Lizzie’s videos amount to 100 episodes + 10 Q&A, but shorter series enrich the story by offering other characters’ perspectives, most notably Lydia’s (and also Georgiana’s). A playlist at Pemberley Digital’s Youtube channel features them all in order.

The series has also been adapted into a book, The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet (2014), and spawned a sequel novel, The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet (2015).

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016 Film)

Loose adaption inspired by the 2009 novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, which adds zombies to Austen’s original story. The movie makes alterations from the zombie book as well.

Features 100 episodes in the International cut. The telenovela has been broadcast in other countries and languages (such as Spanish) but as far as I know, not in English.

I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while it’s been a while since I’ve seen Bride and Prejudice, it’s got Indian musical numbers so c’mon, one gotta watch it.

Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.

In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe that’s cause I’m a sucker for P&P.

Chosen Family

Summary: After Dan comes out at fifteen, his parents don't pay him any mind. At sixteen, when he goes to his first pride, he meets Kath Lester. She becomes like a mother to him, and when his boyfriend hurts him, he goes to her for help. He wasn't aware that he would finally meet her youngest son, nor that Phil would be someone so special to him.

Dan knocked on the front door with a shaky hand, looking around to ensure his boyfriend hadn’t followed him. All he could focus on was the familiar iron taste coating his tongue and the pain that pulsated from his nose to his lower jaw. He shook in place, fighting back the tears that threatened to fill his eyes while he waited for the door to open. He jumped at every noise around him, his senses on overdrive.

The door finally clicked and opened just enough for whoever opened it to see him. A gasp rang out and the door closed again, only for Dan to hear the locks being unclasped. Before he could even register what was happening, he was pulled into the warm-smelling house.

“Dan, oh Dan, are you okay? Of course, you’re not okay, that was quite a question, huh dear? Let me go get my first aid kit. Please sit down, I’ll be right back love.” Kath ranted anxiously before pittering out of the kitchen and into the main bathroom.

Despite his pain, Dan couldn’t help but smile at the woman who was very much like a mother to him. When he came out at fifteen, his parents weren’t quite supportive. Though they didn’t kick him out or anything, he knew that they didn’t love him like they had when he was “straight.” When he got his first boyfriend, his parents would always brush off anything he had to say about his partner, like if they ignored his gayness, it would go away. He had felt so alone like he had no one to guide him until he met the Lesters.

During his first pride with his friends, Dan had felt anything but prideful. In the back of his mind, he could only think about how he was a disappointment to his parents. He felt like he didn’t belong with his family like he wasn’t wanted because of who he loved. Then again, he also didn’t feel like he belonged with his friends who were all decked out in rainbow attire, laughing and taking pictures while he followed them like a shadow. He didn’t belong anywhere.

Kath had been at pride too, holding a sign that said “Free mom hugs for anyone who needs them!”

At first, Dan had been apprehensive. To get a hug from a random woman in place of his own mum felt desperate and embarrassing, childish even. He tried his best to ignore the kind-looking lady, decked out in a rainbow sunhat and a shirt that said “LGBTQ+ mum”. He even made a passive joke about her trying too hard, which was luckily poorly received by his friends. Molly, his closest friend in his group had dragged him to the line in front of Kath, using the excuse that she needed a mom hug and didn’t want to do it alone.

Dan had felt nervous while they waited. His stomach hurt and he felt like he would be rejected by the strange lady, just like he had been by his mother. When it got to his and Molly’s turn, Kath hugged them both so tightly that it felt like she was using all of her strength to put them back together. At that moment, all of the fear and hurt left Dan’s heart and flooded his eyes. He was in hysterics in the arms of a complete stranger.

Of course, Dan was beyond embarrassed. He had apologized more in that one moment than at any other time in his life, but Kath was having none of it.

“Oh my love, none of that.” She had said, pulling tissues from her purse, “When a dam breaks, it breaks because it is worn down. You needed a good cry! My name is Katherine Lester, but you can call me Kath.”

At the end of their first meeting, Kath had insisted that they swap emails so that she could keep an eye on him. Though Dan could hear his parents’ lectures on internet safety in the back of his mind, he gave Kath his email. They emailed at least once a week for a few months, then they started talking on the phone from time to time. Before Dan knew it, he was at the Lester’s house for dinner every Sunday evening.

Nigel, Kath’s husband wasn’t quite as exuberant as her, but he still cared in his own ways. He was always excited to see Dan and would show him whatever painting he was working on at that time. Nigel had even gotten out his paints one evening and let Dan paint with him. It was a shock to Dan, as his own father never included him in his projects.

