A #Tudor Gem in #Winchcombe A thousand-year-old building with a dead #queen inside I wonder what #KatherineParr, #HenryVIII’s sixth and surviving wife, would have made of what people get up to on the grounds of #SudeleyCastle nowadays. Her former abode is a favourite of dog-walkers, outdoor games enthusiasts, and Boxing Day, post-prandial, impromptu ramblers. My party belongs to the latter group. This is a far cry from what this Grade I-listed castle, situated close to the medieval market town of Winchcombe, in Gloucestershire, is famous for. A curious fact that I only found out about recently is that Sudeley is the only privately owned castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds, the aforementioned Katherine. Another interesting piece of information, and one I will certainly check out when I’m next here, is that a cannonball-shaped hole remains on the side of Octagon Tower. A souvenir from the English Civil War. Don’t thank me, thank Ollie and his Ironsides. With a colder temperature than on previous days but still mild for this time of the year, we turn around and head back. Maybe a spring trip beckons, if only to pay a visit to the Queen’s Garden, where over seventy varieties of roses can be enjoyed. Just finished reading a book on Catherine Parr by Don Matzat. Parr was the last wife of Henry VIII and managed to keep her head. Her favourite color was crimson and even her toilet was crimson.

After Henry VIII died, she married Thomas Seymour, who was a p who was hitting on Princess Elizabeth (Elizabeth I) when she was a child. He was desperate for power. Parr died during childbirth and so did her child. Thomas attempted to kidnap King Edward, stupid idea, he lost his head.

This was a great book to read. Interesting, and gets to the point.

I haven’t been posting a picture from England for quite a while so I thought today I would do just that. The photo was taken at Sudeley Castle and Gardens two years ago in June, but it was a very gray, cool, and rainy day and the atmosphere suits an early autumn day like we have today, I think. I love this view towards the chapel of St. Mary in the background surrounded by the beautiful castle gardens. Besides its architectural beauty the chapel is very special because Katherine Parr, the last of the six wives, of King Henry VIII, is buried here. Sudeley Castle is notable for being the only private castle to have a queen buried on its grounds. Went to see @sixthemusical in the Vaudeville Theatre last Saturday and it was sooo good! I got to see it with my sib sib @themagickalkat and it just made this theatre trip so much better! This was my first time seeing it since I saw it with the OG cast in the London Arts Theatre and this cast was just as good and we were lucky to see a super swing perform because the one playing Jane Seymour fell ill midway through the show, at least we got see both Jane actresses perform which is all that matters!
