In the Third Sleep, Kay Sage, 1944, Art Institute of Chicago: American Art

Kay Sage, an American expatriate living in Paris, first encountered Surrealism at the 1938 Exposition internationale du surréalisme and was tremendously inspired by the works of Giorgio de Chirico. After becoming involved with the French artist Yves Tanguy, whom she married in 1940, she became a member of the circle of Surrealists that formed around André Breton. In the Third Sleep depicts a large bipartite shape resembling drapery, which improbably rises straight up into the air from a ramplike structure that crosses an otherwise barren landscape. The striking composition suggests the mystifying forms and spaces of dream worlds, reflecting the Surrealists’ fascination with the unconscious. Friends of American Art Collection; Watson F. Kay Sage

The Surrealist artist Kay Sage was born into a well-established family in upstate New York. In 1920, Sage attended art school in Italy and she married Prince Ranieri di San Faustino. However she had limited time to paint. Through meeting and encouragement of American poet Ezra Pound and German sculptor Heinz Henghes, she revisited painting, but this time in abstraction. 

In 1937, after divorcing, Sage moved to Paris and became involved with the European Surrealists. The following year she met the French Surrealist and future husband Yves Tanguy, whose work affected her greatly. During World War II she formed "The Society for Preservation of European Culture" to organize exhibitions in the U.S. in her goal to secure safe passage for artists to New York. 

Sage’s unique style combined architectural forms, complex scaffolding and post-apocalyptic structures against backgrounds of vast and endless horizons. She depicted biomorphic forms composed of drapery juxtaposed with geometric figurations, sharply contrasting darkness and light and evoking feelings of intense stillness and mystery. Her work ‘I Saw Three Cities’ is at once realistic and mysterious. Presiding over the haunting, abandoned.
