No One Does It Like You by Katie Shepard ~ Book Excerpt
NO ONE DOES IT LIKE YOU BOOK EXCERPT A CONTEMPORARY WOMEN’S FICTION NOVEL College sweethearts reunite to restore more than just an old inn in No One Does It Like You by Katie Shepard, author of Sweeten the Deal. Book Review: No One Does It Like You by Katie Shepard
No One Does It Like You is a second chance romance that throws two college sweethearts, Tom and Rosie, into forced proximity at her family's hurricane-weathered B&B in Martha's Vineyard after they've been divorced for ten years. He's desperate to win her back, as evidenced by the meandering voicemail he leaves on her phone where he tells her he still loves her and would do anything for her. She's on the fence. Still reeling with with hurt, distrust, and skepticism. However, she gives him an opportunity to prove himself by asking if he'll help her renovate the B&B.
Can they repair the shingles of their crumbling relationship as seamlessly as they can repair the roof?
This had its cute moments, but I found I had trouble suspending belief in places. I still don't buy into the circumstances around Tom and Rosie's initial break up. It fell flat. I did like some of the quirky additions, though. Like the walls being infested with bees, Boyd careening on the roof in the middle of a thunderstorm, and the fandom girlies showing up on the B&B property. A decent pick for those looking for something light and carefree to close out the summer.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for the ARC in exchange for my review.
3/5 stars

When Broadway actor Tom Wilczewski is about to jump into raging waters during a category 3 hurricane to save his co-lead, he calls his ex-wife and leaves her a message telling her he regrets their divorce and still loves her. Two months later Rose Kelly is in a bad place and hear’s Tom’s message for the first time. She reaches out and asks for his help to revitalize her family’s B&B in Martha’s Vineyard and Tom, hoping for a reunion agree’s. What she doesn’t count on is for the rest of his Broadway cast to show up and help. Rose and Tom’s relationship ended because of a lack of communication and they were only 22 years old. Way too young to figure out that they needed to fight for their marriage instead of just give up. 10 years later, Tom is still acting and in his first big Broadway role, yet he doesn’t hesitate to rush to Rose’s side to provide whatever help he can give. In the telling of this story we learn quite a bit about their dynamics as a couple and what went wrong, and what I loved about that telling is that with more adult eyes, the things that were so important at 22 were not as important at 32. It’s the message behind trying to make things work that, well, made this kind of awkward novel work too. There was a fun sub-plot to this story about Tom being romantically involved with his male co-lead, Boyd, who’s actually a very well known actor. The reality is a bit different that what’s playing out in the gossip rags, but Tom is actually bi-sexual, as he was when he and Rose met. This sub-plot was a bit of mis-direction but also had a lot of charm and brought a sense of lightness to what could have been a kind of serious novel about second chances. A lot of that had to do with Boyd, his not very bright decision making, and his pack of groupies. I was never sure where the scene would lead when Boyd entered the page, but I always looked forward to it. This novel wasn’t perfect. Tom and Rose’s second chance was filled with a lot of doubt and gray areas that sometimes made their character’s decisions kind of hard to follow. I loved Tom’s fortitude in wanting to win Rose back despite all of her hesitations. He was all in, and because of that I was all in too. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I received a copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review and it was honest. Sweeten The Deal - Katie Shepard
"MBA student Caroline Sedlacek knows her personal balance sheet is a little lopsided. On the asset side, at twenty-two she’s got an NCAA trophy, a great education...and the two million dollars she unexpectedly inherited. Liabilities? She's never had friends, a boyfriend, or any life experiences away from the tennis court or the classroom. She'd love to invest herself in everything else, but "everything else" never came easily for her.
In the ten years since he left art school as a vaunted prodigy, Adrian Landry has won shows and major prizes—and done his best to shed his reputation as a pretty man who makes pretty paintings. Though currently broke and sleeping off a bad break-up on his college roommate’s couch, he knows this is the chance to get his life back on track at thirty-three—he just needs the money to find a new gallery.
When Adrian’s roommate lists him on a thinly veiled escort site, Caroline is not the patron he expected. She’s way too young, way too naive, and loudly uninterested in having sex with him. Instead, they’re both going to get exactly what they want: a little culture on her side, and a lot of cash on his. Aside from their sugar baby arrangement, they’ve got nothing in common. But as they reel from the symphony to the Haymarket, they learn that what they want and what they need might be two very different things."
