you have mentioned zk arrange marriage fic twice already… its ghost calls from graveyard methinks lmao. can you tell us more about it, please?
...fiacom is also kinda arrange marriage au tho 💀💀
not you keeping count!! basically it was a 5 years post-war political marriage thing where Katara, for political reasons and not for any other reason – thank you very much – volunteers to marry the fire lord. much to his horror bc refusing would have terrible consequences. very much a “why is the woman I love in my house” type of horror. katara doesn’t understand the big deal. friends can get married it’s sooo normal. much idiocy would ensue
fiakom does have a type of arranged marriage lmaooo you’re right! ig I didn’t stray far in terms of that

Sokkla Saturday Wk 3: Earth
My humble submission for sokkla saturday 2023 week 3. not quite good enough to put up on AO3 or FFN, but good enough to make it to tumblr, ig. very heavily inspired by Pictures of the Past, figured it could sorta work for when the kids start asking questions about what did mom do in the EK during the 100 years war *ps: there is the word 'earth' in the fic so that counts as meeting the theme *pps: TalesofOnyxBats is a goated Sokkla writer no cap fr anyways...... ******* It was going to happen at some point, they figured. After all, they figured that their kids had inherited enough intellect between the two of them to put two and two together. Or at least, have a good theory as to why everytime they travelled to Ba Sing Se (which wasn't often, but enough for them to have a semi decent idea of what the Upper Ring looked like.), their mother would often meet them at their granduncle's tea shop in disguise. Or why they would stay in the United Republics' embassy grounds instead of the Earth King's palace, among other questions.  __________________________________

If it was any consolation, when the question finally came they were travelling in their private airship instead of on the ground in Ba Sing Se itself.
"Mom?"
"Yes Miska?"
"Why do you need to put on disguises every time we go to Ba Sing Se?"
"Well…-"
"Also why can't we stay at the Earth King's palace? Aunt Katara and Uncle Aang and their family always stay there." Risa asked.
Turning to her husband, Azula shot him a glance, which Sokka immediately understood. Taking a deep breath, she answered "Meet me in our room in 10 minutes.".
"But wh-"
"We'll answer your questions then." Sokka cut them off, his voice taking on a serious tone that Risa and Miska understood to mean I will not repeat myself.  _________________________________
Azula and Sokka's bedroom
"Sokka?" Azula asked, her gaze fixed on the carpet of their room.
"W-what do I tell them?" Azula asked nervously, simultaneously wanting to tell her kids the truth while not wanting to tarnish their image of her.
Taking her hands in his, Sokka replied "As much or as little as you think they need to know. It's your story to tell, not mine."
"You were there when…-"
"We didn't know any better, Azula. Whatever you choose, know this: I will always still love you." he replied, kissing the back of her hand. __________________________________________ __________________________________________
Meanwhile, outside their room…
"Riri?"
"Do you think mom and dad are mad at us?"
"I-I don't think so."
"You saw how mom reacted right? D-d-do you think we shou-"
"If we did they would have shut it down immediately, not ask us to see them in 10 minutes."
"I suppose you have a point."
"Once again, your big sister proves that she is always right."
"Uh huh…like dating both Min Seok and Sakura clearly wasn't going to lead to…whatever that was."
"A momentary lapse in judgement." she handwaved, not eager to relive that particular set of memories.
"So you say, so you say. I suppose there is no reason to delay any longer?" Miska replied, giving their parents' cabin a quick few raps.
"Mom? Dad?"
"Come in."
Closing the door behind them, the twins waited with bated breath for whatever their parents had to say. "First off," Azula began,  "both of you aren't in trouble. That said, please stay back after this Risa, your father and I have some things we would like to discuss regarding how you conduct your…relationships.", to which Risa swallowed a gulp.
"But back to the topic at hand, what I am about to tell you is only for your ears alone and no one else outside this room. Do I make myself clear?"
When the twins nodded, she continued, giving Sokka's hand a squeeze as she did so. "How much of the Hundred Years War did your teachers tell you about?"
"Um…only that dad was part of the team that defeated the Fire Nation and ended it? Oh and that the Fire Nation staged a coup that toppled Ba Sing Se in a single night and occupied it for six months." Miska answered.
"Mom?"
"Yes Risa?"
"Were you the one who staged the coup and overthrew Kuei?"
"I wasn't alone in that, but yes, I was the one who planned and carried it out, among other things." Azula replied, before briefly explaining what had happened that night in the palace, though there were details that she omitted, choosing to set that aside for another time. If nothing else, they deserve to at least hear my side of the events, she thought.
With bated breath, she leaned against Sokka, a fluttering sensation in her stomach as she hoped against hope that her kids wouldn't outright disassociate themselves from her given her past or worse, hate her for her actions (who could blame them, really, she thought).
As the silence continued, Azula felt the urge to fill the space growing within her and just as she could no longer resist, they stood up and wrapped her in a hug, taking her by surprise as they let their simple action speak on their behalf. At this, her eyes started to tear as her worst fears proved unfounded and she hugged her kids tightly in response, even as Sokka wrapped his arms around them all.
"Thank you Risa, Miska." she whispered.