“Thank you for letting me help Mr. Lester, I’m sorry I’m not that good at painting. I feel like I ruined your art.” Dan mumbled an apology as Nigel set the painting out to dry.

Nigel had raised a greying eyebrow at the brunette, “None of that lad. Art isn’t ever about being perfect or even good. It’s the emotion and love put into it, yeah? Besides, my paintings with my other sons aren’t much better. Especially Phil’s painting. The poor lad doesn’t know his right from his left half the time, but we love him anyway.”

That was the first time that Nigel had called Dan his son, and it was a lot for the nearly eighteen-year-old to take in. He was cared for so deeply by people who weren’t even blood-related, whereas his parents rarely checked up on him anymore. He went to school and went home, not even speaking to the two people who raised him. They now seemed like strangers, living ghosts that haunted him. They didn’t have to speak for Dan to know their disappointment, he knew all too well.

Kath came bustling back into the kitchen, dragging Dan away from his thoughts. He smiled at her meekly and went to bite his lip nervously, only to have a surge of pain shoot through him. Tears filled his eyes again and he swallowed hard, breathing deeper to keep himself from crying.

“Don’t act all tough on me love, I know it hurts. Who did this?” Kath demanded, pulling a bag of frozen carrots from the freezer and handing them to Dan.

Dan closed his eyes tightly and held the cold bag while Kath cleaned his busted-up face gently. She hummed a soft song as she babied him, making him feel even more like a child, but it didn’t upset him like it should have. He was newly eighteen, a certified adult, but he wanted to be cared for. He wanted to feel loved, and one of the only people he trusted to give him that love had beaten him instead.

The tears that the brunette had been fighting back suddenly flowed from his eyes, the salt burning the cuts on his lips. Kath wordlessly put bandages where she could, pushing the bag of carrots against Dan’s bruising eye. Dan whimpered at the feeling, just wanting it to end. Deep down, he knew Kath wouldn’t judge him, but he felt like she must be disappointed in him. He should’ve fought back, he just couldn’t.

“Daniel, I need you to tell me who did this.” Kath said, her voice stern, “What happened?”

Dan took a shaky breath and looked away from her, “Travis and I got into an argument… I knew… I knew I should have just kept my big fucking mouth shut. I found out he was cheating on me again and I confronted him about it. He’s never hit me this bad before. This is all my fault.”

Kath shook her head quickly, “No, not at all love. This is his fault and only his fault. Nigel and I will help you through this, you’re not alone. Are any of your things at his apartment? Does he know where you are?”

Dan shook his head slowly, “The only thing there is one of my old hoodies but I don’t care about that. He didn’t follow me, he got mad because I got blood on his carpet so he was trying to clean it. He probably thinks I went home, he doesn’t even know where you live.”

“Okay, sweetheart. You’re spending the night here. I’m going to call the police so that they can go after Travis. This is not happening to you ever again. Come to the lounge, get comfortable on the couch.” Kath ordered, ushering him to the couch and helping him lie on his back.

“Mum? What’s happened?” An unfamiliar voice came from the stairs, making Dan tense.

Kath picked up the home phone, looking up towards the stairs, “Dan’s hurt. He’s lying on the couch now. I’m going to the office to call the police. You can keep him company, please Phil?” she rambled, nearly running into the small office.

Dan heard a quiet grunt and footsteps moving down the squeaky stairs while he fidgeted anxiously with his fingers. He had known the Lesters for nearly two years, but he had never met Phil before. Dan had heard so much about him that it sometimes came as a shock that they hadn’t met yet. Kath loved to dote on her sons, so she was always talking about Phil’s success at York University and how proud she was of him. He had heard so many childhood stories that he could probably write a novel on them.

“Hey Dan, my mum has talked lots about you, you know? It’s nice to finally put a face to you though. I like your shirt, Muse is my favorite band.” Phil said, sitting on the floor while facing the couch.

Dan blushed a bit at the words and kept his eyes closed. His head was killing him and the light would only make it worse. He put more pressure on the frozen bag of carrots, the cold soothing his sore nose and eye.

“Muse is my favorite too. Sorry, I’m kind of out of it, bad night.” Dan whispered, flinching when his voice cracked.

Phil chuckled, “No need to apologize. Do you want a drink or anything? A blanket?”

Dan was suddenly aware that he was shivering, his teeth chattering randomly behind his closed lips. “A blanket sounds nice if it’s not too much of a hassle.”

“I’ll go grab one from the closet, I’ll be right back,” Phil said, pushing himself up with a grunt and running to the hallway closet.

