A Kessurian Mandalorian helmet I was commissioned for. This was a totally clean canvas, as before I’d never even heard of the Kessurians, though they’re definitely one of the most visually striking aliens out there.

The ‘wings’ on Ursa Wren’s helmet slide over the Kessurian’s montrals, and the elongated round earcaps allow for the race’s long ears.

This was a lot of fun to work on, and I’ll revisit it in the future for sure.

Obikin~because we need more Padawan Obi-Wan wanting to top Master Anakin. Obi-Wan seems to be in a bad mood, and Anakin has no idea why.

Not that he considered Obi-Wan a problem. He didn’t. He just thought that his former master might have oversold his Padawan when handing him off to Anakin to finish his training so that Qui-Gon could go on a five-year mission deep in the Outer Rim. Somber and responsible, Qui-Gon had vowed. 

Bantha podoo, Anakin thought. 

“Well,” he tried again, and then he shot an arm out when they turned a corner, grabbing Obi-Wan’s shoulder, saving him from a collision with another Padawan that Anakin vaguely recognized. The Force settled around him, satisfied that he’d been quick to heed the warning. 

“I’m so sorry!” gasped the Kessurian male, jerking to an abrupt stop. In his hands was a holopad that he’d been distractedly reading while he walked. 

“You’re alright,” answered Anakin easily. Beneath his palm, Obi-Wan tensed. 

The bond between them thrummed like a plucked string. 

“T-thank you, Master Skywalker.” The Kessurian stared at him, wide-eyed, and Anakin wearily recognized a fan after fifteen years of being glorified as the face of the GAR. 

“Um, Master Skywalker? Would it be possible to have an Ataru demonstration? Master Jabi claims you’re the best she’s ever se—”

“No, he can’t,” Obi-Wan cut off the other Padawan curtly. “Master, we’re late,” he then announced, and effectively shouldered the Kessurian out of the way.

Eyebrows nearly reaching his hairline, Anakin waved a hasty, somewhat belated goodbye to the Kessurian, and caught up with his Padawan at the door to their apartment. “What was that about?"

Obi-Wan inhaled like he was counting to ten. Remarkably like Mace Windu, at times… “He didn’t want an Ataru demonstration.”

for context before I start, while I generally follow canon over legends, canon has so far failed to return togruta lore back into the fold, and on top of that the novelization of Ahsoka attributed twi'lek biology (multiple stomachs, for the record, which for twi'lek is an adaptation to food scarcity and their extreme omnivorousity) as though it were togruta.

and as a refresh/psa, here are some things to note about togruta and why I call them catfolk:

togruta are obligate carnivores, meaning they can't subsist off of a vegetarian diet; I really like this detail because it leads to fun culture clashes and yet I don't recall if it's ever been utilized in media.

they are ambush pack hunters; traditional togruta color patterns function as camouflage due to their prey having red-green colorblindness (as with real life ungulates); historically the method of finishing prey (severing the spinal cord via a bite to the nape of the neck, a la ferrets) led to a misconception that their fangs were venomous.

the are not the apex predator of shili- togruta were the prey of the akul, a much larger predator that could destroy villages when it hunted; this led to a tradition where togruta would hunt akul as a rite of passage, and the teeth would be fashioned into headdresses like those of Shaak Ti and Ahsoka Tano.

togruta have a natural radar in the form of their horns. montrals, as these are called, are hollow bony structures that both togruta and kessurians have, which allow them to pick up on vibrations in what is referred to as "passive echolocation". basically, imagine if Toph Beifong could detect things in the air or that scene in Far From Home, and that's basically what togruta can naturally sense; this is another thing I don't believe has been properly explored.

there's no hard reference that I know of but etymologically, it's possible that 'togruta' is derived from 'tigrito', a diminutive form of 'tiger' in spanish. granted, while the only similarity being 't_gr_t_' is a stretch, Shaak Ti had a spanish accent in TCW, so there's possibly a connection there?

so from here the information is going to be a bit more speculative, but I hope my reasoning is sound. the main point is based off of a fan infographic highlighting is difference between togruta and twi'lek lekku; namely, that a togruta's lekku are stores of fat for when hunting is poor.

I like this idea because it has a few emergent details as a result.

first, it gives a practical reason for togruta lekku to exist in the first place.

second, having your lipid mass offset makes perfect sense for a prey species because it gives something that can be sacrificed to get away from an akul, like a gecko's tail.

third, it makes for a distinct sexual selector.

what I mean by that is that if togruta lekku store fat, then logically larger lekku means a more skilled hunter that is also able to survive being hunted, which is more desirable on an instinctual level. if this is true, then genetic mutation resulting in naturally larger lekku would be selected for up to a point to which they're a detriment- peafowl feather trains come to mind.

and then you leave the planet or advance in civilization to where you're no longer hunted, removing the evolutionary filter from the equation. and so much like how humans are post-filter (ie why my eyes are so shit), lekku can grow even larger until you have ones like Shaak Ti's knee-length headtails. they're impractical and unwieldy because that's the point, it's more or less a desirable trait that's gone off the rails, like how extremely tall people suffer joint issues.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that by togruta beauty standards, live action Ahsoka is anorexic and Shaak Ti is STACKED.

my togruta brainrot is getting too strong does anyone want to hear me ramble about natural selection and alien beauty standards for what I think is the most unique interpretation of catfolk in fiction

Star Wars Alien Species - Kessurian

Kessur, home of the Kessurians, is a lush and vibrant world home to vast forests and deep valleys. The planet is dotted with city-states and nations, creating one of the more dynamic worlds in The Mid Rim.

The Kessurian species possessed a monarchy, with the second in line to the throne given the title of thilas.

Wilsa Teshlo was a Kessurian thilas, second in line to the throne, but refused to be trapped in the life of royalty, and fled to join the Veiled Sorority pirate gang.

Kessurians were a humanoid sentient species. They had typically red skin, elongated and pointed ears, and hornlike montrals above their ears. Their hair was typically brown. They also had rounded nubs above their eyes and below their montrals. The skin on their ears, montrals, cheeks and foreheads was mottled with lighter spots than the rest of their skin. Kessurians had four limbs, two arms and two legs, and five-fingered hands. The species had at least two sexes: male and female. Male Kessurians could grow facial hair. Some members of the species possessed Force sensitivity.

Kessurians age at the following stages:

1 - 10 Child

11 - 17 Young Adult

18 - 44 Adult

45 - 69 Middle Age

70 - 84 Old

Examples of Names: Charlu Sisi, Estala Maru, Sylphanie Stil, Vanbec Recliva, Wilsa Teshlo.

Languages: Kessurians speak their own native language of Kessurian, with a simplistic and practical structure. Most learn Basic to converse with offworlders, and Kessurians from higher castes also learn High Galactic.