i was thinking about it and i realised that i had sort of subconsciously been under the impression that atla was one of those star wars situations that tells you anyone can be magic but in actuality every major plotpoint just ties back to one single family every time (some of you may be saying “but rey wasnt a skywalker!” to which i respond “who was the primary antagonist then wiseguy” but this post isnt actually about star wars so fuck me ig) anyway what im getting at is, other than zuko, whose major theme is his relationship with his family and therefore with his nation as a whole (and also he was actual royalty so it was inevitable tbh), every single other main character’s parents were not explicitly benders, or were nonbenders. aangs parents arent ever even shown! i mean for a show where its canon that magic is genetic, they do a waaaayyyyyy better job at delivering the “anyone can be a hero” storyline than media that actually textually tells that story lmao
not only is the show about children, its also about lots of marginalised groups. all the characters are POC, toph is blind, katara is a girl (toph is obviously also a girl but her character doesnt really explore misogyny like katara ykwim?), sokka is just some guy even in the context of the magic system, even aang — the literal chosen one!!!! — is just a random kid who also happens to be the reincarnation of the most powerful spirit in the galaxy or whatever (thats a recurring theme of the show actually), and zuko ,who is the most nepo baby protagonist, isnt actually the prodigy of his family and is instead frequently upstaged by his little sister lol
like it would have been so easy to do a “and guess what the reason toph is such a great bender is because she’s secretly king bumi’s great niece!!!!!!” reveal, which is such a classic plot twist that tbh its barely a twist these days, but instead toph was a badass specifically because of the unique perspective she gained by being disabled and the way that allowed her to connect with the world around her ie the badgermoles — thats a way stronger story! the only relationship reveal we get (other than i guess aang learning he’s the avatar which kind of maybe counts??) is zuko learning he’s related to roku which. i mean he was already a nepo baby so it doesnt detract from his agency really and in fact reinforces his recurring “there are two wolves” conflict, which up to that point was mostly shown through azula and iroh (think his ba sing se fever dream wherein there were two dragons inside him voiced by azula and iroh respectively one advocating good the other evil, foreshadowing the final conflict of the season where he must choose between azula and iroh and he backslides in his moral arc by choosing azula which is a really cool narrative choice that tbh now that im thinking about it i probably should have made this tangent its own post but we’re here now ig)
also i was thinking about how bending is genetic but also skips generations (neither kya nor hakoda is a bender, and we dont know of any grandparent other than gran gran, who is a nonbender, and i think its a dominant gene bc ursa wasnt a bender to my knowledge but zuko and azula are, so probably neither kya nor hakoda had bender parents, but obviously katara is a bender, but sokka isnt, plus there were identical twins in the volcano episode where only one was a bender which does confuse me scientifically but i dropped science so whatever) and bending is shown as common enough that probably everyone has atleast one ancestor who is a bender so tbh it sort of circles back to being random lol
this post is really just me thinking out loud (well not. out loud. bc its written. you get it) so it might not be coherent but idk its another way that atla is very clever and has effective storytelling and creates themes subtextually etc etc ok thanks

i feel like you'd write an mcd fic for katara... to my understanding you've killed aang a few times, and thus one day the angst shall be reversed... (- thinkingisadangerouspastime)
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA! yes, i have indeed killed Aang quite a few times... it is actually quite unfortunate that this is the reputation that now precedes me... >.<
and i have killed Katara before! granted, it was in a drabble, so ig it doesn't count, but i stILL DID IT. and anyways, i'm starting to move away from mcd and focus mostly on expanding my genres more into fluff, hurt/comfort, introspection, and the like... but mcd has always been and will always be a favorite trope of mine, so ya never know 👀
thanks for the ask @thinkingisadangerouspastime!!

i choose you
Tumblr media
summary: was it fate or a result of the choices you’d made that kept pulling you towards a certain firebender?
a/n: so the reader is aang’s adopted older airbender sister in this, and this a soulmate au but it’s not obvious ig.
word count: 824
To say that this last year had been weird would be an understatement. One minute you were chasing after your younger brother after he tried to run away and the next you were waking up in the South Pole and being told that you’d been in a giant ice block for the past 100 years. Then you got borderline stalked by a psycho fire nation prince and now that very same prince is sitting right next to you as you lay on the ground looking up at the stars.
“It’s funny isn't it? How you can make one seemingly insignificant choice and then the entire course of your life is irreversibly changed.” You don’t turn to look at him as you said this, your gaze still locked onto the night sky but you could feel his eyes on you.
“I used to come here with Aang before he discovered that he was the Avatar and we’d stay up late and I’d tell him stories, his favourite one was the red string of fate, do you know that one?”
“No, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it.” He slid down onto the ground, laying next to you.
“Well I suppose it’s not really a story, more of a belief. But according to legend, an invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break. Sometimes I wonder if I was destined to end up here, maybe there was someone that the universe really wanted me to meet.”
“Do you think you’ve met that person yet?” You turned your head to look at him, he was only inches away, his golden eyes burning into you. You reached up to brush the dark hair out of his eyes, letting your hand linger.
“I’m not sure yet.”
You let yourself slowly lean towards him until there was barely a centimetre between you when a crashing sound from one of the rooms in the temples made you spring away.
___________
You stretched out on the sand as your brother asked Zuko if he was excited about the play, “No, the Ember Island plays are always absurd.”
You chuckled and squinted at Aang, “What’s it called again?”
He ran over brandishing the poster at you, “The Boy In the Iceberg!”
You sat up, shooting a playful smile at the grumpy prince, “Oh come on, Sifu Hotman, it’ll be fun.”
He grumbled something incoherent at you and Aang ran off to talk to Sokka about something.
You’d ended up in between Zuko and Katara much to the disappointment of your brother.
Slipping your arm through Zuko’s, you leaned to excitedly whisper in his ear, “Oh I think it’s starting!” He hummed in response, silently thanking the spirits that it was too dark for you to see his blush. You stayed like that for the duration of the first act, occasionally whispering comments about certain parts they’d embellished. They showed the invasion of the fire nation palace and then it cut to a scene with just Actor Y/n and Actor Zuko. Actor Zuko took her hands in his, “My dear y/n, I have a confession to make, I am in love with you.” You felt Zuko tense up as you felt all of your friends staring at you both. You kept your eyes glued to the stage as he continued, “It’s always been you. I tried to fight it and I tried to deny it but I can’t do it. You’re the only one for me, I’d go as far to say I believe that we’re soulmates!” As soon as he said that, Zuko shrugged off your arm and got up disappearing through the doors. Your heart sank, wondering if you should ignore it or go after him, Katara placed a hand on your shoulder, motioning for you to go after him and so you did.
You found him sitting outside the doors with his head in his hands, “What’s wrong?”
He leaned his head back against the wall, sighing, “I have a confession to make.” He echoed the actor’s words, still not looking at you.
“Go on.”
“Do you remember that night at the western air temples, we were talking under the stars?”
You nodded and he continued, “Back when I was hunting you and everyone else, I uh I had a thing for you and I figured it would go away but it hasn’t and that night when you started talking about your soulmate, I thought that you were talking about me and I-” You cut him off, pressing your lips to his like you’d wanted to that night. You pulled away slowly, “I was talking about you that night and I meant it. I choose you and I’d choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I’d find you and choose you.”

Pairing: Sokka x Reader
Warnings: just the reader being real stressed ig
Word count: 1.2k
sorry if this made like... zero sense LSDJFLKSDF
Tumblr media
For the entire day, Y/N was feeling out of it. Even as the words "body reported" flashed up at her, she hardly listened as her friends argued over who was "sus."
"Well Y/N's been awfully quiet." The sound of her name snapped her out of her thoughts. What is wrong with you?
"Yeah, Y/N, what's up with that huh?" Katara was suspicious of her.