The brunette couldn’t help but smile as Phil ran away. They had never met before but it truly felt like they had known each other for years. Dan found himself trusting the other man easily. It could be because he trusted the Lesters so much, and Phil was a part of them. However, it felt deeper than just that.

Footsteps alerted Dan of Phil’s presence again and he opened his eyes slightly. His vision was a bit blurry and he removed the frozen carrots from his face. He stared up at the ceiling, too out of it to move.

“I’m going to put a pillow under your head, is that okay?” Phil asked Dan, receiving a nod in return.

Phil smiled and walked behind Dan’s head, putting his fluffiest pillow beneath Dan’s head. He could tell how tense Dan was just by touching his head for a moment. The younger man’s shoulders were frozen in place and his neck barely moved. Phil wondered briefly if Dan was in much pain.

“I have the blanket too, can I put it around you? I’ll take off your shoes too if it’s okay with you.” Phil offered, wanting to make Dan as comfortable as possible.

Dan nodded again, “yeah… I’m okay with that, but you don’t have to.”

Phil chuckled and shook his head, “I know I don’t have to, but I want to. You’re not hurt anywhere else, yeah? I don’t want to accidentally hurt you more.”

“No, it’s just my face, and my ego I guess,” Dan whispered groggily, blinking his eyes a few times to clear them.

Phil nodded and got to work, quickly pulling Dan’s Converse off and setting them on the floor. He was surprised that his mum hadn’t already done this for Dan, but he knew she must be panicked. Someone that she loved dearly was hurt and when her loved ones were harmed in any way, she would go from a rabbit to a wolf.

“Does that feel better?” Phil asked, “I hate shoes with a passion. Laying down with them on sounds gross.”

Dan found himself giggling a bit, “yeah it does actually. Shoes don’t bother me but they were hurting my feet. I ran here as fast as I could. It was the most exercise I had in a long time.”

“Exercise is the worst. I’d rather just play video games or go on YouTube.” Phil explained with a shrug, shaking out the blanket he had brought for Dan

The brunette smiled and nodded in agreement, watching the blanket move above him. When it landed on him in a smooth motion, he sighed contentedly and yawned. He felt more relaxed in an instant, his tense shoulders becoming pliant against the couch. Dan giggled when Phil began to tuck the blanket around his body like he was being tucked into bed.

Dan blinked his eyes a few more times, and his vision finally became clear. He shuffled slightly, propping himself up more against the pillow. When Dan paused and looked at Phil for the first time, his heart leaped into his throat. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“You’re…Oh my god, you’re AmazingPhil!” Dan gasped, not believing what he was seeing.

Phil laughed shyly and ran his fingers through his black fringe, “Yeah I am. You watch my videos?”

Dan nodded quickly and blushed, “You’re literally my favorite YouTuber. How did I not know you were Kath's son?”

At that moment, Kath walked back into the room with a calming smile, “The police are looking for him now. It��s my understanding that this isn’t his first time hurting a partner. They told me to keep you here and they will stop by if they need questions answered.” she explained, gently petting Dan’s hair.

“Thank you for helping me. I didn’t know where else to go. I’m sorry.” Dan whispered, tears causing his eyes to gloss over.

Kath kissed the top of his head, “None of that dear. You’re family and we Lesters take care of our family. Phil, will you help Dan upstairs? He can take Martyn’s room for the night. The bedding is clean.”

Phil nodded and reached a hand out to Dan, “Come along sire, I shall take you to your chambers.”

Dan rolled his eyes in response, but he couldn’t hide the blush that tinted his cheeks. He took Phil’s hand and shuddered at the electricity that seemed to shoot through him. It took all of his willpower to stop himself from fanboying and babbling like an idiot at the beautiful man in front of him. ]

“Thank you,” Dan giggled, releasing Phil’s hand after he steadied himself.

Kath smiled at the boys, “I’m glad you boys have finally met. I wish it was under better circumstances, but it’s nice. I’m sure you will be the best of friends. You’re quite similar, seems I raise weird children and collect them too.”

Both Dan and Phil blushed at her words, both giving her goodnight hugs and allowing her to fuss over them.

“Goodnight my boys, I hope you have sweet dreams. Dan, I expect you to rest. Feel free to watch movies or something on the TV in Martyn’s room, but you better rest up. Phil, give him some pain medicine before he sleeps please?” Kath instructed before tiptoeing to her room.

