness as a symptom. They might struggle with feelings of hopelessness and an inability to experience pleasure.

Each motive ties directly into the character's behaviour, so it’s a good idea to research how numbness varies based on the cause.

How to Showcase Emotional Numbness in Your Writing

When crafting an emotionally numb character, subtlety is key. Here are some ways to show their numbness through various aspects of writing:

Body Language

Closed-off Posture: Crossed arms, avoiding eye contact, slumped shoulders.

Minimal Gestures: Limited use of hand movements, lack of expressive body language.

Tense Muscles: Frequently clenched jaw or fists, indicating suppressed emotions.

Lack of Physical Contact: Avoids hugs, handshakes, or any form of touch.

Facial Expressions

Blank Stare: Eyes that seem to look through people rather than at them.

Neutral Expressions: Rarely smiles or frowns, maintaining a consistently neutral face.

Delayed Reactions: Slow to show any reaction to surprising or emotional events.

Flat Affect: Consistent lack of facial movement or expression regardless of the situation.

Note: remember to not take this too far! This isn’t to say your character doesn’t feel anything at all and will never react to anything but more so that their reactions will be very muted. Yes, they can get happy/surprised, etc. but they won’t have wide grins or loud exclamations of shock. 

Appearance

Plain Wardrobe: Clothes that are simple, unassuming, and devoid of vibrant colours; preferences for baggy/shapeless clothing. 

Neglect of Personal Grooming: Messy hair, unshaven, or generally unkempt appearance.

Monochrome Outfits: Preference for neutral, muted colours like grey, black, and white.

Practical Over Fashionable: Chooses functionality over style, reflecting a lack of interest in appearance.

Dialogue Cues

Monotone Speech: Flat, emotionless tone without inflection.

Brief Responses: Short, to-the-point answers with minimal elaboration.

Avoidance of Personal Topics: Steers conversations away from personal or emotional subjects.

Lack of Expressive Language: Uses simple, direct language without metaphors or descriptive flourishes.

Adjectives and Verbs

Descriptive Words: Detached, apathetic, vacant, stoic, unfeeling, indifferent, withdrawn, impassive, numb, aloof.

Action Words: Avoids, withdraws, dismisses, isolates, ignores, neglects, shuns, evades, suppresses, restrains.

Emotionally Neutral Verbs: Walks, talks, looks, sits (instead of strides, argues, gazes, lounges) listens, observes, reacts, replies, continues.

Subdued Descriptors: Plain, muted, dull, flat, colourless, bland, lifeless, monotonous, reserved, restrained.

Overcoming Emotional Numbness

Since there are several reasons why someone might be emotionally numb, each cause has different ways to overcome it. Here are a few common approaches:

Therapeutic Intervention: Therapy or counselling can help characters address underlying trauma or mental health issues. Techniques like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) are often effective.

Supportive Relationships: Developing a trusting relationship with a friend, family member, or romantic partner can provide the emotional support needed to open up. This would be a better option for a character who has developed numbness due to past relationships and needs to ‘heal’. 

Personal Growth and Self-Discovery: Characters may embark on a journey of self-discovery, engaging in activities or experiences that help them reconnect with their emotions. It would be fun to see a numb character do this with a love interest or close friend. Maybe they’re ‘forced’ to go to an amusement park and the other characters are shocked to see them whoop/yell on one of the rides.