“Y/NNNNN, give me attentionnn,” Sokka whined, poking her side. "You're normally so talkative!"
“Sorry, I just... it's nothing." She gave him a half-hearted smile, which was all she could manage. What is wrong with you? The question bounced around in her head once again.
"Well, Y/N is sus, VOTE HER OUT!" Aang instantly voted for someone, and she knew that "someone" was her. Pretty soon, all votes were in.
Y/N was not the imposter. 1 imposter remaining.
She sighed and continued to do her tasks as a ghost.
After Among Us, Katara led her into her own bedroom just to talk while Sokka, Zuko, Toph, and Aang did who-knows-what.
“Do... do you ever think about the future?” Katara asked her, looking up at the sky, and Y/N shook her head. Should she be thinking about the future more? Thinking about the future really got her stressed. She had no idea what was ahead of her, which worried her.
By the time her friends left, she was feeling mentally exhausted, but she put on a smile as she waved goodbye to them. She closed the door, and Sokka instantly went into his bedroom, yawning. She knew that he was asleep in 10 seconds, but it was past 1 am, so she couldn't exactly blame him. She trudged into her own room, quickly changed into her pajamas, and plopped into her bed. Her covers were cool to the touch, and as she pulled them up, her body thanked her.
She turned around in her bed. Did you do your math quiz? You know, it’s due in a couple minutes. Her mind snapped open as she frantically flipped on her laptop, opening up the assignment. Oh. She did it already. Thank goodness.
Wait. It was already graded? She scrolled to check on her grade.
64/100. Comments: Y/N, you can do better than this.
She- she had studied for it. She remembered studying for it; for a week, she got barely any sleep, and she was just constantly buried under her math book.
She flipped the pillow over. The thoughts that Katara had relayed on to her replayed in her mind. Why haven’t you really thought about your future?
She repositioned herself. Why don’t you have stuff figured out? What are you going to do about your math test?
She tried to get to sleep, but her mind wouldn’t shut off. She checked the time on her phone.
Oh shoot, it’s 2:47. She shut off her phone and closed her eyes, but no matter how tired she was, she couldn’t sleep. Some hot chocolate wouldn’t hurt, right? She got up, despite how late at night it was. Tripping over herself, she huffed, blinking frustrated tears out of her eyes.
She got to the kitchen and got the hot chocolate powder out of the cupboard. She couldn’t see very well, since it was pretty dark, but she opened the packet and placed it on the counter. She went to get the milk, and accidentally knocked over the packet, spilling all of its contents onto the floor. Shoot.
She was just so frustrated. Tears leaked out of her eyes as she fell to her knees, starting to wipe away the powder with some wet paper towels. Why couldn’t she do anything right? She continued wiping, her tears dripping onto the floor. Silly Y/N. It’s only hot chocolate. Stop crying.
She couldn’t stop crying. Instead, she started to sob. What’s wrong with you? Her hand fell limp against her side as she stopped cleaning. She sniffed and tried to push the tears away with her sleeves, but they just kept coming. Stop crying. Y/N. STOP CRYING. People have bigger problems than this, what’s wrong with you?
Pulling her shaking legs in, she sat up in a fetal position. Why- why couldn't she breathe?! She tried drawing in several breaths, but it wasn't working.
"Boo!" Sokka jumped out at her, and she screamed. She heard some laughter in the distance as she curled into a ball, panic rushing through her veins. Shoot, it’s Sokka. Why is he awake? She frantically wiped away her tears before he could see.
“Y/N? Are you in here?” Sokka tapped her arm, still laughing. His smile was almost mocking “Y/N, it’s like 3 am. Why are you still awake?” He squinted, trying to make out her figure in the dark. His voice was small and a bit raspy due to how late at night it was. “Woah, what happened here- Y/N?” The laughter quickly died on his lips, as he finally saw the state she was in.
"Hey, Y/N...? A-are you okay?" His voice dropped, now considerably softer. She opened her eyes ever so slightly, and she saw Sokka bend down next to her. "What's wrong?" He looked at her with concerned eyes.
"S-Sokka..." Her voice was cut off with a sob. Her breathing was ragged, irregular. She... she couldn't breathe.
"Hey, hey, it’s alright. I'm right here," he reassured her. "Breathe for me, okay?"
"I- I c-can't," her voice interrupted every second with an attempt to inhale, but she couldn't. Sokka grabbed her shaking hands.
"Y/N, it's okay. Inhale through your nose." Y/N tried her best to breathe in, drawing in a shaky breath. "Good! Okay, now hold it... okay good, great job. Now exhale for 8. 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... 7... 8..." She let her breath go. "Inhale again, for four. 1... 2... 3... 4... great!" Sokka continued counting for her until she could breathe again.
"Y/N?” She exhaled.
"I'm, I’m s-so sorry." Tears leaked through her eyes, blurring her vision.
"Hey, you have nothing to apologize for. Are you alright? What happened?" He pulled her into a hug. Her body was still shaking, just not as violently as before. She swallowed. He released himself out of the hug in order to look at her properly, but his hands still clung to hers. He spoke calmly and softly, which Y/N appreciated, although it was a lot different from the normal Sokka.
“No, I’m sorry. It’s really nothing, I don’t know why I’m like this.” She looked to the floor. Her eyes scanned the floor, covered in hot chocolate powder. Sokka pulled her chin up, forcing her to look at him.
“Y/N, it’s okay, I promise.” He wiped the tears on her cheek with his finger. “What’s wrong?”
“Just… I don’t know.”
“You can always talk to me, okay?”
“Okay.” She sniffed, and he got up, reaching for paper towels. He started wiping away the leftover powder and Y/N went to help, but he stopped her.
“It’s okay, I got it. Just hang out on the couch for a second,” he said.
“It’s fine, I can clean it up.” He sighed.
“Y/N, you leave me no choice.” He picked her up and hoisted her over his shoulder.
“Sokka, please just let me go.” She struggled against him, but he threw her onto the couch.
“Stay.” He continued wiping up the hot chocolate on the floor, and began heating up the milk. Y/N watched him go through the steps intently, and he came back with two mugs of hot chocolate, one white and one blue. He handed her one and she carefully placed it onto the coffee table in front of her.
“Thanks, Sokka.”