Read Date - July 2024
Length - 384 pages
Genre - Romance, Chick Lit, New Adult
Rating - 8/10
Stars - ★★★★☆
Notes - The concept of Adrien becoming a sugar baby is SO INTERESTING because you usually only hear about it from the women's perspective. Swapping the gender roles here is beautifully done and I adore it. Obviously I haven’t gotten too far in the book yet, but I feel like Caroline is so Autistic Coded like that girl is ME. I don’t care if it’s not canon, this is an autistic girlie pop. I think Tom and Adrien’s friendship is cute, and the way they look out for each other is nice. I love how Caroline is clueless, and honestly is just really good autistic representation in my (autistic) opinion. Like, the sushi scene specifically was such a cute example of autism that doesn’t include meltdowns, and I loved how they talked about all the different colors and textures of the sushi were described, and the way she’s physically unable to finish the sushi. I like that Adrien keeps trying to get Caroline to go out and interact more in the world with people that aren’t just him and Tom. Caroline and Adrien together are such a cute and hot duo, i genuinely can’t get enough of them. The hatred that her family brings is an interesting dynamic, because not a lot of people talk about the resentment and ableist thrown around so carelessly. The spice in this book is so well played out and I’ve never liked it more. And in chapter 12, Tom mentions that he believes that Caroline is neurodivergent. GIRL ME TOO!!! I THINK THAT SHIT TOO!! THATS MY AUTISTIC QUEEN!! and my LORD was the representation FANTASTIC!! Sometimes, the best part of coding a character as autistic instead of writing them as autistic is that you arent confined to certail social pressures that are expected when writing an autistic character. You’re able to write them more realistic as a result of coding them, and i think its perfect here. Adrien’s friends being piece of shit assholes actually makes sense when you consider the fact that Adrien himself used to be a snob. They’re also upset over the break up, which doesn’t justify anything but makes it make sense. Their first kiss was so passionate and it make my stomach do little flips like hello!!! The declaration of love was also so sweet. He supports her during the ‘othering’ of the people which was a realistic thing to talk about. Again, the spice and smut in this book is so well done, and i loved every moment. It was so sensual and sweet and delicious. I think it’s even better knowing Caroline is meant to be a neurodivergent person, because it shows that even we can have sex lives and be active. The drama that happens in this book is also so good, and as someone who just enjoys drama, it was also perfect. The conversation with Caroline’s family was tense as fuck and hard to listen to when they’re sitting there verbally harassing her for her money. Adrien trying to sell his portraits as a struggling artist is interesting to hear, with Adriens love of Caroline being intertwined with it. The “big bad” of Adrien viewing their relationship as a bad thing was another realistic plot point, and i generally adore their relationship. The choice of moving in together is very sweet and it’s amazing. They deserve each other and it’s been awhile since I’ve felt this way about a book. I think it was perfect and i recommend it to everyone, and i think it’s perfect representation without even outwardly saying it. This was a really really good book.

So I needed a couple of days to recover, but witnessing Merrily's closing show on Sunday was simply amazing and so special.
The entire week people had gasped when they heard I was seeing the closing show haha, and even when queueing at the theatre, there were multiple people still looking for tickets. I felt so fortunate to be holding on to one - as well as that I bought it before the Tony's because those prices skyrocketed.
As soon as the overture started, people started applauding loudly, and once more before the overture had ended. Everyone clearly felt lucky to be in the room where it happens 😉. Jonathan obviously got a loud applause as he entered the stage, and so did Daniel and Lindsay, Katie Rose and honestly all cast members (as they deserve!)
After Franklin Shepard Inc Daniel got a standing ovation that lasted minutes, and completely broke down in tears. Throughout the show there were many standing ovations, after which the cast had to clearly wait to continue. The show without speeches lasted about 3 hours because of that. Jonathan kept it together quite well throughout the show and was mostly in tears during It's a hit, for which someone at the stage door airdropped me those pictures above. And having to start singing " our time" Jonathan was clearly in tears and kept looking upstage at Daniel. When he finally got his words out, Daniel's voice kept cracking and so also he got emotional.
After the official bows everyone got on stage including Sonia and Maria Friedman, stage management, musicians, dressers etc. You can find the speeches online, they mostly focused on the authentic love in the company and how they were never going to experience something as good again. Both everyone on stage as everyone in the audience was in tears. Especially when Sonia Friedman told Maria Friedman that their parents who are no longer with them, would be so proud of her. And that the last thing Stephan Sondheim did was cast Daniel for this show. Jonathan, Daniel and Lindsay were holding on to each other tightly the entire time and Jon placed some kisses atop of Daniels head which just looked to cute. It was clear they were taking a lot of comfort in one another.
During the speeches they also mentioned that it wouldn't take to long to watch this company do this show again, but in a different format, alluding to the proshot.
The next day I walked by the Hudson theatre and they were already clearing it out. I filmed walking by, but it is mostly tech and a small glimpse of the inside of the theatre that you can see.
All in all, it was an incredible experience to have witnessed this closing show and have gotten to see it at the new york theatre workshop from only a couple of meters away! Obviously the show is amazing! And it is such a joy and privilege to get to see Jonathan exude his happy theatre kid-energy live on stage.

