People are too harsh about Kennedy from btvs. I have nothing but respect for the fact that her watcher was brutally killed just days or weeks ago, her life is under threat from relentless forces she's borderline defenseless against, new town, knows no one but she's in Buffy's house, Willow pings her gaydar and she immediately devotes herself to tryna hit. Everything else is chaotic and horrible and traumatizing but that DOESN'T stop her, she approaches every interaction with a single minded conviction to make SURE Willow knows she's down to fuck and GOD what a triumph of the human spirit, y'know? What dedication to lesbian pursuits, in the face of utter bleakness. She's an inspiration

something that annoys me so hardcore about willow and kennedys relationship is that they actually worked well!! their relationship couldve been so interesting! except for the fact that the used their relationship to vacuum over tara so aggressively, it hurts their relationship so hard. the actors had actual good chemistry, and their storyline couldve been cute, but it was so overwhelmingly ignoring all the real actual pain willow would still have been feeling over the death of tara.

I think I would dislike willow and kennedy's relationship less if Tara didn't die if that makes sense? Like her death set off the series of events for the finale. It's obviously a big deal in the show. Willow killed two people and was ready to end it all for everybody over this woman. She went full villain. I think with a reaction as explosive as that I expected more fallout. Sure there was that one episode when she turned into Warren and the episode she first comes back to sunnydale. But both of those felt more about her guilt at having killed and hurt people than her grief over Tara. I think if Tara had somehow survived and her and Willow just broke up, But Willow and kennedy's relationship and the episodes I mentioned were left as is, The relationship might have gone over better for me.

So I just read a quote from Joss saying Kennedy was designed to be the “anti-Tara” and I just… Joss you already tried to do that with Riley — literally, he is called the “anti-Angel” — and it went over very badly. Why would you do that again??? Especially when this time it makes no sense for the character and adds nothing to the narrative, because the way in which she is anti is Tara was quiet, emotionally mature, and compassionate, whereas Kennedy is an immature self-described brat who has no respect for Willow’s boundaries.

I’ve not quite reached season 7 of my buffywatch but I’m curious to know your thoughts on Kennedy (yes I’m not there yet but I was spoiled on some of the beats of the season). It seems like what I can gather the consensus is that she’s a bitch but like she’s hardly alone in that. Is there something more meaningful that wouldve turned people off and what do you think of her?
I don't think I had in-depth thoughts about it, then or now, but I don't fall with the rest of the fandom on this. Out of all the potentials, I definitely liked Kennedy best, for one. She had the more distinctive, conflict-arising personality out of the lot, which is probably part of the reason she rubbed the fandom the wrong way. But as the meme goes, joke's on you, I'm into that shit.
Though the biggest reason she stuck out was surely her relationship with Willow, which... I get, in part (season 6's ending is very recent), but I also side-eye in some cases (some comments I saw back in the day had that good ol' homophobic stench lol. That's the problem with disliking any kind of less-than-completely-normative ship, there will always be bigots that agree with you lmao).
I also diverge from fandom in this. Kennedy/Willow is hardly my OTP, and if I had been the one put in charge of Willow's romance that season I might've chosen instead to go with an already established, uneasy dynamic (Faith, or Amy. Maybe Anya lmao), which is catnip to me.
But, although it's been a while since I watched it and the execution probably wasn't as perfect as it could've been, I think they made it work, especially as it was a ~last minute pairing. The show wasn't trying to sell it as the grandest of grand romances, or dismissing what Tara and Willow had and what Tara meant to her. It was about offering Willow... the future, if that makes sense? It was about showing things didn't have to end after such a tragedy. There could be light and joy and fun moving forward.
Also like. You gotta give Kennedy props. Her life is in shambles but she spies a Troubled Lesbian around and immediately shoots her shot? Respect.

Kennedy hate doesn't stem solely from her relationship with Willow. Just wait until the final episodes of the season (being vague to avoid giving spoilers lol).
So I have now finished the series and I'm not saying I couldn't possibly see where the Kennedy dislike comes from but I still don't think the vitriol I've seen is justified.
Look, she's clearly not the greatest character or anything. I get that her attitude can be frustrating and, as the most fleshed-out Potential she also represents everything wrong with the Potentials, mostly them being annoying and ungrateful towards Buffy. But Kennedy is... okay. The mutiny scene, which I'm assuming you were referring to wasn't enough to make me despise the character or even understand that level of deep hatred. Again, I can understand people not vibing with the attitude but she's not that bratty.
And I've seen people twist her relationship with Willow into something it simply wasn't (predatory, mainly) and that just so doesn't sit well with me. It's not like I'm going to become a Kennedy defender, I've already chosen a hill to die on and it's stanning season 6. But I also feel like the fandom makes her out to be something she wasn't and a huge part of that is that she dared to be Willow's love interest after Tara's death. I maintain that I liked her in 7x13. And like, sorry, but the sex scene was good. I said what I said. Maybe the hate doesn't stem solely from it and I'm with people on the Potentials being lowkey annoying at best, but Kennedy really isn't deserving of being voted the worst character and such. Have said that before and saying it now that I've seen all of BtVS.

the kennedy defender has logged on btw.
she's a GOOD character, okay? she's a little spoiled and sometimes doesn't read the room. kind of arrogant and maybe prone to a power trip here and there. so?
she's also STUPID brave, which i love. even as an unpowered potential she is willing (and 9 times out of 10 the absolute first) to throw herself headlong into danger at the first opportunity. even in episodes like showtime, when buffy is struggling in a fight, kennedy's first instinct is to leap in and help. she might be a little bossy with some of the other girls, but she DOES try to to protect them every single time there's a fight and they clearly like her - when kennedy is hurt or in danger, the other girls respond.
chloe's suicide is absolutely not kennedy's fault - if the show really wanted you to think that was the case, they would have made more of a point of it. even buffy, who is a pretty frequent target of kennedy's criticism, assures her that it wasn't her harsh words during training that lead to chloe's death - it was the fact that she was scared and vulnerable and the First (the thing that is really, really good at making people kill themselves) was whispering in her ear alll night about how cool it would be to die.
kennedy's a bit harsh with buffy but to be fair none of the potentials were really feeling great about buffy's leadership at the point in the season where we had the most conflict. and from there perspective, it's actually pretty sympathetic. they were scared to fight, didn't feel ready, buffy had been harsh with them to toughen them up and then a bunch of their friends were brutally slaughtered or maimed in front of them while buffy got her ass handed to her and they were all promised more of the same. a bit of discontent, a bit of panic, a bit of mutiny - not unexpected! (not looking to litigate though, it was dumb conflict tbf)
she was good to willow! a little forward, but she never pushed willow into anything she didn't want to do. even after willow turned into warren post-kiss, kennedy didn't freak out and abandon her. she stuck with her through a lot of freaky magic shit and emotionally volatility and looked down the barrel of a GUN for her - AS DOWN BAD AS IT'S HUMANLY POSSIBLE TO BE. even after getting a little freaked out with the magical draining that happened later, she got over it pretty quickly. she's patient and understanding when willow has reservations about sleeping together for the first time, gives the cute little kite string speech (if you can't learn to adopt willow's metaphors during conversation, you don't deserve her).
genuinely i think she's a good character. i wish there had been more room in the season to characterize her more gradually, but for the amount of hate i've seen her get over the years, i just don't think she's that bad.
also she has a tongue stud and who could hate that.
ALSO being a teenage mexican-american lesbian and seeing bisexual mexican-american actress iyari limon on screen licking alyson hannigan's neck with that very tongue stud TRULY unlocked things for me that nothing else could have. cannot stress that enough.