unquestionably-queer replied to your post “I mean, since we're at it, could you maybe talk about the double...”
i agree w a lot of this!! i dont want to speak out of turn but from what ive heard from indigenous women (which im not) the problem isnt the ship itself but its representation ig? basically my understanding is that in fanfic n what not katara is often stripped of her autonomy and relocated and Thats what people have problems with? i think youre right just bc zuko and sokka and are close and age and its Gay doesnt suddenly make it not vaguely racist (for lack of better terms)
That is a perfectly fair and valid criticism of the corners in fandom in which that happens. However, at that point, it’s an issue with racism in general in fandoms at large--and, I promise you, this is not an issue that’s exclusive to Zutara. I can only speak for my own experience, of course, but the Zutara discord server of which I am part has a lot of poc as well as queer people (including some queer poc!!!), some of whom are indigenous, and so when people call the entire fandom ‘white, straight, and racist’ (which is effectively what happens when they say that just shipping zk is racist/heteronormative, regardless of like, context), it not only erases all of us and our contributions to the fandom, but it also like... ignores the fact that those fics and metas are soooo not the norm.
Like, I’ve lost count of how many ‘fire lady Katara’ metas take into account how much of her culture she would bring with her to the Fire Nation. Everything from spectacular fanart designing clothing that incorporates her own culture with her husbands, to having her called Lady of the Moon rather than Fire Lady, to having their courtship extend over the years she spent as an ambassador and making so many changes for the better to the nation she would eventually marry into.
I almost never see meta or fanart where Katara marries Zuko and then completely assimilates and abandons her culture. But you know where I do see Katara stripped of her autonomy, made an accessory of her husband, denied agency, and having her legacy completely erased to the point where if you hadn’t watched AtLA you’d have no idea why she’d be well known at all except for who she married?
Canon.
That’s what the comics and LoK did to Katara, so I really don’t understand how these things get flung at the Zutara fandom as if we haven’t been fighting back against that future for her for years. The Northern and Southern Water Tribes went into a full blown civil war and Katara didn’t lift a finger to try and use her political clout or just her fierce passion and love for her people to knock some sense into them. Her son and his entire family were kidnapped by zealots and threatened with death and she didn’t even try to help the rescue effort. I get that LoK wasn’t the Gaang’s story, but AtLA wasn’t the White Lotus’ story either, and those old ass men got to kick ass and take names all over the place, so don’t hand me that ‘Katara was too old’ crap. She was, what, eighty something? Bumi was 112 in AtLA!!!
Sorry, I didn’t mean to go off on an LoK rant, but my ultimate point is, it doesn’t make sense to me to come after zutara shippers when, by and large, we wish canon had done better by Katara and that is reflected in much of our fanworks and metas. Does this mean there won’t be racist shlock in our fandom??? Of course not! Because racism is insidious and no fandom is free from it, so of course if there are works that perpetuate harmful ideals it’s perfectly fine to talk about them and ask that the people involved do better in the future, or just avoid those who refuse to change. But slamming an entire fandom for the actions of a few, while ignoring the fact that their preferred ship pulls from the same exact fanbase (and I’m sorry, but white gays are no less racist than white straights, that’s just a fact), is hypocritical in the extreme.
Tl;dr: people in glass houses really shouldn’t throw stones.

wait what do u think makes earthbenders overpowered?? i’ve seen this opinion here and there but ig i never noticed it myself
I LOVE DISCUSSING THIS OKAY SO LOOK LOOK LOOK
also there will be mild spoilers in regards to legend of korra so,,,
first of all, let’s break down the other benders.
firebenders: they’re capable of lightning bending and combustion bending. combustion bending is VERY rare, however lightning bending seemed to be a far more common skill for factory work and such in LOK. firebenders can also create fire at will, so fire doesn’t have to already be there.
waterbenders: they’re capable of healing, bloodbending; however this is also a rare skill that most people can only maintain during a full moon. And if you want, you can count ice and steam and those things. i feel like im forgetting something but meh. waterbenders can’t really create water they need to get it from another source as seen with katara using her sweat and such.
airbenders: well,,, they can bend air jkashdkajshd. i feel like airbenders often have their skill lessened than it actually it because the only airbenders we see are all mostly against violence. airbenders are capable of suffocating people, and im sure more talented one can do worse. along with the ability of flight, which is VERY rare as there was only 2 reported incidences of this, and the funky spirit thing.
EARTHBENDERS: so the main reason i think earthbenders are probably the most powerful in the entire series is because of all the subtypes of bending. for starters, theres normal earthbending, then there’s metalbending which wasn’t necessarily rare just new, then there is lavabending which is also new so im unaware of how uncommon it is, and sandbending. so there are already like 4 types of bending within earthbending, and when you consider the potential uses of all those types eartbending is honestly really overpowered.
we witness metalbenders capable of bending poison out of bodies because it has minor metallic properties, and since the human body has iron in it i wouldn’t be shocked if metalbenders could do things similar to that of bloodbending.
at the end of the day this is just my opinion and the whole point of the bending is for there to be balance so they’re technically all equal but i feel like earthbenders have the most power, and airbenders have the most potential.

Moonlit Champion: Part One, Fire
@cubedleo ITS FINALLY HEREEE (lemme know if y’all want on a taglist ig??)
A/N: I have finally managed to bs a first chapter to the Spirit Sokka AU are y’all proud of me. AO3 link!!
Summary: Death by fire was a horrible thing to watch, and Sokka realized then that the raging element would take him one day too.
Sokka had imagined what dying would feel like since the day his mother was killed.
He used to sit by the fire at night and stare into the flames, wondering what it would be like to be engulfed by them. To feel the heat slowly inch up his body, smell his own flesh burning, taste the smoke from his disintegrating skin.
It was… never very accurate when he was little. His father never let him see his mom’s body, and Katara never talked about it.
Like everything else, that changed after he met Aang.
The first time Sokka saw fire kill someone, he froze. He could hear Katara screaming behind him, telling him to hurry, Momo tugging at his arm.
Death by fire was a horrible thing to watch, and Sokka realized then that the raging element would take him one day too.
When Katara asked if he was okay, he lied and said yes.
Funny, how things come back to a person in times like this.
Sokka sees the world in slow motion, his limbs too heavy to move in time. The only thing moving in real time are Katara’s screams, and the flames.
Sokka wonders what his mother was thinking about before she died.
Because all he can think about are the three little kids he’s leaving behind, and that just might burn more than the fire.
Well, not really. The fire burns a lot.
Sokka doesn’t realize he’s screaming until Aang’s hands are cupping his face, saying something Sokka can’t understand. For a second, cool relief sweeps through his body like dipping his blistered and tired feet into a cold lake after a full day of walking, and his mouth clamps shut. Just as quickly as it comes, it’s gone again.