I read something along this vein in a romcom recently, and I want to do a Lil shakarian drabble with it. ((It's probably not going in turn left, but maybe that heist fic I'm planning)) ((the book is you again by Katie Goldbeck btw)) please enjoy
The space between Shepard and Garrus was shrinking faster than her common sense and her ability to think and act in a productive manner. She noticed the tiny things about him she's only dared to peek at before-- the way his eyes caught the light overhead of them, the way his mandibles dripped down his jaw like water on a windowsill, the way his subvocals grumbled deep within his chest.
"You're getting awfully close there..." she managed to whisper out, because if she tried to talk any louder she was sure her voice would shake.
"I am."
"Are you..." her voice failed her. She cleared her throat. He was so close she could take a deep breath and touch his carapace. "Are you going to kiss me?"
"Yes."
"It's-- it's just going to be a quick kiss? A little peck? Something casual like that?"
"No."
"And we're just going to be friends afterwards, yeah?" Shepard asked desperately, trying to justify everything that her body was screaming at her to do. "Because that's a thing that friends do sometimes, right?"
"It's not."
"Can you say anything other than monosyllables?" She gave one last effort to stop what was about to happen; not because she didn't want it, of course, but because she was terrified on what the other side will look like.
Garrus just brought a hand up to her cheek, his thumb brushing over her lip. He looked intently at it, as if it was his very first time ever seeing a human before.
"Will you shut up already?" He half whispered, half laughed, half pleaded.

Excerpts from Daniel Radcliffe's interview with the New York Times on 30 April.
Daniel Radcliffe caught the first batch of Tony nominations during the announcement at 8:30 a.m. He texted congratulations to his “Merrily We Roll Along” co-star Jonathan Groff, who was nominated for best actor in a musical.
But then dad duty called before his own category, featured actor in a musical, was announced at 9:00.
“I was in the middle of doing breakfast and trying to put my son down for his morning nap, so I got a text from a member of the cast letting me know I was nominated,” said the actor, 34, who stars as the lyricist and playwright Charley Kringas in the acclaimed revival of the 1981 Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical, “Merrily We Roll Along.”
Radcliffe’s Tony nomination — for his fifth Broadway role since his 2008 debut in “Equus” — is the first of his career. And it’s extra special, he said in a phone conversation from his New York apartment on Tuesday, because not only Groff, but his other “Merrily” co-star, Lindsay Mendez, was also nominated, for featured actress.
“People in your line of work probably get bored of actors talking about how much they love each other, how much they enjoy working with each other,” said Radcliffe, who is best known for playing Harry Potter onscreen. “And we do say it a lot, but this group is really awesome — Lindsay, Jonathan, the whole cast. I feel so lucky.”
You recently were the ring bearer at Lindsay’s wedding, for which Jonathan served as the officiant. How did that come about?
It’s what I do in the show — when Jonathan and Katie Rose Clarke are getting married, I’m the ring bearer. So we were in Lindsay’s dressing room on the Saturday or Sunday before she got married, and she just offhandedly was like, “Would you be the ring bearer?” We found that funny. So I did! But also I suddenly went from going to a wedding with zero responsibilities to going and having to not screw something up; to not drop the rings and suddenly have them flying around Central Park! But it was fine.
All three of you have been with the show since its Off Broadway run in 2022. How has your performance grown and changed?
When we first met, we were getting on really well, but we were still getting to know each other, so we were having to act the friendship more. And now so much of it is just there. That’s not a feeling you get all the time as an actor. It’s rare, and I feel very lucky that I just have to look into Jonathan’s eyes or Lindsay’s eyes and get everything I need to get through whatever moment we’re doing.
What initially attracted you to the “Merrily” role?
When I saw this production in London, I had the reaction of going, “Oh, I’m really right for this part.” I could hear my voice in the character pretty early on. I love musical theater, but it’s not something I’ve done my whole life the way Jonathan and Lindsay have, so the vocal aspects and the musical aspects are the stuff I’ve really enjoyed, especially when the music is as incredible as Sondheim’s. “Franklin Shepard” in particular was pretty challenging to learn initially. But now that it’s in me, it’s incredibly fun.
There’s no challenge in musical theater like a Sondheim patter song.
The first few times I was doing it, it was genuinely terrifying. The one time Off Broadway where it kind of went wrong was one of the most terrifying things that’s ever happened to me onstage.
What happened?
I got ahead of the band by like half a beat, so I was out of sync with them for — it felt like 30 seconds, but it was probably less. Thankfully there are enough musical things happening in that song that I recognized one of them and was able to reorient myself.
Who is the person you’ve been most nervous to have come see the show?
Meryl Streep was in the audience one night, and I was very thrilled to find that out after the show was finished.
