The Great Miss Lydia Becker
Long before the Daily Mail coined the term “suffragette” in 1906, women campaigned for equality, including the amateur scientist Lydia Becker. Despite establishing a centre for the suffrage movement in Manchester and founding the Women’s Suffrage Journal, Becker does not get nearly as much praise as the women who followed in her wake, such as Emmeline Pankhurst and Millicent Fawcett. Lydia…

Good Omens filming locations masterpost! ❤ 🐍😊 Part 3
(here to part 1 :))
(here to part 2 :))
Here to the map :)
S2 London (cont):
C rushing to A after Beelzebub's visit (S02E01) - Regent Street St James's, London
Tumblr media
Scene: Crowley rushing to Aziraphale after Beelzebub told with that anyone who will be find helping Gabriel will be dealt with extreme sanctions
Availability (as of 2024): street all day
Link on the map
BONUS:
The 1990 book promo photo - Kensal Green Cemetery, London
Tumblr media
The photo with Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman that appeared on the 1990 back cover of Good Omens was taken in February 1990 in Kensal Green Cemetery. After the photo was taken and developed they noticed the winged hourglasses and used it as a design motif for the book. The mausoleum is the Hugh mausoleum of Baron John Frederick Andrew Huth, a banker that died 1864.
Availability (as of 2024):
The cemetery is open cca 9-17 but it good to check the opening times on their page since the two entrances slightly differs and times also differ on Sundays and bank holidays.
The mausoleum can be seen from the cemetery path but to get close to it you have to go through overgrown grass and a bit of bramble.
If you go, check if the one of the smol fygo gifts are still there :) ❤ .

Whew! This masterpost took me several weeks, hope you enjoyed it and it might help you plan your trip to see the Good Omens places! :) ❤ 🐍😊 Wahoo! :)

@azirafellfirst
Yesterday morning, we visited Kensal Green cemetery, where the book cover picture with Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman was taken. Thank you to @fuckyeahgoodomens for the guide.
Coincidentally, we entered the cemetery through the East Gate
Tumblr media
It's very old and a bit chaotic
Tumblr media
The mausoleum in question is a bit hidden. If you want to visit, you have to walk up in the direction of the crematorium
Tumblr media
And then look to the right. This is the view from the footpath:
Tumblr media
And there we are:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Someone left flowers
Tumblr media
They had cut the grass and bushes, so sadly there were no more pencils hidden in the tree.
On our way to the bus station, we were informed by a very enthusiastic man that this cemetery was also the place where Freddie Mercury was cremated but people keep stealing the plaque.

I was gifted tickets for the Ocean at the End of the Lane play by my thoughtful partner, and promptly decided I was going to make the most of it organizing my very own Neil Gaiman Tour of London. I’ve been wanting to visit some of the magnificent sevens for ages - so it was two birds with one headstone, really.
It first took a little bit of poking around Kensal Green cemetery to find the JF Huth mausoleum, where the iconic picture with Terry and Neil was taken - its carvings used for the book and show. Lots of stone angels in that graveyard, but also, charmingly, some snakes. If you ever want to find the mausoleum.

Then we payed our respects to Soho and Berwick Street staring both in Good Omens (kind of) and Neverwhere, before heading to the theater. The play was, needless to say, utterly beautiful. As were the adaptation choices : the books the boy reads - echoes of his own story, how they took the fantastic flea to life, how they made the father-son relationship even more central to the narrative.

Under an unlikely bright november sun (vampires sadly weren’t seen), we went to both sides of Highgate cemetery, because of the Graveyard Book : "The graveyard in The Graveyard Book was built up equally from Highgate Cemetery West, Abney Park in Stoke Newington, and a little bit from Glasgow Necropolis." NG.

And finally we went to Battersea to have a sandwich in front of the iconic Good Omens bandstand. From an old stone bridge we watched the night turns the Thames black, without being eaten by the darkness ourselves - as it apparently only happens in the London Below. We walked almost 13 km that day, or more accurately, 8 miles.

I’ve crossed the channel countless times and I will keep on doing it because there’s still so much to discover in this huge, old, wonderful city.

I was on holiday in London this week, and one afternoon I went to Kensal Green cemetery. So here’s James Ross’s grave.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lady Jane Franklin and Sophia Cracroft’s grave.
Tumblr media
Robert McClure’s grave. The inscription has faded so much that I could only tell it was his by tracing the letters with my finger.
If you’re ever in London and you’ve already done Highgate, I definitely recommend the Victorian section of Kensal for a visit. Bring good shoes - there aren’t many paths. It rained whilst I was on the tube there and the ground was so wet that I got mud on my jeans up to my knees! McClure’s grave was surrounded by nettles and thorns and I had to clear away some of them with the brim of my cap. It’s a bit daft, seeing as I’m an atheist, but when I was at Lady Jane’s grave I told her that I would help to bring her husband home and that I hoped our plan will be approved and that he can be buried with her.

I’ve been watching Lockwood & co. and I actually live near the cemetery they visit in episode 4. Fun fact, Kensal Green cemetery is the same one that Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett took their author photo at for Good Omens
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s me recreating their photo! I’ve had lots of walks in that cemetery and thankfully have never seen any ghosts

I love how this episode gets to some fundamentals of Lockwood's character and how they are often so contradictory. He's stylish, posh and urbane and yet also an absolute dork and a nerd. He can be charming but also can be insufferable. He's very intellectual and has a good analytic mind but then instead of doing the logical thing he decides to play dress up or throws bombs at the problem. His brain has not finished developing but he owns a house and a business. He's one of those adolescent German Shepherds with huge paws and ears that the rest of the body hasn't grown into. He's still cooking.
There were two things I kinda wanted to throw into your discussion:
1) when did Gravedigger Sykes die? Because it seems like Lockwood lost him recently. Like, not a full year from interviewing Lucy, maybe six months? The timeline is wonky but the agency by that point has only been around 3 months and Lockwood probably started it after losing Sykes as a mentor. I think it adds to why he's not ok talking about him.
2) another is that while Lockwood has a huge vendetta against ghosts (for obvious reasons) he is generally very forgiving of people. He is pissed at Lucy when she admitted to snooping in Jessica's room but he tells her to walk through some slime and calls it even. He doesn't let the grudge fester. It's already in the past. And the past doesn't matter. And you might say "well he's in love with Lucy" and he is, but in the later books he also similarly forgives Kipps very quickly, faster than anyone. When Kipps was truly cruel to him many times and actively tried to ruin the agency he worked so hard to build. I think that's kind of extraordinary as a quality for an otherwise absolute emotional mess of a teenager.
Tumblr media
It’s Boxing Day in the UK, St. Stephen’s Day in Ireland, and December 26th in the US, and there’s no way we’d rather spend it than discussing the beloved namesake of our series — the one and only Anthony J. Lockwood, Esq.!
For our third episode of Haunting the Narrative, we’re going to be digging into all things Lockwood. We’ll talk about his dark backstory and how that links to the core traits and motivations we see him display. We'll discuss his ambition, his relationship to his family, and his own search for meaning throughout the books.
Somehow this is our shortest episode yet, which is nothing short of a Christmas miracle.