“Not enough,” Katara says, and she sounds angry. Sokka tries to turn so he can see her, tell her that it’s okay, that she’s doing great, but his body won’t comply.
“Dad? What does it feel like to die?”
Hakota raises an eyebrow, eyes rimmed red. “I don’t know. And hopefully neither of us will for a long time.”
“Do you think mom was scared?”
“Get some sleep Sokka, we’ll talk in the morning.”
His chest. That’s where the fire bender got him. He’d meant to shield himself, but his brain sort of stopped working when he saw the fire on its way towards Aang.
It wasn’t the first time he’d been a human shield, but it’s probably the last.
“Sokka?” That’s Toph, definitely Toph.
This time, Sokka manages to turn and find her, he pretends he does it on his own, and that it isn’t Aang’s hands guiding him. “Oh, hey guys, we win?”
“Always do,” Aang says. Which is, obviously, a lie. They lose a lot.
Sokka smiles, and his face crinkles and cracks like walrus jerky left in the sun too long. “Word to the wise, if you wan’ a tan, don’t ask a fire bender.”
Katara snaps at him to stop joking around. Probably, at least. He doesn’t really hear her. There’s an ocean in his ears, he thinks it wants him to sleep.
It’s loud, everything is loud. Sokka wants to sleep.
He closes his eyes, and the sounds stop.
“Hello, my love.”
Sokka exhales, and the burning fades to nothing.
“Mom?”
***
“Katara! I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Gran gran made dinner.”
Katara sniffs and wipes her sleeve across her face, turning away from her brother. “I’m not hungry.”
“Oh.” She can hear Sokka sitting down next to her, scratching the back of his head. “Well I’m not either.”
Scoffing, Katara reaches back blindly to shove him. “Liar, you’re always hungry.”
“That’s not true!”
“Yes it is. Go eat, Sokka.”
“Fine.” Sokka doesn’t get up. “After you tell me what’s wrong.”
Katara whips around to glare at him, hands clenched into fists. “Mom is gone, that’s what’s wrong. And now- and now dad left too!”
Sokka’s nose is red from the cold, but his eyes are red from crying when he thinks Katara can’t hear. She wants to punch him when he smiles. “You’ve still got me!”
“Until you leave.” Katara hugs her knees to her chest and huffs. “Everyone leaves.”
Sokka throws his arms around her haphazardly, almost knocking them both over. “Not me!”
Faking annoyance, Katara glares at the wide expanse of snow surrounding them. “Promise?”
“Promise.”
Katara’s hands shake with the water she’s pressing against her brother’s chest. He doesn’t move. “You promised.”
“Katar-”
“I need to focus!” Katara snaps, and Toph falls silent. Katara’s eyes sting and she prods deeper, further into the jagged burn that she’s trying not to think about while focusing all her strength on it at once. “Wake up, Sokka. You promised.”
Sokka doesn’t wake up.
Aang is staring at her desperately, his hands cupping Sokka’s face, sitting crisscrossed under his head. Katara realizes how young he looks. Like a scared twelve year old who doesn’t want to lose a member of the only family he has left.
When she looks at Toph, gray eyes wide and feet dug a few inches into the ground, searching for any sign of life, Katara sees the same thing. A scared child.
If she was brave enough to look at her reflection in the water under her hands, she thinks she’d see it in her own face too.
“Don’t make me lose you,” Katara whispers, and her voice breaks. The water falls from her control, and her brother doesn’t move.
Katara blinks and she’s home, and her mother is on the ground, and her mother is dead. She never told Sokka what she looked like that day, no matter how many times he asked.
She blinks again and she’s sitting in a puddle across the world from her home, and her brother is on the ground.
And her brother is dead.
***
Toph doesn’t remember how long they flew for. It’s hard to keep track of anything up in the sky even on a good day, and today wasn’t a good day.
Today was the farthest from a good day she’s ever had.
When they land, everyone disappears. Toph can still see them, still sense them. Aang is on a big rocky overhang with his back to the horizon, Katara is in a nearby cave with… with-
Toph props her feet up on a rock so she can’t see anymore.
“Hey, not that it matters to you-”
Toph inwardly groans. Whenever someone starts a sentence that way it usually ends with ‘you kind of stink’ or ‘your manners are terrible’ or even ‘your parents must be heartbroken’.
“-but I’m proud of you,” Sokka finishes.
Under her, the soft dirt turns to rock. “What?”
Sokka shrugs. “You grew up being told you couldn’t do anything, and look at you! You’re the best earth bender I’ve ever met, and probably will ever meet, and you did it all on your own. That’s pretty cool.”
“You’re a sap,” Toph says with a scoff, leaning over to punch Sokka in the arm. She smiles when he falls over.
They’re quiet for a while, and Sokka doesn’t sit up again. “I’m proud of you, Toph.”
Toph lays down next to him, and pretends she can see the sky. “Whatever. Thanks.”
A wave of hot air blows through her clothes and Toph doesn’t need to have her feet on the ground to know it’s Aang. She shakes her head. “We could all use some cheering up right now.”
Next to her, Momo chirps. Toph nods. “I know. Hard to do without him.”
Her eyes sting and she growls, clenching her teeth and daring the tears to fall.
They do.
Toph looks up and pretends she can see the sky.
“I’m proud of you too, Captain Boomerang.”
***
Aang runs.
There are still Fire Nation soldiers lining up to fight them, there are still burning buildings that need to be put out. There are still people watching, waiting for the Avatar to help them.
He drags his family to Appa and he runs.
The thing he’s running from -the person he’s running from- comes with them.
Aang doesn’t look back. At the town, or at Sokka.
When they land, he sits on Appa and stares at the fading sun until no one is around, and then he runs some more.
He’s hit with a wave of deja vu when he ends up on a cliff, his eyes scan the horizon like he’s waiting for something. Something that will never come again.
Air whips around him and he turns, falling to his knees with the sun at his back. He closes his eyes.
“Why don’t you ever stop to have fun with us?”
Sokka looks up from his maps, raising his eyebrow at Aang. The wind is wilder up on the cliff edge, and his hair threatens to fall from its ponytail. “What do you mean?”
Aang shrugs, counting off on his fingers. “Whenever we stop to go swimming or climbing or riding you always sit out, unless money or food or information is involved.”
“That’s ridiculous.” Sokka gestures to himself and winks at Aang, “I’m the fun guy!”
“Well… you give us fun ideas.”
“Exactly!”
“But you never do them with us.”
