My dreamcore looks like a freaking nightmare

A World-Shattering, but Welcome Change.

Cheap coffee, nicotine, fake leather, and rain. Those were the only things I could smell all the way up here. Pulling my jacket tighter around me with one hand, I took a long drag from the cigarette between my fingers. Rain pattered against the awning above me, and below I could see cars driving in the crowded, neon-lit streets. My mind was clouded but clear, racing but calm. It perfectly matched the week I'd been having. One giant fucking oxymoron.

I watched AVs wind between the skyscrapers as I tried to piece it all together. How could one person's life be turned upside down so quickly? So suddenly, my life went from corporate wage-slave to running from the law and leaving everything behind. I ran from my home and within a week I was somewhere new, somewhere drowned in neon and death. Night City.

Taking one last drag from the disgusting stick in my mouth, I flicked the remains over the edge of the roof and sat back on my hands. The rain started to come down harder, almost like it was copying my mood. I tried my best to recall everything that'd happened back home, but most of it was a blur. Most of what I could piece together was gunshots and someone barking commands at whoever would listen. I remember my hands wrapping around the handle of a gun and firing it, but not at who or why. There was one detail that was clear in my head, though. I had chosen that way out. I chose to pick up a gun and do what I did. I chose to lose everything and run.

The kicker was I didn't know why.

I had thought I was happy. I had just gotten a raise, I was moving into a new place, hell, I was even about to get a promotion. But in that moment of panic, something in me made the decision to leave it all behind. Something in me made the decision to end someone's life.

Pushing myself to my feet, I grabbed my to-go cup that sat beside me, steam still rising from it, and brought it to my lips. It burns my tongue a little, but I welcomed the sensation. It felt like it grounded me in that moment as I finally took in the Night City skyline. I pulled my hood up and tuned my media player into Night City Radio. Slowly, I stepped out from the awning and into the rain, now feeling the weight of the gun holstered under my left arm. As the rain hit my skin, it felt like suddenly everything was clear.

The past was the past, and today was all I had left. With a deep breath, I turned toward the stairwell, a small, but noticeable bit of newfound determination in my eyes. It was then, I decided how I would live from then on.

Yesterday is gone, tomorrow isn't promised, so all you can do is live for today.