Phil nodded at her, chuckling when she walked into the bedroom that she and Nigel shared. “Alright Dan, do you want to hang out in my room until you feel like sleeping? Something tells me that you’re too anxious for sleep right now.” Phil whispered, leading Dan up the stairs.

Dan nodded shyly, “Yeah… I don’t really want to be alone right now. But I don’t want to bother you.”

“Not a bother at all. I want to get to know you anyway. I’ve heard so much about you, but I have so many questions.” Phil smiled, opening his bedroom door to let Dan in.

The brunette blushed at the familiar room, recognizing it from Phil’s YouTube videos. It felt like he had just walked onto a movie set, but it was actually real. Phil’s suitcase was sitting by his computer desk, open but barely unpacked. His room was quite messy, but it felt welcoming nonetheless.

“Make yourself at home. I’m going to grab you some pain meds and water.” Phil explained, walking out of the room.

Dan took in his surroundings quietly, blushing a deep red color. He sat slowly on the bed, still looking around. It was a dream come true to be in the AmazingPhil bedroom, though not like his typical fantasies. He shook the dirty thoughts from his mind and smiled at Phil when he walked back into the room, a glass of water in one hand and two pills in the other.

“Here you go.” Phil smiled, handing Dan the pills and water, “Do you want to wear some of my clothes? They might be big on you but they’ve got to be better than jeans and a t-shirt.”

The younger man took the medicine carefully, chugging the water down easily. His face wasn’t hurting nearly as badly as before, but he still felt the burning of his busted lip and his eye ached. “That sounds nice, thanks.” He grinned sheepishly.

Phil chuckled and walked to his suitcase, pulling out a green York hoodie and a pair of Cookie Monster pajama pants, “they’re clean, I promise. This is my favorite hoodie to wear when I don’t feel the best. Maybe its good vibes will help you too.”

Dan blushed deeply, recognizing the green hoodie almost immediately. He took the clothes with a soft thank you and walked into the bathroom that was across the hall. He pulled the hoodie on first, relishing the comfort that he felt from it. After he pulled the pajama pants on, he pulled the drawstrings as tightly as they could go against his waist. Dan stood in front of the mirror, frowning at the guy who looked back at him. Of course, he would be meeting his idol like this. He looked and felt awful.

He heaved a sigh and walked back into Phil’s room with his jeans in hand. He felt more comfortable than before, but he still hated how busted up he looked. Dan looked at Phil who was sitting in his bed, up against the wall. When they made eye contact, Dan felt his heart clench and he shuddered.

“Sit down, you’re making me feel short.” Phil joked, turning on the lamp beside his bed and asking Dan to turn the main light off.

Dan laughed softly and sat down beside Phil, shifting to make himself comfortable. The silence between them was heavy, but not at all awkward. If anything, it was relaxing, peaceful even. Dan sighed and closed his eyes slowly, “so, what do you want to know about me?” he asked.

“Everything you’re willing to share.” Phil shrugged with a smile.

They talked for hours, about everything and nothing all at once. They talked about childhood memories, their biggest dreams, and all of their favorites. They talked about fears, bad experiences, and depression. Neither man could tell you who fell asleep first, or if they were cuddling before sleep overtook them. Either way, they both slept like babies that night.

Around eleven in the morning the next day, Kath knocked on Martyn’s bedroom door, wanting to check on Dan. “Dan dear, I want to check on your face and give you some medicine. It’s probably a good idea for you to eat something as well.”

When she didn’t get an answer, she cracked the door open a bit and peeked inside. All that she saw was a still-made bed and no indication that anyone had even been there. Her heart sank and she looked at Nigel who had just walked up next to her,

“Do you think he snuck out? The lad’s never been good at being taken care of.” Nigel mumbled, rubbing his wife’s back.

Kath shrugged weakly, “Let’s ask Phil. Maybe he’ll know what’s going on.” she suggested.

Nigel nodded and they walked down the hallway, Kath peeking into Phil’s slightly ajar door and gasping. Nigel frowned at her reaction, “Love? What’s wrong?” He asked.

Kath giggled quietly and pushed the door open further, “Look dear, look how precious they are.”

Nigel raised an eyebrow and looked inside, smiling when he saw Dan sleeping peacefully on Phil’s chest. Phil had his arms wrapped securely around Dan. The duvet was wrapped loosely around them and Dan was snoring softly.

“Well, would you look at that?” Nigel chuckled, wrapping an arm around his wife’s shoulders.

Kath smiled up at him, “I didn’t think they’d get on this quickly. But I’m glad that they did. They were meant to meet last night, I can feel it. Our Dan needs Phil I believe.”