Sokka smiles at him softly and sets down the map. “Aang, what’s your job?”
“To restore peace to the four nations, defeat the Fire Lord, and master all four elements,” Aang says automatically, then adds, “But probably not in that order.”
“Yep!” Sokka nods over his shoulder, “What are Katara and Toph’s jobs?”
“To teach me water and earth bending?” Sokka grins at him like he won a prize, and Aang goes red. “So what’s your point?”
Sokka stands up and bonks the top of Aang’s head with a rolled up map. “Those are pretty high stress jobs for two twelve year olds and a fourteen year old.”
“I guess so?”
“So what’s my job?”
It takes Aang a second, but when he gets it he smacks his fist into his palm and nods. “To make sure we have fun!”
“To make sure you know you’re still kids.” Sokka shrugs, “And also plan all our attacks and travel. Plus keep you guys alive so you can actually do your jobs.”
“That’s a lot for a sixteen year old. You know you’re a kid too, right?”
That seems to surprise Sokka, and he frowns. “Well yeah, I guess. But sixteen is basically an adult.”
Aang stares at him, and then pulls a mock mature face. He jumps over Sokka’s head and sits down in the middle of his pile of maps, dangerously close to the cliff edge. “Come on! Let’s finish this together!”
“I thought I just explained to you why you don’t help with this stuff.”
“Hey, if you’re going to make sure we get to be kids, I’m going to make sure you get to be a kid-that’s-basically-an-adult.”
Sokka pinches his nose, and then sighs. “Okay, fine. If that’s what makes you happy.”
“It does, very much. Now! Teach me how to plan, and I’ll teach you how to surf a bear fish!”
“That sounds insanely dangerous.”
“We fought a whole fleet of soldiers six hours ago,” Aang deadpans.
“Okay, good point. But please don’t sit so close to the edge.”
A whole fleet then, and they couldn’t manage eight guards today.
Aang is never going to forget the look on Sokka’s face when he pushed him out of the way of that blast.
“You’re a kid too,” Aang grits out.
No one answers, and his stomach churns and bile burns his throat.
He slams his hands into the ground and screams, and a wave of fire engulfs the sound.
Aang stumbles back, staring at the burnt patch of ground in front of him. The dead grass he killed with his anger. The brother they killed with theirs.
“Why?” Aang whispers.
No one answers, and his stomach churns and the remnants of his fire burns his throat.
***
“Hello, my love.”
“Mom?”
The voice giggles, eerily familiar and warm. “No, silly. It’s me.”
“Yue?”
“You sound surprised, did you think I’d left you alone?”
The inky white around him ripples, Sokka had just meant to shrug. “You’ve been looking out for me?”
“How could I not?”
Sokka wants to hold her, wants to brush his thumb across her cheek and kiss her. He doesn’t even try. “I have to go back, Yue.”
“Why?”
“Are you really asking that?”
She giggles again, and Sokka thinks she sounds more confident than she ever did when he knew her. “Wouldn’t you like to see the people waiting for you? Wouldn’t you like to stay with me? Wouldn’t you like to see your mother?”
Ahead of him is a little house made of ice, and Sokka knows it’s his. “She’s in there?’
“We all are.”
“Mom?” Sokka whispers. He moves forward, then freezes.
“You promised.”
“Yue? Was that you?” Sokka spins in a circle, and the house stays in front of him the whole time. “Yue?”
“You promised.”
Sokka’s fingers move, and he jumps at the sudden control. “Katara.”
His surroundings ripple again, and he thinks he sees a flash of blue. He tries to take a step towards his house, but his feet aren’t there. Despite that, the igloo seems to move closer.
Katara.
That’s the face he pictures when he tries to imagine what he’ll see in that igloo. If he goes, he could finally see his mother's real face again.
“The burden I put on her was never fair,” he says to the igloo’s dark doorway. “Maybe… I could take it away.”
“Neither was the burden you put on yourself.”
Sokka wishes he could close his eyes. “Mom?”
“You could leave yours behind too.”
For a moment, Sokka considers it. Would it be so bad? Maybe if he was his sister, or Toph, or the Avatar, sure. But he’s just… Sokka.
His surroundings shake and he stumbles onto his feet, knocking pressure through his ankles. “I’m proud of you too, Captain Boomerang.”
If Sokka wanted, he could reach out and touch the igloo.
When they first met, Toph barely said anything to him. She dismissed him, didn’t give him the time of day. It pissed Katara off, it frustrated Aang, it didn’t bother Sokka. He’d been ignored his whole life. Not on purpose, but gran gran, most of the villagers, even his mom always gravitated towards Katara.
One more person was nothing.
Then one day she asked him if he thought he was weak because he didn’t have bending, and Sokka said no, and she huffed and punched his arm, and never ignored him again.
It feels like a lifetime since he’s seen her or the others.
One step. He has his feet now. All it would take is one step, and he’d be with his mom again.
“This is what I want,” Sokka tries to convince himself.
“Why?”
Aang's voice sends him to his knees, pain rips through his chest and he screams through his teeth, clutching the front of his shirt.
Tears prick at his eyes and he looks up, into the igloo, his home. One foot more and he’s inside, and the pain will go away.
If he does go, will he still be haunted by the look in Aang’s eyes when he realized Sokka sacrificed himself for him?
Doesn’t the kid have enough weight on his shoulders?
Don’t they all?
This time, when Sokka wishes he could close his eyes, he does. “Yue? I can’t send me back, princess. Please.”
“My brave warrior, all you had to do was ask.”
When Sokka opens his eyes again, the igloo is gone, and the moon is all he can see.
***
They’re on the beach, and the sun went down an hour ago, and the remaining members of Team Avatar haven’t said a thing to each other since the battle. Sokka lays on the sand, and he looks so peaceful Aang can almost pretend he’s asleep.
He never thought he’d miss Sokka’s snoring.
“Are you sure about this?” Toph asks, breaking the silence, hands clenched at her sides.
Aang watches Katara set Sokka’s helmet on his head gently, her shoulders stiff. “We have to move on in the morning, you know that.”
Toph sniffs. “Yeah, I know.”
“Hey Toph?” Aang whispers, his voice still hoarse from fire bending on the cliff. “Can I hold your hand?”
Wind whipping through her hair, Toph looks like she’s going to say no, and then she reaches out and grabs Aang’s hand in both of hers, and presses her body against his side. “Sure, Twinkletoes.”
Katara stands and lifts her arms. Her stance is off, one of her feet too far behind her, her posture twisted and sagged.
“Do you want help?” Aang asks.
“It’s water tribe tradition for families to send off their loved ones.” Aang slumps, and then Katara’s voice switches into some resemblance of familiarity. “I’d love some help.”
Only using one hand so he doesn’t have to pull his other from Toph’s iron grip, Aang exhales slowly, and the two water benders convince the tides to lead Sokka out to sea.
It hits Aang that this is the last time he’s ever going to see his friend.
Something roars inside him. Roku, Kyoshi, any Avatar who’d ever lost a friend, who ever let their family die. It burns like fire and crashes through him like a landslide, swaying him like the wind and drowns him like the ocean that will be his friend’s grave.
Katara takes his hand, and the glowing he hadn’t even noticed fades from his tattoos.
“Don’t let anger be your last memory of him,” Katara pleads, her voice cracks twice.
Toph’s grip on his hand tightens. “This is it?”
Eyes fixed on Sokka’s limp form, bobbing up and down slowly, Aang takes a breath. “This is it.”
Everything goes white.
Is this grief? Aang wonders as the sand makes contact with his knees.
When he found out his people had all died, he was so caught up in so many other things that he only had time to feel the loss for a moment, and it sent him into the Avatar state. Now, with a full day to let the truth sink in before he has to let Sokka go, he can’t help but think that is what losing someone is really like.
“What’s going on?” Toph asks, and her voice is scared.
“There’s a light. Aang, what-”
Before she can finish, before Aang can process that he’s not the only one seeing this, a wave of calm washes over him, like the first time he tried water bending.
“Do not worry, just as you look out for the world, I have been looking out for you.”
“I know that voice,” Katara whispers, he still can’t see her. “Princess Yue.”
“Who?”
Just as soon as it came, the white is gone. Aang squints as his eyes adjust and focus on one thing.
The moon. More brilliant than he’s ever seen.
“Sokka!” Katara shouts, and she’s running, pulling her hand from Aang’s. She stumbles through the shallow water, sloshing forward instead of using her bending.
Aang tugs on Toph, “Come on. Let’s go see what she’s doing.”
He winces at his choice of words, but Toph doesn’t snark back like she usually does. Now is not the time.
Katara splashes around frantically, shoving water back and forth and soaking herself head to toe. “Where is he? The tide isn’t that strong, he should still be here!”
Toph closes her eyes, and after a few seconds, she shakes her head. “He’s not on the ground, as far as I can tell, at least.”
“Where is he?”
Aang feels dizzy. He puts a hand to his head, stumbling back. Toph holds him steady. “Twinkletoes?”
“Something’s happening.”
Katara stops looking for her brother, stepping back so she’s closer to Toph and Aang.
Aang isn’t sure what’s going on, he’s not even sure it’s bad.
His breath evens out.
The ocean explodes.
A boy bursts through the surface, silhouetted by the moon's light. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, or maybe it really is Sokka.
Katara takes a step forward, the water lapping against her hips. “Sokka?”
The boy’s hair is pure white, and even though he was just submerged in water, it doesn’t look wet at all.
“I think it’s a spirit,” Aang says.
“Who is?”
“Aang, it looks like Sokka.”
“Who does?”
“I know, but-”
“Can someone please explain to the blind girl what’s going on?” Toph shouts.
Katara shakes her head, “I’m going to get him. Even if it is a spirit, he looks unconscious.”
“Who does?”
Aang pulls Toph’s hands from his own, guiding her so she can latch on to Katara. “Let me go. Bridge to the spirits, remember?”
He needs to do something before he breaks.
Toph growls. “You guys suck. Sokka always tells me what’s happening.”
“Well he’s not here, is he?” Katara snaps, and then her eyes widen. “Toph, I’m sorry. I’ll- go, Aang. I’ll fill Toph in.”
Aang nods, reaches out to squeeze Katara’s hand, and dives into the ocean.
It doesn’t take him long to get to the boy, who’s still floating upright in the water despite being knocked out. When he finally gets a good look at the boy's face, Aang’s control of the water around him slips, dunking him underwater suddenly. He resurfaces, coughing and gasping.
It really is Sokka.

i just watched the first six episodes of the mp100 netflix show for no good reason other than that i apparently hate myself, so to not put my pain to waste here’s a half-review half-rant thing
i guess ill start with the good and make my way to the shit i hated about this show, but as you can probably guess there’s hardly any good
tome was fun, i guess. she’s got that same chaotic™ energy and had some of the only lines i genuinely laughed at, but also she’s the only member of the telepathy club for some reason? and they merged her character with mezato’s, so i guess she’s got more to do. but judging by the sfx i doubt they had the budget for even one (1) more actor, so ig i can forgive them for that. overall probably the only adaptation that both wasn’t painful to watch and actually warranted the changes they made
teru (from the little i saw of him) was also pretty good. the fight had some....changes, but on his own i thought he was fine, pretty harmless adaptation overall. i stopped watching once i realised that they weren’t gonna go all in and give him the cactus hair so points deducted for that
and the last thing i liked about this show: ritsu! they got a young actor who was good and i didn’t have many issues with him. there was one interaction he had with tome that i liked when she introduced herself and he said ‘oh! tome’s my grandma’s name!’ and tome was like ‘...yeah you and mob are definitely brothers.’ the reason why he’s lower than tome and teru is because. for whatever fucking reason. he is in every. goddamn. scene. like even when it doesn’t make any sense. when mob joins the body improvement club? he’s there. when mob is taking down the lol cult? he’s there. the teru fight? he’s there. i lost count of how many times i was asking myself ‘why the fuck is ritsu here?’ he was inescapable. his presence in those scenes didn’t even add anything to the story. also he’s friends with tsubomi for some reason....i guess to give him more things that mob can be envious of?
speaking of tsubomi.....god. not to be like ‘they didn’t understand the source material!!1!!11!1!!!’ but like. please. it hurt. i get that they were probably trying to lean into the ‘guy gets the girl/high school romance’ type show more but uhh....way to horribly misunderstand the source material, guys. the problem with her is that she is in it so much that it almost entirely defeats the point of her character & what she’s supposed to mean to mob. they interact like every other scene! she’s a pretty close friend to ritsu, so that means they interact even more! she’s their next door neighbour ffs! i only watched the first six episodes and i think i still saw more of her than her entire screen time in the anime put together
and apart from her being so close to mob that it completely destroys the point of him idolising her, it also meant that the writers had to come up with a full personality for her and an actual dynamic for her and mob. and hoo boy they really went and decided that the two of them would have the most awkward, unappealing dynamic ever, huh. like there’s this running gag where she always messes up the words to common phrases, and mob has to correct her, and it’s painful every time. which, i guess (????) makes sense for what their relationship is in the manga & anime, where they’re not close anymore and mob doesn’t even know what she’s like/what he likes about her, but in this show, they were trying to push them together to lean into the romance tropes, so their uncomfortable dynamic doesn’t make sense anyway??
the stageplay got it fuckin RIGHT when they went and cast NO ONE for tsubomi. like. the legend jumped out. they got mob pining for a silhouette. chef’s kiss
holy shit this got long fast. ok the rest is under the cut
i guess im just going character by character now so: dimple. weird guy. the cgi was awful, but you knew that already. but he was just....so weird. and by that i mean he was awkwardly,, never there? when teru exorcises him it’s supposed have at least some impact, but in this show he had like three (3) scenes before it (rather than a couple episodes leading up to it) (and also they cut a shit ton out of the middle of the lol cult arc for...whatever reason) so when he gets exorcised here it’s like...oh no.....that guy...........did mob even speak to him more than once.....
speaking of the pacing of this show: it’s horrendous!! good lord i hate it!! the pacing is shit awful, and it feels like they’re just throwing in ‘’’’’’’’interesting’’’’’’’’ scenes that should take place later in the story bc they know that the audience isn’t going to want to stay around for the atrocious writing! case in point: we see the flashback of mob and reigen meeting in the second episode. the second fucking episode. the reason why it’s delayed so much in the anime (and even more in the manga) has a lot to do with the unfolding of reigen’s character depth and they just?? throw it in so early?? it feels like they’re just going ‘oh by the way, he’s good, or whatever. yeah, he’s totally complex and interesting. just trust us, okay, keep watching the show’ and the pacing of that completely throws off reigen’s character arc
i can’t really remember which episode(s) this was in but they also have this weird subplot with reigen going to the bar alone (yknow..like....s2 scenes...) and lowkey being friends with the bartender guy?? i gotta be honest i wasn’t paying much attention during these scenes but suffice it to say: god i hated reigen. like sure, he’s a sleazy character, but they just made him disgusting. netflix reigen does not drink his respect women juice, and that’s all i wanna say about that
also why is he like 40 years old
anyways back to the pacing, apart from throwing in scenes from wayyy later in the plot, this show also tried to have like four or five plot threads going at once. the place that this hurt the most was probably the teru fight, where the anime spends like two episodes entirely on it and nothing else, but in this show it keeps cutting to the start of the big clean up arc (probably just so they could keep showing ritsu) and reigen’s weird subplot
and there’s other stuff like that, where they kept cutting to the awakening lab & the scars doing psychic stuff or whatever, i guess trying to entice the audience like ‘we swear there’s plot stuff!! it’s not just slice of life!! there’s evil™ people!!’ and i guess they were gonna pull the ol’ switcheroo™ where the audience thinks the awakening lab and the scars are working together but oh no!! only the scars are evil!! the awakening lab was actually on our side!! but i can’t be bothered to watch that far
also in the teru fight, they got most of the message across (don’t use your psychic powers against other people....mob and teru are the same...) but because they kept cutting away from it they lost the dramatic impact of all of it. the choreography and sfx weren’t as bad as they could have been i guess, but they definitely showed the budget. it also didn’t take place in a school (which...fine, whatever) but it led to something i actually did like: teru attacked mob with glass shards instead of knives, and although i do like the knife metaphor + imagery, you could also argue something about the destructive nature of his power use coming back to hurt him in the shards of glass, and also something about reflections or...something. i just thought it was neat, although i don’t know why they changed the setting from the school in the first place
also in the teru fight: it was raining and ???% stopped the rain katara-style mid air, and even though the cgi still wasn’t all that good, i thought that was a rad concept. but then he just made a tornado instead of ripping buildings apart and you get the idea not a lot of it was good
back to things i hate because i don’t have a good segue!! the writing!! bad!!
i see the writers of this show engaged in the age old storytelling practice of ‘tell, don’t show’
when reigen tells mob to be a good person: “ok, i won’t show off my powers or use them against other people. i’ll become a good person”
when mob loses control of his powers and hurts ritsu as a kid: “these powers are awful and cause nothing but trouble. i’m not going to be using them again”
god i wish i was exaggerating
and, going back to the lol cult, for whatever fucking reason they decided to have that latter line of dialogue to be the full explanation of mob’s complex. like i get that there’s a time for exposition and a time for subtly, but take some cues from the original author and maybe fucking explain the main plot device of the show and not the protagonist’s sad vague backstory rather than the other way around. want to confuse and alienate your audience? good fucking job!! you’ve done it!!
and just because this was my favourite episode in the anime and im fucking bitter!! they cut out so much of dimple’s monologue and just had mob get to 100% pretty much after all dimple says is ‘get a clue.’ like. he puts the mask on, it doesn’t work, ‘get a clue,’ 100%. yeah im totally gonna care when this character comes back to try and manipulate mob later.
also....mob...........
i havent talked about him that much here, have i?
okay specifically w the lol cult first, the whole thing where they put the mask on and he’s not smiling is completely devoid of any impact because!! he’s full on emoting throughout the rest of the show!! like he’ll look worried, embarrassed, he’ll cringe or smile or whatever, and the most it looks like is that he’s just slightly uninterested, but otherwise has a pretty good grip on his emotions. unlike the anime + stageplay where it’s clear that he’s (seemingly) completely unemotional. the reason why i bring up the stageplay is bc, while i know that setsuo ito is 10ish years older than the guy that plays mob in the netflix show, i kinda wish that they just....cast him anyway.....bc they clearly didn’t have any hangups on casting adults for all the other middle schoolers, and ito did such a good job in the stageplay. he’s the only guy who is mob to me lmao (kyle mccarley is on thin ice but he can stay)
i mean mob just straight up showing emotions through the show could have been down to the directing as well. also i’m pretty sure a majority of it is bc he’s constantly around tsubomi, so. stupid decisions lead to stupid outcomes!
and that’s basically it for my weird review/rant on this show. the writing’s bad, the pacing’s bad, they didn’t care at all about the source material, i’m not entirely sure if they cared about the audience either, there was maybe two (2) changes i liked, if that, and everyone should go watch the stageplay. there were probably way more points that i wanted to bring up but i think my brain is already repressing the memory of it for my own safety
if i ever try to watch the rest of this show, shoot me
